  • A tutorial for making an ultralight windshield for a hiking stove. Windshields save fuel and help your pot heat up quicker. This design is based on my hiking stove but can be modified to fit most if not all hiking gas stoves.
    You can buy the same pot here: www.amazon.com...

    Nice design. I think this is the first home made gas stove wind screen I have seen. Thanks for sharing

    It is NOT rust. Aluminium does not rut it us oxidation and is harmless. Just hit with some steel wool.
    I was doing this over 6 yrs ago. MSR was doing it over 40yrs ago. But good job.

    Great idea.I tried this with a Coke can and nearly sliced my fingers off, your version looks a lot easier so I will give it a go. Great demo thanks.

    Thumbnail caption got me! "Windshield" in the U.S. is part of a motor vehicle -- but the Brits call it a windscreen . . . so is our UL hiker so fast she needs something in front of her head to make the trail more comfortable? Oh wait, there's cooking paraphernalia on the table . . .

    I used 3 snap buttons to double up the screen For the 7 inch need so it fits in my short pot. Trivial weight difference.

    How about using a trangia triangle as a windscreen ? Depending on the size of your pot though.

    I'd like to see comments from anyone who made and actually used this design in the field.
    Unless adequate space is maintained between pot and the windshield, the thin aluminum will burn. Over the years, I've tried several variations including this one with little success. In order to maintain sufficient space so your windshield doesn't go up in flames requires a larger windshield with a wider diameter when wrapped around the pot/stove than she is showing in this video. Sorry, but this is one of those ideas that works under controlled conditions but fails in the field.
    A free-standing windscreen can be adjusted to accommodate changes in wind direction and doesn't get hot. The simplest design that I currently use is the same aluminum tray cut into six separate panels that are taped together with duct tape. This folds flat, takes up no room in a pack, and can be supported with tent stakes. It also doesn't get in the way when I need to adjust the pot or the stove. The point is not to focus the heat toward the pot but only to protect it from the wind.

    nice, but any other ideas for more simple windshield?

    • @LikingHiking
      @LikingHiking  4 роки тому

      I have seen now you can buy simple windshields that clip on to your gas cylinder. These wouldn't be as light though. rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com.au%2Fp%2F875415581

    Quick question- you mentioned a link to where you found the pot on amazon, what was it?

    • @LikingHiking

      Sorry must have missed that in editing. The link is: www.amazon.com.au/Dolity-Titanium-Lightweight-Foldable-Tableware/dp/B07KX8R3QL/ref=mp_s_a_1_213?keywords=titanium+mug&qid=1561061728&s=gateway&sr=8-213 however there are many similar or the same pots for similar prices on eBay and Amazon so I recommend hunting around for the best deal.

    Is this a pretty safe option as far as canister overheating goes?

    • @LikingHiking
      @LikingHiking  4 роки тому +3

      The fact the windshield does not trap heat around the canister as it is off the ground makes it a lot safer. But it is home made so can't guarantee safety 🙂.

    • @thomasmusso1147
      @thomasmusso1147 3 роки тому

      Shouldn't be a problem. The canister is open.
