    I really like the heat reflector idea. Thanks

    Good one.
    Some REI fuel stoves have an included single sheet aluminum wind shield that folds up for storage (I have one). Some fuel canisters and burners can't take the excessive reflected heat and the unit melts down if totally windfree and heat intensive. So some airflow and absolute heat control is mandatory.
    For those making the standing issue with the reflector, make 5-6 small 8-12" long stick stakes. Lay out flat reflector. Take 2 sticks. Put first stake on reflector edge, and overlap with reflector edge. Put second stake onto reflector and wind up. Do same with the other edge. Vertically plant these 2 sets of stakes in the forward corners of a "V" or "I_I" shape, upwind, facing the campfire. Using 1-2 other stakes, finish the shape with the inner stake(s). Will hold up to any wind, ... except a clumsy camper tripping across it. Can always pull them out, and restake depending upon the wind direction changing.
    Another YT vd made a wood limb cooking tripod, ... then I mentioned that ... while you have already made the tripod for cooking, then no further use when not cooking ... how about putting a space blanket (48x53) around the tripod, and sit within the mini-tipi as a dual campfire (and personal) windshield and heat reflector system. Same design can be your original stove windshield for the same space blanket you always carry (versus the smaller additional heat reflector).

    Great DIY Joe 👍 I think this falls into the Super UL range.

    Aluminum foil pie tins and cookie sheets can be used and will reduce manufacturing process.

    But how do you keep the windscreen from blowing over in the wind?

      Not sure if anyone gives a damn but I just hacked my gfs Instagram account using InstaPlekt. You can find it by Googling if you care

    Made a windscreen prior...but yours is lighter than the foil cookie sheet I use. Like the heat deflector... will try that. Enjoyed the chill music and editing.

    Very cool Joe. A bit more to it the way you built it, but I think the reinforcement is a good idea. I too bought the BRS and I love it. Are you going for the Trans-Canada Trail? I turned my brother onto your channel.

    Still the best UL DYI wind screen

  • @adventureswithfrodo2721
    @adventureswithfrodo2721 7 років тому

    I believe touch should have your wind screen high enough to shield the pot. look at the cannister stove wind screen I made. but what you do is good. I have been meaning to try a simular idea but WI with oven pan foil.

    Hey Joe, is there a reason why you'd prefer this over the really heavy duty foil cooking pans and such?

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  7 років тому +3

      Yup, it's lighter, more compact, and best of all, easily replaceable on a long trail. Additionally, perhaps more importantly, I've made a few of the heat reflectors out of the heavier aluminum sheeting with very poor results. Unfortunately, the thicker aluminum tends to act as a heat sink and actually carries heat into the canister, making it heat up faster. Not good.

      what about a disk like you made but with the car sunshade material? It's quite light and nicely rigid. Have you tested how close it can get to the flame before the backside plastic melts?

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  7 років тому +2

      I haven't tested this to confirm it, but I am 99% sure that it would melt.

    Awesome! Gotta do this! Had the brs and my Evernew just came in.
    Does water boil faster with this? Thanks for the video!

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  7 років тому +1

      It does! Both in theory and in my practice. But.. I always burn my stove on a really low flame to boost efficiency, so that offsets the added boil speed quite a bit.

      Glad to know it worked for ya!

  • @valentin2869
    @valentin2869 5 років тому

    Just by putting my hands at the spot of the heat reflector, i can feel very little warmth coming from the stove when burning (i'm using a BRS3000t same as yours). Hence I don't find it very much usefull. Risk of explosions by overheating the cannister ? I think the stove's developpers have thought of that. Besides, love your windshield

    If anyone gets the chance I highly recommend using a product called "Cinefoil" instead of aluminum foil. Cinefoil is made to be bent and contorted many times without breaking. Its also impossibly lightweight compared to aluminum. I know that seems like a strange thing to say but it is. It's apparently voodoo magic because Cinefoil seems to break the laws of physics with how light weight it is. Amazon sells a large roll for around $40 but its totally worth it. You'll have lots of extra for additional projects or to share with friends.

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  7 років тому +2

      Not yet, but I'm hoping to do a series of fuel efficiency videos in the future, I'll have to add this to the list of variables to test haha.

  • @justwired
    @justwired 7 років тому

    cool I had this idea even tho they say it shouldn't be done
    but instead of the separate wind screen, integrate the heat reflector and windscreen as one that way the fuel bottle is never enclosed ! what do think ? also punch a few holes in the bottom of the heat reflector

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  7 років тому

      I tried to do this once, but I just couldn't get enough airflow to the thing to make it work. Plus the aluminum gets really hot right next to the flame and actually carries heat down into the canister. I think it could be done, but I'm not sure how yet.

    Hi Joe. Totally ignorant regarding the explosion hazard when using a wind screen with this set up. I also have a BRS, Micro Rocket and Soto. During some tests with two cups of water in a Toaks 750 ml pot, the Rocket and Soto were about even, both blowing away the BRS in cook time and fuel efficiency. But at .9 ounces, I want the BRS to work!! I know you said you plan to do an efficiency test, but just from your seat of the pants observations, do you think the wind screen set up you show here bring the BRS closer to the other heavier stoves? Plus, I would prefer not to blow myself up. Thanks.

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  7 років тому

      It will certainly help! The downside to the BRS is that wind can absolutely decimate it's efficiency, so you pretty much have to use a windscreen with it, which means that this setup could potentially boost it's efficiency greatly. I've never heard of anyone's canister stove actually exploding... so be aware of the issue, and avoid overheating a canister, but I wouldn't be too concerned about explosions.

    I've seen a few videos on the brs 3000t and it takes 6 minutes to boil water with no wind . Sounds like it waste fuel to me but you would know best. Love all your videos. Watch all of them been following you for quite sometime . Really enjoy watching your adventures. Thanks for all you do and share.

    do the same project but use a alum cookie sheet. Much more durable.

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  7 років тому

      I've experimented with those, the issue is that they are quite heavy and tend to hold onto way too much heat. This one is actually surprisingly durable. Mine have lasted for about 1000 miles on average.
