Shawshank is always gonna be a classic, he’s also done numerous voice over work way before SpongeBob…but I have to say, Clancy Brown absolutely owned his role as the dead/abusive stepdad cop in Pet Semetary 2
Haha.....my son and daughter in law both played sports and graduated from Urbana.....I felt compelled to respond because Urbana is rarely ever brought up! Urbana is no more....
I thought his best scene in Shawshank was when he was going to throw Andy off the roof. This guy has been around for a long time. IMDB has him listed with 301 acting credits. That is a ton of work by anyone's standard. He played a lot of bad guy roles early in his career (probably because he was so good at them) but as he got older, started playing more sympathetic characters. He is an excellent actor and I've really enjoyed his work over the years. Appreciate the interview, thanks.
Number one most common question, people that were in something that became huge and iconic, was; "Did you know??" They keep asking that over and over, and no one knows. They would just hope something is accepted and liked. But it gets to the point, like I am watching the same interviewers over and over.
rumor had it that Clancy was sobbing like a little girl when they took him away at the end of Shawshank, but I find it hard to believe, he seems pretty calm, collected.
What an amazing contrast between Clancy's role in Shawshank and his role in 'The Hurricane'. In both films he plays a prison officer but in Hurricane he's kind and compassionate.
Shawshank is absolutely the best movie ever made! And as you watch it, you're like how they will end this and then the beach scene comes and so do the tears. As many times as I've seen that scene it hits me so hard my eyes water up, every time. It's truly a masterpiece Clancy Brown's role is definitely a major reason for that.
The first role Clancy Brown played that really caught my attention was 'The Swede' in Bad Boys (1983). I hated that character so much! Funny thing, the actors who play the worst villains are often the best people in real life. I'm glad it's true in Mr. Brown's case.
Yes, that's the one I always remember best too. And I heard that as well, the best bad guys are played by really nice guys. Much like, the best comedians are often the most unhappy people in real life.
Why is always nice to see the few actors you hate his character's action in a movie..is truly a great genuine articulate participant in an interview. Glad to see he is getting more recognition for his work. I'm sure his filmography is vast...but I still recall Highlander with great nostalgia...Thanks!
I'm a HUGE fan of Clancy. From Lex Luthor to Shawshank, his presence is always intimidating. I hope Marvel/MCU will select a character for this fantastic actor.
i’m from Georgia 🇬🇪 Caucasia and it’s Number 1 movie of all times for 99% .. if u get questioned about the very first best movies off all time, what first comes to mind Shawshank Redemption and this man is so underrated his role and acting was one of the most psychological evil characters ever been seen .. man, you are amazing in that movie stop that talking
I was one of the few people I guess who actually saw this when it was in the theater. I remember walking out and thinking what an incredible film it was and could not believe it didn't do well at the box office but in fact I thought I must have been a little out of my mind until it was nominated for Best Picture
The fact that Shawshank never won a single Oscar - Golden Globe - SAG award is a crime. the 2016 movie "Suicide Squad" Won an Oscar for best makeup. That trash movie has an Oscar and Shawshank does not SMDH
Some prison movies don't do well at the box office. The Tom Hanks movie, "Philadelphia", the story of a gay man dying of HIV won the Oscar that year. It was more "politically correct" win.
Clancy Brown also provided the voices of Neo Cortex from the 'Crash Bandicoot' games, Lex Luther from 'Superman: The Animated Series' & Rayden from 'Mortal Kombat: The Defenders Of The Realm'. He also starred in a Lifetime movie that my Ma likes called 'Love, Lies & Murder'.
Clancy Brown is so freaking underrated as an actor it's unbelievable. I think his greatest role was in Highlander. That character is legendary and will never die. No pun intended! I absolutely don't believe the Kurgan character would have been close to as awesome if somebody else had played it.
And in a way, makes this video almost disarming. He was so convincing in playing an evil, heartless character in Shawshank that you just expect him to be like that to some extent in real life. Great actor for sure.
He has so many great roles, but I'll always remember him as Viking in Bad Boys. Sean Penn tuned him up with a few cans of soda in a pillowcase. Great scene from a great movie!🙂👍
Between this, "Highlander", "Badboys", I always knew he was a hell of an actor, because the best actors can take a character they hate, and make the audience hate him even more.
Yeah, my first thought is always to Highlander and then Badboys. The beat down by Sean Penn with the soda cans is etched into my head! That and the scene .. "My Name is Candy" " ... of course you are."

The reveal of Andy having tunneled out of Shawshank Prison gives me chills every time. Easily my favorite movie of all time.
And then you wonder how the hell anyone accomplished such a feat with a tiny rock hammer.
And to think Tom Cruise was supposed to play Andy lol
@@JasonMaly Yeah, I can't see it. But I would never underestimate Cruise. I've seen him do fantastic work in things like Interview with the Vampire and Vanilla Sky. He's a capable actor when he's not being an action star.
@@ericbattle4597 ... and how he pinned the poster covering the tunnel entrance to the wall from inside the tunnel. Not to mention no guard ever accidentally punching a hole in any of the posters and discovering the tunnel during the countless cell inspections thoughout the years.
@@einundsiebenziger5488 And the sewage pipe being that wide for him to crawl through. Not to mention, how easily he broke through the steel and the thunderstorm covering the sounds for him. Also, the fact that he was never moved out of his cell for 20 years? So many unrealistic things, but still a GREAT escape scene and film!
Great actor! He tends to play villain/antagonist roles but he seems to be so sweet in real life.
"Highlander" was such an epic, and he was the perfect villain.THAT is my favorite film for Mr. Brown... :)
Me too - that was my favorite role for Brown - the Kurgan in Highlander. Iconic! He hinted that he was paid NOTHING for that role and he really made that film!
loved the scene in Shawshank where Clancy is about to throw Tim off the roof of the prison.
He just was such a believable phycopath
What are you jimmys staring at?? Back to work!
“Drink up while it’s cold, ladies.”
... psychopath*
Shawshank is always gonna be a classic, he’s also done numerous voice over work way before SpongeBob…but I have to say, Clancy Brown absolutely owned his role as the dead/abusive stepdad cop in Pet Semetary 2
Loved him as Gus
Scared the sht out of me as a kid. That menacing grin.
The surprise finding out later that he played Mr Krabs
“Drew, buddy…”
His VA work as Hades in GOW III is fantastic.
I was thinking that too!
This guy was a guest speaker at my College graduation ceremony in Urbana Ohio in 2010. Shawshank is an all time favorite of mine.
that's awesome (for real). I'd rather see him or a similar type of actor speak than the usual boring UN/US political system stooge.
Haha.....my son and daughter in law both played sports and graduated from Urbana.....I felt compelled to respond because Urbana is rarely ever brought up! Urbana is no more....
Just don’t ask “what time do we eat” ?
"What time do we throw our hats for graduation?"
He owned that role. A very underrated actor.
Clancy Brown played a great role in Shawshank. He, Morgan and Tim made that movie click. Great actor/ artist.
SHAWSHANK was a fantastic movie. I must has watched it a dozen times. Every minute of it is riveting.
One of my all time favorite actors ! I'm so surprised he doesn't get more work.
Imagine a world where no one cares what you look like?
Well that world sure isn’t in hoolywood
More? Check out his filmography
@@rhocat362 I'll do that,, thank you !!
No doubt his best scene!
He was great in Detroit Become Human too. One of my favorite voice actors. He has such a distinct personality and voice.
Number one most common question, people that were in something that became huge and iconic, was; "Did you know??" They keep asking that over and over, and no one knows.
They would just hope something is accepted and liked.
But it gets to the point, like I am watching the same interviewers over and over.
It’s weird how Clancy Brown is known for playing the one of baddest guys in film history when he’s known to be one of the nicest celebrity ever
rumor had it that Clancy was sobbing like a little girl when they took him away at the end of Shawshank, but I find it hard to believe, he seems pretty calm, collected.
Yeah, his character 'Byron Hadley'.
Respect to the those who directed the movie for not SHOWING his character crying.
What an amazing contrast between Clancy's role in Shawshank and his role in 'The Hurricane'. In both films he plays a prison officer but in Hurricane he's kind and compassionate.
God I love Clancy Brown! His voice, his talent,... total man crush!
He also plays lex Luther on many animated batman films.
Shawshank is one of the greatest movies ever made.
I feel old when the Highlander is trumped by sponge bob. The man has presence.
I'm a big fan of both but spongebob (at least while under Hillenburg) is special
I can't wait to hear Mr Krabs to say to a foe "There can be only one..."
An underrated actor for sure.
Clancy Brown is just a class act all around, while playing some if the most delightfully reviled villains in movie history.
*of
@@annehajdu8654 Lol! Yes, thank you for correcting my typo.
He did an awesome job as the voice for Surtur in Ragnarok.
Clancy Brown was unbelievable in Shawshank Redemption. He gave a great performance.
The first role Clancy Brown played that really caught my attention was 'The Swede' in Bad Boys (1983). I hated that character so much! Funny thing, the actors who play the worst villains are often the best people in real life. I'm glad it's true in Mr. Brown's case.
His name was Viking .He had that radio blow up n his face
Yes, that's the one I always remember best too. And I heard that as well, the best bad guys are played by really nice guys. Much like, the best comedians are often the most unhappy people in real life.
Right? and the actors that play the good guys/ most loved characters are often jerks. Not all of them though.
@@eviljoker303 Yeah, you're right.
You mean, Viking
Shawshank Redemption is one of my all time favorite films and I can never get tired of watching it !
Why is always nice to see the few actors you hate his character's action in a movie..is truly a great genuine articulate participant in an interview. Glad to see he is getting more recognition for his work. I'm sure his filmography is vast...but I still recall Highlander with great nostalgia...Thanks!
What a genuinely nice person.
I'm a HUGE fan of Clancy. From Lex Luthor to Shawshank, his presence is always intimidating. I hope Marvel/MCU will select a character for this fantastic actor.
He's actually Surtur
Don’t forget the original “Highlander” movie!
@@shawngillespie3532 absolutely! Just saw that for the first time recently
The first movie I saw him in was bad boys not with Will Smith but Sean Penn and was kind of a prison movie too
Wasn’t Clancy Brown also ‘ Viking ‘ in Bad Boys with Sean Penn? Great movie when he and Sean Penn were young.
Great actor - fills a role and is larger than life when he does. From Highlander to Shawshank - amazing. Love sponge bob too
He was also great in the short-lived HBO show Carnivale as the villain opposite Nick Stahl.
Love watching Clancy Brown scenes from many movies. Great actor.
I simply love this guys acting. I loved him in the original Bad Boys with Sean Penn. 💯
Clancy is a brilliant actor! I like every role he plays and in "Billions" he is superb together with another favorite of mine, Paul Giamatti.
i’m from Georgia 🇬🇪 Caucasia and it’s Number 1 movie of all times for 99% .. if u get questioned about the very first best movies off all time, what first comes to mind Shawshank Redemption and this man is so underrated his role and acting was one of the most psychological evil characters ever been seen .. man, you are amazing in that movie stop that talking
Umm, am I the only person who just learned he voiced Mr.Krabs?
Luthor, krabs, Shawshank and now in INVINCIBLE - man is transcending the childhood of generations 🎉
Clancy Brown has not be recognized enough. He is such a fantastic actor
Is that because everyone else watched the two other classics the same weekend? Lol
Some prison movies don't do well at the box office. The Tom Hanks movie, "Philadelphia", the story of a gay man dying of HIV won the Oscar that year. It was more "politically correct" win.
A Stephen King novella.
Bad Boys is a gem of a picture from back in 1983. Sean Penn is in it and Clancy Brown as Viking.
Wow. Learn something every day. Did not realize that was Clancy in Bad Boys, can picture it now!
Clancy Brown is an amazing actor. I first saw him when the first Highlander came out. He delivers such great performances.
Clancy Brown is so good at playing the bad guy. It was nice to see him play a good guy. In Starship Troopers.
Great Actor!.....and he seems like a genuinely nice guy.
Really? That was him? Decades ago since I’ve seen that one. Thanks for posting this.
Honestly a much better prison movie than Shawshank.
It was a Great Movie, the cast was a dream team.
Good interview
He's been in so many great films and shows its hard to pick one but I love Bad Boys.
Aside from SR, I'd say Highlander. "MMMMOMMMMMMMMMMM!"
Between this, "Highlander", "Badboys", I always knew he was a hell of an actor, because the best actors can take a character they hate, and make the audience hate him even more.
Badboys was the real Badboys. True 80s.
Yeah, my first thought is always to Highlander and then Badboys. The beat down by Sean Penn with the soda cans is etched into my head! That and the scene ..
"My Name is Candy"
" ... of course you are."
How about his breakout role as Viking in Bad Boys starring Sean Penn
That’s what always comes to my mind when I see him
He was real prick in the movie,; which shows how good he got into the character. In real life, he seems like a real nice fellow.
Clancy is a very underrated actor. He’s been in so many things and I don’t think he gets the recognition that he deserves!
The roof scene, where Tim's about to learn how to fly. "I think a man working outdoors feels more like a man with a bottle of suds." Great movie.
I was born in 81, I remember him most as the big bad in the first Highlander movie.... lmao, he was so badass.... Bobby pins and all holding his neck together
Shawshank is a "Real Man's" movie, and if you're a guy who hasn't seen it yet it's time to step your game up.
I *loved* Carnevale!! If any show out there deserves a reboot, it is that! Clancy is superb in everything he does!
Shawshank for sure but when I think of the movies and roles he was in I think of Highlander. He was excellent in that one.
