Really beautiful car. I remember the Contour / Mystique not selling well. They were expensive compared to the Tempo / Topaz they replaced. Also, I always thought the Contour looked like an old man sucking his teeth. The refresh looked better.
There was NO back seat legroom in those cars...potential buyers who needed the back seat found it in the Chrysler "cloud" cars ( Cirrus and Status)...which had their own issues (but hey...more back seat leg room)!
Oh wow the Mystique is the same price as my fully loaded Hyundai Sonata Limited in today’s dollars. Mine went for $29K with the rebate, and MSRP was $37K.
One of my former coworkers bought one of these and called it a "Mercury Mistake" because it was a giant headache, all it did was act up and break down. Giant money pit.
@@P00katube There was a simple repair for it in a TSB that most mechanics never bothered to find. It involved replacing a simple redesigned tube in the intake system.
My mother had one it was such a great looking sedan we had to get rid of it when I was born so we got a Nissan Pathfinder which I still love as well but I remember the Mystique was quick and luxurious leather a nice lightb blue color and spoiler on the back.
They were clapped out pieces of shit. The fit and finish was mediocre at best, those 2.0 motors don't have the greatest track record for reliability, and thanks to Ford using cheap and thin steel for structure components to save on manufacturing costs, rust put these cars in the scrap yard not long after the warranties expired. Generally speaking, most of these cars aren't on the road today because of rust.

Had to ride in a pre refresh Contour several times -- the interior was crazy small. Seemed on par with the contemporary Escort.
0:01 John Davis doing his best impersonation of Doug DeMuro🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
My friends mom had a V6 Mystique. It went about 114 and hit the limiter easily.

Not to mention that there were better sedans with more rear seat legroom, better reliability and better fit and finish.
