    Crossmen have always been DCI's secret sauce for Jazz. Most people would say BD plays more jazz, but looking back over the years, Crossmen have had many more shows based on popular contemporary jazz artists. Birdland , first circle, Third Wind, even Michael Jackson's music had been played by this corps. I think they are the best at bringing these jazz composer's music to life on the field.

      I think that's the difference, this music is their speciality compared to a corps who might have one of those songs sprinkled in briefly in an otherwise jazz-free show.

    I really loved playing that show. I definitely don't miss circle drill....ever! I thought the uniforms that year were a little bit colorless. I wish they would bring back the early 90's Unis!!!

      @Zeeeeeee777  Рік тому

      I dig the uniforms, the ones that always came across bland to me were the black and gray ones from 2001. But I think that's because you had so much color from the guard and the marching drums in 98.

    Loved it when Crossmen's biggest issues were picking out colors. Nothing to take away from the members at the present, they're obviously talented. Hoping this year everything gels.

    Thom Hannum (and Colin McNutt) arranged the 1998 Crossmen percussion book, with Jim Ancona arranging the pit parts. Mark Thurston arranged the 1991 Crossmen Pat Metheny show.

    The book for both 97-98 was great and they had some really super talent on that battery line regardless what people say.

    I love this Show AND 1991 Bones. However, I like the 1991 arrangement of 3rd wind better. I feel like it has a little more emotion behind it. But I still absolutely love this version!

    @YEP321S While I am not a Crossmen alum, I do know that the corps leadership has taken and continues to take great pride in NOT forgetting the history of this great corps. They may be from TX now, but they have not forgotten where they came from. The staff makes damn sure that every kid there knows what Bones were and still IS! You my friend are downright disrespectful.

    I'm not an ex-member, though I have several good friends former college classmates, and KKY brothers who marched with them, and I marched with a few of them in my corps, too.
    Whether you want to admit it or not- results matter. Otherwise, why did the entire management go this year? They clearly weren't getting it done trying to repeat the Ronald Reagan formula, which was clearly NOT the Crossmen formula before the move. Issues involving YEA and the move also incense me, can't talk publicly.

  • @dachipmunk05

    @YEP321S I have to agree with that. I hate all the hype talk, lets just see how next season unfolds. I hope every year that I see Bones out on Final Night, unfortunately design and execution has been a serious issue.
    I look forward to seeing what the new staff will bring to Bones.

    @laduzi2 We'll see. Pre-season talk and hype many times falls far short of actuality. I see enough of it on Drum Corps Planet. The 2010 show was supposed to be that vehicle, and was roundly panned by the judges and also by the fans. Will it have the zen of shows like 1990, 1991, 1992, and 2001 for instance that really got people excited about what was going on with the corps? I'll wait and see if they get it right. If they do, they should make it if they inspire.

    @whiteteethfanatic It's funny. I hear people say that all the time. Hell I have been hearing that since the early 90's and what's so funny is that it is being directed at the band directors and band staff that teach at the " successful " BOA groups but the majority of those people were in DCI/DCA/WGI and they still teach DCI/DCA/WGI...

    @YEP321S Excuse me, but I happen to be one of those "kids" you're talking about. It's highly insulting that you would claim that the corps I marched and love is no longer the "Crossmen." I may not have marched a show that's as great as this one, but don't you dare claim that I, and everyone I marched with, are not Crossmen. Choose your words wisely.

    @whiteteethfanatic Yes. It's the crux of the issue at heart. maybe this year things will show a realization it's not the right direction unless they just change the corps name and do what they've been doing since they moved to TX. 8(

    @JessOnTheRun " Has never been as good since Thurston left ? " That's just not true..... 97/98 Hannum and Colin, hell man Mark Thurston was in the line at Crossmen when Hannum was teaching in 1980. Yea I personally like Mark's writing and feel better then the west coaster's that have come along but there have been some great years in there.

  • @YEP321S

    @CanyonBassCaptain I never mentioned "the kids". "Those kids" weren't given the vehicle to succeed. Period. Not their fault- never said it was. They're understandably touchy and defensive- but the corps design staff really never had a handle on what needed done. When they almost made finals, they lost momentum to a surging Madison Corps- again- the fault lie with leadership. Go ahead and be touchy. Prove I'm wrong with *results*, an entertaining package and some top 12's, and I'll be thrilled!

    I chose my words carefully. The corps isn't from the geater Philadelphia region where it came from, nor does it do anything remotely like what it did in terms of content and entertainment, nor has it had remotely the success it had before the move. Calling the support group the "Jazz Club" was an appropriate title at one time.
    The recently departed staff of the Texas corps tried to re-make the product into Ronald Reagan, and failed at the DCI level. Insulting- only if you take it that way.

  • @YEP321S
    @YEP321S 14 років тому

    @drumcorps0junkie
    Unsure about that. Too simple an answer. Unless this year's Metheny show indicates a real turn to what made the Crossmen well-loved, they may as well call the corps "Lone Star" and change everything about the corps. It's not what it was. Location, type of kids, style, nothing.
    Just maybe better off performing under another name, and it makes me sad to say it.
