Overkill for a Mobile DJ????
My Truck Channel ua-cam.com/users/tacorick
Not really (if you know how to use it properly). I bought one a year ago and it has been one of the best purchases I have ever made for my sound system. Wonderful eq and crossover, excellent limiters to protect my speakers and the automatic feedback suppressor is a killer feature.
I agree. Big emphasis on the if you know how to use it properly.
Not overkill, the driveracks are one of the best in the market for eq and stuff
I love them! Have 4. I do use all of the processors within the unit. The auto eq works very good for eq-ing the room as a startup mix. Also makes up gain for my controllers which don’t really have enough. Feedback suppression is money!
DJ Rick Web I don’t think it’s overkill. I use it because it’s got auto EQ, and crossover. It does make your speakers sound better because the driverack will EQ the room.
I think it’s the best tool
The PA 2 is a million times better than the original drive rack PA. The fact that the PA 2 can be controlled by a phone is fantastic; i sure wish my old drive rack PA could do that!
I'm running up and down stairs right now messing with a PA
It’s not really overkill you should have a limiter and eq and anti feedback on most systems and it’s nice to be able cut at around 30 to 50hz on subs it especially important to have feedback suppression so you can get a cleaner mic signal as you can put your gain higher. The dbx driver rack pa2 is worth it and setting deley between tops and subs can improve how natural the bass sounds and can stop the bass sounding detached from the rest of the music.
Hey Leo, I'd like to hear more about this and how you adjust your drive rack.
100% improve all kinds actually does make your subs and tops come alive. I just got dbx eq for now i can get more out of the sub
E di wow
@@raymundangeles7192Shut up.
A bit of a late comment haha, I bought a driverack PA2 recently. Baring in mind that I am a begineer DJ/livesound/lighting engineer. In my opinion the price is just right for these speaker processors, so they aren't overkill, they're there to enhance your sound and bring it to the next level! 😄
To optimize signal to noise ratio, the signal path should be at unity all the way to the amps. The amps should be at the lowest possible gain for the desired output level. If you leave your amps at max gain before clipping it will amplify any noise along the signal path and introduce its own noise. If you use the minimum gain on the amp you avoid both noise sources (signal path + amp)
Unity, as in 0 on any mixers / gear in the chain prior to the amps, regardless of internal or external to the speaker?
Hey Rick, Your video was a huge help in setting my PA2 up. I'm super busy and didn't have the time to read all the details. But your way throught made it so i can install this in a venue and adjust as needed...Great Video!!!!
Dude, I've been pulling my hair out trying to reduce the output gain. Thanks to you now I see you can control it with a combo of the compressor and the limiter.🤟
I have been watching your videos for awhile. You are not only knowledgeable, you are easy to follow along with. I just bought one of these this week. This video will help make sense on how to set it up. Looking forward to your next video on the other settings of the driverack pa 2.
That’s what I did, today, Rick. I watched this video of your more then once, when out to Walmart and got a cheap router cause I own 3 of the dbx driverack units and I’m going to be using one tonight at my men’s hockey league
I do own 2 of these dbx DriveRacks as well in my appartment. One in my living room 19” rack, and one in my 12 RU Gator Road case in my bedroom. I use a Mackie 1604VLZ-4 main mixer, on my desk, & a Denon Professional 10 channel rack mount mixer with Bluetooth built in, for my bedroom tv audio mixer. I like the Blue LCD screen on the face of the system so I could customize my name and location on it. In my hometown, we use one dbx Driverack PA2 in a theatre downtown, at our major jr. hockey rink’s aux rink
I own both DBX driverack PA2 and venu360 and luv them. Both units are a huge leap forward into speaker management over the driverack260. On top of it not expensive! I highly recommend this unit for anyone putting together a PA system.
Thank you. I’ve had mine for about 2 years and finally a video showing me how to set it up properly. I still need to learn about the bells and whistles but you definitely helped me out big time!
Hey Rick, thanks for the video. In addition, I (and I'm sure other DJs who use the DBX PA2 DriveRack) are looking forward and would love to see videos explaining and detailing the other DriveRack features as well (ex. Anti-Feedback; setting up the RTA mic; etc.).
Has this been done yet? Trying to figure out the other features too! Lol
For the most part your video was great - thank you for putting it together! I just wanted to point out an error - at around 30mins you talk about meter levels and you are trying to get 0db on your DJ mixer to line up with 0db on the DBX - what you didn't notice is that the mixer's meter scale is dBVU and the DBX meter scale is dBFS - in other words, the DJ mixer has a VU meter and the DBX has a peak meter - those are two very different scales, and 0 dBVU is not the same as 0 dBFS!! Further, you go on to claim that +4 is rare in the DJ world, and quite to the contrary, it's actually very common (on the outputs).
So, to sum up, 0 dBVU is around -18 dBFS (which you initially had correct until you switched the DBX to -10), and the inputs to the DBX should be set to +4 (pro audio gear levels) if you're using the XLR outputs from most any DJ mixer/controller. If you're going to use the RCA outputs, then you'd use -10 (for consumer gear audio levels). Running your DBX up almost to 0 dBFS is leaving nearly no amount of headroom and you're pretty much guaranteed to clip, which, in the audio world, is very bad.
So for anyone reading this, if you're using a DJ mixer with balanced XLR/TRS outputs, make sure your downstream gear is set to +4.
The more I read about this topic, the more it scares me :D.
@@RetiredRhetoricalWarhorse What part scares you? As a general rule of thumb if the output of the device is XLR/TRS (1/4") then it's +4 - if it's an RCA output, it's -10 - not much more to it. Also, if your input levels are super low while it's on +4, switch it to -10 - and if it's super high while it's on -10, switch it to +4.
Thanks Rick..this is a great post..I substitute the The Subs to Mids..now I can use the Low output for monitors..either in stereo or Left/ mono..perfect for karaoke shows 👍👍
Gosh I’ve been waiting for this for years!!!! Thank you so much for making this video!
And it would be awesome if they would do an update and loads more speakers into it
Extremely helpful. I bought one and used your config and I never had my Yamahas sound soo crisp and clear. Love it. I have the DXR15mkII, dzr15, dxs18 to name my big ones.
I have several Dbx Drive Rack PA2 worked both passive & powered speakers
I have been using DBX driveracks, various models, for decades. One thing about the DB2 and Venu compared previous models is that they are more sensitive to brownouts than the previous models. If you are plugging into mains power and are using appropriate gauge wire, this won't be an issue, but if you're running on generators it's possible for bass hits to drop the input voltage and brownout the PA2 which will cause it to freeze or reboot. This can happen to the PA, PA+ and PX but they are far less sensitive. I only know this because I am often running sound systems on generator power.
Like you said. It's overkill. A rack mount crossover is fine and most new powered subs come with built in crossovers. Great vid. Thanks
dj rick thank you for the video ! honestly spot on ! great job thank you ....
my system sounds great
I would say its not overkill for the mobile dj. Especially, if you know all the uses of each program. I’ve been using a Driverack Pa for a decade. Compressor/Limiter protects my Mackie Srm450 for blowing out. Subharmonic can make the bass sound better. Feedback Eliminator and EQ’s kills the feedback 😅and make your speakers sound better. Of course the uses of crossover And etc……
dude you wayyyyyyyyy undersold that drive, especially subharmonic synthesis
Hey Rick Best DriveRack explanation Video ever, finally working as it should thank you very much
tried other videos and none of them where that clear as yours
Great to hear
@@DJRickWeb hey i wann use 3 way speakers with this unit can it be done ?
Yes that's what it was designed for. 3 way output to amps powering the passive setup
@@DJRickWeb i m hooking up rcf ttl6a powered speakers to it and thanks for reply
Nice to see a Dj luse gear properly. The coolest thing about your full range hack is that I now can setup a delay stack halfway down the room. I have done this a few times with a separate delay device and it really makes a difference in a large or long caverness type of hall.
Not overkill if you love great sound....I have the mic for it and I eq rooms all the time....and I have had loads of compliments and no feedback!!!
True
Hey I've got 2x peavy 215s and analogue mixer and a peavey pvi amp but no subs. I play in a band, how much would this improve the sound you think?
@bachelor 101 it will reduce the weight of your rig, and it will improve the sound. It's worth it.
@@thisdj83 yes massively improved the sound i got one
Most professionally produced songs master the bass frequencies as mono even though the rest of it is stereo. Of course you could run the rig with subs on either side below your tops (which isn’t a good setup due to the uneven bass output pattern from the interference from spacing the subs apart laterally), but from my experience running live sound and djing and with audio engineering, I think it’s probably best to just let the DriveRack DSP sum the bass going to the subs to mono and send that to all subs to avoid any phase interference if songs are mixed differently.
Hey Rick, nice video, very clear and you explained everything great.
I just picked up that unit and your video will be very helpful to me.
Thank you for Taking the time to make this video.
Peace.
I have been in sound and light in high school and trade school i found that when playing Mexican music its a must need and not over kill
All the way from South Africa, Johannesburg
Yes, it seems like overkill for a wedding DJ setup. However I helped do a 500 person monthly House, EDM music gig. So once we locked in the sound. It was easy to pull it up each time at the venue. The room auto EQ function is ok. I generally use it to get an idea of what might be wrong with the room. The great thing is that you can turn it off and tune the system by ear. The EQ does doo a good job on the lower end freqs.
I don't use the Feedback but that could be useful in somewhere like a church or a band.
I like setting an HP filter for the subs around 40 or 45HZ, -24db..
I do use the Compressor. I figure it might help save my gig from blowing out if there is an accident.
All in all, I feel as though better sound could be had with a DR.
The larger the system, the more I am tempted to use a DR.
Awesome stuff. Just got a drive rack pa2. about to help my buddy set his up. He has been struggling.
pretty damn comprehensive explanation. Thank you very much for this upload dude. I'm gonna bookmark it for whenever i get my hands on one of those.
Use the delay on the remote tops (mid channel) if they are a good distance away, to stop the the mains from clashing and sounding like chaos. Good if you have the tops outside or in another room.
We were able to use a LinkSys Router+WiFi, put it in wireless bridge mode so we can connect the rack to our other existing WiFi network. makes it even easier when going on-site vs. being at home.
Mine came the other day-thanks for this video i love it!
It’s overkill. True, however it makes a system sound better especially when EQ is set to your liking. Also I’ve used the electronic crossover with larger systems like Cerwin Vega or JBLs. Love this video. Well done.
Thanks Rick, have 2 of these for years now but with your tips can now use them for delay tops instead of using the aux outs of our digital boards. If you work with bands, like we do, the other features are fantastic also. Keep up the good videos, even here in Brazil we watch you!
Dj web you are a nice teacher.i have learned alot.yes the video is so educative.thanks alot bro
Thank you!! I have one and I was frustrated because I cannot upgrade it, no firmware for QSC 12.2
I just bought one and I can't get the app to work either on my MacBook Pro or my Samsung Galaxy S10 because the apps have not been upgraded probably since 2017 or 2018. What's worse is that they do not have any of my EV speakers or subs in their menu
Dbx is not compatible with mac. Only works on windows. And you must be doing something wrong because I was using an s10 in the video. Lastly, EV is not listed due to company reasons. DBX is part of Harmon technology. Under the harmon brand is dbx, sound craft, jbl, akg, crown, audio technica and a few others. They dont support ev because it's a rival company. I do agree they should update the app though. 2017 is pretty dated.
@@DJRickWeb I had to follow-up with you. I had to contact Linksys to ensure that I was setting up my router appropriately. Originally it was set up using a CD-rom 6 years ago. They helped my reset the router and change the network name to my DJ name (which made it easier to locate). Much love to you for walking through all this detail (as I just finished doing it all to my setup). Looking forward to your other videos on the other features!!
Thanks Rick!! Great job on the video! I just bought one last week..
Great job! , this helps so much I’ve been using mind for a bit now but this is great! Thank you !
I have 2 drive racks myself lol One for each controller case I have DDJ-SZ and DDJ-RZX :-)
I followed your steps on the driverack I guess I must of not been using it the right way lol Dam now i barely have to turn it up with all the crossover settings and don't even have to touch my highs knobs at all first time that has happened. Great instructions thanks. I did what you said and used not listed even though I do have the VRX tops and bottoms. :-)
Those vrx tops scream. And the amp is a beef on the powered ones. Pushed a +10 db gain signal to them and they didnt clip
@@DJRickWeb Yes they are LOUD!!!! lol I have to turn them down from the settings you recommended
just got my DBX pa2 cant wait to hook up my subs..
Thanks for this vid Sir Ric! Got my dbx driverack recently, but the thing is, I only have a single power amp for my 4 speaker box. Really appreciate if you could enlighten me on how to custom set-up may driverack... kudos!
Passive Speakers have built in crossovers as well. Some are just better than others.
DJ Rick, you’re awesome bro. Thanks a lot for making this video:)
Hey man , were can I find the video on the other features of the drive rack pa2 , I just got one and I'm trying to learn more about it ... This video right here taught me alot , so thank you 😊
Thanks for the video. Been on UA-cam for about week researching for my dj setup. It’s easy but complicated lol. I normally use two qsc 12.2 with two ksubs. But I’m doing a bigger venue and want to bring my two mackie sr1530z 3 way 15”. The problem with those speakers is they tend to overload. I didn’t want to Dailey chain them from my main setup. I think now by watching the video. I can get my older driverack pa+ to do what you did with 3 different outputs. That’s what I really need. Besides doing it the easy way and somehow connecting another pa mixer to just control those. But that’s too much stuff when I can simplify it. Hopefully I can figure it out
Bro thats f*c*en good help bro for people like me that are a littlw bit new to this🙌🏻
On my dbx drive 2 the mid green lights are off. An I don't know how to turn it on so I can use the mid signal. This video is a big help to me thanks a lot for doing the demo. I would like learn about the other controls on the dbx drive rack....
I am making a future video on that
Hi DJ Rick, good show. I want to correct you on one thing: for consumer equipment the setting should be -10 and for professional equipment the setting should be +4. Never the other way around.
You are right Wilson. -10 creates a loud hissing sound when no music is being played. Great input, BTW, r u from 🇬🇭?
Wow you should totally check out the cool Tacoma channel. LOL
This might be one of the funniest most subtle comments ever made on your videos hahaha

This question is for Rick or whomever would like to answer.
I have used Driveracks ito set up churches, swore by them and have recommended them to practically anyone with a PA system. Now it comes to getting one for my little living room setup and I'm suddenly stuck. I have a very nice digital piano and mic setup in my living room. Up until now, ive switch between active studio monitors (two Adam) and active PA speakers (two EV Evolve 50). I don't like the way any of these speakers look in the room so I'm deciding to try switching to a pair of floor standing high-end hi-fi speakers and a very beefy stereo receiver. My other choice would be a pair of QSC K8.2 but they would be down by my feet pointing up. I want the RTA and EQ functions but is PA2 overkill for such what I'm doing? My mixer (DLZ Creator has a nice EQ but my ears are no competition with an RTA. Another problem would be going from XLR on the PA2 ft the RCAs on the receiver. I thought a receiver would be quieter/cleaner for this than my pro amp with fan noise. Thanks for your input!
Would the PA2 b
Thanks for awesome video, Job well done Rick!
Just bought the PA2. They now have a preset for mains, satalite L&R and sub(s). Not sure if this was available when you made the video.
Great Video Rick! Thank you for the info!
You have the Pa2 in your kit pushed me over the top to purchase this. Boy was I in over my head! I programmed it for my gear and thought I was done. Nope, the day of the gig I was single-handed. Set up my lights, speakers, and all the DJ gear. But when it was time for soundcheck nothing happened. I could see that my SX2 was sending sound, I could see my mixer receiving and outputting, still no tunes. I could see the that PA2 input going off but NO SOUND. I almost flipped! The event was starting, they were waiting on me and I was trying not too meltdown. so I just started pressing stuff and...... The PA2 was on mute the WHOLE time, I was a mess the whole gig, but my clients enjoyed the event and tipped 25% of the invoice so that was a good thing. Hooking up the Router and using my tablet is beyond me right now, but I am looking forward to digesting this video.
Lol. Been there. The little mute buttons under the output trip me up every so once and a while. Why is there no music on the left. Is it the cable speaker. Oh it's just on mute damit
Cool video…👍🏼 Next time talk about the microphone setup with the drive rack Db2
Good day , if your console deliver balance signal +4 DB you must set the driverack +4 DB , if you are sending unbalance signal to the driverack as your controller you must ser -10 db after that you have to set the gain structure.
nice one bro...from philippines here...thanks for this.
Hi Dj RW. Just downgraded from my ev etx's .now im running evolve 50s and just added a elx 200 18sp sub. Not sure which configuration should I use on my driverack pa2?
Set crossovers and use graphic eq to your liking
Should I use the 2way mono with mono sub setting?
I don’t believe it’s overkill at all. The auto EQ feature absolutely makes your system sound better. It feeds a known signal through the system and out the speakers. The dbx mic then listens to that sound and corrects the system so that it theoretically is hearing the same exact sound as the Driverack is producing. That eliminates a lot of unwanted harmonics that the specific room magnifies. At the same time and because of the same reason, it will also make up for deficiencies in the equipment and calculate the EQ curve(s) needed to make the sound right. If you’re not using it, you’re missing out on the best feature of this piece of equipment.
Good stuff💪🏼💪🏼. Does this or any other model driverack have a expander feature?
Yep look at the venue 360
@DJRickWeb how would you configure the crossover for a pair of Bose F1 / 812 speaker setup?
“Doesn’t make it sound any better”
I think that’s the whole idea of it
Was meaning like if your speakers are trash its not gonna majically be crystal clear. It just allows for tunning which to the average person is not the noticable
@@DJRickWeb gotcha
Have you ever expirience (HIGH THRUST HOLD NORMALL ILLUMINATING IS COLOR GREEN)
But while the drive rack pa2 is on long time its BECOME ILLUMINATING COLOR ORANGE.
What a dope video. I still need a driverack for dummies course. How does this work with a mixer? I have a behringer x1622 with USB, 4 tops and 4 subs
Great i was wondering how you got to use the 3 outputs. I got the driverack PA2 mainly for the anti-feedback feature it works great but think i need to learn more about it. My only problem is that the PA2 isn't updated for all the newer model speakers Profiles, would of been nice to get regular updates.
Any company that puts out regular updates in the DJ world is a gem lol
Dj Rick, love your videos and thank you. Does adding a power amp to a mixer make your system louder?
Ultimately your powered speakers or amp-speaker combo determines how loud the system will be. Your mixer and processing units are there to control the sound.
Am learning my Dj
I have the OverEasy settings completely OFF for both my highs and subs. They don't protect your amps from clipping as much when driven hard and pushes your SPL down.
Awesome tutorial, thanks. Buddy.
Got a dbx pa2 setting gain structure shouldn’t it be left at +4db if your using balanced Xlr outputs, Using mine with a 900nsx2 mixer. Got one because of your video.
Great video and very insightful thank you brother
So I got two RCF 12’s how could I set it up since the tops connect to the subs? Thanks
I want to know this too. I have two ALTO 15" tops that connect to one Sub. So signal from the Driverack is only 2 outs that go into the Sub, right? (without a Driverack the mixer out L & R would just go in the Sub. Sub Out L to top L and out R to Top R.)
Amazing tutorial Rick, because of your channel I purchased this device, so thank you! I have a few questions: At the gain staging part where you're making sure the Dj mixer is @ 0db are the gains from your Yamaha 12 mixer at 0db/Unity as well? Also, how would you configure or set up your subs if they're plugged in through an AUX channel of the external mixer but want to integrate it w/ the DBX?
Yes Yamaha is also at 0
Hi there thanks for the great and informative video, but I would like to know on the inputs of the rack the signal coming in can it be clip but to find that the output are not clipping or distorting
No. If the input signal is clipping it will be distorted coming out. Common gain structure
You should reverse your Butterworth curves on your lows. Sharp on the right, gradual on the left. The way you have it set up now, you're sending up to 2k hertz to your subs, which will muddy up your lows.
Thank you very much for your video sir
You can use a Crossover cable to a computer also.
Will you be making a part 2 to this? Still trying to learn the bells and whistles before the crossover part.
Great Informative Video Thank You!!!
I just finished watching this video and thanks for the whole explanation, so clear and honest. Very appreciated! Rick, there is anyway to ask you in private more technical information about how to set up a more complex audio system? I'm really interested to buy this item, but would be great to have more info because We already have an active sound system and We would like to know if dbx PA2 can be useful or not. Thanks in any case. Alex
Thanks for great video ! But if you have the speaker in the list ,, i have srx728 / and srx 712 , and put it in . Do dbx pa2 right crossover and eq ?
Yes the defaults will go by manufacturer recommendations
@@DJRickWeb lovly thanks for answer! I
Ironically I don't use this for speakers systems only, I mainly have it for my streaming setup for its eqs, compressors, limiters, instead of having them separated, the limiter does wonders on its own, I be screaming into the mic or playing guitar while singing and when the limiter activates it really feels like an actual limiter that lovers the fader for you instead of something thst sounds squished, I run my amps and mics to a mixer, then from the mixer to the drive rack, and have it set up to send all frequencies to the high outputs only, and from the left and right outputs on high, to my focusrite 1 and 2 input, for streaming and audio recording
@dj Rick web also the compressor helps the microphone travel longer
It’s not overkilled you need it
I think you are skipping some good features. If you are playing inside of different venues the original driverack for $1-200 used can crossover your system and do a lot of useful things. The RTA you skipped over is great because it flattens the room out and you can save each venue as a preset system/eq. Most people are not that great at fishing for different problem frequencies bouncing around each venue and that feature can solve a lot of common problems. If it can help my system with a pile of microphones from a whole band surely a left right dj setup is easier to manage. Id say most people could use the older driverack for 1/3 the price and get the rta mic with the money they save.
Of course you need this as a Dj. It will make it your system sound better. It is not overkill. Eq is always needed, compression or limiters are needed to protect your speakers, feed back suppression is key when you have a mic. If you are a DJ, save yourself the hassle and just buy a driverack.
Hi! Great Video! 👌 Can You tell me what is the best way to configure crossover for 2+1?(LD dave 15 g3) How to setup crossover settings?

Correct. Pa2 has wireless control via a router
Stop sleeping on DJ Rick Web! #salutethedj
I need to get one, nice vid
I have a 4 way system : sub, mid, mid high and high. Would I need 2 x driveracks as they are split into 3 .
Probably just find a better solution. Like the driverack venue 360. Which has 4 outputs
I don't remember you saying anyhing about setting up EQ manually. Plus passive speakers do have an internal passive crossover too
Some do. Some dont... depends. But video got to long. Eq in a seprate video
It depends if your bi amping or not..
If you're not using the RTA mic and allowing the software to process the frequencies recorded by the RTA mic and processed by the rack, it isa a waste of time. Its a great piece of equipment if properly used in the hands of a capable technician, if not, its like giving a loaded gun to child.
