Thanks Chiefpep, I did this conversion yesterday. This morning I enjoyed a bright, fresh looking dashboard! Your tutorial made it a pretty easy. This was my first time doing soms soldering, if I can do it... anyone can. Two remarks: 1. When you order the kit from eBay (Lightenupgrade) a white diffusor is included in the kit, so no need to make one form diffusor paper anymore. 2. The LED's are in serie in duo's. If one LED is broken/failing, the LED above or below the LED is also not working. When you solder the LED's behind the screen it's a good idea to do this per row (not per column). I did first row 1, 3 en 5. If a LED is not okay, two LED's wil not light (one is new soldered, the other one was working before and is located above or below the new LED). By doing it this way, you know for sure which LED is not working, otherwise you have two possible failing LED's. I hope my explanation is clear. Bedankt man, die filmpje was een uitstekend hulpmiddel voor dit leuke project!
Very good as a tutorial. As a complete novice to taking bikes apart and soldering I was able to follow the video easily and yesterday with your help managed to carry out the dashboard backlight conversion to my Pan st1300 successfully. Thank you for the video.
I have just bought a st1300 and this video was excellent , firstly to look out for problems and secondly showing why you need to take it to a reputable suspension expert. Thanks.
I replaced the LEDs on the dashboard of my STX1300 2004 model yesterday, using this tutorial as a reference. The Tamiya plastic plate 0.5mm was perfect for the diffuser. Also, I was able to get the meter needle back to the exact position by turning the main switch on and off as someone mentioned. I am very pleased with the appearance of the dashboard. Thank you very much.😃
Great to hear! 👍 I've used the method of the needle standing still aswell. Works but you have to be very careful not to have any wind blowing in because even a slight blow can adjust the needle if it doesn't sit against the pin.
Good video, about to do the same with my ST13 clocks. Not happy with the method for putting the needles back so as an electronics engineer I'm going to look at doing it electronically. I would emagine it's a pulse train to the dials so once i've determined what it is I should be able to supply a contant pulse train to give a set position of the needle before I take it apart and do the same putting it back. I have a calibrated speedometer as the bike is ex police so want to make sure it goes back exactly in the right place.
Great if your method works! I just used this method (Total of three with great results) also because the video should be usable for your 'average' DIY rider. Thanks for the comment! 👍
Suggestion. If you work on pulling off the speedo dial indicator, put a plastic bag under the spoons/lever devices. This stops surface scratches. This is what watch makers do. I’d also suggest wearing cotton gloves as these atop sweat and oils.
Great video! I followed you every step of the way. Thank you! I didn't have any diffuser paper so used 2 layers of milk bottle plastic and it worked a treat 👌 Also... what is the knocking noise at 52:05? Mine is exactly the same.
Question is how long paper will remain OK in motorcycle conditions. You can consider using a diffusor cut out of the side of a plastic milk container. Cheap, readily available and highly moisture resistant!
I have good hopes the seals around the dashboard which contains a lot of electronics plus the fact that the dash is surrounded by the fairing it all stays nice and dry inside. Next to that, the 'paper' feels more like really thin plastic rather than paper. It also was designed for strong lights which can go pretty hot after a while. So I am guessing it's pretty resistable for the elements. Still: The milkbottle tip is a very nice one. Thanks! 👍
That's awesome well done and thank you. Currently ride a 2014 R1200GSA LC but always wanted an ST1300 Pan European and the dash colour has awlays bothered me. Didn't know it could be changed, now I do. When I do eventually get one I'll definately do this mod. When you got to the part where you had to remove and replace individual LEDs I thought "oh shit"... but you actually made it look really easy. Thanks for the great video. Quick question: what would you do to the polariser to make the digital numbers black on the light background? And did you sell the practice dash and for how much? That was a great idea by the way. 😎
Thank you for your response! I already sold the practice dash just the other day. I know you can change the digital numbers from white to black but I can't remember where I found the info... I know it's quit easy. You'll find it if you look/Google it up.
Usually you have to rotate the polariser by 90 degrees. You might get lucky flipping it but that’s not normal FWIR. You can buy polariser plastic online. Cut to size. Just rotate the current polariser on top of the polarise plastic sheet you bought until everything goes black and then you right orientation. Cut and install. You can try 45 degree cuts too.
What would be great is a dash dimmer. Do you know what controller is being used for the backlights. Very likely a TI part if it has a string of LEDs. There’s usually an input to these devices where you can change the PWM (either by s/w or by and external pin). A simple microcontroller and a rotary encoder could do this. ATTINY85 for example.
You can definitely add a dimmer to control the SMD LEDs. A simple way to do this is indeed by using a microcontroller like the ATTINY85 and a rotary encoder. The ATTINY85 can adjust the PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signals to dim the LEDs. There are usually inputs on the LED controller for this purpose, which can be adjusted via software or an external pin. For the software, you would need to read the rotary encoder's input and adjust the PWM output accordingly. Libraries for handling PWM and rotary encoders are widely available for the ATTINY85, making the coding part manageable. This setup allows for smooth brightness control and is relatively easy to implement yourself.
Mooi duidelijke video. Ik wil dit zelf ook gaan doen met mijn ST1300. Als ik er blauwe leds in soldeer , met het witte diffusion papier, dan wordt dit gedeelte van het display toch gewoon blauw?
Nice job im just want someone to install a digital display instead but the display would have to be bigger than the original or a sheet of black plastic would have to be used on top as a filler
I have a burn display on my st, do you know what kind of polarized film should i looking for? Need both dark and silver one or how can I order the same as the original? Sorry if my english may not be so good. Excelente tutorial, gracias saludos cordiales!! Cheers
Thanks for showing this interesting video. I have a question and your comments are very welcome. My ST 1300 (No ABS) LCD panel lighting stopped working. I can barely read the mileage and fuel gauge. Changing the light color will re-illuminate the LCD Panel? The other inquiry is, will a Dashboard 37100-MCS-315 (ST 1300A 2012) work on my 2005 no ABS 37100-mcs-305?
Yes, all dashboards will work. And it's pretty strange that *all* the lights stopped working. Sounds like a fuse or loose contact. Otherwise, the lights can be changed and could cure the problem... SOmetimes they do get loose. That's a matter of soldering them back,
I would not have a problem pulling my dash out; however, I would not feel comfortable doing the job. Would you do the conversion for me, or recommend someone to do the work on my St1300 dash conversion?
Yes, try to send it to a party who dares to do it. I have a Miles dash here. You can buy it from me if you like. Send me an e-mail on: chiefpep14@gmail.com
Nice Video!! Are you able to access the peanut bulbs 194 this way too? I need to replace the cheap LED bulbs that I installed 3 years ago (they are currently flickering). I ended up taking all the Tupperware off and took 5 hours to do. This time I am looking for a shortcut to access the headlight bulbs. Also, this time I ordered high-quality LED's.. Your advice is greatly appreciated.
