    That was great; never thought the gearbox would hold together under that type of power.
    The standard modification in the 80"s was upgrading to the 540 silver can, and we thought that was quick lol.
    Having said that, when teenage interest peaked in that era - somewhere around 1988 - and higher end 4wd models (Hotshots, Boomerangs, Thundershots, PB mini Mustangs and Kyosho Optimas) were common place, also the king of 2wd - The RC10''s - you'd be sent to play on your own if you turned up with a Grasshopper. It was like having a hole in your shoes lol. But we can now all reflect on what a wonderful & iconic car the Grasshopper is. Definitely one of my favourites.
    Thanks for another great video Glen. Much appreciated.

      I ran the Kyoshoa 240st Le Mans back in those days in a Hornet and it was blistering, nobody could touch my car when we would drag race. I then went onto the Trinity Slot Machine and that was even faster. 2 great motors for the Tamiyas. The 360ST Le Mans was a great motor for trucks, ran that in a Blackfoot.

    As far as i'm concerned, the Gh and GH2 were the best all round bashers, in terms of speed, cost of repairs, maintenance, availability, popularity, etc etc etc. I'll never forget getting my first GH way back in 91, with a 540 silver can, and on xmas day ripping it around the gravel n dirt on a patch of wasteland we kids knew as the "Wastey" haha the things kids say! we got dirty, oil on our clothes, and we had so much fun! AND we learned basic mechanics n problem solving whilst also getting out the house n not stuck on computers n phones like nowadays! win win win! haha Awesome vid!

      I had a Grasshopper when friends struggled with nikko stuff. I ruled! The Grasshopper and Hornet are the best bashers ever. I have collected and restored all the RC I dreamed about as a kid. Bruiser, brat, frog, Wild Willy, hotshot, Boomerang and Wild one to name a few. I always come back to my original GH. It's still the best fun out of them all by a garden mile and it's not just rose tinted specs or nostalgia. Parts are rugged, readily available and cheap.
      Love mine, and I would never be without at least 1 GH or Hornet in my collection.

      @@Rich77UK LOL I bet you sure did rule with your Grasshopper while your unfortunate friends only had Niko's!
      Aww thats awesome, I too have bought many rc cars I dreamed of as a kid too. And I could not agree more, the GH's unbeatable for all the reasons you mentioned. I recently built a GH1 for a family friends son and he absolutely loves it, which makes me all the happier! My memories of being a kid, the excitement of owning and running those rc cars, is literally priceless and I cherish every second of those wonderful times way back...

      Heh, some of us did stuff like this back then. I took a Graupner Speed 600BB which was a 550 can motor, a Power Mos 48 ESC from my boat, and two packs in series and stuck it all in my Hornet. It completely redefined undrivable - especially considering the fact that the ESC did not have reverse or a brake lol. Later I tired that set up in a Bush Devil and a Bear Hawk. Needless to say it didn't go very well.

    @Tamiya Legends,
    I had two Grasshopper1, i buy and build the Grasshopper in the Jear 1990 and their still running today!
    In my first Grasshopper i had a very old Vintage Brushed Motor "Graupner Speed 500 Race",
    and i must say the Motor is very Powerful and the Grasshopper is Really very Fast with this Motor!
    But in my other Grasshopper1 is a Very old Vintage Brushed Kyosho MEGA-MOTOR 12x2 Paved Oval, and the Motor goes 37000 RPMs. When i drive with this Grasshopper on the Street the Motor Killed the Backtires, and the Grasshopper is VERY VERY FAST!!!
    But i must say my favourite Motor is the "Graupner Speed 500 Race"! This Motor is 30 Jears old, and it runs and runs and runs and runs!!! I Love my Grasshopper with this Amazing Motor!

      Yeah I would imagine a hot Brushless on 3s would kill the car, but saying that you probably couldn’t get it to go straight long enough to hit full power 😂👊🏻

    Hi there, I am a single dad with very limited amounts of money. I want to get into RC cars and have my mind set on a grasshopper or hornet as that’s what my brother had as kids and would never let me play with!
    I want to be able to upgrade the car with better motor ect do with that in mind which one would you recommend I get or do you have another suggestion for something similar that would be better.
    Thanks for taking the time to read and hopefully reply with some advice.
    Rich.

      Hi Rich,
      I’d probably go for the Hornet as it has better shocks and it comes with a 540 motor. The only upgrade you need is the full bearing kit for it, very cheap on eBay. And you’re good to go and have some great fun 🚗💨💨

    Is it ok to use a brushless motor in a 4 wheel drive car like a big wig?

    • @TAMIYALegends
      @TAMIYALegends  5 років тому

      padistedor
      Hi buddy,
      Yes it’s fine to go Brushless, the car has to be fully ball raced and I wouldn’t go too high on the motor kv, something like a 3300kv using a 2s Lipo would be perfect for the BigWig 😊👊🏻

    I've made a car do 40, seemed faster than this, but that was in person not on a camera. Perhaps running the car past a stationary camera at a low angle would look more representative of the speed it was doing?

      Pablo668
      Yeah you’re absolutely spot on buddy, the camera distance from the car was poor 😞
