Oh my God, you said exactly what I was thinking. This car was so much fun back in like 86. I remember there was a 4 x 4 Porsche that I want to have too.
Same here. I remember saving my pocket money to replace the bumper constantly, which I always managed to break in a few sessions of driving - and of course I was constantly wearing out tyres from running it on asphalt. Ended up upgrading to the Thundershot, and fitted an uprated motor (Dynatech 02 I think it was called?) and man, that thing was fast - but the Hornet is definitely the one I have all the nostalgia vibes for.
Wow. This took me back. Running down to my local hobby store to pick up my first one 39 years ago. Saved up my paper route money for a few months for one.
I got one of the original ones for Christmas when I was about 5 in the mid 80's... It didn't last long before I crashed it and broke the front suspension on one side. Years later and many, many repairs it was still going strong. Lots of Araldite!
When I was about 10, my Father gave me a Frog for Christmas, and one for himself. Such fun building and racing together. Still one of the best father/son hobbies out there!
So fun seeing the Hornet again. Yes, it was the entry model for me too. Dad bought it and we built it together. As I got older, I replaced all the bushings with bearings, and upgraded the motor. It was so fast after the upgrade, that it would just roll if you turned at speed. Anyway, lots of fun times !
Memories. This was the very first real RC car I ever had and it was given to my by my buddy who lived next door after his mom bought him the new and improved Grasshopper. The OG Hornet was nothing short of pure JUNK!!! Everything was made from the most brittle crappy plastic and just hitting pebbles would crack the rear end. I replaced the rear end like 5 times in a couple of months and we didn't have any jumps!
Oh man the memories. I wore that thing out. Tires, main gears(from doing full WOT then full reverse spins), wore out the gear box, from having it wear over stuff. I'm sure piles of other stuff. Such a fun RC car back in 1987 or 88. Looks like they adopted some of the Frog parts for IRS etc... Nice. Wow! those sounds even sound the same!
Reminds me of my Grasshopper. That is what started it all. My dad read an article called "Hop up you Hopper" in R/C Car Action and that was it... A few parts and we went racing at Roadrunner in Houston, TX. We spent the next 10 years racing in multiple locations in North Houston. Man I miss those days!
I bought all my cars I had as a kid as wrecked ones from ebay and fixed them all up. New shells professionally painted and now they on the shelf in my office
@@proximitybeejay3673me too. My Dad is an electrician on told me how the motor windings work. I pulled apart used 540 motors, unpicked the armature windings. I got some off cuts of armature winding wire, rewound the armatures with less windings…… less windings= faster…. I could beat my friends in a race with cheap parts (that had pretty short lives) I eventually took this to the extreme, where it would start melting the motor end as it only had bushes not bearings and was very close to a short circuit, like it would start to weld the battery terminals in the plugs on the “oh so wonderful” 7.2 NiCads. Fun times!
@TRAVELER197 I knew your pain. My cousin had the 1:10 Tamiya "Frog" and never let me drive it. However, I did manage to obtain a 1:32 Tamiya "Hotshot Junior" (Mini 4WD) for my birthday one year. Whilst it wasn't remote control, it was still one of my favourite toys
I just had a flashback of using my mom's GIANT old SEARS Linen Scissors/Shears to cut out my Tamiya Lexan back in the 80's. Didn't have a Dremel and Curved body scissors back then. You want nostagia? Try cutting out a body and assembling a kit with a worn out #2 phillips (instead of JIS). LOL, that will bring back some memories!
That's cool! I was pretty spoiled as a kid. I have 4 RC's but the Hornet was my favorite! It's lasted the longest and was probably the fastest. I also had the 4WD Hot Shot but the battery drained too fast on it. The 540 is still plenty for this bad boy. Pretty cool upgrades and brings back memories!
Who remembers beatties in Manchester? Used to be packed in there on a Saturday, screen playing with various tamiya kits , i remember saving up like mad my paper round money wanting a falcon , & ended up with the grasshopper 360 (motor) it was weak af but the 1200mah battery lasted a full half an hour , then got a parma modified in there & it flew like a falcon , magical feelings when you hop up your steed
Hornet was my first RC, saved my money from my paper round and pumping gas to get it. Loved it. I still have an original Hornet and I have the ReRe XB edition. I WILL be getting one of these. God I love Tamiya for who they are, what they stand for and what they single handedly made available to the masses. I hope Tamiya never die.
Wow that looks exactly like the ones my brother and I used to race against each other. Looks much faster though and you are right about the suspension being way better. We used to get all the real cars out of the garage and spread baby powder on the smooth concrete floor and drift like mad. Good time and we used the hell out of them.
My first RC was the Hornet! I had tons of fun with it as expected but I also learned a lot from that Hornet. I still remember the distinct smell of the oil that came in the kit to put in the rear shocks. I did have a hobby shop in my town but it didn't carry RC stuff so I had to order replacement parts from Tower hobbies. The kids in my neighborhood seemed to gravitate towards Tamiya with lots of Grasshoppers, Hornets and Frogs. One kid had an RC10 and we were all jealous of that aluminum tub! I see they kept that classic Hornet under steer. It doesn't look quite right without the antenna straw though.

Those tie rod ends! I got mine in 1987 and still have it. Have been thinking about getting back into the hobby, but I think I'm going to try an entry-level short course truck this time. Great video, thanks so much!
I bought this ...... I'm 50 today and yes, it's been a long time. I wouldn't take it (not right away at least) I just bought a Wild One last month!!! I love Tamiya kits, always have, I also have a few Kyosho but Tamiya remains the 1st for me. You know, you should make a video of all the Tamiya kits you have, it would be great and we would remember the good times!
The tie-rod coming off is one of the things I remember about the Hornet during races in the 80's. I remember some of the drivers still running around the track with one of the wheels flopping around. Just didn't want to quit the race - LOL.
My first real rc. Local town had a rc club so I joined. We got funding to build a track and did it. Raced my Hornet for a year then a Boomerang. Learned a lot back then. Like hooking our Nicad’s directly to a 12 volt car battery and just timing the charge and feeling for the right temp. Baking sofa and crazy glue to reinforce frames lol.
It's a nice refresh for the Hornet, but back in the 80's, a "Hornet Evo" was callend "The Falcon" on Tamiya catalog (front oil dampers and rear independent suspension with oil dampers, and a M540 motor). Great Video!
It looks great and runs well! Whoever came up with the idea of bolting a DT02/DT03 gearbox to the Hornet tub chassis is a bloody genius. The DT03 understeers like made, but the DT02 tends to kick the back end out, unless you reverse the front lower wishbones. And adjustable turnbuckles as well as full bearings? Wow, well done Tamiya. I really like the look of the Hornet Evo, but it's still too expensive for what it is. Great video though!!
That brings back memories, back in the 80s me and my mates with all our Hornets. We modded the hell out our kits. Rather tempted getting this as I’ve not had a RC car since the early 90s think it would be fun.
I had an original one, saved up for it and used to love watching the videos in the model shop. A few years ago my eldest son got one, and oh boy did it bring back so many memories of fun times
Got my son a Hornet earlier this year, re-living my memories from the 80's.........Although new it wasn't the "EVO" release.....got to admit i'm impressed with the changes.....especially the battery cover....so many times when originally racing and more recently with my son....what a great addition...might look into making a similar piece to secure it. great up load thanks'
Oh! I can see immediately that it drives like a completely different car as soon as you drove the first 100 feet. Huge positive improvement in performance. I had a Hornets in 1990. Kept it for quite a few years.
Had the original Holiday Buggy, Frog and Hot Shot. Sold the all off last year. Me and my father started building a Tamiya Toyota Hilux but never finished it. We traded it off for a VCR. Would loved to have that car now.
This brought back a memory of a 12 year old me going to my friend's place to see if the batteries are charged up on his hornet so that we can go into the backalley and have just like you did 10 minutes of unadulterated fun and if we're lucky there was a second battery that worked and because I was the friend of the proprietor of the car itself the chance to grab that remote & take that car for a rip was just heaven for a 12-year old boy. Seeing you in action and listening to the sounds makes me want to perhaps look into picking one up because I do remember the good times that these RC cars brought.
Fantastic! This Hornet EVO is a gift to old school RC enthusiasts. My first RC was a Hornet and I loved that thing. I was just hoping for a re-release but what we got was so much better. Thanks for the review. I will have to get one of these.
This takes me back. Around 12 years old, building it in Germany. Now in Canada, still have it at my Dad's. Been meaning to put in a battery in it. I guess it was NiCd at the time, have to find something similar, but newer chemistry and a charger along with it.
You don’t realize your old(er) until you hear 40th anniversary. I bought mine through a Tamiya catalog when I was 15 in 1986. Saved my McDonalds paychecks. My next door neighbor to my right had a fox and my neighbor to my left had a Grasshopper. At one point I snapped one of the front shock towers, put some Goop on it, was better than new! The neighbor who had the grasshopper later got a RC10, so I had to step my game up and I got a Kyosho Ultima. Looking online seems like team associated has a 40yr RC 10 as well. Seeing this almost makes me want to fix up my RCs and get back in the game.
I had 2 of these. One bought in the mid 80's and the second, probably late 80's to early 90's. I had a black motor installed and race ball bearings all around, and boy that made a difference! Only thing is it didn't handle too well and bounced around like a rabbit off road. One time whilst bouncing through the grass and over a mound, upon landing, the whole gearbox popped out. The 2 pins that sat in the mount slots that allowed travel up and down for the gearbox, popped out on impact! Easy to pop back in. Heaps of times, my battery case cover would pop open and out came the NiMH battery! That was annoying. I would also use the old jumper style cables, red and black, connected to a car battery to charge up my batteries. Yup, the good ol rc days!
What I noticed is the poor people selling the vintage 80's gear online have all been shafted by this retro move. When I was a kid the OG Hornet was super expensive and good RC gear was megabucks to buy. It's all so cheap now.
I was just taking to someone about nostalgia in this hobby this morning and Boom the Hornet Evo is bang on the money! Man you got hold of one fast! Love this thing! You could put a spacer in the front shocks to bring it down a bit at the front but looks well put together! So pleased the battery door is better lol it was not cool dragging your battery around behind you back in the day. Ball bearing in the box too🍾🎉!!!!! Love that you get hex wheel adapters included! I will save those Super Grippers rear tyres for dirt/sand! Iol. Dude no bump steer and hopping back end but still has a fairly retro sound to it! Looks seriously good fun too just like the original was! Well done tamiya and you for showing us this classic that just got the refresh it deserves!
Arrrgh! 🤦♂️ I forgot to mention there is still a little bump steer. But not as bad. Still a great release from Tamiya mixing the best of old and new for us Tamiya fans.
Back when I was a kid, the Hornets did quite well at our local racing club in the "B class", because despite terrible handling, they always finished the race compared to the other Tamiya cars dropping or stripping driveshafts! Some of that bullet-proofness will be gone in this version- still want one though!
I would love to see a Marui Samurai, i used to deliver papers back in the 80s. One guy that i delivered to had one, then i was hooked on the hobby grade RC, the one i could afford was the Hornet
That was really cool. Tamiya, in a very un-Tamiya move, have done to the Hornet what many people who love the buggy have been trying to do themselves for decades. Mod it into a reasonably handling buggy. I designed and 3D printed something like this using TRF201 parts.

Wow this took me back. I didnt have one. I had something and my cousin had a frogger. But I remember somebody had one of these Hornets or we saw alot when we went to raceways. But the video with the tires, servos, differentials and all that took me back 40+ years like a time machine.
How cool!, My first RC car was the Grasshopper. But I didn't assamble that one myself, I was way too young for that so my dad bought it 2nd hand from someone who built it and painted it really nice with custom paintjob and I recieved it for christmas. Damn I loved it, It was so much better than all those toy RC cars my friends had. Fond memories. Later I got some other cars that I did built myself, maybe I will venture into RC again someday, it has been so long and I haven't had one since 14... I also lost all of it somehow :(
I almost got another Hornet to replace my childhood one. Think ima wait for this one to come out instead, cause it's infinitely better than the original!

My first hobby grade RC car, got it with a charger and battery with a sport tuned motor and Acoms radio for 60 bucks. It was where I learned about tuning motors and shocks, battery use and care and all that good stuff, I might get an Evo just for the nostalgia🤔
Ive got the original remake. You can really see how much smoother the Evo rides. The original is still fun but it bounces around everywhere. The battery door upgrade is welcome. I think most of us have seen the battery dragging along behind the car at some point.

I remember reading about it in the Littlewoods catalogue. It was like, £80 (Almost £200 in today's money). Yeah that wasn't on the cards.

The Tamiya Hornet was my first RC Car around 1985
I had an original one, saved up for it and used to love watching the videos in the model shop. A few years ago my eldest son got one, and oh boy did it bring back so many memories of fun times

I had modded mine with working headlights. Late 80's before white LED's existed so I used incandescents 😂
Got my son a Hornet earlier this year, re-living my memories from the 80's.........Although new it wasn't the "EVO" release.....got to admit i'm impressed with the changes.....especially the battery cover....so many times when originally racing and more recently with my son....what a great addition...might look into making a similar piece to secure it. great up load thanks'

Oh! I can see immediately that it drives like a completely different car as soon as you drove the first 100 feet. Huge positive improvement in performance.
I had a Hornets in 1990. Kept it for quite a few years.
Had the original Holiday Buggy, Frog and Hot Shot. Sold the all off last year. Me and my father started building a Tamiya Toyota Hilux but never finished it. We traded it off for a VCR. Would loved to have that car now.
Reminds me of my radioshack golden arrow buggy. I loved that thing.
This brought back a memory of a 12 year old me going to my friend's place to see if the batteries are charged up on his hornet so that we can go into the backalley and have just like you did 10 minutes of unadulterated fun and if we're lucky there was a second battery that worked and because I was the friend of the proprietor of the car itself the chance to grab that remote & take that car for a rip was just heaven for a 12-year old boy. Seeing you in action and listening to the sounds makes me want to perhaps look into picking one up because I do remember the good times that these RC cars brought.
The nice thing about this new Evo is parts for narrow DT-02 built! Holiday Buggy/Sand Scorcher Narrow Rear End here we go!

Fantastic! This Hornet EVO is a gift to old school RC enthusiasts. My first RC was a Hornet and I loved that thing. I was just hoping for a re-release but what we got was so much better. Thanks for the review. I will have to get one of these.
This takes me back. Around 12 years old, building it in Germany. Now in Canada, still have it at my Dad's. Been meaning to put in a battery in it. I guess it was NiCd at the time, have to find something similar, but newer chemistry and a charger along with it.
Had one in 1986. 14 year old and it was my xmas present . Main pain was the short battery duration , I imagine it’s better now !

You don’t realize your old(er) until you hear 40th anniversary. I bought mine through a Tamiya catalog when I was 15 in 1986. Saved my McDonalds paychecks. My next door neighbor to my right had a fox and my neighbor to my left had a Grasshopper. At one point I snapped one of the front shock towers, put some Goop on it, was better than new!
The neighbor who had the grasshopper later got a RC10, so I had to step my game up and I got a Kyosho Ultima.
Looking online seems like team associated has a 40yr RC 10 as well.
Seeing this almost makes me want to fix up my RCs and get back in the game.
I had a few Tamiya kits in the 80s. Blackfoot, Lunch Box, and a Grass Hopper. I may need to pick up a few for some fun with the kids
I had 2 of these. One bought in the mid 80's and the second, probably late 80's to early 90's. I had a black motor installed and race ball bearings all around, and boy that made a difference! Only thing is it didn't handle too well and bounced around like a rabbit off road. One time whilst bouncing through the grass and over a mound, upon landing, the whole gearbox popped out. The 2 pins that sat in the mount slots that allowed travel up and down for the gearbox, popped out on impact! Easy to pop back in. Heaps of times, my battery case cover would pop open and out came the NiMH battery! That was annoying. I would also use the old jumper style cables, red and black, connected to a car battery to charge up my batteries.

Was the Tyco bandit that got me into RC cars.
What I noticed is the poor people selling the vintage 80's gear online have all been shafted by this retro move. When I was a kid the OG Hornet was super expensive and good RC gear was megabucks to buy. It's all so cheap now.

You could put a spacer in the front shocks to bring it down a bit at the front but looks well put together! So pleased the battery door is better lol it was not cool dragging your battery around behind you back in the day. Ball bearing in the box too🍾🎉!!!!!

Dude no bump steer and hopping back end but still has a fairly retro sound to it! Looks seriously good fun too just like the original was! Well done tamiya and you for showing us this classic that just got the refresh it deserves!
Arrrgh! 🤦♂️ I forgot to mention there is still a little bump steer. But not as bad. Still a great release from Tamiya mixing the best of old and new for us Tamiya fans.

Back when I was a kid, the Hornets did quite well at our local racing club in the "B class", because despite terrible handling, they always finished the race compared to the other Tamiya cars dropping or stripping driveshafts! Some of that bullet-proofness will be gone in this version- still want one though!
I would love to see a Marui Samurai, i used to deliver papers back in the 80s. One guy that i delivered to had one, then i was hooked on the hobby grade RC, the one i could afford was the Hornet
My brother had a Fox and I had a Grasshopper. His Fox was absolutely badass!
That was really cool. Tamiya, in a very un-Tamiya move, have done to the Hornet what many people who love the buggy have been trying to do themselves for decades. Mod it into a reasonably handling buggy.

Very nice. I used to have a Tamiya Porsche 959. It was a ton of fun with the 4wd.
My dream much like Ralphie to a red rider bb gun is a remake of the Mauri Samurai. Had one 35 years ago and to this day is my favorite toy ever.
Great model, I like the upgrades, especially the bearings and independent rear suspension setup, it seems a lot more refined.

Wow this took me back. I didnt have one. I had something and my cousin had a frogger. But I remember somebody had one of these Hornets or we saw alot when we went to raceways. But the video with the tires, servos, differentials and all that took me back 40+ years like a time machine.

How cool!, My first RC car was the Grasshopper. But I didn't assamble that one myself, I was way too young for that so my dad bought it 2nd hand from someone who built it and painted it really nice with custom paintjob and I recieved it for christmas. Damn I loved it, It was so much better than all those toy RC cars my friends had. Fond memories. Later I got some other cars that I did built myself, maybe I will venture into RC again someday, it has been so long and I haven't had one since 14... I also lost all of it somehow :(
I almost got another Hornet to replace my childhood one.

My first hobby grade RC car, got it with a charger and battery with a sport tuned motor and Acoms radio for 60 bucks.
It was where I learned about tuning motors and shocks, battery use and care and all that good stuff, I might get an Evo just for the nostalgia🤔

Ive got the original remake. You can really see how much smoother the Evo rides. The original is still fun but it bounces around everywhere. The battery door upgrade is welcome. I think most of us have seen the battery dragging along behind the car at some point.
