These 2 cars are probably why the buggy is what you think of when someone says "RC car" ..Very cool adventure and beautiful view from that lookout! I bet that torque tuned motor is just fine with a small pinion.
Thanks so much mate, so true i think of the hornet as it was my first rc car, but looks i think has to go to the hotshot, just looks so aggressive and cool, the torque tuned motor in the grasshopper is like a sweet spot, its quick enough to have fun with, and keep the car under control for the most part, and not much slower than the hornet with a sport tuned, next will have to pin them up against each other to find out 😀👍
My first RC was the grasshopper and I loved it soooooo much fun.i had the same tyres as yours but I soon made them bold😂.it got bashed and put back together and bashed again.great little car
That's awesome mate most of us had a hopper as their first car, always left us with great memories , for me I couldn't let go of this hobby ever since, too much fun and excitement to turn my back on , and I've tried a few times 😀✌
Went thru a few Tyco RC cars before I got my 1st real RC car as a kid, a Tamiya Grasshopper for Christmas back in 1989. 1st upgrade was replacing the plastic wheel bearings to metal ones, along with saving the "sand paddle" tires for something more road ready. Next was replacing the plastic gears with alloy ones in the diff after I stripped em, replaced n upgraded the font bumper at that time too. After a year of owning it, the car was unrecognizable. From a unique F1 proto-type inspired body and Oil filled shocks to the oversized R/C airplane motor powering it.. The car grew with me. I seen that there were better cars at the time but my little Grasshopper could keep up with the best of em and one mistake was all it took for me to pass. I tried to re-live glory days, got a RC10 stadium truck a few years ago, its fun. Admittedly better than the grasshopper was in its prime. Still doesn't feel as good as that custom build as a kid..
Wow dude you really went all out on the grasshopper and the fact you could upgrade and modify these cars is what made this hobby even more exciting , I remember on my hornet we put the front springs on the back and stabiliser bars on the front to drop it to the ground, fox wheels with metal bearings and a trinity nuclear assault motor, went down the street like a rocket but melted the tamiya connector together to the esc cause it got so hot, will always remember that pass, thanks so much for commenting my man this was a trip down memory lane 😁👍✌
Awesome to see the Grasshopper in action. I could only afford the Falcon at the time, but I saved all my pennies until I could afford it (years of delivering flyers). I had hundreds of hours of fun with it, though I’m sure it took longer to earn the $ to buy it, than the time I spent enjoying it!
Alot of us would have a unique story on how they would of got their first car, I still remember the commercial on TV from Uncle Petes Toys here in Sydney, cheers mate thanks for commenting 😀👍
If you like the Tamiya Grasshopper you should get the candy green one before it sells out. I got my son one for Christmas. I got my other son Tamiya Grasshopper 2. We had fun building them.
Oh man, that brings back memories of the mid 80s! We used to take the springs from click-type ballpoint pens and put them on the front shocks to stiffen them up.
That's awesome man, it's amazing to hear all the different unique mods people used to do to these cars, springs from a ballpoint pen that is a first for me, brilliant 😄✌
That was a nice video, lovely story, the Grasshopper, of course! It was in my suggested feed from UA-cam, so I am happy I clicked the video and watched, I have subscribed to check more of your stuff you got coming! Yeah, I am actually thinking of getting me a Grasshopper, I had one in the 90'ies, bit of an odd story, I think I need to get me one again, it's a special buggy for sure!
Mate thanks so much I appreciate the support, I grew up with the hornet so these buggies will always have a special place, just a fun car to drive that leaves you with a smile, for the price of these now you can't go wrong 😀 👍
@@rcbloka Yeah, I just ordered one, was about a half hour late to get it shipped out today, ha ha, but better late than never, eh? Got a week of crappy weather looming over me, so it'll be nice with a quick casual build, I already got something fun in mind...
Yeah I think building the kit you get to know the car inside out and also learn all the other aspects of rc, painting , soldering etc, the more involved the more attached you get, but then comes the fun of upgrades and tuning for performance 😉 👍
If I remember correctly I got the Grasshopper II at Christmas in 1994. Just stumbled over another video and asked my dad if he could look for it in my parents attic. This brings back so many good memories. I will get 40 years in September and can’t wait to check if my beloved Grasshopper still got it ❤😅
Mate that is awesome I hope you find it, something about these cars that just seem to capture the nostalgia and the memories that will never dissapear, leaves with no regrets for owning one 🙂
The 540 tourqe tune or the 380 sport tune is really good for these cars. The 380 sport tune is nice because of how light the motor is and makes handling a bit better.
Thanks so much mate , cheers for the insight , never thought trying a 380 just to see I always stuck with the 540 motors.....might get my hands on one sometime just to try.....😁👍
I had the grasshopper with the original slow motor. Then got a 540 and it flew! I destroyed the body after a few weeks and put a different shell on. I later got the Frog which was also pretty nice.
When I painted up my hopper I used the white Tamiya primer and painted it up with TS-7 Racing White, came out looking great. Gives it a vintage look compared to the standard white.
Cheers mate thanks for the comment, that racing white would be abit darker than the standard white , definitely would look great on the grasshopper, vintage look and feel for a vintage car 😁✌
What a fantastic review, love the enthusiasm! The colour came out superb. I wonder how it would have done with the original tires? I've heard they're a bit hard/shiny on anything but sand so probably a good choice to go spikey...
Thanks so much mate, paddle tyres would be good on sand but anything else the spikey would have the advantage , this car will get pinned up against the hornet in a future vid so I wanted to build it in a way that it would be able to keep up and mabey win against it, I think now it has what it takes, will have to wait and see, thanks again for commenting I appreciate it 😀 👍
What a awesome car to have as a first, love the aggressive styling on the Boomerang and the Hotshot, I have one on the shelf and am looking forward to that build 😀👍
Im off to Japan in 3 weeks for work. At Super Rajikon they have the green Grasshopper for 6500 yen a bargain. My tourque tune and esc from the TT02 wil go to brushless hitec 50th 10.5T motor.
Wow that's awesome man, enjoy japan and definitely pick up a few things from there the prices are too good to miss, heared the food there is also next level 😁✌
@rcbloka Japan is amazing place, as an Aussie expat I live in Malaysia and travel all over South East Asia. Korea also has some great shops and I'm dlways on the hunt when I'm away.
@rcbloka I moved from Adelaide 10yrs ago spent 4yrs in Singapore 4yrs in the Philippines and 2.5yrs in Malaysia and seen all of Asia. I'm just lucky it's all paid for by work. You should get over and have a look go to Japan and stop in Thailand you will love it and get some bargains.
Thanks buddy, yes the original sand tyres will go back on at some point, this build was to be similar to the hornet so we can race them together and not let one car have an advantage over the other, except motor in this case, should be a close race 😀 👍
I had a Grasshopper when it first came out.. I destroyed it.. Must have binned it.. I broke it bad. I must prefer the knobby tyres than the smooth ones. It never got traction.
I think the paddle tyres it comes with should be good on the sand but upgrading to the hornets tyres makes it good on most surfaces, thanks for commenting 😁👍
That's awesome mate, I wish I still had my cars from back in the day, I only have the parts now from the hornet and the kyosho ultima and optima mid that I used to race 😀👍
@@tazanteflight8670 I must admit I really do like the looks of the grasshopper, and the more I look at it the more I appreciate it's lines....from every angle.....✌
I got my first Grasshopper in 1985. Just built my second 2 weeks ago. Love the nostalgia. Thanx for the vid!!!
Thanks so much mate, the memories from the 80s just never get old, re living them now is just as much fun 😁✌
me too, right around that time. Great car.
Proper trip into childhood. Thanks for making this.
Thank you mate, had tons of fun making this and for most of us these cars will have that special place 😃👍
Hopper head to heads always good. Its just kaos. I love the pearl white
Cheers m8 thanks heaps, scratched the paint a little but was worth the fun, definitely a future hopper head to head is on the cards 😃👍
