When I was 16 I remember listening to Spyro Gyra in my bedroom and being inspired as I learned to play the sax. Fast forward 43 years later…I now play bass and sax. Still being inspired by these wonderful artists. Thanks Spyro Gyra!
In the late 70's -80's Spyro Gyra and Morning Dance particularly protected me from myself and unknown trouble. It was my go to salvation when life wasn't understood. Playing it over and over in my bedroom. Tearing while writing this because the band saved my life and maybe someone else'. Gratitude for your presence then and lifelong success. I'm 67 now.
Jay Beckenstein is the PERFECT Smooth Jazz sax player - never overplays, always plays exactly what's needed and nothing more. Never self-indulgent. His ego never seems to enter his playing. Pure and smooth. Such a sensible and correct musician. Same with Tom Schuman. Plays exactly what's needed, and nothing more. Mature players.
My father took me to see them as a kid, I wanna say in the late 70’s or early 80’s. At the time I wanted to go play football in the street outside. Over the years I never forgot that name Spyro Gyra. So when we started digging in my pops crates for samples I knew that name would have sample gems for days. I bought a bass and use to play along. I love the many moods the songs took you thru. In my head their songs reminded me of being outside in different times of the day. And at different places. My pops was a musician/ composer/ director, so I was exposed to many different types of music. I’m a WESTCOAST B-boy from the Chi. Seen a lot of the legends over the years. But till remember many of these songs at 52 yrs old.
Would like to thank the Audio Engineer and the team on a such a beautiful recording. It sounds like it is recorded in a studio. Everything is so, so, so well balanced and it alsi speaks a lot about the preparation gone into band rehersals. Smooth😊
You just took the words out my mouth or shall I say my fingers to type this. Very true, the audio is so clean. And the Spyro Gyro band is musically tight as always.
In 1982 Spyro Gyra was the guest band at the renowned Elmhurst Jazz Festival and as band soloists in the competition we had the chance to jam with them the morning before the competition. What an amazing experience as an 18 yr old trumpet player. We had the competition during the day and they performed the concert at night at the beautiful Scottish Rite Auditorium. Before their performance they announced the competition awards and fortunately I won the trumpet soloist award. What a life highlight that I will never forget. Thank you SG for so many years of amazing music!

The quality of this (sound + video) recording confirms what I've been thinking for decades : technicians actually are artists doing their craft with machines. For a such a band, it takes a huge talent to make the final piece sound and look soooooo damn perfect !
Yes of course, there are many talented Specialists behind a Video like this. The Sound is amazing and you can feel the work of the Soundartists. The musicians are on top, this is "High Performance" at its best.......and don't forget the Videofolks ;))
Todavía me veo caminar por las calles de mi ciudad escuchando a esta excelente banda en mi bella adolescencia salvándome del oscio y sin saberlo construyendo un destino del cual todavía no me arrepiento. Almost 5 decades since they started out. I've been following them '77-78 when my brother came home with their first record. Seen them a handful of times over the years. Tom joined the band in' 77. They have consistently put out fresh compositions and had top quality musicians. They still have fun together. It's refreshing.
Over the years I have seen these guys at least 30 times and they never ever disappoint. Have all their recordings. Tight as hell. Very uplifting stuff.
I used to see you guys in Orlando Florida Fl. back in I believe in the 80"s as much as I could. Now we are living in Bogota Colombia and I still put on the old C.D's that I still have of the older band . I have some pictures and autograph of the band way back then, man it was great and now looking at the band you guys have gotten better and always with a warm touch that I feel in my heart. Thanks for the beautiful memories and music which I will never forget and for your CD's. Never stop playing your music.
I got to watch these guys live last year in Rochester New York and I’m still smiling from the experience 😎 ! Big fan ! They’re all phenomenal in their own right..
WOW! What a Beautiful Sound and Video Fantastic playing and Sound Engineering and Amazing Video Camera work and Directing and Lighting! High End Production!
I was about 15 when I accidentally bought a used copy of Catching the Sun in 1982. I had never heard anything like it in my small town. That was my first exposure to jazz and it didn't click with my friends who worshipped Van Halen and ZZ Top. But I fell in love with jazz and have been a fan ever since, thanks to that accidental album purchase. They sound even better now than back then.
Awesome recording of awesome music! Wonderful energy and it feels as good today as it did decades ago when I really needed it the most. Thanks to all for this gift you all gave to the world.
Jazz speaks to the low and high emotions in its movement and its narrative gives space to each part of the story teller and to the harmony of the whole. I love these Guys for their endurance. Experts at Four Play Act

Toujours aussi épatant 😢❤❤❤ De mon enfance début des années 90 mon tympan apprivoisé leur son et maintenant je m'en passe sans cesse de les écouter, c'est le remède. La thérapie idéale 😊
We missed these guys in 2022 in Phoenix at the MIM because of a traffic jam that closed I-10 from the south. This is most likely the playlist that we didn't get to see live. These guys are dynamite in person... thank you for posting this one!!! Cheers...

Spyro are still in good sound, groove along with Rippingtons! Saw them once live in late 90s. Greetings from Jazzman KUL.
Great 'conversations' between instruments. Musicians at the top of their game. Plus, outstanding audio and camera work!!!!
I was into them in my college days (late 70's). Glad they're still playing. Kudos to the recording engineer(s) - Sounds great!
