V4E19: Forgotten Roads to Windy Coves

  • This week, I venture to the southern tip of Nevada, where I traverse some washed out roads, and enjoy a charming campground by the water's edge. Unrelenting winds cause me to push eastward into Arizona, where I experience the burros of Oatman, and take in the attractions of Kingman, along historic Route 66.

I have a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon here in the UK and the only way I could justify owning such a vehicle is to use it for adventures. Our fuel prices are also over double what you pay in the USA!

Something of a coincidence....I live in Kalispell, MT and before I found your channel, and subsequently binge watched your episodes chronologically over a couple weeks and became somewhat of a fan, I went up the north fork past Polebridge and camped at Tuchuk CG as I do from time to time, unknowingly just after you had been there in the snow....exact camp site and even used the rocks you had used to level your jeep, to level my Tacoma with RTT. I cracked up after watching that episode and had to tell my wife. I love what your doing and am considering this way of life after the little birdies fly away! Let me know if you're in the area and want some company around the fire....we have a lot in common! Peace.

I’m upset this video is over already. I live a dream thru your videos each week wishing I could do the same travels and be free. I love my wife and baby girl, but right now things are tough. Keep living a dream for all of us. Hope your trip home recharges your batteries. Enjoy the family, most of ours is gone. Holidays are tough, no parents or grandparents to enjoy anymore. My grandpa was the best! Have a great week!

Chris it’s to bad that wind didn’t cooperate, I’m not a big fan of strong winds either as they’re tiring...
Thanks for the mention of the apps, I downloaded them both. My wife and I are in the beginning stages of planing for a life on the road, tired of living in one place reading about all the adventures to be experienced. We’re planing on a medium sized motor home with a Jeep tied on behind. Keep up the great work it’s really appreciated.

Chris thank you so much for the videos. You take us to places some of us never go or have the chance to go; you do a great job of showing how to traverse some really technical roads. I can tell in your videos you seem to be getting discouraged and lonely. It's always good when you have a friend or your son along for some of these trips. I think it does you a lot of good to have a companion. Have you ever considered having a dog? Maybe it will do you a lot of good to go home for the holidays and recharge. Keep up the great work. I am from south Georgia and have never been to the places you take us to. So thank you for sharing your journey with us.

I also love his channel, adventures and the amazing scenery. I too have a Jeep Rubicon (not very common in the UK) and am inspired to go overlanding in the Highlands of Scotland - though I'll likely stay in cosy B&Bs or a warm pub (so I guess it would be called "over-glamping"!).

Just wanted to say how much i enjoy your Adventure videos. I work a lot and have so many commitments that i do not get much time off. I would have to say yes i live my life vicariously through these videos. i look forward to seeing America through your videos. I also dream if one day being able to travel in the same way you do. Your videos have opened my eyes to how amazing America is. I live in the Phoenix Area and i am amazed at how spectacular Arizona is. Thank you for your selflessness in sharing your Adventure. You have the same spirit that the original settlers had acting in faith that all will go well. I just got a 2007 FJ cruiser, and im very interested in the way you have set up your jeep and im do very much enjoy your reviews on the bits and bobs you pick up here and there. Im making sure to attend the expo in flag 2019 . Maybe we will see you there.. All the Best Chris and safe travels.

As always a great video. Besides the fact that you don't have crazy background music which we have discussed before, I love that when you are driving off road you take it slow and methodical. I am not a fan of the sites that show vehicles plowing through the woods tearing it up and their machines up. I have the same cook pans and now only use them for my small back pack stove. They are too thin for the heat on the bigger stoves and usually burn everything unless they get constantly watched. Safe travels!

Fantastic...you are in my neck of the woods..Although I am Canadian, I spend my winters in the same area. Base out of Needles, Ca. and go to Loughlin, Nevada, Christmas tree pass, Kingman, AZ, Oatman, Haulapie mountain, Lake Havasu Az, and the Parker areas. The hikes and boon docking are amazing with Cup Cake Mountain, Parker as a great climb, all beautiful. However, like you, I discovered the wind....Be down there end of December. Oh, the campground you were in on the Colorado is on my list this winter. Surprised you didn't make it down to Nelson...just south of Boulder city, off the 95..quaint ghost town, and goes right on down to the Colorado also. A truly gorgeous part of the world, but, the wind does make you kinda nuts.

I used to live out there, nice to see Kingman in better shape (*everything* was out of business and boarded up when we left). Looks like your last camp was up on the north end of the Hualapais? There's a great scenic route that runs south along the top of the rim and drops out into the desert just southeast of Yucca...and from there you've got BLM dirt in just about every direction.

I'm always wondering, your jeep is your house/life . When you park it in town or leave it some in place alone for hours, aren't you afraid of your jeep getting robed?
This is my biggest fear, and most of the times I can't even go enjoying long walks because of the fear of having my vehicle broken in, witch already happened once!

Really appreciate sharing your adventure. You should think about self recovery. I like remote back roads, and I too am most often by myself. On your Jeep, I do not see a winch, high lift jack, or shovel (the machete was kind of lame). You should have these to be truly self supporting, and you could well be helpful to others who are less prepared. Good choice to take a break and especially to spend time with your son.

Chris's diet really cracks-me-up, with all those fried sandwiches, SPAM (urggh!), cheese and pizza he scoffs down, but he still looks pretty trim on it, as I guess burning a lot of calories with being cold, setting-up camp, hiking and otherwise roughing-it. I'd say living the dream, although I have adventures in my Jeep Rubicon, I prefer a cosy Bed and Breakfast with a warm shower!
