  • After a very excited wait, I have been listening to the first of the brand new Analogue Productions Atlantic 75 series Selling England By The Pound. This absolutely superb new Chris Bellman all-analogue cut is presented on 2x45rpm LPs pressed at the world's number one (in my opinion) pressing plant: QRP.
    Selling England By The Pound was one of the very first albums I bought, around 44 years ago. How good is this new cut? I compare the new Analogue Productions release to my 1973 UK original and 70s Japanese pressings.
    I purchased my copy direct from Acoustic Sounds at: store.acousticsounds.com/d/17...

    Hello Dave: Much enjoyed this and an excellent presentation.
    As an adjoiner, when I were a lad, I was a trainee manager for British Transport Hotels and working in London Victoria, where one of my senior managers was this terribly posh ex-public schoolboy. But, he had two things going for him. 1. He was a massive Genesis fan just like myself - and we both went to see the band live at Dury Lane in 1980. 2. He had a hobby of learning all the parlance of east end London slang and he explained the following to me. So, I took the opportunity to jot down some notes in 1979 of his findings ref 'The Battle Of Epping Forest', which has always been very much a favourite track of mine and that page of notes has sat slipped inside my copy of SEBTP for all these years since. Here are some observations:
    1. The "Reverend" is east London slang for a homosexual.
    2. The "Church" is slang for a brothel.
    3. The furniture he's looking for is a bed.
    4. The Lady "who showed me her best" is a prostitute, but he shuns her and closes his eyes because he's gay.
    5. Bob the Knob is her gangster pimp.
    6. The Lady confirms to Bob, that the Reverend "is hard to please" - because he's gay. Bob asks the Reverend if he'd be interested in our "Staffordshire Plate", which is an old-school queer code name, a nom de plume for a blow job.
    7. The Reverend at first isn't too sure, but the "Devil" caught hold of his soul and a voice called out "Shoot!", meaning he went for it!
    Now, just what this sideline sub-story is doing within all the other action is anyone's guess, but it's certainly a humorous interpolation that flies over the heads of most Genesis fans.
    Cheers.

      Thanks for this: it certainly adds more ‘detail’ to the story… 😂

    This is an album that was crying out for the 45RPM treatment due to it's length and I agree with you in that it is simply stunning. Since buying this on it's UK release date it has remained my favourite Genesis album. I'm a little older than you as I was introduced to the band by the release of the mid price "Genesis Live" in early 1973 which prompted me to immediately go out and buy both Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme. My UK first pressing of Selling England was played so much that I had to replace it with a 1975 repress. This new AP 75th Anniversary issue smashes both of those out of the park so I cannot wait to hear what they have done with the two earlier albums once they are issued.

      Cool. Often I’ve wished I was a few years older, so I could’ve been around (buying records, going to concerts) at this time.
      Thanks for sharing your story.

    I didnt bother with this one, well sort of anyway. I got the clear vinyl Atlantic 75 version which was much cheaper... But i have pre ordered the 45rpm trick of a tail.

    This record has special memories for me. I was introduced to it in the early 1970s by a work colleague who played it during a visit to his flat in east Oxford one Saturday morning (along with Crisis? What Crisis? by Supertramp). I then went out and bought an early pressing, mastered by Pecko, which is still regularly played all these years later. Have just ordered this 45rpm version.

    Excellent review! This album has been a constant companion for me since 1976. This new edition is just fantastic and brings back wonderful memories of being 16 and investigating and exploring new sounds and sites that would have a lasting influence on your life. Not quite an audiophile review on my end, but it will have to do!!!

    Selling England and The Lamb are two of my favorite albums - my first was SEBTP as a 13 year old in 73
    I have original UK and Japanese which are very nice, the Classic Records 33 1/3 doesn’t have as much energy - more bass but it isn’t fully controlled and the ATL 75 45 rpm of both lps versions are incredible - so engaging - these albums were never known for their sound recording - no more - there is such breath, spaciousness and tone

      The clarity once again stood out to me. And the big bang of sound in "Fly On A Windshield" is worth the purchase alone in my opinion, simply overwhelmingly stunning. And the packaging is something special for sure! I ordered the Alice Cooper, so thats what I will be listening to next ;)@@DaveDenyer

    Analouge production records are warp. Purchase 3 albums - all of them were warped.
    Very disappointed from them.

    • @DaveDenyer
      @DaveDenyer  5 місяців тому

      I’ve only had one warped disc that was pressed at QRP.
      Sadly I’ve had a high proportion of warped discs pressed elsewhere.

    • @JumbleTasteSpinning
      @JumbleTasteSpinning 5 місяців тому

      @@DaveDenyer well, i think that any new records that you purchase should be 100% flat. no less.
      Not gonna buy from analouge productions again that's for sure, and i recommend everybody to check that issue before they purchase from them.

    • @DaveDenyer
      @DaveDenyer  5 місяців тому

      @@JumbleTasteSpinning that's your choice, obviously, although I really do feel you've just had bad luck. I've only had one warped disc that was pressed at QRP (and Acoustic Sounds replaced the disc without question). I have had many more warped discs from just about every other pressing plant. The worst offender, from my personal experience, is actually RTI.
