    Can get the LPCC with an additional 3 courses. So, I figured why not.

    Scope of work for LCSW in California is clinical therapy primarily, it can also include group therapy, and lastly, at least in the county of Riverside California, can include all different kinds of case management, linkage, facilitation, coordination, and information dissemination.

    I was following you for a while in the discussion but you are wring sir. Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) focuses on psychosocial theory carl max versus License Professional Counselor (LPC) and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) focuses on all forms of psychological theory unless specialized i.e Freudian, Erickson, Piget. Everyone of these professionals performs some type of linking and referring for their clients; however, LCSWs are able to recieve higher reimbursements from Medicare. The only counselor who trumps them all is the psychologist because they can perform statistical assessments for sever mental ill clients including the VA.

      Thank you, for the additional information. While you added to what I said, I wouldn't say I was wrong. I think you expounded on what I was saying. I didn't mention any of the actual theories used but, I just wanted to really clarify that social work does have more of a psychological focus vs LPC and LMFT. But I also did mention that LPCs do linking as well, just not as much as social workers, because social workers tend to work in hospitals and schools more than an LPCs and LMFTs. Thank you adding to the discussion. What do you do Mr. Wallace?

I honestly would not only because it is extra time and money. BUT, if you think it will be worth your while and fruitful for your career, I'd say go for it.

      It think it sucks that LPC’s are still not allowed to bill Medicare and also we are limited in management etc type jobs. I work where I’m fully clinically licensed but I can not be the director if I wanted because they only hire LCSW’s in that position although we have equal licenses. Also, when I was a PLPC they would not hire me until I was a LPC but they hired the equivalent license of LMSW. It’s very frustrating.

      @Joelschoolpsy  6 років тому +3

      Hi Evie. Thank you for your question. LCSWs and LMFT do a lot of the same things as well. The biggest difference is the coursework. Both of these fields require about the same amount of post-masters level supervised hours...typically 3000-3500.
      I will say that, LCSWs are hired more than LMFTs and LPCs. I see organizations asking for LCSWs ALL the time; hospitals, clinics, non-profit organizations, state agencies, etc. While LPCs and LMFTs are also hired at these places, LCSWs are more frequently hired pretty much everywhere. Especially if you want to work with veterans. The pay is around the same, but it seems that LCSWs are in more demand.

    Hello! I wanted to firstly thank you so much for this video. Not only was the video helpful but also all the comments that added to it. I currently have been working as a case manager for almost 1.5 years after graduating with my bachelors in Public Health. I personally envision myself working in a hospital setting (ER) and / or opening up my own practice/ non profit and hiring multiple clinicians to run the practice with me. I’m very confused in which direction I should go in to further my education. I also do love the public health sector and have considered getting my MPH. A woman that’s in a PsyD program right now recommended that getting a PsyD would be better for me financial wise (more money). However, I noticed that it is quite a long journey to get a PsyD. I wanted someone opinion on this matter. Which direction should I head in for graduate school? If I did a dual masters (MSW/MPH) would this be sufficient in possibly opening up my own practice one day?

    • @Joelschoolpsy
      @Joelschoolpsy  4 роки тому

      Hi Zain, thank you for watching and thank you leaving a comment and sharing. I'm glad this video was helpful. There are many ways that you can get to private practice and since you like public health as well, I do think social work and (or) psychology are more aligned with that. Many social workers and psychologists work in clinic or hospital settings and work with a team for integrated health care. There may be a social worker, psychologist, physician, and other professionals working together to provide a myriad of services. Becoming a licensed clinical social worker will take about 3 years of coursework, practicum and internship, and then about an additional 2 years to get full licensure. Psychology degrees, as you know, take about 5 years and then an additional 2 or so to get full licensure. Depending on what you'd like to specialize in, behavior analysis could be something that you may like. There are also genetic counselors, although I am not sure how many jobs are available for genetic counselors. Since you have case management experience, that is good so if you decide to get you MPH then perhaps you can get a job that will help you do more of want you'd like. I'd be happy to talk it over more with you. My email is joel@allthesespecialties.org

    Thank you for the helpful information. I am going to be applying to a Clinical Psych. MS program soon that prepares its students to become LPC (LPCC here in CA) or MFT - since it's a clinical psych. program, I suspect the training will be more psychological in nature? Also, I eventually want to go into group/private practice as a psychotherapist helping individuals with things like anxiety/stress/depression etc - would getting an LPC be a good route for me to take?? I'm not very interested in the resource-providing emphasis of social work

      Hello. Thank you for watching the video. I am glad that you are furthering your education. And I think that you are taking the right path in pursuing your LPC/LPCC. It is also great that you are getting a masters in clinical psych just in case you decide to get into a PhD program in clinical psych to become a licensed psychologist. LPCs/LPCCs have the ability to do a lot of things in terms of therapy and you'll definitely be able to provide quality therapy from many different theories. Individuals definitely seek out LPCs over social workers for counseling in private practice settings because many people don't understand that LCSWs counsel as well. Great choice and I wish you well in getting your masters degree and LPCC. Please let me know if you have any more questions.

    Hi, thank you so much for your video! I was wondering if you know the specific extent of diagnostic abilities of a LPC, LMFT or LCSW- I've been very confused because several state boards allow all those professionals to diagnose cognitive, affective and behavioral disorders, but I've also been reading that only psychologists can administer psychological tests. I'm confused because it seems that a LPC, LMFT or LCSW can diagnose anything a psychologist can, which must include assessments, but only psychologists can administer psychological tests? I've been trying so hard to find a clear distinction of what can and cannot be diagnosed and treated by a LPC or LMFT or LCSW but have had no success! If you could respond I would be extremely grateful, I've looked online for information for more than probably 30 hours in total and have found nothing that's really clear.

      Carla, Please check out this link for more information: Section E discusses assessments and diagnosing in detail;
      www.counseling.org/resources/aca-code-of-ethics.pdf

    • @Joelschoolpsy
      @Joelschoolpsy  5 років тому +2

      Hi Carla! Thank you for your comment. LPCs, LCSWs and LMFTs can definitely diagnose and provide testing/assessment. What the code of ethics for LPCs (American Counseling Association Code of Ethic 2014) states is in section E.2. Competence to Use and Interpret Assessment Instruments
      "Counselors use only those testing and assessment services for which they have been trained and are competent. Counselors using technology-assisted test interpretations are trained in the construct being measured and the specific instrument being used prior to using its technology based application. Counselors take reasonable measures to ensure the proper use of assessment techniques by persons under their supervision."
      So, it really comes down to what you, as a counselor are trained to do. There are MANY types of tests/assessments that can be conducted. Counselors just have to make sure they are competent/trained to conduct such tests/assessments. Now, there are certain tests that are, I'm sure, out of the scope of practice for LPCs, LMFTs, and LCSWs; test that probably can only be administered by a licensed psychologist.
