    It would be interesting to hear about times when this has gone badly. I had a particular therapist who was awful with this kind of thing. She gave no explanation for her silence and sat right in front of me, straight on.

    Hi Joel! I know I’m so many years late on this. But with a background in mental health counseling, how would I make myself more competitive for a PhD program in school psychology? It may seem like a strange transition to some

      Hi Gabriella. Thank you for reaching out. Interesting enough. I finished a masters in clinical mental health counseling, before my PhD in educational psychology degree. It's definitely a good foundation to have for a school psychology doctoral degree. It really all depends on if the program sees value in the clinical mental health counseling degree and if there are any prerequisites needed. If there are prerequisites required, I'd complete those, but I'd also reach out to faculty at the programs you are interested in and let them know you're interested and would like to meet to discuss your plans. Clinical mental health counseling degrees give a good foundation in counseling theory and techniques that I feel very much compliment the role of school psychology.

    When the economy is affected crime rises, divorces increase, drug and alcohol abuse skyrockets, people committing S…. Increases, financial problems bring on internal struggle, homelessness, unemployment, and being unable to pay bills. This is all a fact. There are a number of studies that prove this. If you somehow believe…. That any of those situations I just mentioned don’t play a vital role in a persons mental health??? I don’t know what to tell you. I am a licensed clinician… I have my Masters Degree from a top 20 university in the entire country. I see patients every single day that have formed personality disorders, struggle with mood disorders, anxiety, depression… some of these cases are from childhood while some are from hardships people go though in their lives. Personality disorders are learned behaviors. The mental health of this country… collectively.. is not good. I hear your message but what is your point? What do you believe is causing the drug addiction? The homelessness problem? Why are divorce court rooms packed everyday? Why are record numbers of families collecting government assistance and can’t afford to pay their bills? In your ideology all these things would not cause anxiety disorders. They wouldn’t cause depression. They wouldn’t create bi-polar disorder and enter into mixed states of cycling between mania and depression. The “S” word…. Why is that so high? If it’s not mental health… what is it?

    • @Joelschoolpsy

      So while all that you mentioned can, indeed cause someone to develop a mental health disorder....there is a difference between having a mental health condition and experiencing grief, stress, psychological distress, emotional distress, etc. Not everything is a condition. You have to ask yourself, if I remove the major things in my life (not saying it is easy to remove) that cause major dysfunction would I still feel symptoms of anxiety, depression, etc. You cannot look at everything as a disorder/condition or otherwise pathologize everything one may go through. Stress, grief, distress....whatever you want to call it, is a normal part of life. While it can develop into a condition, those things in themselves are not mental health conditions. You can get therapy and medication to try to fix things, but if you don't address the etiology (relationship issues, substance/alcohol use, financial challenges, etc.) then the medication and therapy won't work. It's like having a skincare routine, but not using sunscreen. So again, while all the things that you mentioned can lead to a condition, they are not in themselves conditions. You can also think about it this way....just because someone drinks heavily, does not necessarily mean they are an alcoholic. While someone can develop alcohol use disorder, drinking excessively does not necessarily constitute a disorder. Different social-ecological factors need to be considered. While drinking in excess can be unhealthy, you cannot just diagnose someone without having their full story. Mental health conditions are real, but not everything is as a result of a condition. This is why there is diagnostic criteria. But there are also ways to help relieve life challenges, be it spiritual, financial counseling, change of work environment, changes in social circle, changes in what content you take in, diet, exercise, sleep hygiene, etc.

      @@Joelschoolpsy okay… so while I do agree with you in certain aspects we still need to address abnormal behavior and neurological disorders, that are often passed down through genetics and while genetics play a part this disorder doesn’t present throughout childhood and/or early adulthood. This neurological disorder can, and usually is, brought on by a significant life event. Such as… a bad divorce, a near death experience, a sexual assault, ect… from this event a patient can begin to develop symptoms of the disorder they’ve essentially carried their whole life. A personality disorder is completely different right? This is usually a learned behavior that happens over a period of time… patients usually wait years and years before seeking help and it is why some of these disorders are so difficult to treat. Some patients don’t even know they are in fact sick or acting in a fashion (usually a family member or close friend would pick up on this before the individual. I guess I just don’t see where you are going with this (respectfully). While myself I am a big advocate for healthier life choice, a cleaner way of living and more CBT. My stance is always less pharmaceutical HOWEVER…. We both know that medicine has come a long way and with specific disorders it’s 100% needed to help the patient manage the symptoms he/she is experiencing. With all that said the DSM-5 is here for a reason. This is hundreds of years of work put into understanding symptoms, diagnostic criteria, treatment plans, ect. I mean if your stance is that we shouldn’t label things or we do it too often… my question to you would be so what do we do with it? A married 45 year old, father of 3, working 2 jobs, has a mortgage, bills, and losses one of his jobs and he comes into the office with his with saying he’s having full blown panic attacks at random times…. In the grocery store, before bed, driving home from work, ect….. so is this that not a case of Panic Disorder? If it’s not classified or “labeled” (as you say) how do we treat it? Now if the conversation is clinically doctors are in the pocket of the pharmaceutical industry and writing too many prescriptions… that I will agree with. We, the United States, are the most medicated country in the world. However, In an industry that I am presently in… an industry where we have massive shortages of qualified clinicians combined with an enormous demand for mental health treatment… I can’t see how we are over diagnosing people. Labeling in the context of sociology, culture, gender, or sexual preference… is a bad thing. Labeling itself needs to go away and as a society I hope we get to that point someday. However, I can’t stand behind less labeling when it comes to a persons mental health. If the clinician is doing their job correctly they are meeting with patients many times, watching and paying attention to body language and understanding more than the words coming from an individuals mouth all before a possible diagnoses could be considered. You use excessive drinking of alcohol as an example and although it’s a good analogy I believe you’re failing to look beyond the drinking. Why are they drinking excessively? Is it recreational? Possibly… if they are younger. Is the drinking excessively being used to numb something? A childhood experience, a trauma, a present problem they have in their life. So while that individual shouldn’t be labeled an alcoholic…. Could the “label” be PTSD or CPTSD? It would still be a label. It would still represent and present symptomatically. If the conversation is we are too fast to diagnose and label disorders I could get behind this. But I don’t believe that’s what you are saying, if I am hearing you correctly of course. In my world the only way to formulate a treatment plan is to have a diagnosis. The diagnosis that you suggest isn’t always needed. I guess I would ask you if you believe in less labeling how do we fix the mental health crisis that the United States is facing right now. We are in a crisis that’s a certainty. Millions of Americans are depressed, self isolating, withdrawing, turning to drugs and alcohol, experiencing social anxiety along with generalized anxiety, relationships and marriages are ending at numbers this country has never seen before, internet addiction is through the roof… without sounding like a broken record, yes some of them are not direct disorders (depression, anxiety, addiction excluded) if they aren’t being caused by something (a label) then why are they happening?

    • @Joelschoolpsy
      @Joelschoolpsy 2 місяці тому

      @micdropfroggyface6466 So, some good points you made... the crux of dealing with a problem may or may not be tied to a label. You used an example of the father who is having panic attacks....well, look at all of the things that you mentioned he is going through.... The father has 3 kids, a mortgage, and he lost a job....he is now having panic attacks....so you really answered your own questions.... you can certainly diagnose him with generalized anxiety disorder, but is that going to help him, or is providing him financial resources, daycare support, and help finding another job or just one job that would allow him to have financial stability for himself and his 3 kids? He's having panic attacks because of the social-ecological issues that he is having....if indeed you fix those issues, the panic attacks would likely go away. If you were to fix all of those issues and he continued to have panic attacks, in spite of his situation being better, then that's when we start looking at diagnosis. His situation is that of stress, not necessarily a disorder. Not until we fix those issues to see if that is the root cause of the panic attacks. Addressing neurological conditions... we have to be clear on what those are. If we are talking about traumatic brain injuries, that's one thing....if we are talking about ADHD and autism, those are neurodevelopmental. While there is a neurological component to several mental health disorders (these being diagnosable conditions), then sure thing! Absolutely recognize that the individual has a diagnosable condition. However, neurological issues are not typically caused by stressful life events. There is a difference between a neurological disorder and a mental health disorder... we have to be clear on what we are referring to here. Working in mental health can be tricky, because people come to you with a set of symptoms, but when we know the root causes of the problem and yet instead of providing resources, we simply diagnose and then provide medication and counseling, we are still not dealing with the issue. We do not want to be so quick to label....that's the point. We do not want to over-diagnose either, because then we lose out on resiliency. Please don't look at this as a black and white issue where I'm saying....stop diagnosing. These labels are not real.... I'm saying let's not be so quick to label and continue to recognize what life stress and grief are and how those things manifest in our behavior. Some people manage both stress and grief differently. Some individuals have fantastic coping mechanisms, and some people do not. As you mentioned about the drinking.....that's exactly the point I'm making here...you've described very much what I'm saying.... If you read an intake form that says....the patient has been drinking in excess for quite some time, what does that tell you about that person's story? Nothing really, other than they have been drinking in excess for a long time. You listed several questions that need to be addressed. So, in that respect, before you diagnose, let's find out what the person's story is. If they drink in excess because they are young and think it's cool, but it does not cause a major disruption in their life....you don't then diagnose them and send them to rehab....you provide them resources and some good ol advice and tell them to make responsible choices when they drink. If the drinking is caused by life issues....then let's work at trying to manage those life issues. Does the person need a diagnosis of alcohol use disorder in order to help them....the answer is sometimes yes and sometimes no. At the end of the day, we just don't want to see the world as one big cesspool of pathology....this is why we have thousands of people diagnosing themselves on UA-cam, tiktok, snapchat, etc. The pendulum has gone from stigmatizing mental health at every turn to overgeneralizing conditions, overdiagnosing conditions, and pathologizing for everyday life stressors. As someone with a PhD in Psychology....who is not only a school psychologist, but provisionally licensed as a licensed psychologist, we just have to take our time and not be so quick to diagnose all our problems away. Let the person's story play out, and let's find solutions before we give someone a diagnosis of something they have to live with for the rest of their life. You also talked about things manifesting later in life. That can certainly be true. However, you can't always know if someone was born with something or if it was directly caused by their social-ecological circumstances. We kind of just have to take that on a case by case basis, but we certainly don't want to assume it is a diagnosable condition until we've done our due diligence and exploring their life experiences. Now, personality disorders; these disorders are still very hard to understand because there is usually a mix between social-ecological issues and neurological/ biological challenges. So I'll end with this....it is easy to receive a diagnosis. It is much harder to receive the correct diagnosis. It is even harder to work through the social-ecological challenges that we deal with on a daily basis, but it is possible even without a diagnosis. To use just one last metaphor for this discussion....if at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, we diagnosed millions of people with GAD, MDD, PTSD, etc., would that fix people's financial situations, job loss, loss of friends and loved ones, dealing with the physical effects of covid-19, etc? What would help them is getting them back to work, money in their pocket, grief counseling, food on their table, a sense of normalcy. You don't need a treatment plan to help them in those ways. If, however, they continue to experience significant mental health challenges in their lives once we've tackled the issues at hand, then we should consider diagnosis.

      @tusharkabir I see. So each U.S state will have specific course/practicum/internship requirements for licensure. Most states pretty much align with NASP requirements. To get NASP certification, at least 1200 hours of internship is required, after finishing a practicum. Both must take place in your program. NASP also outlines specific coursework that is required for NASP certification. Below is a link to that information. www.nasponline.org/standards-and-certification/national-certification

      Hello Noah. Thank you for reaching out. Clinical Mental Health Counseling programs have become more accepting of individuals who may have education that is unrelated to counseling/psychology/sociology, etc. Many programs just require a bachelor's degree, a specific GPA, and certain other application requirements (personal statement, letters of recommendation, etc.) Some programs do require some prerequisite coursework, but there are many that don't have that requirement. Some of these requirements may depend on if the program is CACREP accredited or not. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

    Not only are the hours really time consuming, some of the companies are stingy about helping you get them.Even though there is a big demand, its like they want you to sign in blood that you are going to be 1000 percent committed to it and being available for the families all the time. I was harassed about having money during my hours and also asked why I didnt do ABA with my own kids. its like a cult and they want you to act poor and treat your family like they have ASD. It didnt like the vibe. I think there are so many other kids that you can help without submitting to the ASD hysterics

    I love that you’re addressing this issue. I have my masters in counseling psychology. I’m holding out to take the NCE and work on licensure because I know I’m putting more money into it than I’m getting out of it (I did the numbers). I love this field, but recognize that it is slowly turning into our clients are just numbers. Also, I have found that #1 advice that senior counselors or licensed therapists give me is to start a private practice or work in a private practice to make more money once I’m licensed. That makes my blood boil because most therapists and counselors recognize community mental health is terrible. Also, I think it’s such a easy and scapegoat advice to give because if everyone starts a private practice who is going to reach the low income individuals who rely on Medicaid, insurance, or just can’t pay over $100 a session. Most of the individuals I know who run private practices do not accept insurance and the amount for one session was over $100. I think it’s classist and basically telling individuals that if you’re of low income (the population that needs it the most) you don’t deserve my time as a therapist. I think it’s more beneficial to start unions or to hold community mental health agencies accountable for exploiting workers. If everyone starts private practices, there is going to be a large gap within the population of those who can receive services.

    My son has been having fights in school as a 1st grader I volunteer here n there and the kids aren't bad at all I see a disconnect with the teacher some as she is a YT Female and the whole class is Black, but she is good nonetheless she and I often communicate via phone or text. She even sees the masculinity is what's lacking some in the class and/or home and always asks me to volunteer. Lastnight I has a epiphany on a program to start targeting kids of that age and just utilizing my life lessons, fact that I'm a young man who once was a boy so I can relate to how to interfere, interact, interject what the kids feel or have methods to get to the bottom of the issue. The kids take to me very well they're very respectful but there kids so ofc they get side tracked and sometimes goes awall but it's like playful things lol I know I can intervene and be a sycces to these young greats I just don't know if I need a license or degree to get started. I'm tempted to start it ASAP and jump in but I don't wanna be stopped for not having proper credits. Is there away to get started . I have alot of sales Customer service experience & I've done some self led Activism that has reached Washington Post, The Source, Reuters and other big named tabloids. I know im ideal and well equipped by default but I honestly don't wanna goto school or anything I'm ready today! Help someone
