@@nadim10000 Yes. Matte screen protectors (and the nano coating from Apple) work by scattering light through a textured material. The scattered light, by definition, makes the display look less sharp.
I love the nano texture. At work the reflections from overhead lighting would cause me to have to angle the iPad to get them off the screen. I also feel like the writing feel with the Apple Pencil is better. It glides but doesn’t feel slippery.

@@1rstTryyeah you lose contrast and sharpness, standard 100% i generally get almost 0 glare when i use it anyways and a rep at the Apple Store has told me they have been a lot more nano displays returns than regular ones
A bit late to the party, but having experienced both finishes myself for a few weeks, I'd say your observations are in line with mine. And since nano texture is always an add-on and not free, I'd go as far as to say: does the lighting/sun glare annoy you significantly on a glossy screen? Then the nano texture is for you, otherwise simply don't bother with the nano texture. Only other reason for nano texture would be the feeling with the Apple Pencil, but that's probably personal anyway. My wife draws a lot and owns an 11" iPad Pro glossy, but she found the nano texture to be too smooth and prefers her hand being 'stopped' by the glossy screen.
The nano option is the best for those that need anti reflection. The anti reflection screen protectors aren’t nearly as good as the etched at diffusing light. A 50 cent piece of plastic on top of a tandem OLED $1300+ device. Why cheap out on the most expensive part of the iPad - the display?
I lamented the loss of matte because I find the glossy screen reflections are more of a trigger for headaches. I do hope they will make this new nano-texture an option on lower end versions of the iPad.
@@abhisekmohanty4959you can’t compare the image quality of such. Same as if you compare etched screens vs protectors in other drawing tablet screens. Those plastic overlays always is a bit more budget and the results in image quality is of course tied to it
completely agree with you, people saying that "paper like is the same" just don't have direct experience with this product, which is clearly superior. Obviously, OLED is at its best without texture, but the whole point (of the technology and this video) is how little you lose and how much you gain (without reflections). An iPad is for using everywhere, generally.
Got mine 3 days back it's the same experience but I was comparing it with my older M2 iPad Pro. I was in love with my older display but when comparing it with the new M4 nano texture display it's better by leaps and bounds. So agree with everything you say 9/10 times I will too choose the nano texture display.
Can you do a comparison with a screen with a matte screen protector vs a nano textured screen? We already know the difference between a glossy vs matte screen in terms of clarity and textures feel. What we want to know is does it justify upgrading to 1tb and paying an extra 100 dollars for the nano screen vs just slapping a matte protector?
Good. Thank you for actual pics of side by side comparisons because the second most useful review had an actual artist drawing on compared devices showing how the skin doesn’t stick when gliding across the nano screen.
You are supposed to only use the cloth from apple to clean the nano texture display. Their nano texture monitor had the same instruction because microfibre would leave scratches and eventually remove the nano texture. They probably improved it a lot but considering that you still need to use the apple cloth makes it obvious that it is still more prone to damage than the regular variant. I've always used screen protectors on my ipads, so the nano texture would be wasted since all the paperlike protectors I know are also matte.
I’d still take the standard glass any day of the week purely for its contrast 10/10. The glare is annoying, but i don’t work outdoors and it’s something i can deal with
Finally got around to affording an upgrade to the new 13” iPad Pro M4 from my M1 (the battery in my M1 just doesn’t last anymore and for really no reason other than forcing an upgrade, Apple locks all the battery-saving software features in iPads to the M2 chip and higher). I went with the standard glass, to save money, but also because I am one of those people that likes to take my iPad everywhere and just have peace of mind with a tempered glass screen protector. I’d rather a $15 screen protector take the damage and get replaced than a costly screen repair. I also worry that the Nano Textured Glass would require special cleaning rather than just a standard microfiber cloth I have multiples of already as a glasses wearer. Looking forward to receiving my new M4 machine later this week!

Great comparison! Some things can't be captured on video though. The reflections on the standard glass look much more disturbing on video than they do in the real world, because the eye is focused on the screen display, while reflections appear "behind" it, and thus are not so much in focus and less disturbing. This effect can't be replicated on a UA-cam video, here the reflections fully mix with content. Personally, I got the standard model, since I'm mostly working inside and have control over room lighting, and I like the billiance of the standard display. Watching HDR movies on this display is really awesome.
@@litjellyfish Well, they can, but that may not be their focus. When I got my Studio display, there was also an etched option on offer. I compared those in the Apple Store. I'm not an artist, I work mostly with text (documents and writing code). Letters appeared with slightly soft edges on the etched display, while they were tack sharp on the standard display. So I went with the standard display here as well. Did I not have the possibility to set up my room as I want (e.g. windows or lights behind me), I would have gotten the matte version instead.
@@valuemastery yes exactly. I think many who bash the nano texture don’t really are the people who wants it. So naturally they only see the downsides of it.
Thanks for the video. I want the glare reduction of the nano, but the side-by-side comparisons starting at 3:18 make the text of the nano look noticeably blurry. The Reykjavik image at 3:23 looks particularly bad. Is this just grossly exaggerated by the zoom? Even the screen at 3:57 looks horribly washed out by comparison. Side-by-sides at 4:20-4:55, however, look pretty comparable to me.
I think the use of a screen protector is the main issue for me. Drawing on an ipad that get's a scratch, or even worse and groove that will snag the pencil just enough to irritate me constantly is the reason I went with the traditional glass and slapping a paper like type of screen protector on it. I can replace whenever I need and deal with the muted colors. Also I saved a bit of money as I only wanted the 512 model. If Apple ever offered an ARTIST MAX PRO IPAD haha with replaceable nano texture screens specifically for artists, I would probably be interested. Especially if they did so on a 16" mode that dual boots iOS ;-)
You only get a blur on the reflections, nothing changes on the image coming from the screen. If you can notice a lowered contrast, that means the glossy model would be unusable due to deatailed reflections. You prefer detailed reflections over blurred reflections. That is all there is to it.
Well it’s either that or pay to see yourself in the reflection the entire time and not be able to watch it on your porch. Also compare them in person in reference mode with content in hdr. That contrast difference disappears.
Got the nano texture because I will running my iPad in our f150 work truck as a dash mounted tablet, finger prints and glare sucks so much even with a matte screen protector, hope this is much better
It really doesn’t seem much different than the paper like screen protector. The downsides seem to out weigh the good for sure. I’m sure it feels nice, but so does a paper like. It looks like you’re basically trading the glare for lower definition quality. Now on a television screen, or a monitor maybe, I could definitely see this being really useful.
Apple launched new iPad Pro models with OLED display and M4 chipset. Users reported grainy display issues, likely due to the Mura effect in dark UI elements. Apple has not addressed the causes or implications of the Mura effect. IS THIS TRUE FROM OTHER UA-camRS?
@@admiraladmirably Well people are saying that you have to upgrade to 1TB to get nano texture. But you get 1TB storage, 16GB of Ram and the nano texture at that price.
@@ourtinywindows There are people that don’t need the extra RAM and storage but just the nano textured glass, so they basically just pay extra. Also 16 gigs of RAM should be the bare minimum for a device of this kind.
I got the standard and would so again. The nano textured iPad is just for a different use case, not better or worse. I use my iPad mostly in darker rooms, I don’t use overhead lighting at the same time, I don’t have direct sunlight where I use it and I often do so later at night. The standard has better sharpness, deeper blacks and colors you expect from an OLED Display. And I use the pencil not that much, that I really would notice the better handling.
Such a high quality video that was so helpful in making the decision. Your multiple video examples of different use case scenarios was so useful. Loved the Bible verse. Thank you for all your hard work.
I have paper like on my current iPad Air. I’m going to upgrade to the 13” pro soon. I know you said you wouldn’t recommend a screen protector on the nano textured glass, why not? While the feel is pretty cool, you’re getting it for its light reflecting abilities anyway so not get a protector?
My guess is a screen protector won’t stick to the nano texture easily. If you want a matte finish and screen protector get the glossy screen and a matte screen protector.
Dude… if you put a regular glass screen protector ON TOP of a surface that doesn’t reflect, what’s gonna happen? The glass screen protector is gonna reflect anyways. Crazy how many people don’t understand basic physics, or even have basic common knowledge.
Really great breakdown. Getting closer to making a decision myself. I am getting the 1tb model. Have you noticed a quality difference with photos. I will be using it for photo and video editing and mainly was concerned about decreased quality for photo editing on the nano texture.
As much as you may want the nanotexture model it may be less accurate as you can tell in the video there is a small amount of line bleeding, it's ever so slightly not as sharp. Nonetheless, it may not matter that much for you and the enjoyment of it may be a better deal for you. The color is basically the same but looks ever so slightly lighter as seen in the video. As someone who's drawing with it I really like the idea of the nanotexture but at the same time I am super OCD about lines and color, it doesn't look like that big of a deal though if you're excited about the nanotexture. If you feel like you'd appreciate it day in and day out, get it. I hope this helps.
There’s clearly downsides to this nano texture - looks more washed out and much worse contrast. Therefore it should be just a free option. 100$ is crazy. Isn’t it somewhat similar to the textured glass back of an iPhone?
just wait a few months while not the same there will be matte glass screen protectors! and you can replace it when it wears down because even apples version will wear down!
The nanotexture is not like any screen protector Ive ever used. Zero toothiness to the texture but I prefer it anyway. Its silky smooth with the perfect amount of drag. Do not listen to anyone claiming that the apple pencil feels the same on the nano as the standard. 100% false
Thanks Josh. This video is the one I’d been looking for. The comparison is awesome! I put a regular class screen protector and a matte screen protector on my iPad. The glass made it much it much slicker to write on with the Apple Pencil. The matte screen protector was perfect but made the screen too grainy. I took it off after watching your video and discovered the Apple glass is just fine. I’m going to go into the Apple Store today and take a look at the nano screen myself. Your video makes the differences look minimal.
Thanks - a great video and just what I was looking for. One concern I have is that I think you have to use the special cloth with the nano texture otherwise you can ruin the screen and I will almost certainly forget to take it with me when I’m out and about…
Very nice review! Thaks. I got the nanotexture one, still evaluating it but I agree with your conclusion. Nanotexture is batter in overall image quality in 7 out of 10 usage scenario for me. It would be interesting if you could compare the nanotexture with some matte or paperlike screen protectots, I made a sport comparison with just one of them (paperlike).
I have seen MANY reviews on the nano textureed display where users said it damaged the tip of their Apple Pencil's. Apple Pencil is way too expensive for damaging it that way.
Probably would depend on how long those screen protectors last in terms of scratches and overall longevity. I’d also only consider nano if I was already going for the 1 or 2 TB!
Thanks!

I’d love to see a review of the old and the nano, the two real choices for buyers today
If they’re less noticeable outside, what’s the point?
Great and concise review. Thank you for not being biased.
0:13 High end *SIX* thousand dollar monitor!
My issue is the nano texture is locked behind a really high price point. Get a really good matte finish screen protector and you’re set.
wich one?
Buy best OLED in the world, and pay extra to get chromatic aborations, color fringe, haze/reduced contrast, and unsharp text. No thanks.
My thoughts from the beginning
@@anxy4895 Well you can probably get the same effect by buying a cheap matte screen protector then :P
You only get a blur on the reflections, nothing changes on the image coming from the screen. If you can notice a lowered contrast, that means the glossy model would be unusable due to deatailed reflections. You prefer detailed reflections over blurred reflections. That is all there is to it.
And btw this is more durable than traditional coatings that do the same thing. The other differences Apple claims do not exist.
Well it’s either that or pay to see yourself in the reflection the entire time and not be able to watch it on your porch. Also compare them in person in reference mode with content in hdr. That contrast difference disappears.
Thanks. Any decision is right for iPad Pro M4 :) Switched from iPad Pro 2017. :) Difference is visible :)
Lucky you, Apple just dropped support for your old (former) 2017 iPad Pro model at WWDC yesterday, so you upgraded at just the right moment.
Looking at the light bar behind the iPad on the left, makes me think I’d be ok with an antenna on my iPad. It doesn’t look bad.
thank you for the asmr close up nano texture review ive been looking for for weeks!!
Got the nano texture because I will running my iPad in our f150 work truck as a dash mounted tablet, finger prints and glare sucks so much even with a matte screen protector, hope this is much better
Fingerprints Look just as Bad as on the regular model
It really doesn’t seem much different than the paper like screen protector. The downsides seem to out weigh the good for sure. I’m sure it feels nice, but so does a paper like. It looks like you’re basically trading the glare for lower definition quality. Now on a television screen, or a monitor maybe, I could definitely see this being really useful.
really really good review thank you so much
but if u want a screen protector it would hinder the matte screen 😅
I think the Samsung screen coating solution is superior to the Apple's nano texture.
Better buy an M2 iPad Air instead. Or the M2 iPad Pro.
Worth noting the nano texture glass option comes packaged with 16GB RAM
So?
@@admiraladmirably Well people are saying that you have to upgrade to 1TB to get nano texture. But you get 1TB storage, 16GB of Ram and the nano texture at that price.
@@ourtinywindows There are people that don’t need the extra RAM and storage but just the nano textured glass, so they basically just pay extra. Also 16 gigs of RAM should be the bare minimum for a device of this kind.
@@admiraladmirably I’m not defending the choice system I was just pointing out there is more info.
Should screen protector be added on top of a nano-texture display?🤔
Love the verse from Ecclesiastes 😃
🙂
Islam is the only truth, bible is corrupted.
Jesus Christ (Peace be upon him) never claimed to be God.
What kinda care does the nano requires I heard that one has to be extra careful. Is it true?
Nano texture is like coating for LED monitors? Those are very hard to clean
Can you put a screen protector on the nano textured
The added friction when using apple pencil will make it more like writing on a paper
Such a high quality video that was so helpful in making the decision. Your multiple video examples of different use case scenarios was so useful. Loved the Bible verse. Thank you for all your hard work.
I wonder if Apple will ever add the nano texture option to the iPhone?
I don’t really think that’ll happen.
Waiting for the price to do nano screen. Way too price. Agree the lock behind the hard drive
Great comprehensive coverage of your subject. Liked and subscribed. Thank you.
I think for ipad it makes sense, but not sure I'd get it for photo/video editing on a macbook pro
Glossy looks way better.
You gotta get the beautiful glossy display
How to clean it ?
Would have been nice if their was an option for nano texture on 256 gig model
Would you say that a matte screen protector like paper like feels better for drawing then the Nano texture?
One concern I have is that I think you have to use the special cloth with the nano texture otherwise you can ruin the screen and I will almost certainly forget to take it with me when I’m out and about…
Hey! Can I get the link for your Apple Watch Ultra band? Thanks!
Great relevant review. Still don't know what to get but your video helped.
Would a prodcut like Paperlike match the nano texture?
I have seen MANY reviews on the nano textureed display where users said it damaged the tip of their Apple Pencil's.
Apple Pencil is way too expensive for damaging it that way.
The tip is replaceable, and on the NT glass, wears down less than with a matte screen protector.
Great comparison, thanks for the info!
would an additional screen protector diminish the quality of nano glass? just need protection for scratches
That would completely defeat the purpose.
So what if you apply paperlike matte screen protector woth 2 screens for $45
Should i get the nano texture or get ipad pro with paperlike
Probably would depend on how long those screen protectors last in terms of scratches and overall longevity. I’d also only consider nano if I was already going for the 1 or 2 TB!
