  • There are many ways to finish composite decking ends. Picture framing is my top choice of the 8 ways I know how to finish decking ends.

    So you didn’t square up the boards to the house and the whole thing is off 3/8 of an inch….. nice job you hack.

    To get a perfectly square corner, you want to aim for a measurement ratio of 3:4:5. In other words, you want a three-foot length on your straight line, a four-foot length on your perpendicular line, and a five-foot length across. If all three measurements are correct, you'll have a perfectly square corner. Learn to square your decks and you don't have to be a hack. 👍

    Did someone actually ask why picture framing is done? It's not just for composite. All wood looks like crap on the ends.
    Oh and the overhang is common sense. Do you really get asked this?

    Sooooo....how come the boards have that groove in the sides but the picture frame boards don't

      Those grooves are called curfs. All of them have them on the bottom side (to reduce material and ultimately cost), however the perimeter (picture frame) boards are solid edge vs. grooved edge of the field boards.

      The field boards are grooved to receive hidden fasteners, the perimeter (or picture frame) boards are solid edge.

    What do you think about running fascia flush to deck top to hide edge, or using L-Angle trim over it?

      Absolutely not, that’s the way ours is, creates a gap you’ll have to caulk and it looks terrible, the guy who built our deck didn’t overhang the picture frame boards looks horrible.

      @@appleslorri2012 the guy Devin from Trex academy does this very thing to allow airflow and debris to pass through. But be sure to use shims underneath attached to rim joist to allow for proper even gap.

    3/8 over about 8 feet that deck is almost a full inch out of square.

    You could use a solid core composite, looks like an end cut similar to using wood. That is nice though!

      I used the FastenMaster TrapEase 3 color matched to the Trex where I couldn't use the hidden fasteners. They sunk perfect... after the first 2 went deep. But the picture frame can't get hidden fasteners on the edges. I did use a router bit from Amazon that let me cut the inside edge of the picture frame boards so I could use the hidden fasteners up to them.

    i did this with my composite decking, went with veranda since it was what was avail and tired of wood. man it burnt my fingertips carrying floppy 16' boards up in summer heat....lesson learned lol. I did the overhang 1" so i can put 3/4 under it with a small overhang but i wish i started on the inside but i have a rain screen with coravents so some wiggle room under there but i cannot push it against the back and block the airflow or the flashing so now i have some super odd shaped cut i have to do since i made the picture frame first , lots of lessons learned, just found you afterwards and will follow :) thanks

    We do not have good wood like Our shop teacher did. None of our Boards are Straight and not twisted, They used to Cut down 200 year trees to build houses, now we can use 2 Year old trees. Cheaper, and WAY more expensive. $500.00 a Sq Ft.

Trades people can see ALL the faults,..... non trades, just think everything is great and it ends up being one of two things.. It is either right to your eye.... OR.... The client is happy.. Even if YOU know it could be better 😉

      l made great friendships with the homeowner first and foremost, that was my
      ble$$ings and my curse. I couldn't do it wrong even if l tried.
      They were never there, l had their home all to myself.... so, l checked, checked and tripled checked before saying it was done. It had to meet my standards over theirs. Those interior decorators forced me to become pickier than they were.
      That is the cursed part. l noticed God could give a shit about how he paints a butterfly.
      Check out the proportions of the Statue of David, it wasn't meant to be seen from 6 feet either.
      I love this guys work and his interaction with the humans more. ✌🏽

      That reminds me of a quote:
      "If you haven't got the time to do it right, when are you going to find the time to do it over?"
      We had strict time-tables and could afford no wasted motion and attention to the details was the name of the game.
      I also remember a guy telling me that his boss slowed everyone down at times, to remind them that they were being paid to do it right, not to do it fast.
      There is salvation in knowing you can excel in speed and quality. That made us the creme d' la creme in our field.
      I miss that adrenaline rush. Nothing else can compare.

    When you charge all the $$$ that you want, it is because your work will stand up to scrutiny. Clients in that market appreciate you to be pickier than they are.
    That's how you came recommended in the first place.
    I would have started from the outside, in , just to make sure. No more difficult an install.
    You know the customer's friend is going to point it out. ??
    High end Wood floor installs were no different.
    We had to get a pass or else there was no final check. Doctor, Engineer types, will hold you to strict scrutiny. $$$ profit$ is your reward. Your "passion" is earned, season by season and years of exceeding your own need to excel the highest demands of the decorator types. Estate homes over $30,000,000
    were our playground. l thank all the picky people who taught me "why it matter$"

    Looks good until winter when all the gaps open up. I've glued and screwed and still opens up. Summer time everything tight again

      You can't stop the movement you can only design for it. Dr.Deck has some good tips on ways to hide gaps.

    Then you’ve never met me!! I’ve been a carpenter’s wife for 41 years and I can guarantee you I will spot the flaws and mistakes at a glance in flooring, decking, drywall, paint, tiling, carpeting, trim work, masonry, concrete, roofing, etc. My husband constantly calls me “a contractors worst nightmare” because I take no prisoners and I WILL make you do it RIGHT or you’re not done until it is!!
    I know every isle at Home Depot and Lowe’s and I know terminology & tools better than most apprentices. I can tell you how to do something to code and I expect you to go beyond if I hire you to do a job. AND, I will go behind you (in front of your face) and triple check your work….with a tape measure (that I carry 24/7), if needed. Further, even though it doesn’t look like it, I also speak Spanish, which I will not tell you about, so when the crew starts talking, I usually get all the ammo I need.

    Your overhang isn’t acceptable in my books. An unequal overhang will always be very noticeable. Due to the shadow line the overhang creates. A good carpenter works out his deck layout. So the overhang is the same end to end.

      You say that but wood warps and moves. Your frame could be square one day and you come the next and theres discrepancies along it where the joists and dwangs (scottish for noggins - not sure what u guys call em). Also composite decking can bow ever so slightly. You wouldnt notice the shadow line outside either dont be silly

      you will end up with a bias rip up against the siding of the house if its a existing out of square deck lol. What would you as the builder and homwowner rather do? Move sonotubes and re-frame or have a 3/8 discrepancy in a overhang. He did it the best way possible given the situation

      If vinyla railing possilby some movement to allow for expansion and contraction. Otherwise I think there is a problem.

      Thats a good idea. The line of decking doesn't allow plugs. Trex's Enhance, scalloped without enough material for plugs.

      That would be better and is always the goal but life happens. Desings that account for that allow you to have a good lookng deck even when perfection is not achieved.

      I did Constructions, We would never let the homeowner or do it while they were there. They will aggravate you to death saying they paid for it to be perfect. Wee; Good Damn Luck.

I'm a carpenter myself and, for the record, the overhang might not be noticeable. Within tolerance, as they say. I can't claim to be mm perfect all the time. I wondered why you wouldn't start with the overhang and work away from it, considering it'll be the scrutinized bit, and the most visible. Just thinking out loud. It looks good, btw, to be fair. You're braver than I, putting work out there for people to criticize! Most comments are positive though.

      @@teanreece Thanks for your comment. Yes, starting with the first board will improve your chances of having a consistent overhang. Still having the decking straight on the deck is more important than following the little changes of material depth, tightness of the fascia board screwed on the rim, etc. but I am confident you know this.
      My main point which I think you understand is there are little tricks and best practices to help make where you fall short still look good.

    Picture framing is pretty, more work though. We just bring the facia up to the top of the deck.

      I have doen both but yes I lke the look of picture framing more. And it minimizes water being traped beind the fascia board.

      Next to picture framing is raising the composite fascia flush to the top of the decking to cover the ends. Covers the ends well but is not good for stairs with people stepping on the edge of the fascia plus water getting trapped behind the fascia and the rim joist.

      There's no such thing as perfection in remodeling. Only things that appear to be perfect. Also guys who rock those leather knee pads don't mess around.
