Hi! I am Ryan Nickel - a Red Seal carpenter, the owner and operator of E3 Construction Which allows me to do three things that I love, building things, spending time outdoors and sharing what I have learned with others. I hope to share what I have learned from years of wearing a tool belt and am still learning every summer as I have the privilege of building decks. Along with sharing what I learned of the things that can further enhance your outdoor oasis, making your deck, your happy place with the right accessories.

Why Aluminum Railing on a Fiberon Composite Deck?
thats why they sell end cap
That’s a wobbly deck
You can also use trim nails with a 2x4 for a fence as well and considering the nail holes you have to sand a deck before stain so can use wood filler
Only use the flat bottom composite decking. It's your job to give your customers the best product not the cheapest that made the quality suffer. I would never us the decking with the grooves out the back or sale it to one of my customers.
If anybody ever considers a “economic line” of composite decking then it’s the contractors job to inform them that it’s garbage. It’s a “ buy once ,cry once” scenario when it comes to composite
How do you do a mitred corner? What do you do to make them look neat and tight?
Skilled
I have no problem with this not being to code. What I have a problem with is that this implementation fails to meet the physical problems that the code is trying to address. Stupid code calls for 1" between post and concrete. You need to have a capillary break of adequate size to stop water from sitting in contact with the post and the concrete via capillary action even if crap piles up on your piers. Second, you need to design it so that rain does not sit underneath beam, rotting it away over the years. My guess is that if you put a metal flashing around the top of pier and then rest the beam on a capillary break or plastic grate, you could have a functioning solution. Another idea is to cut narrow grooves on the bottom of the beam so that you have drainage channels, but that seems a bit more complicated.
This is amazing! Thank you so much for this video. I had a straight edge I bought but could not secure to the deck to make my breaker board cut. This is so simple and cost me nothing. Perfect cut after procrastinating a day on how to do it without buying the track saw attachment.
good vid.....on how NOT to do it, spend a little extra time and do it right the first time
Now way Jose ! The Crown always goes up to prevent cupping ! Twenty five years of installing this Way and haven't had any issues ! Ive seen lots of DIY decks with the crown down and lots of issues !
Can you just paint some flex seal onto the tops of the joists?
Supported for what reason, no ones walking on the very edge of their deck especially with a railing..oh, ive built countless decks the last 40 yrs
“If you can’t get a it perfect, Dont even try” 😂😂😂 I’m sure he never told the home owner that one either 🥸
Your holding all the water in
Omg stop
All good, except, Trex is shit decking.
Nice framing how many years did you say you been doing it wrong
Can you raise the composite deck facia to cover the end boards if you don’t do the picture frame? Thank you for sharing!
Yes
That's old news, sonny boy.😂
Lol at the American measuring system. It's like Britain 100 years ago. "Mark it at 5 leagues & 1 Cusp - use the Modern Cusp measurement which is 20/49th of a donkeys behind.. then subtract 1 League, which is 3 refrigerators..." Can we all just go metric? It's easier, it really is.
If it's not perfect, than you are a PIECE OF SHIT!!!! just kidding. How the fuck anything gonna be perfect when the only lumber being sold nowadays is shit.
/trex leaves a lip. Why not get the squared boards?
Put joist tape down on the blocking is what I’d do
I just installed Trex Timbertech and between the joist it bends down with the sun
Lol. I used to be the quality control guy for timbertex. If you tagged them in this I guarantee you'd get a reply. They are extremely invested in the quality of their product.
I’m guessing this whole thing was scripted and this guy has never had a hammer in his hand before because nobody in the history of the world has ever pronounced composite like he just did
Master of composite decking. Can’t pronounce composite. 😂
Appreciate it!
is that gonna work on my 6 inch decking wood? Thanks!
Yes
I don’t know if you’re saying composite correctly.
Use it for steps
Those stairs will probably sag in the middle over time. A vertical support would eliminate that. Mine did, and now I'm having to deal with it!
I’d like to see it on a bracket with a 1” lift plate so water won’t sit on top of the concrete with the beam. But it looks good otherwise
Easy to maintain 🎉
just why? why would one build with this garbage. Nothing looks worse than a plastic deck
strikes me using qtrs of inches instead of elevating the IQ and start using cms, mms
That is literally what those boards are for. They’re also missing the grooves on the sides to give you a nicer finished look around perimeter.👍
Hmmmm…..that’s a big gap when using Camo on wood. When the wood shrinks the gap will get bigger. For wood, I wouldn’t go more than like 1/16. Over time 1/16th will easily turn into 1/4 to 5/16ths or even 3/8ths…And for PVC material, no more than 3/16ths…
Nice
How come the overlap came out uneven?
3/16” on all end cuts. You don’t make em tight with wood why would you on composite. Manufacturers all state 1/8-3/16” gap.
Experienced man right there.
Is and overhang going to support any weight given that a railing will be installed around the edges?
Do you not have to leave a gap for a mitre edge?
Wow!!what a revelation
Looks great! I called TREX because I found end caps on eBay but they said not to use them. They recommended using a dark brown exterior stain that matches.
There is a third option that is best of all worlds. Take 2 off cuts and put them vertical on the corner. No exposure to end grain other than below. Looks beat
the top step, the deck doesn't have a nosing on it. But you're adding a nosing to all the other steps.
Yeah... I always notice stuff like that.
