    So would you say the topic is what the passage is about? And then the main idea would be the author's opinion or argument regarding that topic? I seem to get those two confused often especially when the topic sounds like it would be the main idea. Thank you for the videos though I have learned lots!! :)

    • @NurseCheung
      @NurseCheung  4 роки тому +2

      These two subjects can become very confusion. Topic is the general subject of a paragraph or essay. Topics are simple and are described with just a word or phrase. The main idea is a complete sentence; it includes the topic and what the author wants to say about it. If the author states the main ideas in his paragraph it is called a "topic sentence." I hope that is helpful. ☺️

    Hi! I am new to your channel:) And I am planning on taking the TEAS in a few short weeks(I am excited yet nervous!) I am still struggling a little bit on how to identify the topic sentence. I have seen different you tube videos from others saying the topic sentence will always be in the first paragraph, the first sentence. I don't know if I am overthinking it, but I can't seem to get it:((

    • @NurseCheung
      @NurseCheung  3 роки тому

      Great question Yeah Adwere-Boamah ☺️💜 I struggle with the word "always" because in nursing school you will learn that the answers which include always are incorrect. Typically, the first sentence can be identified as the topic sentence; however, it is not true in ever case. The topic sentence discusses the main idea of a paragraph as a whole. Find the sentence that does not provide supporting details and discusses the main idea ☺️ You got this!

    I have a question. From 5:50, could you explain the difference between the topic sentence and the summary sentence? Because I thought the answer was A. Thank you.

    • @NurseCheung
      @NurseCheung  3 роки тому +1

      Great question Chloe Kim! A summary sentence is an optional acknowledgment of the paragraph. If the information that is presented is complex or the paragraph is longer than usual, a summary sentence at the end of the paragraph provides the readers with the overall purpose of the paragraph. The topic sentence essentially tells readers what the rest of the paragraph is about. Topic sentences related back to the thesis of the essay. For example: There are many reasons why pollution in Orange County is the worst in the world.

    Hi, Chang, Thank you so much for those video. but I am still confused about the topic , theme, and main idea. would you mind make it clear for me. thank you so much

      Hi there! I'm glad you found my videos helpful. Let me try to explain topic, theme, and main idea in a simple way.
      Topic is what a text is about. It's the subject matter, or the general idea of what the text is discussing.
      Theme is the underlying message or meaning of a text. It's what the author is trying to convey about the topic.
      Main idea is the most important point that the author is trying to make about the topic. It's the "big picture" idea that ties everything in the text together.
      I do have more recent videos on the Version 7 portion of the test that goes into more detail about these topics. I hope this helps clarify things for you. Let me know if you have any more questions!

    Thank you so much for your talency, would you mind explaining Theme?

    • @NurseCheung
      @NurseCheung  3 роки тому

      A literary theme is the main idea or underlying meaning a writer explores in a novel, short story, or other literary work. The theme of a story can be conveyed using characters, setting, dialogue, plot, or a combination of all of these elements. In simpler stories, the theme may be a moral or message: “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” In more complex stories, the central theme is typically a more open-ended exploration of some fundamental aspect of society or humanity. ☺️❤️

    All videos are very helpful, but sometimes my video is blurry? DOES this happening?

    • @NurseCheung
      @NurseCheung  3 роки тому

      There could be a number of reasons this is occurring Tesfa Egzi. If you skip parts of the video then it make take time for the internet to load and focus the content. It would also be the standard definition in which you are viewing it. If it isn't in HD, then the video quality will be poor. ☺️

    I have a question tho, do they actually write these very long passages on the actual test , because the exam is timed and just reading the passages would take forever

    • @NurseCheung
      @NurseCheung  2 роки тому +1

      Great question Kenty Iluminada ☺️💜 You will find long passages on the current version 6 test. I highly recommend that you read the questions associated with the passage before trying to read everything. Many times the question is only asking for something specific in one paragraph or one sentence. This will save you a lot of time on the exam to focus on other questions that require more thought. ☺️ I hope that helps answer your question.

    Can you please explain what a theme is? I think I understand, but sometimes I’ll get it mixed up with the main idea

    • @NurseCheung
      @NurseCheung  3 роки тому +2

      Great question Cyb0rg 21. ☺️ The theme of a passage or book focuses on the message, lesson or moral it wants the reader to take away. The main idea is what the book is mostly about. Examples of themes would include jealousy, friendship, overcoming obstacles, and it's okay to be different. Main idea could be Patrice wanted the same things Mary had; Keith was afraid of heights and went on a helicopter ride to get over his fears; and Rachael and Monica were always there for each other. I hope that clears up the differences.
