Great information that helped me rebuild my valve body after accidentally separating and losing the balls and not knowing where they went inside. Thanks for sharing your knowledge for DIY garage mechanics like myself.
All you guys making vids for these CVTs and sharing the common problems are serious mechanical-saints! Man, I just want to slap you back so hard and give ya a shaking side hug! You’re awesome! Saved me from a raging fit. You give me hope like saving my religion! Fist bump the air as I declare, true heroes!
Man thanks a bunch. My 2011 nissan rogue was making a winning sound and the paint from the bottom of the pan clogged up filter and valve body. Cleared everything and back on the road.
This a great video Kennedy, thank you for posting. I have issues with my valve body after changing the stepper motor on a 2008 Nissan Sentra doesn’t want to back up, I notice that small round black plastic cylinder came out of the valve body, it looks like strainer or filter, and the mechanic not just put it in the wrong place but also broke it, now I am wondering where can I buy it that small cylinder and where exactly goes. In minute 3:32 you removed some of those cylinder but I couldn’t quite see the shape of them, there is anyway you can help me to figure out where that cylinder goes, also another metal cylinder that goes with spring on it came out and no idea where is it goes. Thank you
Thank you very much. I did not realize I took apart too many bolts and it came apart in sections so trying to figure out what those balls went was a big help I've learned my lesson. Do you ever vacuum check the valves in the valve body? I'm finding that's where a lot of my issues are coming from is worn our valves or the bores are wearing out and need to be reamed out and fitted with oversized valves.
2 questions for you. 1. What do you think about adding coolers for CTV transmissions? 2. Nissan CVT fluid. Nissan brand fluid is very expensive, I have a nissan second hand and it is way past warranty. I am getting ready to replace the valve body. Are there quality Non Nissan brand CVT fluids I can use, Any recommendations on which are good or what to stay away from? Thanks for the video by the way, you answered something I was confused on, why some of the replacement valve bodies come with wiring for only one of the sensors, You mentioned prior to 2010. I was going to pull mine out before ordering a new one to see if it had one or 2 sensors hooked up, I am assuming now it is going to be 2.
So if you are thrown a P1778 stepper motor code, and replacing the stepper motor will not fix the issue, what exactly is the issue and what needs to be replaced?
When putting the "entire" valvebody back in can you still use the drill bit to line up the ratio control arm? I didnt see any other video going further into detail on that or any video on UA-cam and I'm kinda stuck at this part
@@project4funner you pull the arm all the way back and you will notice a small hole that goes straight through the valve body. Place a hair pin or something small in there to keep the arm from moving back. Install the valve body and remove the pin.

My 07 patriot in limp life P0700 transmission Control System mil and incorrect gear ratio would that be from a bad valve body it won’t shift pass second it will tack out the rpm
I bought a refurbished valve body for my 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and it comes with the computer. Do I need to replace the computer with the one from my old valve body?
Transmission getting stuck in limp mode, stuck in a low gear. Also I believe it may bounce back and forth between gears like it does not know what gear it wants to be in. If your fluid is at proper level it could be valve body issue. If you are getting engine light with error code P0845 or P0840. Nissan has put out a service bulletin recommending replacing the valve body. I believe there are a couple other codes mentioned as well. Im no expert, just from what I have learned dealing with my CVT issue.

So o have a nissan murano 2005. I changed the trans oil and flushed it out. There were shavings all in the pan when I went to change it. I still went ahead and replaced filter and added castrol CVT oil. It ran well for 400 miles but now it wont even move and there's no check engin light to read. It reverses very slow and will barely move forward. I mean I have the petal to the ground and nothing. I check the trans presure and got only a trickle coming out. Could valve body be clogged.
I opened a valvebody for an SR20 Nissan Transmission and the place where the Tcc solenoid is supposed to be there is a hole with a open/close pin inside. I am beginning to think that the TCC solenoid is missing. Also the scanner shows bad stepper motor but a multimeter shows that the wiring in the stepper motor is still good. It also shows a bad line pressure solenoid (its a older model multimeter that shows codes 000e, 000b and 000f).
Edward,I am sorry, but I am not familiar with the SR20 transmission. Could this be the SR20 Nissan engine? If this is the case, do you know which CVT it is mated to? Thanks,Matt Jonson
Hay jeff i have a 2010 Mitsubishi lancer gts with a cvt jatco. I have the sst one with the paddle sifters witch i never use btw but when i star to go at a complete stop ill sift from fist to second at 2500rpm perfectly smooth then second to third at round 2-2500rpm and it will slow down then speed back up to normal kinda like a slip, then every shift later is perfect, theirs 6 speeds
I have a 2009 Nissan Altima with a P0868 stored on the tcm but no MIL. Slow acceleration from standtill and cvt whine. Could it be a pressure solenoid? Or stepper motor?
Giovanny,If the secondary pressure low code is the only one being tripped, it is less likely to be a ratio control motor or pressure control solenoid issue. Have you made sure the fluid level is full? There will be often be pressure issues and a pump whine if the fluid is a couple of quarts low. You may want to clear the code and see how it drives once you verify the fluid level is correct. Thanks,Matt Johnson

Have you ever seen one of these transmissions have belt failure and the transmission still be good? Or is the belt failure caused by something else that has failed?

Hello, We just put an used transmission of a 2008 Altima 2.5 engine in place of bad one. After we drove 30 feet, it gave P1777 step motor code. Instead of sending the unit back and get another one from the vendor under warranty, I am considering to change the step motor. However, in the video you say at 4:45 that a lot of times when you change the stepper motor, that is not the problem? So how can we figure out where the problem is? Also, I looked at Ebay and there are different kinds of step motor sold the same transmission when I enter Altima 2008. Some are RE0F10A, Some are RE0F10E, etc. How can I find out what kind of transmission is this? Does it say anywhere on the transmission? Basically, how can I find out which step motor needed for the transmission? Thank you in advance.
Everything I see shows the transmission as a Nissan RE0F10A (Jatco JF011E). Often times stepper motor DTC's are set by issues other than the stepper motor. However, with just a P1777 (circuit fault), there is a reasonable likelihood that this is just a stepper motor failure. Before going any further though, you should check your harness connection and pin tensions, clear the code and see if it returns. If it does, you may want to just install the stepper motor from the original transmission and test from there; unless you suspect it was the cause of failure. We have not had good luck with used CVT's and quit doing them all together a few years ago. Hopefully, the stepper motor (if needed) from the old unit will take care of the issue. Thanks,Matt Johnson
Thank you for your response. The weird thing is the code does not erase. You turn the key to on position, engine off. Erase. And when you read again, it is still there. Could not make it go away. The bad thing is this is the third transmission I put on this car. And I sent the original back, long time ago as core.
Assuming your scan tool is getting the code to clear, it is likely a short or open in the stepper motor circuit that is instantly re-setting the code on key up. When the code returns instantly on key up, it points towards a stepper motor failure. Thanks,Matt Johnson
Yeah, that is the case. I erase the code. Turn the key off, turn it on without starting the engine and the code is still there. So I guess I need to change the stepper motor. Thank you for your response.
Hello, have a very important question. I bought 2016 Nissan Altima SR 4 cylinder brand new. 60,200 miles tranny failure (cvt).... I have 40,000 miles on the remann cvt Nissan put in it. It seems like around 60,000 miles these cvt”s are going out. Is there anything I can do to prolong the cvt. Fluid change???? Or they just junk and hope for the best. I drive it daily with 1-3 hour travels 5 days a week.
P1778 code came up on my ‘14 Nissan Murano (bad stepper motor). Can you please elaborate on your comment that the step motor is usually not the problem?
Yep having the same problem on an Altima apparently he's not getting back to any questions anyone...as I'm not a transmission guy but have been a mechanic for over 26 years and I just am not buying a whole entire transmission when the vehicle is still driving pretty normally just throwing the stepper motor code...maybe it's a secret he don't want to tell anyone...
@@motersickel Haha I just got this code too! But car is still getting around. If anyone can chime in for this code, cause its like a secret on the net! Search for 2 days and not a fix or definite cause for it...
@@splash5974 well since this comment I have took it on myself to rebuild the transmission in the Altima and have found out it is actually pretty simple... so if you're getting that code you might want to be ready to rebuild it sometime in the future... what happens is the input variator behind the torque converter moves in and out with changes the gear ratio, well there's no actual gears it is a belt... the variator stops moving smoothly due to lack of lubrication going to the slide balls... it starts to jam up which causes a code to throw for the stepper motor that reads this movement the start of this comes from the pressure control valve in the pump gets hairline scratches in it causing a fluid pressure loss... eventually you may get a low transmission fluid pressure code people think you don't have to change the fluid and filter on these for a very long time when in fact I would do it every 30000 miles.... these Transmissions are a very good transmission they just had a few failing points whatever it takes transmission offers a overhaul kit that is also an upgrade kit ..I ordered this kit from them and a upgraded pump.... I highly recommend this kit from them....
@@motersickel Ok i was worried about it being more than just a valve body issue... Im justcabout to order a nee valbe body and swap it, but makes sense what you're saying. So the variator is damaged and not changing ratios. Thats why i can go above 45mph, cause it wont change to higher gear ratio. I seen a couple vids on rebuilding it. Thanks for the video! We have a 2016 Nissan Quest with 26k that just had a valve body replaced. I noticed that while slowing down to a stop, when the CVt would switch into it’s lower “gear” ratio (a shift that can be perceived/felt around 5-7 mph while coasting) it would make a weird crunchy/grindy noise in that ratio. The car drove fine except for this noise. I was concerned bc I have two other CVt cars that do not make this noise upon slowing down/stopping. Any idea what inside the valve body would cause this?
Anton,On the Jatco 2 speed CVT's, it is very common for the high low shift quality to take a while to adapt in well after any sort of change. I have spent hours in a couple of cases performing the relearn and then doing a ton of slow accel/ decal driving to get the shift quality to come around. That being said, I have not had any noise issues after making any valve body changes or repairs. I do not think it would be anything in the valve body at all making the noise, but the valve body controls the application of the high/ low clutch and could possibly be doing something hydraulically to cause the clutch noise. If it does not lessen soon, I would bring it back to the shop that replaced the valve body and let them hear it. I am assuming this is a new valve body installed and adapted by a dealership or someone familiar with these transmissions. Thanks,Matt Johnson
Kennedy Transmission, CVT & Auto I meant to say that I had the noise before they replaced the valve body, I am picking up the car tomorrow so hopefully it is gone. I asked them what happened but the service gal couldnt exactly state, just said the was a TSB out for this problem or something
Anton, There are a number of technical service bulletins regarding valve body replacement on these units, but none that I have seen pertaining to noise caused by a valve body issue. I would expect that the noise has been alleviated if they are having you pick the vehicle up. Assuming so, I suspect there may be a wear issue with the valve directing pressure to the high/ low clutch. Thanks, Matt Johnson

You say the stepper motor code is not caused by a bad stepper motor. I am getting the code p1778 and planned on replacing the stepper motor to try to repair problem. I can drive as many as 250 miles in between incidents and it works perfect most of the time. Any idea why I am getting that code and what I can do to repair the problem?
P1778 could certainly be caused by a mechanically faulty stepper motor. The P1778 is a performance code rather than an electrical code, meaning the controller is commanding a certain value, but not seeing the expected result (in either ratio or primary pressure) and not detecting an electrical failure with the stepper motor. If the code were a P1777 (electrical fault on the stepper motor ckt) , the likelihood of a stepper motor failure would be higher. That being said, it would be good to get the pan down, inspect metal content and the ration control valve when you test or replace the stepper motor. With just this code, if the issue is not the stepper motor it is likely internal; something impeding proper variator operation. I hope this helps. Thanks,Matt Johnson
If we do have those codes for the circuits of the solenoids and no step motor and no check engine light, by replacing just those solenoids could fix it and get the vehicle out of limp mode? I’m currently have issues where my 07 Nissan Maxima car will jump to fifth gear at 20 mph. Am i better of replacing the cvt or could there be another route
Do you know the proper pid to read the trans temp on a jeep patriot with the CVT2L version. I know dedicated scanners can but i usually only have access to my Torque Pro app for android smartphone and a obd link mx elm bluetooth adapter
Reed,I am sorry, I am not sure how to access the temp PID on the torquepro app. I know most Chrysler's are simply is ID'd as "TFT", or Transmission Fluid Temp" on most of our scan tools. You may have to access the PID under Engine data though since your Jeep has a PCM rather than separate TCM and ECM; I know this is true for most of our scan tools. Thanks,Matt \
Kennedy Transmission, CVT & Auto Thank you Matt. The pid's available in the app as well as the supplemental downloads do not register proper readings for the CVT. I was hoping to get the right pid and then just enter the values manually in the area. Take care brother and thank you for your help and time. Love the videos, they are a invaluable tool for many.
Reed,I am sorry I am not familiar with the torquepro platform. I know we can access the TFT PID with Snap-On, Autel, OTC and OEM etc... tools we use. You may be able to get a fairly accurate reading by using an inexpensive infrared thermal gun on the pan.
Fredy,Start with any Diagnostic Trouble Codes. Stepper motor circuit codes are a higher likelihood of a failed stepper motor than performance codes. Stepper motor performance (or rationality) codes are very rarely caused by a failed stepper motor. If you have a good scan tool, you can watch the stepper motor position and make sure it is changing properly. On most Jatco units the stepper motor position ranges from 0 to 188 (on the live data you generally see only an indicated position of 5 or 7 to ~188). If the stepper motor is actuating properly, you should be able to correlate the position change with the ratio change. If the position changes as expected, but the ratio does not, it is likely something else causing the issue and not the stepper motor. Thanks,Matt Johnson
Kennedy Transmission, CVT & Auto what aboit checking the resistance of the step motor I followed alldata said that all for pins of the cvt unit need 15 ohm , in 3 pins i got 15 but 1 is 10 ohm , that mean that the step motor is bad , i got the code p1777 , can wont move just idle
When it is bad your vehicle will lock in a ratio, for example, if it was in a 1:1 ratio when it fails, it will remain in that 1:1 ratio, its like keeping your car in 4th gear and driving, it won't cut off because of the torque converter.
Just wondering if you guys could lend some info. I've got a 2008 Lancer GTS CVT, same model CVT as this valve body break down. I'm throwing a code P0840. My car still drives, but feels like its in limp mode all the time. I was planning on pulling the valve body to inspect everything. Any tips or things I should look for with this code? Have you guys dealt with this code often? Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated!
With the P0840, the unit is likely defaulting (locking itself into a single ratio to avoid potentially damaging itself). I am not sure what tools you have, but I would suggest verifying the fluid level is full, documenting any other codes that may be present, clearing all the codes and driving the vehicle gently with a scan tool hooked up. You would want to monitor the pressure sensor PIDS and make sure that they are reading correctly. If the P0840 returns immediately after clearing (or simply before driving), I think a replacement of the pressure sensor would be warranted even without further testing with a DVOM. Make sure to look at the pan magnets; if the metal content is excessive, it may already be to late. Thanks,Matt Johnson
Thanks a lot for the help! I have an OBDII scanner to just check and clear codes. The P0840 is the only code that I'm throwing related to the transmission. I have a P0420 for an O2 sensor as well. I have also thrown I think a P0725 in the past, but once or twice. Some days it'll throw the code immediately when I start the car, some days it takes a couple minutes, and other days it will drive perfectly fine. I don't have any tools to monitor the pressure readout of the sensors, but I'll definitely take a look at the magnets when I pull the pan. Thanks again for the help, hopefully it's not too late!

In order to make it work, I need to put the computer on my original valve body to the newly bought valve body before I put the 'new' valve body to my car. Otherwise, my car will not run after the valve body replacement because my car's TCM won't recognize the 'new' valve body. Right?

What is your location? I am in SW Missouri. USA I own a 2011 jeep patriot latitude 4x4 with a cvt. Did a fluid filter change after the over temp light came on, it ran well, for 6 or 8 thousand miles, now it whines and surges. Suggestions are welcome, I do most of my own work, but a auto trans rebuild is something I have not done. I would try it if I knew what to replace, it does drive it just can seem to decide what ratio to stay in, it slips around in manual mode as well. Thanks
Dan, We are in Minneapolis, MN. When you replaced the filter, was there a lot of metal on the magnet or in the filter screen, or a lot of clutch material in the pan? Have you had the Jeep scanned for codes? The issue may be related to the valve body, stepper motor or pressure control solenoid, but the whining makes me concerned the issue may be internal. Did you use OEM CVT fluid? Thanks,Matt Johnson
Kennedy Transmission, CVT & Auto Yes the magnets were furry the oil in the pan seemed inundated with fine metal. It ran well after the oil change, I used valvoline cvt. Thank you for the reply.
Dan,Given the noise and the metal content, it really sounds like a bearing is failing. When the bearing starts shedding metal, that often causes scoring on the pump flow control valve which in turn causes a lack of proper ratio change. Unfortunately, I think the unit will likely have to come out and be rebuilt. Thanks,Matt Johnson
Dan,I am sorry, I do not stock any pre-built units. If rebuilding is necessary, we overhaul the vehicle's transmission. This allows us to save the vehicle's ROM and avoid needing to re-flash.

I was going to pull mine out before ordering a new one to see if it had one or 2 sensors hooked up, I am assuming now it is going to be 2.

Great video, what are symptoms of a bad valve body?
Transmission getting stuck in limp mode, stuck in a low gear. Also I believe it may bounce back and forth between gears like it does not know what gear it wants to be in.
Can the valve body cause over heating.? If yes which valve is the causes and which valves offen get worn out the most.
I opened a valvebody for an SR20 Nissan Transmission and the place where the Tcc solenoid is supposed to be there is a hole with a open/close pin inside. It also shows a bad line pressure solenoid (its a older model multimeter that shows codes 000e, 000b and 000f).

When I restart the car, it accelerates normally then after a few minutes, it goes back to the delayed acceleration. No codes other than P0868.
Giovanny,If the secondary pressure low code is the only one being tripped, it is less likely to be a ratio control motor or pressure control solenoid issue. Hello,
We just put an used transmission of a 2008 Altima 2.5 engine in place of bad one.

Does this gear is the same in compass trailhawk 4*4 2018?
How do you know when a step motor is bad, what readings should I get when testing it?
By the way great video !

I would try it if I knew what to replace, it does drive it just can seem to decide what ratio to stay in, it slips around in manual mode as well.

Yes the magnets were furry the oil in the pan seemed inundated with fine metal.
It ran well after the oil change, I used valvoline cvt.

Would this valve body also fit on a 2012 Nissan Sentra 2.0L??
