Subaru CVT Repair- Lineartronic TR 690 Disassembly
In this video Jeff runs through basic disassembly of a Lineartronic CVT to the primary and secondary variator pulleys. Although the Lineartronic units have proven more reliable than many of the Jatco CVT's, we work on and overhaul quite a few of them.
Thanks,
Matt Johnson

Basic disassembly to Variator of Jatco CVT
Theres not a lot to go wrong with one of those, but mine grinds like it has a bad cv shaft
Is there a way to bypass the second solenoid, that is eliminated in 2010.. my Mechanic put a valve body with both solenoids in a 2011.
Do you ever vacuum check the valves in the valve body? I'm finding that's where a lot of my issues are coming from is worn our valves or the bores are wearing out and need to be reamed out and fitted with oversized valves.
This a man that knows his craft well, excellent to the point video. This definately ain't no novice job, hats off to the engineers that design such products.
I changed fluid and filter then solenoid plunger code gone shifts good but now very load whine on HWY speeds? Is it the bearing? I used Valvoline CVT oil was yellow color. 2009 Nisan Rouge.
😮🎉🎉😊
...you da man pimp!
Life saver video my man. I am rebuilding one right now on my floor.
What year did they first start using the cvt transmission? I'd like to buy an older subaru before they started using these garbage transmissions. I have a 23 crosstrek with a 6spd manual and consider myself lucky they had one on the lot when i went shopping
how does he have this committed to memory. wow
Not a transmission guy here so from what I understand I can just swap the small black computer off the valve body out of my wife's jeep and Install it in a new valve body and put it back in the Jeep and shouldn't have to program anything?
do y'all know/recommend anyone thats does what y'all do inNJ/PA area? I wish I was closer to twin cities
great Video, appreciate seeing the design subaru uses here. I'm a retired toyota guy and wondered how well they are holding up.
Thank you. *Very* well done; succinct and to the point, in contrast to noisy and self-centered UA-camr videos. I purchased a 2024 Outback Wilderness, never having heard of a CVT. This video has given this non-mechanic an excellent and pragmatic introduction to a CVT. Again - thank you.
Excellent video! Thank You so much for your support!
How can I contact you?
what KM this ivt replacement pulley ?
Those two tiny rectangle filters were missing in my 2012 valve body is that normal or did I lose them both?
My CVT transmission on my Mitsubishi Outlander 2008 doesn’t shift gears automatically while on drive (D)mode it remains on 1st gear. When I use manual mode (+/-) gears shifts smoothly. Do you have an idea how to solve this issue ?
I do not like CVT transmissions at all, I just don't think they belong in a car. As for a snowmobile yes, I don't see any other way of doing it. I don't see how these large cars they put out like the Outback like the biggest best model Subaru makes, if it's got a CVT I wouldn't even try to tow with it. I see that Subaru is going to reproduce the brat, I think that's so awesome I would love to have one but with a manual transmission. I know that's never going to happen so I will stick with my 2001 Forester with 5 speed manual because I can fix that with my eyes closed.😅 Thanks for the video it's nice to see experts do proper stuff on UA-cam.👍
Is there a video of this same transmission being rebuilt?
Author runs in reverse 😎
@joeblow5037 He only disassembled the worn transmission. Putting it back together with new and improved parts requires more knowledge than just the tear down.

Jesus H C! you’re Superman! 👏🏻👏🏻
Wow... you have some serious skills.
What a disastrous design, I mean, like WTF?
does anyone know what size of 11 bolts are that keep together the valve body to the body of transmission?
Thank you very much. I did not realize I took apart too many bolts and it came apart in sections so trying to figure out what those balls went was a big help I've learned my lesson. Lol thank you big time. What causes that plunger where that stepper motor attaches to to get jammed up because on my I literally had to use a hammer to get that plunger to come out and it's very stuck
The simplicity of a Tesla single speed gearbox isn’t appreciated until you see this.
That's one UA-cam video that i won't be putting into practice myself.... Like Clint Eastwood would say ' a man needs to know his limitations '. ..
On minutes 4:03 you put a spring that came out of the valve body and I couldn’t figure out where is it goes abd the stupid mechanic put it on a different place of the valve body ow I need to replace it , where can I buy it. Thank you
This a great video Kennedy, thank you for posting. I have issues with my valve body after changing the stepper motor on a 2008 Nissan Sentra doesn’t want to back up, I notice that small round black plastic cylinder came out of the valve body, it looks like strainer or filter, and the mechanic not just put it in the wrong place but also broke it, now I am wondering where can I buy it that small cylinder and where exactly goes. In minute 3:32 you removed some of those cylinder but I couldn’t quite see the shape of them, there is anyway you can help me to figure out where that cylinder goes, also another metal cylinder that goes with spring on it came out and no idea where is it goes. Thank you
I don't have a CVT, hopefully never do. I just love mechical knowledge.💯🤷♂️
Really good
the worst CVT ever :/
What a great video. My CVT on 2010 Legacy started t slip, so would be nice to see the video of the actual service of this gearbox, what parts he replaced and so on.
You LITERALLY SAVED MY LIFE WITH THIS VIDEO THANKS A MILLION FROM ONE TECH TO ANOTHER ‼️‼️‼️ Blessings!!✅️✅️💯👨🏾🔧🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Can you buy replacement components if needed? For example if the chain guide wears out can you buy just that piece?
CAN ANYONE GIVE SOME TIPS??? I have a JACt40 CVT hard to identify the B.O. It has the mechanical operation of the CVT exchange in days, it does not make noise and does not slip, apparently there is no lack of pressure. the customer reports that he has started to experience the defect sporadically. after normal use of the car, just after turning off the ignition key, when the customer tries to use the car again The car shows a defect in the panel, and does not pull any gear. however with angus minutes or sometimes hours it works again. the last time it had this defect, it never came back... the curiosity is, because only sometimes, but not during long trips, and not malfunction while the car is running only after it is turned off, and the worst, just come back alone already checked: valve body TCM) transmission oil diagnosis (FAILURE IN COMMUNICATION WITH CANTRAL) There is no stepper motor on this model.
What I want to know, is why we aren't suppose to change the fluid every 25,000 miles, like any other transmission? I have yet to see a truly reliable transmission that only changes fluid every 100,000mi.
I have a 2011 AWD Tuned Juke and I am starting to get nervous.. I feel the slack in the belt now. If I throw her in sport mode it titans back up but it's getting there.. I found a Brand New CVT fresh in the Box for my Make and Model yesterday for $5500 uninstalled.. Sounds about right..
Yeah that little black plastic brain is so important.. Save that out of your Broke CVT for the New one Or you will have to Deal with Nissan and that's not fun..
Is there a recommended CVT FLUID?
I bought a refurbished valve body for my 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and it comes with the computer. Do I need to replace the computer with the one from my old valve body?
Would replacing the valve body fix the P0841 code?
I have this transmission in a 2008 Lancer. There is a clicking noise that sounds like a bad inner CV axle but I've been told that the noise is coming from the transmission. The axle boots have been leaking and the noise is only heard when coasting with the engine running. No axle noises with the wheels cut and no noise coasting while the engine is off. I've been driving it this way for quite some time and the transmission isn't slipping. I just did the second transmission fluid change (80,000 and 140,000) and the mechanic showed me the pan on request. The fluid was of good color and there were no metal shavings on the magnets. What could this noise be? Should I worry about it or just keep driving it that way? Could a bad inner CV axle be the culprit?
Muchas Gracias amigo
LUBEGARD CVT transmission fluid is the best. Heat it the killer and cvts have alot of friction. The liquid wax esters are fascinating tech. I having been using there products for years and I have never had a Auto trans go out on me. I drive 100,000 miles a year and change my fluid every 35k miles . I use Lubegard Atf additve in between fluid changes. Cvt transmissions will last ,Subaru's will if you keep the fluid really clean and use a AUX cooler, there CVT is better cause it uses a Chain instead of a belt type. Nissan's suck and the number one killer on Nissan CVT is heat death. Jatco manufacturers Subaru's transmission also but fuji had a 50 percent say in that design and it had to be much better than what Nissan has been putting out there for 10 years. Nissan has ruined there reputation and they are wondering why there sales are going down the tubes. Nobody wants to buy a car and have to spend 7000 grand on a new trans at 50,000 miles because like Kia,Nissan looks for any excuse to deny warranty work. They have been making bad transmissions for 20 years and there are no repairing Nissan Cvt when it does it blows metal bits everywhere.
Does the valve body need to be reprogram
Which is considered better a belt or a chain?
chain
Nice vídeo man, nice vídeo!!!
