It snowing here in southeastern Pennsylvania. We placed our Christmas tree outside and had mixed peanut butter and bird seeds and smeared them on the branches. The birds are loving it because they can hide in the branches and eat safely from any predators like hawks.
I’m next door to you and It sucks here in Pennsylvania! Now it’s nearly single digit temps and at least 5 “ on crappy snow on the ground! God knows I hate it so much!

We love to feed our birds, feed them now & enjoy their lovely singing later. Here is cementropolis, people are more worried about weeds in their grass, than in nature. We do what we can here at our house.
We used to make birdfeeders with the children at the school where I worked (the favourite after-school club was wildlife club!). We just used yogurt pots, upturned, full of fat and seeds. The children would bring them in, and, like you, we would fill cones too. Then we'd hang them around the wildlife garden. One or two years, a crow came who had learned how to manipulate the string up so that he could rest the containers on their sides and eat the contents without having to hang upside-down! Clever birds, crows!
I love how the birds flit about behind you as they wait for your arrival. My mum feeds and waters the birds as well and they tap on her glass windows and doors if she is late to feed.😂

Great video Kate😊 It is a cold 17 degrees today here in New Hampshire USA. My birds are enjoying all the treats I put out for them especially the mealworms for the bluebirds. And at 7:30 a.m. the 7 male wild turkeys went wandering through my back woods. They are a nuisance and I don’t feed them. I love that goose of yours and how she followed you up the ramp😊 Stay warm💕

I worry so much about the wildlife at this time of year also. I go out several times a day to feed them. The advice from the bird charities is that the peanut butter you give wild birds must be unsalted.Greetings from Wales

My brother used to love to feed the birds in the wintertime. He couldn't get out much the last couple of years of his life, so he wasn't able to feed them. He had a pair of red wing blackbirds that would come every year and build a nest. He would be so excited to see them every spring.
Something I have found that the birds love is cooked quinoa. My husband made me a ‘henge’ as he calls it to feed the birds in. It’s made of plastic covered wire netting on a frame of bits of hosepipe and canes. The small birds can fly in and out but the big birds can’t get through the mesh.
Located in California. We have year-round hummingbirds here. I have a family of 3 that have decided to stay this winter. Love the natural bird feeders! I plan to do this with the "grands." Thank you for such a wonderful winter garden update.

My mom fed the birds for years. Water too. When she had cancer and stayed with me, I set her up in my family room with huge windows and kept the bird stations well stocked so she could watch them all day. I regressed back to planting bird favorites, but I keep water out. I have dove but will plant for quail in the spring. I set up a nice spot for them adjacent the forest. I have Pinyon Jays that bury nuts in a rock pile and a pair of Ravens that raise their babies here plus they run off the local hawk. I enjoy their skirmishes when the hawk shows up, pretty dramatic aerial fights over my head. I want a deeper 4" bath for quail.,

We love to feed the birds too. We moved from Ontario to Nova Scotia over a year ago. We are still getting used to the variety of birds that come to our feeders. There are many similar birds, but no cardinals.
I am also the keeper of the feathery ones. We were dumped on twice this week, still snowing as of now. Spent the day filling and refilling the feeders. All the birds were in a feeding frenzy. Northern Cardinal pairs, juncos, Black capped chickadees, Blue jays, Wild finches (males are in their bright red dress now), Mourning doves love them to bits.
We have 4 bird feeders outside of our dining room window and I feed the birds every morning and watch them as I eat breakfast! There are usually about 13 different kinds of birds feeding! I love watching them!
Last week we had snow and 5F = -15C so my granddaughter, Ada and I made pinecone feeders and hung them on our pine trees. Our song birds need cover from the hawks and owls. This brought back a sweet memory of a very special moment I spent with my mom who was in hospice care at home. Mom and I were always feeding the birds and watched for hours as they darted around all the feeders we had in the garden and on the deck in front of our house. She was pretty close to dying but wanted to be outside for a little while, and there we watched fledglings leaving the nest under neath our porch roof, one by one. She was so delighted and so at peace as we spent this beautiful hour or so watching them spread their wings. I will never forget this brief but splendid time with my mom. Thank you for bringing back this special time.
I’m in London and my little birds are competing with squirrels magpies and pigeons. Hoping the bluetits and sparrows are getting some food in my neighbors gardens!
Loved watching this Kate as we love to feed the birds too! Lovely idea with the pine cone! We are plagued by herring gulls as we are near the sea but mostly enjoy watching out for the little ones!
My granddaughters and I made the pinecone feeders one time. They had so much fun. I hung the one I made in my back patio tree. When the girls left and my husband came home we went to the window to see the pinecone feeder. We looked out just in time to see the squirrel bite the string in half and run off with whe whole pinecone. Peanutbutter seeds and all 😂

Hi Kate~~~~It's always good to see and hear from you. We live in New Hampshire on the Vermont border in US and it's that cold here too. My favorite seasons are Spring and Fall..........Winter is way too cold and Summer is way too hot and humid. We also have a couple of other seasons besides the 4 "usual" ones. We have somewhere in February/March called Frost Heave Season, and then comes Mud Season [did you know that mud can take your vehicle to places where snow and ice can only dream of???] and THEN Spring..........after Spring comes Black Fly Season quickly followed by Mosquito Season and Summer. We have a saying here.........9 months of Winter and 3 months of very poor sledding. I really enjoyed watching you feed the birds. Thanks so much for sharing that with us. Blessings to you Kate.

Since moving to my little house, larger yard 7 years ago, I have struggled with to feed the birds don't feed the birds. If I feed the birds, I end up feeding the neighbourhood cats, hawks, ravens, owls and coyotes so hard no to feeding. Plenty of my neighbours feed the birds. However, I provide them with plenty of tree, bush and undergrowth covering for warm little homes. I am happy with that. 😊❤
beautiful birds, especially Miss Eileen! We feed & water the neighborhood "free range" kitties, they have homes, but are outdoor only, some sleep in a neighbor's workshop. We adopted one, with permission, and he couldn't be happier. Big, Long-haired, a mass of white fur mats, there are vet and groomer visits coming. We also have several bird feeders, and they are also busy, and such fun to watch! Our squirrel visitor, Miss Twitchy, hasn't been around, we think she's staying in the veg garden now, probably curled up staying warm.
I have always fed the birds wherever I have lived my whole life and I love to watch them. My grandma and my mum taught me as a child to do this and we always saved scraps, stale bread, bits of bacon rind any left over nuts at Christmas and so on. I feed the blackbirds some berries that I have collected and frozen earlier in the year (they love raspberries)...they dont seem to mind that they go a bit mushy when they have been frozen. I had never thought of peanut butter before but I shall try that. Finally I have the same problem with crows, magpies and starlings, they fly in 'mob handed' and devour everything but putting food nearer the house does seem to work. My mum always said that in winter birds die of thirst as well as hunger and so I do put a drink of water out for them as well...

A few years ago, I covered a block of wood with a mixture of bird seed and peanut butter, put a hook on the end and gave it to my elder bird-feeding neighbor. Her birds loved it and she was so happy to watch ‘her’ birds enjoy themselves. Your pine cone idea is great Kate! Thank you!
Lovely. Birds are so beautiful and Winter is hard. Our wind chill has been -30F. Now ice storm over most of Missouri. My friend who lives in the country near a lake had a yellow Cardinal the other day. I've never seen one in person. We have Eagles often around town on the Mississippi River.

Just lovely Kate, as ever. I love feeding the birds too - starlings, hooded crows, robins, thrushes, house sparrows and blackbirds - we had snow here in the Hebrides so have been happily in and out spreading peanut butter on fence posts and apples, oats and cheese on the snow! One starling thanks me by clucking like a chicken! They are all such a delight.

The problem we have with our feeders here in Texas are the squirrels. If we don't have a cover over the top of the feeder, they will come in and take all the food. Eileen following behind you was just the cutest site. Thank you for your continued inspiration.
I love birds. We didn't have much snow in December, but now, with a foot and a half and 9 F (-13C) temperature (we're having a cool blast as well), the birds are flocking to the bird table. I also get red squirrels, and yesterday the yard was full of wild turkey footprints in the snow. You've given me some ideas... thank you!
I loved)e watching your birds at the feeders. Here on the north section of Vancouver Island, Canada, we are in a fairly remote area and lots of wildlife. I had many feeders out on our property the first couple of years we lived here but found it was a fruitless effort as the bears kept getting in and would not only eat all the seeds, etc. but destroy the feeders in the process! We have a fence and an electric wire to keep the Elk away, but the bears just push it all down and seem not to notice any shock from the wire (It isn't a heavy shock, just enough to annoy the Elk, who will eat everything, and I do mean everything! We have to make sure all our fruit trees are picked in the Autumn, again, to keep the bear from getting it all. We don't mind sharing but they do not know about sharing so take it all if they can:-)

I can see the birds flying back and forth to the feeders while you are sewing. I really miss feeding the birds in my garden. I had been feeding them regularly, but then they were taken over by the squirrels, the deer, and finally bears. That was the end of that!
Love seeing you feed the birds, Kate. My husband and I feed the birds here, in Canada, as well. We’re warming up a bit, but still seeing -16 in B.C. We feed them twice a day, and started with little birds, then the larger doves came, and now we have nearly 40 quail on our deck each morning, looking in the patio doors to hurry us along. By mid-afternoon, our wee yard looks like a scene out of Alfred Hitchcock’s movie, ‘the birds’. Fun to watch them all enjoying themselves, though. Aileen is adorable! Stay warm!🥰
I've been feeding the birds with my dad my whole life & I use to make pinecone bird feeders like that with all the kids i use to mind over the years, it was always a big hit! P.S. i have a ceramic christmas tree ornament that looks exactly like the birds that landed on the pinecone after you hung it up. I got a chuckle out of that!😂

They are beautiful little birds with the black mask across their eyes & blue feathers.
We have gold finches & doves & Cardinals.

To get the the peanut butter into all the nook and crannies you could use a piping bag with a small tip
I live in Tennessee and if I run out of birdseed the birds are not opposed to cheap cat food that I sometimes throw out for them.

Our feeders also get quails, I love to watch the babies from summer joining the adults, we cane over 10 at a time.

Love the Bird Video so much and the pond. cabin and garden walk ways and especially showing the actual birds; as I am not allowed to feed birds from the balcony of my beautiful condo, which I do enjoy very much along with the big old Ash tree plunked right in front of my balcony, not the same as bird feeders right in front of your face. Hi Kate~~~~It's always good to see and hear from you. We live in New Hampshire on the Vermont border in US and it's that cold here too. My favorite seasons are Spring and Fall..........Winter is way too cold and Summer is way too hot and humid. We also have a couple of other seasons besides the 4 "usual" ones. We have somewhere in February/March called Frost Heave Season, and then comes Mud Season [did you know that mud can take your vehicle to places where snow and ice can only dream of???] and THEN Spring..........after Spring comes Black Fly Season quickly followed by Mosquito Season and Summer. We have a saying here.........9 months of Winter and 3 months of very poor sledding. I really enjoyed watching you feed the birds. Thanks so much for sharing that with us. Blessings to you Kate.

Hello Kate, this is a lovely video, thank you for sharing, you are very generous in this. I love birds and all outside life. Since moving to my little house, larger yard 7 years ago, I have struggled with to feed the birds don't feed the birds. If I feed the birds, I end up feeding the neighbourhood cats, hawks, ravens, owls and coyotes so hard no to feeding. Plenty of my neighbours feed the birds. However, I provide them with plenty of tree, bush and undergrowth covering for warm little homes. I am happy with that. 😊❤
beautiful birds, especially Miss Eileen! We feed & water the neighborhood "free range" kitties, they have homes, but are outdoor only, some sleep in a neighbor's workshop. We adopted one, with permission, and he couldn't be happier. Big, Long-haired, a mass of white fur mats, there are vet and groomer visits coming. We also have several bird feeders, and they are also busy, and such fun to watch! Our squirrel visitor, Miss Twitchy, hasn't been around, we think she's staying in the veg garden now, probably curled up staying warm.

I have always fed the birds wherever I have lived my whole life and I love to watch them. My grandma and my mum taught me as a child to do this and we always saved scraps, stale bread, bits of bacon rind any left over nuts at Christmas and so on. I feed the blackbirds some berries that I have collected and frozen earlier in the year (they love raspberries)...they dont seem to mind that they go a bit mushy when they have been frozen. I had never thought of peanut butter before but I shall try that. Finally I have the same problem with crows, magpies and starlings, they fly in 'mob handed' and devour everything but putting food nearer the house does seem to work. My mum always said that in winter birds die of thirst as well as hunger and so I do put a drink of water out for them as well...

A few years ago, I covered a block of wood with a mixture of bird seed and peanut butter, put a hook on the end and gave it to my elder bird-feeding neighbor. Her birds loved it and she was so happy to watch ‘her’ birds enjoy themselves. Your pine cone idea is great Kate! Thank you!

Lovely. Birds are so beautiful and Winter is hard. Our wind chill has been -30F. Now ice storm over most of Missouri. My friend who lives in the country near a lake had a yellow Cardinal the other day. I've never seen one in person. We have Eagles often around town on the Mississippi River.

Just lovely Kate, as ever. I love feeding the birds too - starlings, hooded crows, robins, thrushes, house sparrows and blackbirds - we had snow here in the Hebrides so have been happily in and out spreading peanut butter on fence posts and apples, oats and cheese on the snow! One starling thanks me by clucking like a chicken! They are all such a delight.

The problem we have with our feeders here in Texas are the squirrels. If we don't have a cover over the top of the feeder, they will come in and take all the food. Eileen following behind you was just the cutest site. Thank you for your continued inspiration.
I love birds. We didn't have much snow in December, but now, with a foot and a half and 9 F (-13C) temperature (we're having a cool blast as well), the birds are flocking to the bird table. I also get red squirrels, and yesterday the yard was full of wild turkey footprints in the snow. You've given me some ideas... thank you!
I loved)e watching your birds at the feeders. Here on the north section of Vancouver Island, Canada, we are in a fairly remote area and lots of wildlife. I had many feeders out on our property the first couple of years we lived here but found it was a fruitless effort as the bears kept getting in and would not only eat all the seeds, etc. but destroy the feeders in the process! We have a fence and an electric wire to keep the Elk away, but the bears just push it all down and seem not to notice any shock from the wire (It isn't a heavy shock, just enough to annoy the Elk, who will eat everything, and I do mean everything! We have to make sure all our fruit trees are picked in the Autumn, again, to keep the bear from getting it all. We don't mind sharing but they do not know about sharing so take it all if they can:-)

I can see the birds flying back and forth to the feeders while you are sewing. I really miss feeding the birds in my garden. I had been feeding them regularly, but then they were taken over by the squirrels, the deer, and finally bears. That was the end of that!
The winter garden looks amazing. There are more open areas for safe passages and the aerial shots are beautiful. What a wonderful place to call home.

Love seeing you feed the birds, Kate. My husband and I feed the birds here, in Canada, as well. We’re warming up a bit, but still seeing -16 in B.C. We feed them twice a day, and started with little birds, then the larger doves came, and now we have nearly 40 quail on our deck each morning, looking in the patio doors to hurry us along. By mid-afternoon, our wee yard looks like a scene out of Alfred Hitchcock’s movie, ‘the birds’. Fun to watch them all enjoying themselves, though. Aileen is adorable! Stay warm!🥰

I've been feeding the birds with my dad my whole life & I use to make pinecone bird feeders like that with all the kids i use to mind over the years, it was always a big hit! P.S. i have a ceramic christmas tree ornament that looks exactly like the birds that landed on the pinecone after you hung it up. I got a chuckle out of that!😂
