For those whom do not see him/herself in any of the 4 common categories to join UN described in this video, I share my story in which I joined the UN by commonly applying in the programme website page for a normal vacancy (Programme Assistant at UNDP-BR) and from there I made my way up into the organization. At the time I was 34 and I had never worked for anything remotely related to the UN before. Once I was inside, I realized that many people (nationals and foreign) have joined the UN in a very similar way as I did based on his/her previous experiences. I know it is weird when you are on the outside but this way of joining the organization is way more common than expected. It might take some time (2 to 3 months) but is possible such as in any other organization or company. I hope I have helped.
Thank you for this..i have been trying from my side..and i have been working with the french ministry for a while now. No success yet. I ll keep going though. Good luck to you.
Honestly, THANK YOU. You probably saved me hours of research just to understand the structure of jobs in the UN for people who want to get started. Thank you!
Such a breath of fresh air from all the nonsense in YT these days. Highly underrated channel, a concise presentation for a topic that you could probably go on for hours. I'm currently into consulting but have always wanted to make an impact, so this information definitely helps. I wouldn't have thought that internships had such a wide range of participant's ages (aka when you said "much older"). In your experience, do you HAVE to start at an early age to have a long-term career at the UN? Subscribed!
Wow, you effortlessly summarised the UN in just afew words. This is much easier for an applicant to understand than reading through the detailed and confusing info written on the UN website.I wish I had this info 8 years ago when I was very passionate to work at the UN.
I’m UN volunteer for 3 years the living allowance is good and is mostly fair money to live with e.g. in NY they pay 4K in Bangkok they pay 2.5K. When you enter you receive entry lump sum of 4000$ and so on exit allowance. They pay for your tickets and everything. Also they cover health insurance. For the internship it’s not always the case to no be paid. Because in Bangkok I notice interns are paid. If you have any questions regarding UN volunteer I will answer
Heyyyy, sorry to bother you on such a stupid question as it isn't directly related to the topic itself but being such an experienced person can you suggest some of the things that I should pay my attention to if I want to work for UN in future or some early initiatives that I should take currently. Also being from a socials background (in my early stage of studying rn) what are some recommended committees and jobs for me in UN
Heyy can u plz provide me with a roadmap how can i volunteer as a foreigner and how can i get job etc any other oppurtunities that u know i would be really grateful if u help me out and i have sociology and social work background

Hi, first of all thank you for this video it is really helpful and easy to refer to. I have a request , can you please make a brief explanation video about UNODC . It would be a great help .!
Really helpful and timely! If you could do a few more on this subject that would be great. For example if you can't currently find any way to directly get your foot into the UN door, are there other ways or things you can do that will help you when the opportunity does come up? e.g. what types of grassroots causes could you be involved in before the UN; conferences/events that will help you find the right people to network with etc. Thanks!
@@HippyInASuit1 I am a Mozambican ,my industry is Aviation since 2018, and i would like to join UN now ,but not in my country, rather in English-speaking nations..can you help me?

This was so resourceful and timely. It has liteally saved me hours I would've invested in online research. Thank you so much for this insightful information.
Thanks for uploading this essential video on how to get in into UN. Why UN does not consider government experience holder for the relevant positions? I am going to follow the new entry points you mentioned. Thank you.
a thousand thanks for your tremendous work! It more than detailed and easy-to-understand💜🙏 p.s. currently I'm an ESC-volunteer, but I feel that I'm able to give more from my side to make this world the better place🌏🙌
First of all thank you for such an important and pioneering information briefly . Could you please send me the link of online certification programs conducted by United nations organization. Thanks with Regards in advance.
I am not sure the UN offers certification per se but you can check out the following for online learning content from the UN www.unsdglearn.org/ unccelearn.org/
Here are the generic tips to get a job in the UN (Nairobi - the largest UN complex) as an expat aspirant: (1a) You must be white; or (1b) a person of color, but coming from a well represented member state of the UN. (2) You must be "one of them" in that department, or office you want to be in. (3) You must be super, then all else won't matter. As in superrrr qualified to be considered! Again this is for expat aspirant unless you are competing for jobs that are preferably to be filled by local hires. Walk around UN Nairobi complex and you'll see those who are in positions and even young interns and volunteers are dominantly either 1a or, 1b. And yet to be confirmed, (4) if having powerful connections inside the UN would increase your chances to get the job.
Informative and usefull for those who want to join UN, and I am the one who wish to Join UN as I have completed my Graduation in Business Administration with HR specialization and have Don International Organization Management from Geneva University and International Humanitarian Law from leiden University and Project Management from Institute of Project Management Australia i am trying my best to get YPP or JPO but no responses from the HR Body I would like you to help me in this regards...
Thank you for your insights. It's been beneficial! 😊 I plan to apply for a UN internship, right now I am navigating the process, and finding the best angle. I would really appreciate your honest opinion on 2 things I got stuck on: 1) I have a bachelor's in cultural anthropology from years back. I am doing my master's in environmental science right now. In this case, does the internship have to be related to my current environmental studies, or does it make sense to apply for the ones in the social science/humanitarian space pertaining to my previous bachelor's as well? I want to connect both of these perspectives in my career in the future. 2) I have plenty of international working experience (working in the Middle East as a cabin crew for Emirates, assisting persons with disabilities in the UK, working in HR in Malta,...), mainly in customer and client-facing roles. But I am lacking on volunteering experience. Watching the journeys of others who got internships at the UN, made me doubt if it is possible to get into without a volunteering experience. Of course, I can build this experience, but it will not happen overnight. Does it even make sense to apply now and then again in the future once I am experienced (will the same hiring manager consider my application again)? Please share your opinion and experience. Thank you! 🙏
I will take this question over if you don’t mind: 1. Your degree does not have to be related to the internship itself UNLESS it says they are looking for specific areas in the Application Form. 2. You do not need any volunteering experience, but especially in the UN in New York it is highly competitive therefore it is sometimes of advantage. + You can apply as often as you like no one will judge you or remember you. Eagerness pays off most of the time!

Hi! Great video. I wanted to ask you about the financial aspect of the internship. As you said, that they aren't paid. So, my question is ¿is there any way that for the interns to have a secondary half time job to provide for themselves? or if you could comment on how do they usually manage to cover their expenses (loans, savings, etc) that would be helpful. Thank you
as an intern you work full-time (40h/week) you will have to use your savings or do weekend shifts. It is very difficult for anyone who does not have any financial support. + please do not expect to get a contract after the internship because that almost never happens. Once you are done with your internship you have to wait 6 months to apply on any fixed position of your choice. There are some internships in the UN where they do pay you 500/1000/month but most of the ones I know of are in Europe.
