    Some great advice in there mate, keep up the good work. An old boy I worked with years ago would always say "every day is a different day" and as I finish doing just over 50 years in the trade I think how right he was. The hardest thing for me over all that time has been adapting to new materials, new tools and the methods needed to use them. When I started on the long road it was sand/cement and the old grey Sirapite, there were no beads or whisks, just wooden rules, a stick and bucket and one trowel for everything lol. I've enjoyed my time in the trade and because I've paced myself for most of it I have no plastering related health problems, as I approach the big 70 I can still go out and do a bit. Be sensible about what you do and how you go about it and you to could have a long career in the game. Happy spreading guys and lots of luck to you all ... Mick

    I agree with every word, done site work for shit meterage for years all it does is knacker yourself up and your van. Ive been doing private work for the last 10 years and unless ive obviously got a big ceiling or big walls to put on the most I use in a day is 2-4 bags. Theres alot of prep involved in domestics sheeting up, taking off switches, taking down lights, taking rads off and knowing your backgrounds to not get caught out.

    Been in the plastering and building trade since 1977, i'v just turned 64 and still at it, but what you are saying is bang on the button, arm pains, leg pain not to mention back pain. It's all manual work no way round it, so as you say work to suit yourself you have nothing to prove to any one, if it takes longer so what, so long as end result is good. Came across your channel by chance and i have to say the advice you give is 100 per cent and put across in a calm and relaxed manner, keep it up as it will help those coming into the trade to ignore the shite they are fed,

    Great video buddy , totally agree with all you have said , and I wish I was more like you when I was your age , 20 years also a plasterer. . But I was a fool , worked far too hard in my twenties , ( 2 x 50 meter sets of Sirapite a day ) tried keeping it up in my thirties , ( 3 sets of multi finish a day ), knackered by the time I was forty ( which is still a young age ) Left the trade at 42 , now at 61 I'm arthritic all over , knees have fluid on them all the time and I have a heart condition . But I loved being a plasterer at the time , the job satisfaction for me was huge , just wish I paced myself instead of chasing the money .

    Hi pal good advice there,I've been plasterering 25 years and I've done site work etc. It's not for me anymore.I prefer smaller private jobs where I do the whole thing ie plastering,joinery, tilling painting etc. It's a lot easier than banging plaster on day in day out.I can get the same money for a ceiling repair after a leak and taking time to leave it spotless cleaning wise than plastering a medium size room on site so it makes sense.
    Also a one trick pony gets worn out quicker ,they can keep there ten bags a day lol 😂A lot of site plasterers can't do private work to a standard that keeps the work coming in. It's also about cleanliness and good customer relations and been professional.
    Not trailing plaster round on ya boots swearing while skimming on board all day.And been spoon fed the work for peanuts

      I’m a reasonably quick plasterer. I can hold my own on price on new builds, but do a fair bit of domestic now too. Some plasterers who I work with think I’m fast, but I know lads who would consider me slow. There’s always gonna be people out there capable of doing the seemingly impossible, point being, if your leaving a good job, working how you want, and earning a living your happy with, your winning, so never let anyone knock your confidence, most of them guys are under 40, and they won’t be doing it forever

  • @user-Wojciech
    @user-Wojciech 2 роки тому +6

    I'd love to be able to put on a full 2 bag mix before it starts getting hard without the use of a retarder, but I can't crack it. I don't think I'm that slow, but multifinish goes off a bit too quick for my liking when I do ceilings/big walls that need 2 bags. I hate spreading plaster that isn't soft anymore and remixing half way through a set isn't ideal. Got no choice but to use eazymix.

    • @dp7580
      @dp7580 2 роки тому +2

      @@user-Wojciech Maybe you're taking longer than you think putting on. Which shouldn't make you want to rush. There's a balance between not messing with it too much but applying it neat. You don't need to race like a maniac to put on quick. It's more about technique to apply flat, getting a nice long spread and moving on.
      I also start from the bottom. In one spread I get head height (6ft 4"). My trowel is 16" so I'm getting a decent amount on one stroke. Go up, back down, back up and move on. Steady pace, no looking for a finish yet. Don't need to overlap your strokes too much or your just making it uneven. Most rooms I only need to bring the ceiling line down 2ft so 2/4 hawk fulls will do the tops of a wall.
      You should start from the top left. But if you're not dropping it down the wall then I find your doing longer spreads, less messing by doing bottoms first.
      Just practice being efficient rather than racing. You'll get there

    How ya Stu.... littlegarbie from Dublin here. Thought I'd drop you a message to say fairballs to ya. Ive watched a few of your videos now and in many ways we're different plasterer but in alot more we're very alike. Whoever broke you into this knackers game, trained you well. The 2 old timers that trained me use to laugh at me because I wanted to be like them. I am now after 25years of it (never gonna be as good as them mind you) but they must have seen some sort of passion in me because they never made it easy and seriously looked after me at the same time. One of them fucked of and died on me the bollox and the other is still on the trowel and I mean today. They looked after me, its my time to look after them. But looking at your work, listening to your talk and attitude towards the game.... fuck sake, they could've trained you an all🤣... Anyway hats off to ya pal, you know your stuff. Keep pasting that knowledge on because its the right type of knowledge, rare and priceless. Here in Ireland it feels like they're trying to kill the trade.... until they need the likes of us🙄 PS.... the 2 old timers im talking about is my father and uncle, who were trained by a real plasterer, their own father🤣🤣🤣

    this is exactly how i work, 810 start 3 o’clock i’m out the door, prep and gauge, or set up day before and two mixes, all the builders lads moan i’m “part time” while they have two 40 min breaks and day, spend one hour of their day at the merchants, i gauge then 15 min break then mix again, then i’m out the house like a bat out of hell

      I do that too. Also I snort cream of tartar, it helps slow the stuff down so I can get more on. 1 line per bag

    Good vid. Been at it 20 years now and as a massive stereotype plasterers are thick as shit, the lowest intelligence life form in the trade except for scaffolders. Always amuses me hearing the idiots yapping on about how much they’ve put on for £2-£3 a metre. Brain dead attitude. Nice to see some common sense and pride for a change.

    Focus on keeping it flat and tidy.. So many start to rush then leave it like shit then on hot days can always get caught out

      hi Mateus, I think the bags of browning and skimming were 50 kilo, I was a 15 year old apprentice plasterer, I was lucky I worked with a plasterer and a labourer so I was straight on the trowel from day 1, first week bored stiff just putting it on and off the handboard until I could cut it without dropping anything, 2 nd week the dreaded cuboards, and while I was getting stressed with plaster all over floor, I was told to give Les our labourer a hand to off load an artic half full of 8 stone bags of browning and skimming I was 5ft 10 and 9 stone, the bags were 8 stone, that was one massive shock to the real world☹☹☹

    Call backs are costly, not as costly as injury! Real Plasterers are able to cover all aspects, skimmers are not plasterers!

    Why is it that when I get all these plastering vids all I ever see is skimming work .
    What about -
    Render ( traditional)
    K - rend
    Acrylic render
    Pebble dash ( rare )
    Hardwall works
    Coving
    Dry lining
    Lath and plaster works
    Lime works
    Floor Screeding.
    Where are these vids 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
