Ok this Happened today, my 97-year-old mother passed away on Sunday and we were trying to clean out around her chair. She had one of those tins that you get popcorn in at christmas and my sister would just pitch it straight out, so I'm looking through it per your recommendation. "Don't just pitch it look through it" there were some envelopes in there and there was actually a $1000. In one of those envelopes! we needed it so bad and I'm so thankful God put it In there 4 years ago for us to find it today! Thank you for your advice. I don't usually ever throw anything out without looking, but my sister sure does! so thank you. Listen to this lady. She is right! It literally pays 💵💲💲!
I am so sorry to hear about your Mom... but am glad that a simple tip brought a discovery to make things easier for your family at this difficult time. Sending you hugs and healing thoughts. xoxox
While purging my craft room I found A TON of stuff that needed to go. I knew of some folks I thought could benefit from them. One friend was looking for beading stuff but only of a certain size. One friend wanted Washi tape. One friend said she'd take anything I wanted to get rid of (okay, friend, you asked) and anything she didn't want she'd take to the library where she works. It was great to know things were going to be used.
So true. About the passive purging, that's what worries me on Hoarders or Hoarding Buried Alive...how they tell the clients to just let go of stuff without looking through it. I could never do that.
It really is! I have a few members that still do it.... I just say thank you - and take it straight to donation!!!! Unless it's something really good! LOL
Actually i would call it "item renting" since you place conditions on how the items are re-homed. I am a recovering hoarder and things going to waste really is a set back for me. I know there are many ethical issues around thift stores but i don't make it a requirement of a "perfect place" to give my item away. I just make an effort once to creatively take it to someone who could potentially use it or even just consider it before it is donated or discarded. For example, i know where there are congregations of homeless women, so when i was downsizing from plus size which we all know is expensive AF! I put together various backpacks, bags and travel suitcases of those clothes combined with some essential hygiene items i didn't like/want/found for free like hotel soap and perhaps a few other odds and ends i stumbled on that might seem helpful. I would select one female out kf the community there to speak with and ask her to split it up equally and that i entrust her to do so. Within 5 minutes, all of the ladies would swoop in with at least 3 to 5 quality outfits that were season appropriate, many being the larger ladies I'm sure who had a harder time finding clothes in their size, much less cute and potentially used for interviews. Also, the antique dealer is a great place to downsize if you have things that you inherited and no one in the family has an interest in it. Bonus for getting some extra cash for your efforts and giving a quirky part of history another chance. Also, many nursing homes appreciate seasonal and holiday decor. My mom and i cut down about 90% of the Christmas and Thanksgiving stuff by offering it to our local nursing home. They were thrilled to have it available to bring joy to their residents. Also, theater departments will take nearly anything, i mean ANYTHING! Some items that are repairable that are needed for their program might be delegated to a student or assistant to refurbish/repurpose for their needs. There's a billion and 1 ways theaters use old curtains, left over paint/construction materials, old clothes in a wide variety of sizes (usually don't need modern ones but could be a fun new home for grandma's old house coat) craft materials, tools, industrial supplies, you name it!! Just make sure to call the department administrator to see what holes they lack in their collection. Could be an awesome way to also put some old treasures to work and enjoy seeing them in production. Also, remember that metal items can be taken to scrap yards and given cash. Metals are going for a good price right now due to the new tarriffs and logistical international nightmare covid threw a wrench into. If you really want to go on a deep dive, you can put up curb alerts on craigs list, fb market place, free cycle or see if there is an earth ship community in case you have things that would be difficult to discard like old tires. Just think creatively if it keeps you motivated to keep going. It doesn't have to depend solely on people you know, the thrift store or the trash. In certain ways, i have improved by switching my acquisition towards consumable items. Sure, 6 costco sized bundles of papertowels, 10 containers of laundry soap, 8 packs of disposable dishes, 6 bags of cat litter, 4 large boxes of trash bags, 4 gallons of paint with extra rollers/brushes/stir sticks, thousands of nails/hooks/zip ties/bolts/command strips/velco/duct tape/bolts/screws, 8 spare led light bulbs, 5 extra surge protectors, chargers by the handful, 3 spare routers, 10 40 gallon storage totes of non-perishable food, never throwing out medicine of any kind (unless certain is spoiled) and 30 rechargable batteries can be overwhelming. However, given enough time, these items will decrease in volume while giving me a sense of a "practical savings account " as global prices have increased, reducing my need to go to stores and potentially saving money or at least less pressure to acquire more. I was a fashion hoarder for the longest time which just got to be to difficult because it's harder to part from something that you find aesthetically pleasing but not the size you currently are or been able to use because of the quantity of clothing
@@colleenshaw1607 I’m sorry if my comment was triggering. That was not my intention. We donate to a local thrift store that benefits a woman’s shelter. I understand what you mean by struggling with things that might be wasted. Both of my parents were children of the depression (my dad was very organized in how he kept things, and he kept a lot) so if I cannot recycle something it is frustrating as to how best responsibility dispose of it.
Yes please check all boxes that haven't been checked. My husband was a mover and was packing for a client who's father had passed. He was told to throw away the shoe boxes. My husband always check and thank goodness he did. One box had $9,000 in it. The family were shocked! They thanked him.😀
I have a "roll call" I go through when purging. I first take a picture of the item to send my daughters to see if any of them want the item, then I ask friends, followed by charity. I am a big believer in keeping things out of landfills, so I'm a huge recycler.
I’m still catching up on all your videos, this is my fave video so far! Love that you talk about boundaries and ASKing before you pass things on. I really get stressed when people give me stuff I don’t need. I (+ my hubby) just want to be in control of what I have in the house, after all it is our home! I’m guilty of the pileup, Especially during the pandemic, it’s been hard to go to the tip and charity shops aren’t back to normal yet but I’ve been using Facebook market place to let people collect free items. It just takes a lot longer!
I've not been purging as regularly as usual... and I've been crafting MORE. So my home is starting to look cluttered. I need to go through and get rid of stuff again! By the way.... Your Alice in Wonderland books are AMAZING!!!
🙋🏻♀️Hi Norrine, This another good video. I really enjoyed your acting scenes 😆, great job. Everything you mentioned made total sense, smart advice. THANK YOU!!! ❤️
I usually bring stuff that i can't throw away to work with me and put it in the break room with a note to my coworkers to take what they want. Everything that is left after a week, I trash.
Great idea about being sure what is in the boxes being purged. I once grave away a box of items that I meant to keep. Anniversary gifts from my husband, and other gives from my children. Not replaceable. Even my parents wedding rings. And photos. Thanks goodness I did get the rings back but everything else was gone. Oh and to top it off one of the photos was my wedding photo. So be sure to check thoes boxes before giving them away.
I loved this video, too. You did a great Edith Bunker! I thought that was cute! I'm trying to figure out which one I would be. I'm definitely not the over purger. Thank you!!💞💞
I personally like when people are getting rid of things and pass them my way. I never feel obligated to keep the things but I do like going through the things in case there is something I want. What I don’t want goes immediately to the thrift store.
Norrine, You are excellent! You're speaking on things I've never heard organisers talk about. Thank you!😉 One thing I do is schedule regular donations. I aim for once a month, but it can be overwhelming if I wait. Sometimes I take items back from the donation pile if it sits too long. To be more effective, I schedule pickups about every other week.
Passive purger here! I get stressed about purging, but since I moved into our poor little abused home with very little storage space, I have no choice! I've already purged my closets, but my craft room! Ugh! We have to renovate every single part of this home and I need the boxes of stuff gone to get ready for flooring (after we fix the plumbing and electrical)! So, thanks for the inspiration!
My mom is such a minimalist, she's always bringing my grandma's old clothes. "Here's some orthopedic Reebok sneakers, your kids might want. If not you can throw them out". She could've just thrown them out lol.
Also, don't forget your local community theater or high school drama department. These organizations usually need a wide variety of items that most places won't take. Anything from fabric, crafting materials, decor, tools, furniture, weird antiques etc. Call them and get the OK. Many times they might offer pick up for large items. The donations allow them to shift their budgets that are already razor thin into increasing the quality of their production and possibly even expand their program/services
@@TheCraftyOrganizer exactly. Many theater departments run on tight budgets and can be very helpful to have those props, costumes, sets and supplies be provided by the community. Awesome tips. My mom gives me lots of things...but she has started asking first. 😁 My kids are the ones telling me to keep certain things for them...I started a box for the one that turned 18 in August...just a little starter pack that I am sure we will add more to as we go.

😂😆😂 Could you hear it?!?!? LOL
Call the clutter fairy, I need your help. I am getting so stressed from moving that I am having panic attacks and migraines. Do you work with anyone in the state of Michigan? Thank you. Chris
Oh, Chris - I don't have anyone in Michigan. E-mail me some pics of what you are dealing with.... I will see what suggestions I can make.

My husband always says sell. It I tell him I don’t have the time nor do I want a stranger come into to my house
😁
Oops I am so guilty of this but my friends and family have learned to say no!
Ha ha! Good for them!!!! It's sweet of you to try and find a loving home for your things.... think of the excitement the person who BUYS your items at a thrift-store will feel instead. ;)
Regrettably, I have OVERPURGED...😢
OH NO!!!! What do you regret getting rid of?
Call Clutter Fairy I mistakenly threw out some important documents & hard to find craft supplies.
:( Yikes! So sorry that happened to you.
Never over purge before a pandemic! Lesson learned. The stuff I have had to replace cost me much more than I paid the first time!
;)
