Outstanding podcast! I use standard sauna and/or cold therapy about 3-4 times per week. Good to know that my rationale and practice are supported by this fine group of people. Am also strongly considering some training with Oxygen Advantage -- for myself and my wife!

      Hi @normbrekke2774,
Just saw your comment. Sauna and cold therapy are hugely beneficial for health.
You would be welcome on any OA course.

I'm glad to learn that keeping my hands off the water is not cheating (20'30'') and I'll still have all the benefits of the cold exposure anyway. My hands are really my weak point during and after cold exposure. If I keep my hands in the water they generally take a very long time after the bath to warm again (at least 1 hour). Of course I could have a sauna session or do a stationnary bike workout to warm them up faster but in that case some of the cold bath benefits will be probably lost. I suspect that what Andrew Huberman said (in his presentation about cold exposure) about the importance to have the feet, the face and the hand in the water was referring to these studies showing that just putting hands or feet in cold water (4° C) is sufficient to induce brown fat activation.
Thanks to susanna to precise this important detail about hands 👏👏. Now, I take cold baths for 3 minutes in a water around 2°C (35°F) and not having to put my hands anymore in the water is quite a relief.

It's an incredibly interesting subject and we are seeing ice baths being used by athletes all over the world so it's only going to grow.

❄️💯❄️ thanks for all the great info. I have been taking ice cold showers here in Chicago thru winter for a couple years now and it has really helped with my running and endurance training recovery. I look forward to swimmimg cold in the future.

I’m assuming she means 15 Celsius as the cap for water temp??

I have a distant memory - from physiology class in late 1970s - that a brown fat study (on rodents subjected to cold) showed that the shivering subjects were keeping their core temp higher than the non-shivering ones….
And the non-shivering rodents were in fact (surprisingly) the colder ones?

I swim for 8-10 minutes in 7-9°C seawater BUT I wear gloves and a swim hat - will I still get the benefits? - without the gloves the pain into my wrist/forearms would force me to abort a lot earlier. On exit my skin is a deep red and I shiver pretty hard afterwards (more so than others imho)

You seem to be doing very well @drdecco1,
If you need the hat and gloves to go longer, if you feel the extra time is beneficial and as long as you are not pushing yourself to unhealthy amounts of time in the water, you seem to be at a good level.

Would say that when you start to feel ‘warm’ and ‘comfortable’ in the water, its time to get out.

Can i attain results in a very cool shower for 90 seconds, 7 times a week?

      Hi Jerry,
Not sure how the results would compare to cold water immersion, but you can still see great health benefits from taking cold showers.
