This song was recorded on first take. One of the most commercially successful songs ever. Astrud had never sung professionally prior to the recording - she literally was a shower singer. It rocketed her to instant (and may I say immortal) international star status. Ironically she was quite shy which imo shows in her stage presence. Ironically it makes her even more aloof and sexy...

No one has ever been so enchanting singing that song. Her seeming a little shy just amplifies her charm. (And it doesn't hurt that she was a sweet, warm voice with perfect pitch and phrasing.) The words depict a 2nd person narration, but nobody but nobody could BE the girl from Ipanema more than Astrud Gilberto. She embodies that girl by the way she walks and holds herself and sings - all the mannerisms you'd expect in that girl on the beach. Astrud certainly makes me go ahhhh....

While Helô inspired the song, it was another Carioca who carried it beyond Rio. Astrud Gilberto was the wife of singing star João Gilberto when she entered an NYC studio in March 1963. João and Jobim were making a record with tenor saxman Stan Getz. The idea of cutting a verse on “Ipanema” in English came up, and Astrud was the only one of the Brazilians who spoke more than phrasebook English.
Astrud’s child-like vocal, devoid of vibrato and singerly mannerisms, was the perfect foil for her husband’s soft bumblebee voice. Jobim tinkled piano. Getz blew a creamy smooth tenor. Four minutes of magic went to tape.
A year later, the song was casting its quiet spell of sea and sand on the charts, washing past the Beatles’ “I Want To Hold Your Hand.” It peaked in mid-June at No. 5, selling over two million copies.
“The Girl From Ipanema” went on to become the second-most recorded popular song in history, behind “Yesterday.” Covered by an A-Z gamut of performers.

It can seem kind of lame and pop-ish on a first listen. But listen again, realize it's not about the girl but about the narrator/observer, and the rich, deep emotion he feels, the painful longing for the thing(even if it's just a girl) he never really had and never will - it really captures "saudade" perfectly

Astrud is absolutely spell-binding. Her glorious voice, combined with her almost other-worldly beauty... OMG, she stole my heart... from the very first time I saw this clip so, so many years ago... *sigh*
    I love you, Astrud...

She was actually not supposed to sing that day in the studio....Jauao was to provide the lyrics but Astrud accompanied him to the studio and both Getz and Gilberto decided she should do a cut. The rest is history. The album contains both his and her versions.

I watched this video many times but it took me several years before I noticed that the guy playing vibraphone at far right, I believe is the young Gary Burton.
I'll never forget when a lady friend of mine that worked at a local jazz station here in Portland Oregon, invited me into the studio one night. I couldn't help but notice all of the old rare vinyl Jazz records, a lot on The Verve and Blue Note label. Because the station management was converting and phasing out all of their old vinyl to be replaced by new CDs, as this was back around the year 2000, I believe 20 years ago.
I found this beautiful Blue Note vinyl LP in the shelves that was recorded live in New York City. It was Astrud Gilberto, backed by Stan Getz doing some rare live numbers.
So I had to put it on the turntable and as I queued up I'm not sure if it was The Girl From Ipanema, as it might have been Corcovado.
The phone lines just began to light up as soon as the number started, [as I warned my lady friend - be ready because the phones are going to ring off the hooks.]
This bossa nova music is so classic and so timeless still today, as no one can deny it.
