Pim Jacobs and Astrud Gilberto - Bossa Nova conquering the Netherlands 1962

- Опубліковано 4 вер 2024
- In 1962 (Trio) Pim Jacobs (piano), Wim Overgaauw (guitar) and Ruud Jacobs (double bass), invited Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto and drummer Dom Um Romão and Dutch tenor saxophone player Ruud Brink, for a musical TV Show called "Dzjes Zien". Which dedicaded a program to Bossa Nova.
I wasn't even born yet, but for shure this TV Show on Bossa Nova conquered a lot of hearts of its listners.
Years later as a kid, for the first time I "consciously" heard GETZ/GILBERTO playing on my fathers record player. I fell in love with this music . . . and Astrud. Her voice. Her accent. And above all this amazing guitar by João Gilberto.
Never changed! Never parted me.
E do danado do samba, nunca me separei! (from Samba da minha terra)
And the darn samba, never separated from me!
Songs that where played on the show:
Meditation 2:44
It might as well be spring 5:25
The telephone Song 8:46
Only trust your heart 10:18
Corcovado/Quiet nights of quiet stars 12:20
The girl from Ipanema 14:19

R I P Astrud, thank you for your soothing & beautiful voice 🙏🏻
My first crush as a young boy. I will never forget her. ❤ God bless her.
I didn’t think it was possible that I could love Astrud Gilberto even more, yet, here we are. Thank you, Astrud.
Me as well, Brother.... she's the living end.
Wunderschöne Musikers, Bravíssimo!
God bless you Astrud. You were unique with childlike innocence. May you rest in peace forever.
Rest in peace. Thank you for everything, Astrud!
Thank you Astrud. You brought Bossa Nova to the USA. Such a beautiful women inside and out.
I’m certain Astrud is singing a heavenly Bosa Nova. Her vocalization is soooo smooth and flowing - it takes me to a peaceful, tranquil, and completely relaxed place with infinite calm; like a soft, cool breeze. As with any truly talented artist, she sings effortlessly and with such ease. Add to that her natural beauty and innocent nature- I was in love! God bless you Astrud. You soothe my soul !
Tranquilizingand peaceful is the exact the right word for this music.
Pim Jacobs (1934-1996) was a jazz pianist and TV-host from the Netherlands. With shows like this he brought Jazz to the people. In 1962 he had just married the dutch jazz singer Rita Reys (1924-2013), who would rise to international fame in the 1960's and 1970's. I owe him a lot, because he introduced me to jazz when I was still in my teens.
France, Sweden, Netherlands, Germany appreciated Jazz in the late 50s early 60s in a way the U.S. just Didn't
He and his quintet performed on the soundtrack for the 1958 short, "Glass" (which won an Academy Award as "Best Documentary Short Subject").

Hello, maybe you can clear up an issue I commented on above:
Superb recording (Phillips equipment?) but I'm not sure if the date is right. The stories relate how she was a last minute choice in-studio to do the English version of Ipanema ~ in 1964.
[Here she is not with Getz, though he is mention by Pim. (Later Getz was reported to have been dismissive but also abusive.)]
This was recorded in July 1965 (and telecast the following October), when Astrud was in Holland for one day, during which she appeared on Pim's weekly program {"SEE JAZZ"}, and was in the U.S. the next day.
Her voice is so clean and uncorrupted by modern trends.
❤️👍
Timeless… gorgeous… wonderful… perfect
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
My second favorite Bossa Nova Jazz and Samba songstress, Lady Astrud Gilberto. ❤
RIP Lady Astrud in The Most Highest Heaven singing along with Lady Sassie Sarah Lois Vaughan & The Heavenly Choir.

❤❤❤❤❤❤
Just learned Astrud passed away one week ago at age 83. She had such a beautiful voice and wrote such beautiful songs. RIP.
What a lovely voice. It is a voice to fall in love inmediately as I did years back and continue listening her music .
Such a beautiful woman. My breath always catches when I see her. And her voice commands the notes
The best ever recorded on earth,,,Goodness God
Where these songs play anxiety cannot exist.
"When I hear Astrud, jasmine fills the air"-Donovan Leitch.
Pure perfection. Buttery, velvety vocals from Astrud, and subtle instrumentation from the rest of the band.
The success of Gilberto's vocal work on the song "The Girl from Ipanema" quickly turned her into a jazz star, and soon she started recording solo. She started as an interpreter of Brazilian bossa nova and American jazz standards, but started recording her own compositions in the 1970s.
In 1992, Astrud received the "Latin Jazz USA Award for Lifetime Achievement" for her outstanding contribution to Latin jazz music.

This makes me feel so feminine and soft. It's beautiful to be a woman
R.I.P Astrud Gilberto she had greatest singers of Bossa Nova. Forever Astrud Gilberto
RIP Astrud your voice and talent will remain forever
Fabulous music......loved this sound since I started on guitar around 1960............and suddenly 60years are gone......!!!??!!!
Nice mix with the vocals the center piece, not overwhelmed by the instrumental. Nothing like it today.
The Queen Of Bossa Nova . Meditation and It Might as Well Be Spring, back to back - Gold
She sings so effortlessly, and beautiful!
Astrud is special and sing nicely!Bossa nova was made for her .She had several hit records. Astrud is the best bossa nova singer ever.
Just the coolest thing ever. Ever!
I listen to this alot, it always makes me feel so happy and at peace because I feel like I really am in 1962 listening to a show about bossanova. what a unique feeling.
you are
Je suis né en 1962 : nostalgie...
Dom Um Romao - THE definitive Bossa Nova drummer who set the standard
Edison Machado (with whom I've the honor to play with) was (and still is) the legend...
Check out Milton Banana. OG.
And percussionist on the definitive Weather Report albums!
Wath a beautyful music .
please tell my im not the only one tripping on this
You and me and the whole world.
Yes, and it takes me back to my childhood, like Martin Denny music- so soothing and nostalgic!
@@kentclark6420 Kent ,Astrud is the best bossa nova singer ever !I am brazilian,I play and sing bossa nova too,in Portuguese and in English .

"I will wait for you, til the sun falls right out of the sky, for what else can I do" 😭
Love her always! ❤️❤️❤️
such a beautiful soul with a voice of gold. she lived and died in her final days as a recluse due to the woe fame bought her, so it was said. a very sad end for a such a talented yet beautifully fragile musician.
She’s stunningly beautiful,still is.I love her.
It's true !!!
Love her always❤️
One of the most velvety voice's EVER!!
The velvetiest!
❤️
Oh,,this her best,,,to say the least,,,,,sweetest voice ever to have been
I can't get enough of her beautiful voice. It's so soothing.
Absolutely beautiful , what a great voice and time in life .lovit , thank you
great music knows no borders or language
Holy cow! This Wim Overgauw made me take jazz guitar lessons in 1970. (My parents did not allow me to play piano as my brother was supposed to do that and my father did not want to hear "beat music".)
Superb from start to finish Ruud Brink was one of Stan Getz's favorite Tenor players you can see why he had his tone down to a tee but in a way it was his own style it wasn't a total copy of Stan's sound it had Ruud's own individuality and Astrid's voice was a joy!
awesome! bossanova is the best music ever!Brazilian Astrud Gilberto
As well as the enchanting voice, she was such a stylish woman.
I love Astrud's voice. Girl from Ipanema is my favorite. Everybody samba.❤😊
She can make you feel so nice
Saying gently "Goodbye sadness"
Still will break your heart
Listen to her once
You'll feel lucky she was there
One note samba would never be the same
~ "Astrud" by Basia
Astrud era uma bonequinha de porcelana, delicada, com um talento encantador!
Holds a clear note without wavering.
Holds many clear notes, with the velvety, subtle control hardly any other vocalists have.
Agreed ~ but I hear a little hovering, not wavering, but that's because it's natural ~ real. Today almost all vocal work is auto-tuned.
So much better than The Voice. Unadulterated. Simple and pure.
100% pure talent. And so all the musicians here.
I only recently got into her music, then she died. I will always love her music though, she will live on here.
I'm so glad that these videos exist!!! I grew up to this music.... I love the 60s Jazz and Bossa Nova, never to return, only available in our memories, yes, there are remakes but they are never quite the same!!! Thanks for posting this!! I noticed the Netherlands and Sweden were very open to non-traditional music and artists and the people appreciated them!!🥰
Rest in Peace Astrud. Absolute legend.
Thank you for posting
A very talented Woman
Her voice was so easy to listen to
Very enjoyable
Timeless!!!!!
Fantastic performances! What a joy to hear her play with different musicians and still render the tunes the way only she can!
Great musicianship, and a smokey voice really mellow a person out! Love the Bossa Nova sound.
In 2002, in the year in which she was admitted to the International Latin Music Hall of Fame, Gilberto announced she was taking “indefinite time off” from public performances after four decades playing clubs and festivals.

@@GjaP_242 I think I read that she wasn't interested in the whole 'fame' thing. Or the commercialization. I should watch an interview. But then she probably hasn't been doing interviews. I wouldn't want to deal with fame, either. That's the thing that sucks about the entertainment industry. Everyone deserves privacy.
@@kentclark6420 All very well. Ernest Hemingway has an interesting quote about James Joyce's famous book "Ulysses".
This great filmed concert is a great example of what made Astrud so great.
Depending on the exact date of this performance, she was 21 or 22 years old.
I have just renewed my love affair with Astrid Gilberto and Bossa Nova, the music that made a rather awkward teenager into someone with confidence because I introduced my dates to this beautiful music.
There is a beauty in the simplicity and talent of this music. Bravo.
My cats respond to this video and any Bossa Nova! Particularly, the cat we have that used to be a street cat. She comes out of hiding with me when I put this on❣
This is so lovely! Cats do love the best music.
@@maksphoto78 Absolutely! The 3 of them respond to this genre and heavily instrumented music such as Jazz and Classical💜👌🏽 It's such an impressive thing to witness☺️
Cats are very ethereal and psychic, too. My sister's cat came running into the room and jumped right up on my other sister's lap the moment she began channeling spirits, years ago.
Priceless!
RIP Astrud… Te Amo
Wow!!!! Beautiful voice, great band. The Dutch sure are great musicians then and now -
This is just lovely.................!!!!
sings so relax. so gentle. so cool
Just and awesome voice in my opinion.
Orgulho de ser brasileiro e termos um dos maiores plantel de artistas de todas as épocas. Astrud Gilberto tem uma das melhores vozes das intérpretes feminina. Pena não ter um reconhecimento à altura em seu próprio país de origem.
Traditional Jazz and Blues were not widely recognized in their country of origin. This voice, this music .. much of the world came to know Brazil because of it.
Her voice is so…..soothing, so unique!!🥰❤️
Fabulous, cool jazz masters
Fascination
Astrud could just float a melody. Her round tone and effortless phrasing were gorgeous.
Amazing.
Wow , wow and wow.
Every time I watch this. Wow is put prefectly.
maybe the coolest video on youtube
Bravo 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽
This is a great and perhaps the definitive Astrud Gilberto performance. The translations are appreciated as the other videos of this fine performance left Pim's words to my American imagination. Anyway, back to Astrud, she is so fine, so fine.
There are zero latest images of her on line, so sure she is still beautiful at 82 years in 2022
She was so intoned with the instruments around her voice, she still probably has even better full control of the music around her voice today. Fuck! i so want to see her live, it hurts.
Great to hear Astud sing this broadway hit, "It might as well be Spring" from the show State Fair. I have the original score and it is delightful.
My favorite.
I shall miss you Astrud...
I'm holding thi back of my throat for these vocals giving a longer impression of 'nose' in one shot.
Que hermosa se veia ahi Astrud... me entanta su belleza y su inoscencia... :)
Rip 😭
Voice from the other reality
Superb .
Maravilhoso!!!
Brilliant. Start of a great new trend..

Some people are just born to do certain things.
Escuchar esto luego de escuchar La Gran Fuga, no puedo menos que exclamar !!!VIVA LA MUSICA!!!!
Thanks Astrud for so many good moments listening you.
This video was in 1965, not 1962. Thank you for uploading.
fantastic set....
I just love this fantastic singer
thank you so much!. so happy for this! thank you thank you!
Absolutely stunning, no other way to describe it.
Beautiful woman with a beautiful voice
