I’m certain Astrud is singing a heavenly Bosa Nova. Her vocalization is soooo smooth and flowing - it takes me to a peaceful, tranquil, and completely relaxed place with infinite calm; like a soft, cool breeze. As with any truly talented artist, she sings effortlessly and with such ease. Add to that her natural beauty and innocent nature- I was in love! God bless you Astrud. You soothe my soul !
Pim Jacobs (1934-1996) was a jazz pianist and TV-host from the Netherlands. With shows like this he brought Jazz to the people. In 1962 he had just married the dutch jazz singer Rita Reys (1924-2013), who would rise to international fame in the 1960's and 1970's. I owe him a lot, because he introduced me to jazz when I was still in my teens.
He and his quintet performed on the soundtrack for the 1958 short, "Glass" (which won an Academy Award as "Best Documentary Short Subject"). ua-cam.com/video/d3QEpQ9ozVU/v-deo.html
Hello, maybe you can clear up an issue I commented on above: Superb recording (Phillips equipment?) but I'm not sure if the date is right. The stories relate how she was a last minute choice in-studio to do the English version of Ipanema ~ in 1964. [Here she is not with Getz, though he is mention by Pim. (Later Getz was reported to have been dismissive but also abusive.)]
This was recorded in July 1965 (and telecast the following October), when Astrud was in Holland for one day, during which she appeared on Pim's weekly program {"SEE JAZZ"}, and was in the U.S. the next day.
The greatest video for us with Pim and Bro. Ruud in studio is with WES MONTGOMERY.. also Han Bennink on drums: ua-cam.com/video/Dp_H9FYZy4E/v-deo.htmlsi=xtUt8ICzua6NYj0W.
The success of Gilberto's vocal work on the song "The Girl from Ipanema" quickly turned her into a jazz star, and soon she started recording solo. She started as an interpreter of Brazilian bossa nova and American jazz standards, but started recording her own compositions in the 1970s. In 1992, Astrud received the "Latin Jazz USA Award for Lifetime Achievement" for her outstanding contribution to Latin jazz music. Source: Last FM
I listen to this alot, it always makes me feel so happy and at peace because I feel like I really am in 1962 listening to a show about bossanova. what a unique feeling.
Bedankt. RIP multi-lingual Astrud Gilbert June 5, 2023, born Astrud Evangelina Weinert by a German father in Salvador da Bahia. Maybe she understood Dutch too? Just mix German, English, Swedish and Danish and voilà! Anyway, we had lunch during the carnival in Feb. 2004 at the restaurant 1 block from the gay Ipanema Beach where this song once was written. 🏖🍺🍲 /J, Sweden
Superb from start to finish Ruud Brink was one of Stan Getz's favorite Tenor players you can see why he had his tone down to a tee but in a way it was his own style it wasn't a total copy of Stan's sound it had Ruud's own individuality and Astrid's voice was a joy!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ My second favorite Bossa Nova Jazz and Samba songstress, Lady Astrud Gilberto. ❤ RIP Lady Astrud in The Most Highest Heaven singing along with Lady Sassie Sarah Lois Vaughan & The Heavenly Choir. 🎼🎹🎻🥁🎸🎺 ❤❤❤❤❤❤
This great filmed concert is a great example of what made Astrud so great. Depending on the exact date of this performance, she was 21 or 22 years old.
Holy cow! This Wim Overgauw made me take jazz guitar lessons in 1970. (My parents did not allow me to play piano as my brother was supposed to do that and my father did not want to hear "beat music".)
I'm so glad that these videos exist!!! I grew up to this music.... I love the 60s Jazz and Bossa Nova, never to return, only available in our memories, yes, there are remakes but they are never quite the same!!! Thanks for posting this!! I noticed the Netherlands and Sweden were very open to non-traditional music and artists and the people appreciated them!!🥰
She can make you feel so nice Saying gently "Goodbye sadness" Still will break your heart Listen to her once You'll feel lucky she was there One note samba would never be the same ~ "Astrud" by Basia

@@Gurci28 I think I read that she wasn't interested in the whole 'fame' thing. Or the commercialization. I should watch an interview. But then she probably hasn't been doing interviews. I wouldn't want to deal with fame, either. That's the thing that sucks about the entertainment industry. Everyone deserves privacy.
Orgulho de ser brasileiro e termos um dos maiores plantel de artistas de todas as épocas. Astrud Gilberto tem uma das melhores vozes das intérpretes feminina. Pena não ter um reconhecimento à altura em seu próprio país de origem.
Traditional Jazz and Blues were not widely recognized in their country of origin. This voice, this music .. much of the world came to know Brazil because of it.

@@maksphoto78 Absolutely! The 3 of them respond to this genre and heavily instrumented music such as Jazz and Classical💜👌🏽 It's such an impressive thing to witness☺️
Cats are very ethereal and psychic, too. My sister's cat came running into the room and jumped right up on my other sister's lap the moment she began channeling spirits, years ago.
I have just renewed my love affair with Astrid Gilberto and Bossa Nova, the music that made a rather awkward teenager into someone with confidence because I introduced my dates to this beautiful music.
She was so intoned with the instruments around her voice, she still probably has even better full control of the music around her voice today. Fuck! i so want to see her live, it hurts.
RIP Astrud… Te Amo
Thank you Astrud. You brought Bossa Nova to the USA. Such a beautiful women inside and out.
R I P Astrud, thank you for your soothing & beautiful voice 🙏🏻
My first crush as a young boy. I will never forget her. ❤ God bless her.
Her voice is so clean and uncorrupted by modern trends.
❤️👍
God bless you Astrud. You were unique with childlike innocence. May you rest in peace forever.
Rest in peace. Thank you for everything, Astrud!

Tranquilizingand peaceful is the exact the right word for this music.
Where these songs play anxiety cannot exist.
I didn’t think it was possible that I could love Astrud Gilberto even more, yet, here we are. Thank you, Astrud.
Me as well, Brother.... she's the living end.
Just discovered her! She's very captivating 😍

Nice mix with the vocals the center piece, not overwhelmed by the instrumental. Nothing like it today.
Such a beautiful woman. My breath always catches when I see her. And her voice commands the notes
Just learned Astrud passed away one week ago at age 83. She had such a beautiful voice and wrote such beautiful songs. RIP.
This video was in 1965, not 1962. Thank you for uploading.
Just the coolest thing ever. Ever!
What a lovely voice. It is a voice to fall in love inmediately as I did years back and continue listening her music .
Astrud era uma bonequinha de porcelana, delicada, com um talento encantador!
Pure perfection. Buttery, velvety vocals from Astrud, and subtle instrumentation from the rest of the band.

So much better than The Voice. Unadulterated. Simple and pure.
100% pure talent. And so all the musicians here.
I can't get enough of her beautiful voice. It's so soothing.
Holds a clear note without wavering.
Holds many clear notes, with the velvety, subtle control hardly any other vocalists have.
Agreed ~ but I hear a little hovering, not wavering, but that's because it's natural ~ real. Today almost all vocal work is auto-tuned.
Fabulous, cool jazz masters
