    I always think it's funny when youtubers that didn't grow up with film explain SLR's as DSLR's that shoot film, lol.

    In the early 2000s, most of these cool 35s were shelved for digital convenience. I'm glad that you and others are renewing interest in film and classic cameras.
    Also, there's no shame in auto modes. It's the composition that matters more imo.
    I've always overlooked the early rebels, thinking they were too basic. Now I want one. Thanks for the review.

    Awesome Steele. You did good. That’s what those Auto features were formed to make life easier. And yes, pro’s use some of them as well. Keep your eye on the action , less things to fiddle with. Manual override has its place.

    Dude, a DSLR that's not digital is just called an SLR. 😁 Nice video, as always.

      Thank you! A photographer should know what an SLR is and that once film is taken out of the picture, no pun intended, it becomes a DSLR.
      I just hope it’s never referred to FSLR, film single lens reflex.

    • @doctorstrobe
      @doctorstrobe 2 роки тому +2

      Steele is not from that era, I think this detail can easily be forgiven. FSLR coining could definitely happen though...

    Thanks for explaining the downsides of this camera! When I first clicked on this video, my immediate thought was: If this camera allows EF mounted lenses, and has autofocus features that the more vintage canon 35mm models don't have (i.e., AE-1, AE-1 program, A1, F1, etc.), why would people even bother choosing the older models, considering you could just use modern EF mounted L glass on this SLR. But your explanation about the tack sharpness of the Rebel G makes TOTAL SENSE. There is something much more organic about not having tack sharp photos that immerses the viewer more in the moment of the photo, which i guess is why film shooters default to the more vintage bodies. Appreciate the video!!!

    I liked how the photos turned out. Feels vintage with sharper clarity to photo. I think it would be great for taking photos of people cause that was one of the major flaws of older film cameras. They made people look to fuzzy and not sharp or detailed. Good video and loved the photos. Keep up the great work, Steele!

      AGREED! Just found this camera at an estate sale and was so happy to hear him say that the photos come out much sharper than a Minolta. I actually have a digital film Minolta that I use to shoot for everything. I mainly shoot people, car shows, landscapes, etc. and when I do- (and maybe I still haven't figured out how to properly work my Minolta)-the pictures don't always come out as id imagine. Looking forward to using this camera at car shows !

    I have the 500N, which is the same model. I love it. I used it with some TriX, Ektachrome and Pro Image 100 and a Canon 85mm. You're right when you say it's really easy to use. I usually leave the AF in the center of the image and reframe, leave it in aperture priority.

    I only had the old Canon F-1n & later EOS 1n. They’re nice but bigger and heavier than I need on a walk around day. I came across a EOS 500n that looks like this for way less then expected. Made since you have it as a 2nd body.
    It’s not built like 1n but I won’t cry as much if broke on a trip. Set up properly w: the dedicated TTL flash, it very easily can be made into a point & shoot.

    Found this video because someone on Marketplace was selling one for $30 with an EF 35-80mm (I really just wanted the cheap lens, but the camera was the bonus lol) I have a pair of AE1 Programs, and a Canonet QL17 III, but having something with an AF might be a nice changeup for that price. Thanks for posting and sharing your thoughts! If anything, you definitely sold me on the 40mm pancake that I might use with my full-frame 6D!

  • @Momokeeii
    @Momokeeii 6 місяців тому +1

    I own this camera. I actually found it in the back of a closet in my parent’s house lol. I use the lens I found the camera with (35-80mm canon lens) and with the vintage lens I get more of the grain we come to expect with film. The vintage lens still has auto focus which I like because I’m a very casual film photographer. I’ve also used stuff like expired film and low iso film in the camera to mixed results. I find that the self rolling mechanism sometimes “eats” my film for lack of a better term especially with specialty film.

    • @steelejohnsonphoto

    Man, that 40mm lens looks sweet -- it's so thin and portable. I recently picked up an old canon SLR at a flea market, but it has a clunky kit zoom lens. I'm going to have to hunt for one of those.

    I was given one of these years ago can’t remember how long maybe 10-15. It was my moms and in the late 90 this unit, I remember being all the rage. At least for us who didn’t make photography and profession or passion. What I remember specifically that stood out about it was the clarity of the picture. Nothing compared to its sharpness. Granted I was just a spunky teen at that time and didn’t pay much attention to its full features. I recently cleaned it up and plan on seeing what if anything shows up tomorrow on the film left in the case that expired 11 years ago

    I bought a Canon 5D mark III in 2015. Body only. Only auto focus lens i owned was from my Canon T3i. Of course that kit lens wont work on a full frame EF DSLR. So i bought a used Rebel G with a cheap kit lens to use my 5D3 for general shooting. I put the Rebel G body in a box and forgot about it. Until i got the urge to shoot some film again. So i pulled the Rebel G and was impressed by how nice the photos turned out.

    Agree, I've been using it for 4 years, and the images are crystal clear (I shoot mostly with Kodak Gold). However I still prefer grainy images instead but have no idea how to obtain it. Maybe it has something to do with the film stock.
    Overall, Rebel G is a very durable camera, though a bit heavy

    • @steelejohnsonphoto

    I wanted to get into point-and-shoot film cameras but the prices are ridiculous. I currently shoot with Japanese rangefinders from the 50s, 60s, and 70s but it would be nice to be able to have autofocus while shooting film. Your video inspired me to look beyond the trendy P&S cameras. I picked up a working/good condition Canon Rebel EOS X model (with no built in flash) on eBay for $13. That's a good camera. I prefer the 300 series, though. They are the very last models and they have improved specs (especially autofocus, shutter speed, and flash). The EOS 300x (Canon Rebel T2) is my favorite. It's from 2004--the very last Canon SLR film camera introduction. It's crazy small and light, too.

      Aperture mode allows you to control the aperture, and the other settings will adjust to compensate for proper exposure. Auto will just control everything to get proper exposure.
