Moving With Kodak Ultramax 400
A lot has happened since I last posted. Earlier this year I moved from Nashville, TN to Orange County, CA. I decided to document my journey on film using Kodak 400 and my Minolta X570. It took a while to finish the roll, but I hope you enjoy these moments.

I only had the old Canon F-1n & later EOS 1n. They’re nice but bigger and heavier than I need on a walk around day. I came across a EOS 500n that looks like this for way less then expected. Made since you have it as a 2nd body. It’s not built like 1n but I won’t cry as much if broke on a trip. Set up properly w: the dedicated TTL flash, it very easily can be made into a point & shoot.
Awesome Steele. You did good. That’s what those Auto features were formed to make life easier. And yes, pro’s use some of them as well. Keep your eye on the action , less things to fiddle with. Manual override has its place.
Hey bro! Just wanted to ask if your viewfinder is dim? I have an EOS Rebel G but my viewfinder seems to be very dim
Hey! My viewfinder isn’t dim. My first guess would be that it might be battery related, but I’m not totally sure!
Will pushing it 1 stop make the photos come out more nostalgic ?
Unfortunately I’m not sure! I’ve never pushed film before, but I’m thinking I need to try doing this soon!
4:36 is the prime example why in practice digital is far superior to film. Unless you have an absurdly amount of money to shoot a single scene with an entire roll of film, digital would always be better because it encourages you to take photos at various different angles, zoom in or out while getting away or closer to the subject for different perspective.
Shooting BW is diabolical.. You have to disassociate yourself from your present reality into the imaginary world of the past..
Those film images are beautiful.. that shot was rather soft because you was shooting wide open.. the iphone is a wide lens with little to no optical narrow depth of field that's why it's sharper. Try Orwo NC 500 for a different aesthetic
Thank you! I'll have to look up that film stock!
All film is worth shooting, we don't have much to pick from
truth
New subscriber. 🙌🙌😎😎
Welcome!
I was just looking at a Nikon One Touch 100 that seems to be in perfect condition at only u$20.... I'll see if I decide. THANK YOU. 🙌🙌😎😎
I hope it is a great camera for you!
In india its almost $18.only budget option here is substandard respools
It's getting expensive!
hi bro! I luv your content
Thanks so much!
Thanks for this video! I just bought 6 rolls of Kodak Ultramax 400. Here in Canada, it’s almost $60 for 3 rolls 😳 But it’s worth it. I completely feel the same way as you described about the tactile experience of loading the film, rewinding it and the anticipation to see how the images came out. All your images came out stunning!
$20 a roll is wild! But it's absolutely worth it! Shooting film is such an incredible process that can be so rewarding. I hope you're enjoy the Kodak 400!
I actually really prefer the film photo from the boat. It has a beautiful dreamy soft and nostalgic feel. There’s more mystery there somehow. Just picked up some Ultramax 😊
Thanks! I hope the Ultramax is treating you well!
what lens was used for the minolta 3000i?
I was given one of these years ago can’t remember how long maybe 10-15. It was my moms and in the late 90 this unit, I remember being all the rage. At least for us who didn’t make photography and profession or passion. What I remember specifically that stood out about it was the clarity of the picture. Nothing compared to its sharpness. Granted I was just a spunky teen at that time and didn’t pay much attention to its full features. I recently cleaned it up and plan on seeing what if anything shows up tomorrow on the film left in the case that expired 11 years ago
Such a neat story! It's cool how the old cameras are making a comeback. I hope the images came back in great condition!
Maybe the crispness was the auto focus
Agree 100%! I need a vintage lens on this camera for softer shots
Enjjoyed your thoughts very much. I kind of mirror the same frame of thinking as you do. It is about always getting better on what we see and how to best express it on film. Well, at ileast for me. Thank you for video. God Bless
Thank you so much!
What’s the difference between aperture mode and auto mode
Aperture mode allows you to control the aperture, and the other settings will adjust to compensate for proper exposure. Auto will just control everything to get proper exposure. Using Aperture mode allows me to maintain the specific aperture I want to get a certain depth of field, without having to worry about my shutter speed. Great question!
I find Kodak Ektar 100 also very affordable and nice to shoot with.
Amazing!
Thanks for this! Useful. And some great photos!
Thanks for watching!
Just picked up this camera at an estate sale since I’ve been curious about film photography. Thanks for your insightful review! It sounds like this is a good, reliable, entry-point film camera.
I hope you're enjoying the camera!
Its not you. NYC can really be rough on an in camera meter. The exposure range can be super bright skys to dark shadows because of the buildings. Try traveling from Downtown to uptown and shoot looking east. This should keep the sun behind you. You will find the deepest shadows in Downtown and mid town. Also adjust your exposure because your meter can be easily fooled.
Agree, I've been using it for 4 years, and the images are crystal clear (I shoot mostly with Kodak Gold). However I still prefer grainy images instead but have no idea how to obtain it. Maybe it has something to do with the film stock. Overall, Rebel G is a very durable camera, though a bit heavy
It could be the film stock, the lens, or the film needs to be pushed/pulled. So many factors at play!
I’m sorry, but this sounds like you don’t have any experience manually focusing cameras. The X-570 was my first camera and I NEVER had a problem focusing it. Maybe you need glasses or there’s something wrong with the focusing screen, but the x-570 is literally one of the easiest cameras to focus. Hasselblad used Minolta’s Acute Matte screens because they were the best for nearly a decade, so if you can’t focus a x-570, it’s not the camera’s fault. Also, judging a camera model based on a broken example that has a non-working exposure counter is pretty dumb. Any broken camera will be difficult to use. Reviews need to be based on working examples, not thrift shop bargains.
I noticed that the lens on front of your Minolta is an aftermarket one, not a true Minolta Rokkor. As a fan of Rokkor lenses for years, they often exceed the competition. If you’ve never shot with a real Minolta lens- you have to try it!
I'll have to look one up and give it a try!
How do you get the images back from the film?
I send the film off to be developed and scanned by a lab in California. Once the images are developed and scanned, they email me the scanned files that I can download to my computer. They also mail me the physical developed film back!
Yes definitely lenses make a difference
100%!
Just keep shooting! The beauty of film and vintage cameras is getting unexpected results…
It's a fun process for sure!
Always used portra. Initially NC then VC for a while then when they changed, 160. I like the consistency from box to box and always know what it will look like. Never tried the more general purpose high street films. May give this a go for just snaps. This reminds me of early fuji. Need to get a 35m first. Sold all my 35 gear over 10 years ago.
Time to get some new (old) 35mm gear again!
I own this camera. I actually found it in the back of a closet in my parent’s house lol. I use the lens I found the camera with (35-80mm canon lens) and with the vintage lens I get more of the grain we come to expect with film. The vintage lens still has auto focus which I like because I’m a very casual film photographer. I’ve also used stuff like expired film and low iso film in the camera to mixed results. I find that the self rolling mechanism sometimes “eats” my film for lack of a better term especially with specialty film.
What a great find! I always get nervous with self rolling mechanisms in these older cameras.
Those New York City ones on film look so good! No need for black and white! Love the colors! They look super mystical.
Thank you! 🙏
i cant lie, if you only shot 3 roles in a whole year, film wasnt for you to begin with
People have lives outside of film cameras, I can’t lie
@@Shola_Omishakin thanks for the update Sola
Nice video. The best thing about this camera is I can use the lenses from my Sony A mount DSLRs on it!
I didn't know that! I may have to try this out!
Found one at a local thrift store for $6. Luckily, i also jave a dedicated camera shop in my area so battery and film will be easy to come by! :)
That's amazing!!
This is amazing. Ive been getting into adapting vintage lenses too and I feel like I'm half way there to that film look. Like you say modern digital cameras are just too good and capture way too much detail, but blurring images is not the solution. Shooting at a low pixel count and degrading images is a great idea
Do you a video on how to insert the film on the minolta?
Black and white film may be cheaper, but the lab processing is more expensive. I never cared for Kodak Gold, so I'll take Kodak Max 400 any day.
Kodak Ultramax 400 is such a great film stock that's easy to get a hold of!
What type of film can I use on this camera, and also do I need flash when I’m shooting film outside?
Any 35mm film should work! And the flash use will completely depend on the amount of light you have. If you're shooting outside in the middle of the day, you most likely won't need the flash unless you're doing a specific stylized shot. Hope that helps!
I mean, Av mode is not a bad mode, coming from a photographer I get your point. Sometimes you wanna relax and have a fun time.
Yeah I typically want an easier process personally!
Well i would love to see this gamera with vintage lens. Maybe even compare with modern lens. Same camera but different lenses
I need to find a vintage lens and remake this video!
Hey man, random teenager here. I am also about where you are eith learning film but i do think there isnt anything wrong with the camera. Its essnetially just a method of film advancment. There are however many adapters to use vintage glass with this camera so i would try that.
You can save a bit by bulk loading film and using a DSLR instead of getting the lab to scan it. I also find the DSLR scans look much better than the results I got from the lab and you have more latitude for editing although you might need some additional Lightroom plugins to to convert the color negatives accurately.
I tried DSLR "scan", but it feels wrong to make a photo of the negative/positive film. And its a lot of time. There are a lot of labs scanning in high-res and TIFF format and im ok with spending 5€/$ more per roll. In the end id like to have a good scanner and developing myself. But it takes time and time is money... same with selfmade DSLR "scans"..
@@kaic9276 The way I see it is a scanner is basically a type of digital camera taking a picture of the negative and converting it to digital. When the labs scan the images they decide on the amount of sharpening, color balance etc.. with a raw file you're starting with more of a blank canvas. You're right, depending on your setup it can b a pain to do. I spent half an hour scanning in two rolls yesterday. I'd hate to do it with 10 or 20. If I had a choice I'd print them in a darkroom, I think that's the ultimate, but that's just too expensive and not practical for me
Just today i got it
Thank you for a really interesting video. I found the comparison of digital vs analogue quite illuminating After having seen the Ultramax images, I found the digital images and video beautiful but rather disturbing; a reaction that I wasn't expecting. Having acquired far too many old lenses for use on my EM5, I've started doing analogue once again and researching the different options that are available both in the choice of emulsion and also the variety of scanning options that are available. It's really sad that films and development have become so expensive as it is a real discouragement to anyone wishing to start in analogue photography I find it quite bizarre that a really good quality SLR can cost less than one film plus processing.
Did you ever find out how to overcome the hazy pics? Love the video BTW.
Thanks! I still haven't found a fix!
Thanks for the upload. It was a good watch and before all helpful! 👍
Glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching!
have you tried a vintage lens on the rebel g yet? I'd like to see the difference
Not yet, but I think it's time I order an old lens!
I like the vintage look better
I know this video has been up for a bit now! But I do own a couple Minolta film cameras, if it stops working in the lever stops advancing, don't forget to change out the batteries because some of the x-series doesn't work unless the batteries are good! So that camera may not be a goner!😊
Good to know! I'm still using my X570 and it's working great!
