I think the appeal is that digging deeper into art is fun and interesting, spongebob was made by people who cared, so they hid fun stuff around, and theories is all about finding the hidden fun with the added bonus of making a story out of it Sometimes it means nothing, the artist was just having fun, but art is all about interpretation Basically these theories is what art is all about. Just like how people over analyse paintings

SB-129 freaked me out so badly as a kid. I hated that episode. Same with the kelp forest episode. Always scared me, and it drove me nuts that in the next episode they were back in civilization because I really wanted to see how the heck they escaped and it never occurred to my kid mind that it's just a cartoon and logic doesn't matter. Love the kelp episode nowadays, but the SB-129 I haven't watched in years because it reminds me of my childhood dread that I might freeze, jump into a time machine, and be... The reason is simple - a story is a story. It doesn't matter if it was made by the original authors of the show or by some random dude on youtube, if you enjoy it that's all that matters. If a theory tells an interesting story and you find it narratively satisfying, it makes sense and explains things to you - it doesn't matter if that's what the creators intended.
To add to your engagement, and add another point of reasoning is show theories and analysis are blowing up right now because it combines long form entertainment for those of us who are a bit older and need our attention spans held for longer periods of time than TikTok, but also doesn’t force us into deep nihilism about things that are too serious. I don’t mind watching a comedian on a podcast for 3 hours but after 3 hours of him talking to Ben Shapiro and seeing everyone on Facebook fight for the next week about him, I need some stupid South Park or SpongeBob theories to unwind and have a good cry to.
There's a guy on UA-cam with the screen name "Mustard Pregnancy" (yuck!) who cranks out video after video of ridiculous SpongeBob-related theories. His videos are one step above slop. It's obvious that he's merely trying to get one of his videos picked up by the algorithm so it can be viewed millions of times so he can get that sweet, sweet ad revenue. I wish UA-cam's algorithm would stop recommending them to me.

okay, if we really wanted to dive deeper into the idea of spongebob theories exploding in popularity simply because they're fun, i think it taps directly into a certain element of uniquely gen Z (and occasionally gen X latchkey kid & cusper zillennial) culture, specifically our absurdist sense of humor:
make big thing little.
make little thing big.
suffering from debilitating mental illness? it's okay, we all have silly little breakdowns sometimes.
fascism is spreading like cancer in the free world? haha funny orange man.
cartoon for children from like 10-20 years ago with no real consistency in the layout and chronology of its various physical and temporal (?) settings, a total lack of adherence to real-world logic (scientific, spatial, technological, et cetera, et cetera, i should really just stfu now) and common sense, and -- above all -- so. much. cartoon. logic?
well surely every single hyperspecific fan theory and even remotely notable and/or mildly entertaining (or, in some cases, utterly mundane -- and, thus, -perhaps deservedly- overlooked) aspect of said show deserves a thoroughly-researched 4-hour deep-dive-style video essay uploaded for anyone to watch via the biggest video streaming platform in the world.
**more concisely put, we cope by making light of what scares us and instead focusing our attention on whatever has the lowest stakes. i think it's reflective of our famously 'we laugh lest we cry' attitude (as they say...by which i mean mostly my mom but dammit she's got a point).
(and no, the irony of seemingly criticizing, waxing philosophical, and generally burning brainpower thinking about the _real-world_ complex socio- and psychocultural explanations for and implications of such aforementioned overly-analytical video essays discussing theories, headcanons, interpersonal relationships between characters, and _in-universe_ cultures and sociopolitical climates is not, in fact, lost on me, thankyouverymuch)
