Thanks for watching. Dave ; )
BEST jewelry metal cutting video ever!! There are many videos demonstrating a cutting "technique" on UA-cam but yours is the first that advises to keep the metal on the right, cutting on the left side of the piece!!...My cutting always create curled, burry, edges about midway through, as I ignorantly scissor my way along the right side of the circle...Hammering this mess out gets me close but is obviously (now) not the correct way to achieve a clean cut. At all. Thank you...thank you...thank you
We all take the simple route (myself included) But I did a lot of research for this video, and what I discovered made sense. So passing it on. Thanks for watching. Dave
The Perfect video, lots of vital information I would never have guessed and no long winded chat.
Thanks for the comments. Glad you found it useful. Dave
I have been using shears for over 60 years with no concept that I was doing it completely wrong most of the time. Great video.
If it works, it's not wrong. Thanks for watching. Dave
Glad to see this video. Thank you! I just bought one, and it is way too tight. I can hardly get it open with 2 hands. Would you know how to loosen them? I tried WD-40 already...
That's about it really. Oil and work it back and forth. They should loosen up. Dave
Thank you for making this video. This is very helpful. As to the shears from your video, what is the maximum thickness of sterling silver, fine silver, copper and gold it can cut?
Depends how strong you are and if the material is annealed. But I'd say 1.5mm is about the practical limit. Dave
These look like Elipse Professional 7" Straight Jeweller's Snips. I hope so, because that's what I've just ordered 🙂.
Same tool, many brands. Dave
what do i need to cut a wide sheet metal in half?
With a pair of tin snips like these, the width of the metal makes no difference. Note the blades are only an inch or so long, so almost everything you cut will be longer than that. Like scissors on a piece of paper, the size of the paper is irrelevant. Obviously this is assuming the metal is thin enough to be cut with the shears. Hope this answers your question. Dave
Very helpful re left right use. Thought it just meant for left handed…. Lol! 🤦♂️
Glad it was helpful! Dave
What's the max thickness these will cut Dave ?
Frances Winyard It depends on the material. Aluminium sheet is obviously easier than copper. I cut some 1mm copper sheet that had gone through the rolling mill (a few times) and seriously work hardened. That is OK, but any thicker would be a struggle I think. Wire, I use 1.2mm. I'd say up to 2mm would be fine, but above that might get difficult. Of course you can always "force it", but I'm giving every day suggestions here. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Dave !
can it cut 1mm thick copper board?
By copper "board" I presume you mean the boards used for making printed circuit boards?. They are often made from copper coated fibreglass boards, which can be quite tough. But I haven't tried cutting any as I am a jeweller, and so I don't make electronics. Dave
Celtic Dreams thx a lot sir
Hi Dave. What is the best shears for jewellery in your opinion please
To be honest these are. I have two pairs of these, and a pair of Draper ones. The Draper opens look very cool, with rubber grips and nice pointed tips, but they are useless. and constantly coming loose. These cheap ones never let me down. Dave
@@CelticDreamsCoUk thank you so much
Just looked and it’s up to 0.4-5 mm only
I was hoping up to 1mm
Or do they cut thicker. Sorry to ask so much
