How does the performance of the new M3 Max MacBook Pro compare to previous models? How does it stack up against a Windows machine?
I’ve had the M3 Max MacBook Pro for 30 days now so I wanted to share my experience of this $4,000 machine! Is it worth the mammoth price tag? Well, in this video, I carefully consider the performance, battery life, connectivity, support, user experience, and score them based on my lifelong experience with Apple products.
I also share the reasons why I have some regrets about buying the M3 Max MacBook Pro.

Have been using M1 MB Pro 14 inch for 18 months already and the performance is superb. I've never heard a cooling fan kicking on, even during my development work.

Man, I am on a late 2013 MacBook Pro with 8GB memory and it still does the job with Ableton 10.
I'm on a macbook pro 2015 with 8 gb and after 7-8 channels with multi processing units on Ableton 11, it stops functioning properly and CPU is overloaded.
Using M1 Air I'm so happy as a Graphic designer & Content creator!

You can buy a single HDMI to usb-c adapter. I bought one for like 90 PLN which is around 20 usd I believe. Worth purchasing as you can connect the monitor from any side. The one I bought can bear 4k @ 120hz so definitely worth it.
You can also get a repair shop to upgrade the storage. Not sure with M3 Max, but M1 128GB upgraded to 2TB is sweet.

My M1 MBP 14" 32Ram 1TB 10Core died right after upgrading the OS to Sonoma and of course my apple care expired. But my 2015 intel MBP I keep as a backup may be slower, but hasn't had any issues.

I've been using Duet Display for a really long time. I use it to connect it my 2017 MBP to an older iPad and run my teleprompter screen on the iPad.
Did you get that Full resolution with HiDPI? Becuase I have the same macbook pro and it works with full res with that exact same display, but it's not HiDPI and everything seems too small
with 18 gb Ram, the RAM monitoring turns yellow with xcode and iOS simulator open together?

It will be 5 years or so. But even though it’s not recommended to use beyond their end of life date, plenty of people do just fine with no issues!
I Man Mathed myself this exact model after 3 years with a 16" M1 Pro...I doubt I'll ever scratch the capacity of it but I won't be in a hurry to change it either 😁

I bought M1 Max more than 2 years ago and it’s blazing fast and I don’t feel need to upgrade perhaps till M5 :)
To be fair I upgraded from an m1 MacBook MacBook Air to an m3 max MacBook Pro 16” and I justified it to myself with the 120hz display
Is there a difference between 14” and 16” Max Chip due to the fans? Saw the heat throttles the 14” and just ordered. Is there a way to cool the 14”? Any help is appreciated!
just buy base m3 max 14 core and you’re fine
It is proven that the 14" throttles significantly earlier and harder than the 16"
However, you can minimize this by using a cooling pad and lowering your ambient room temperature.

You never forget about the notch. It is always in your face looking broken.
Since the SSD and Ram is soldered on, you most certainty will at some point. Btw i got the M3 pro and love it, but soldered on is such a kick in the guts. Say your SSD or part of your Ram dies in a few years time.. well you cant just get a ssd, you need a whole new board

But SSD fails rates are quite low I did the approximate math based on my use. I edit photos and videos as a hobby and even based on the extensive amounts of editing and writing I should be getting about 10 years. I will most likely update the laptop in about 5-7 years anyways.
@jaspreetsidhu5708 that is true but things can happen, there is no real legitimate reason they're soldered on, besides making them unrepairable and basically replacable.
I've always used Laptops and unfortunately sometimes issues can happen, I've had SSD die just after warranties. But thankfully it was how all laptops should be, a simple fix. 120 new SSD and it was faster than the original lol
@@Everyday-man oh no I agree for sure I do back it up once a month incase but fingers crossed nothing happens and this laptop does last me 5-7 years without problems.
I had a 2019 Intel based 15 inch MacBook Pro, and it was great however it started to get really bad. I upgraded to the new M3 Pro 16 inch MacBook Pro and I absolutely love it!!

I like the blue and orange. Manmaths argument made sense. I do use intel mac, just a macbook air, which I intend to upgrade to a M series chip MacBook, sometime next year. But my 2017 intel MacBook Air is doing just fine for now for what I need it to do, also maybe it will give time for Apple to come out with an M3 MacBook Air 15", which would be pretty awesome.
Probably won’t. Doesn’t make sense to have a M3 air with the current line up. People can just top up abit more to get the pro version.

I hope I get a response before this day gets started. I bought the 14inch MacBookPro M3Max with the following specs! 14 Core CPU, 30 Core GPU, 36GB of unified memory. I believe = max 300GB/‘s memory bandwidth. My question is this.,. I will ONLY use this laptop for editing 1080p and some 4k files (drone footage) maybe some 4k DSLR footage as well with a lot of 3rd party plug in’s for Final Cut Pro X like Titles, Generators, Effects and transitioning etc… should I return this product and upgrade to 64 GB of unified memory with 16 core CPU and 40core GPU? Which by the way would = Max 400GB/s memory bandwidth! OH and does 14” vs 16” make a difference with the same exact specs? Thank you in advance.
Sorry for the delay! Honestly the M3 Pro with 36Gb Memory should be a solid laptop to edit mostly 1080p and some 4K files like you've said.
I have no issues editing 4k 10bit footage from my Sony cameras on my machine.

You don’t need to worry about RAM bandwidth for that workload. Even 8K video won’t use your 300GB/s bandwidth.
400GB/s is what we have on supercomputers with HBM3.
That is limiting for large data science, and AI workloads.
By comparison most Windows GPU are limited by PCIe to around 32GB/s.
M3 pro with 18gb ram and 500gb it’s more than enough for you. Waste of money man. Why investing in a ultra mega Mac now if you could buy another one in 2 or 3 years and get more atualize
@@plairesfx Also,upgrades depreciate REALLY HARD. A base model M1 MBP14 goes for around $1250 on fleabay. My unbinned, 1TB/32GB version that cost over $3k sells for $1500.

I’ve noticed in several videos on the Mac with M3 chip. That the apple logo on the lid when opening the laptop no longer lights up.

It's been like that for like 8 years
After a month on my 128gb, m3 Max/4tb I’m pretty happy. I lost nearly $2,600 on my m2 with 96gbs selling it but the m3 solved a lot of the m2 issues. I had to install TG fan pro, because apple’s software doesn’t increase the fan speeds during heavy load properly. This is an issue they need to fix. But with TG fan pro the laptop stays at the proper temps and I’m 4k gaming while working with multiple monitors, with no issues thus far.

your going to upgrade, the FOMO will set in, and there will be that 1 fix or 1 feature you need. thunderbolt 5, will be here this year, on PC first i think. Displayport 2.1 and newer wifi or bluetooth.
You probably won’t have a choice when it comes to replacing it. The long term failure rate of the Macs of the last couple years is horrendous. You can’t fix or replace the RAM or SSD. When the SSD gets to its write limit, the laptop turns into an anchor.
"Man Math" --- I love it! That's a lot shorter than how I usually describe myself: "More credit than common sense".

9:49 Hard to agree about the value. I hold back replacing my 16-inch Macbook Pro M1 Pro because the trade-in value is only about 1/4 of my purchase price 2 years ago!

What if I've never owned a Macbook and this i'snt an upgrade? But more-so an investment.
I got the EliteBook 835 G10 7840U with 32GB, 5G and installed Samsung 990 Pro 2TB, for about USD1,650 only. Installed my preferred Linux distro Opensuse Tumbleweed and got all things working out of box. Just saying. :)

You’re prob better off getting the M3Pro with 18GB and 1TB custom specs from Best Buy at a lower cost. I think $200 less.

I love this review. I recently bought the m3pro with 11core 14 GPU … so the $1,999 version! I do audio engineering etc. do you think I should’ve gotten the 12 core CPU with 18 Core GPU? With 1tb

Sometimes it also gets snail paced aswell because of that

I feel they haven’t bothered upgrading the camera on the laptop because most people have an iPhone when they get a MacBook. And you cant get any better than an iPhone front facing camera so why bother?
And the level that the camera of the Mac is on is still standard enough that isn’t terrible.
The M1,M2 and M3 processors are all fast enough for most people's needs. The only way to order a slow M1,M2 or M3 is to order the base 8 GB RAM and slow 256 GB SSD configurations. If I was a power user and was buying a Mac then I would order a M2 Pro Mini, a M2 Mini or an M1 Mini with at least 16 Gb of RAM and a 512 Gb SSD. I regard these Apple Silicon Macs with enough RAM and storage as being future proof.
It is outrageous that the base M1,M2 and M3 Macs all have inadequate RAM and storage and also that almost all of the Macs that Apple ships are base systems. For most PCs and laptops you can update the SSD for around $50 and can update the RAM for around $50. It would be difficult to find a PC with less than 16 Gb of RAM if they are in the Mac price range.
Call it what it is, anti-consumer, anti right to repair, planned obsolescence, and on top of that highly manipulative price gouging. So it's simple, stop supporting them with your money.
@@newolde1 I have never bought a Mac and never will because none of the software that I need at home is available for the Mac. I have also never seen a Mac in any company that I have worked for because none of the embedded software development apps that I need are available for the Mac. They are only available for Windows and Linux PCs. A civil engineer told me that none of the civil engineering design apps that he uses are available for the Mac either.
The only products that I have ever bought from Apple was a half price brand new iPhone SE 2016, iPhone 7 and iPhone SE 2020.

It’s a Samsung NEO G9.
It’s basically a half height 8K display… or 2 4K 32” displays in one.
I seriously considered it, but the IO was too limiting for my needs. For less money I got both a Samsung Odyssey G8 (Which also has weird IO) and a BenQ 32”
Also, I thought the screen curvature was too small/tight. So… also look at the Samsung Odyssey G9.
But how many years can the OS be upgraded even if the laptop can last over 10 years..
My MB Pro 15 is coming up to 8 years old and hasn't had the last two macOS updates, and there are no problems. In fact, it is now stable as it does not keep getting new updates.

I'm super happy on MB Air M1 .... i prefer the light weight despite MacBook Pro has its benefits, obviously ...

Will it last 12 hours of video calls?
Not sure, but pretty close.
I’ve done 8 hours and gone from 80% to about 25% battery. (My M3 Max is set up to only charge to 80% normally, hence the weird start charge.)
It was a mix of FaceTime, Teams, and Zoom, all over WiFi with encrypted VPN.
That workload mostly uses the “efficiency cores” on M3 Max. I did have the screen around half brightness for most of that time… which to be fair was still brighter than my Windows laptop at full brightness.
Batteries are not linear… so I’m not sure you can get to 12 full hours, but I’m confident you can do better with a Mac than any other laptop.
In response to Duet, I used it when I had Windows but now you don't even need it with Mac. My MacBook Pro automatically sees my iPad near it and allows me to automatically make it a second screen or be able to stretch my mouse over to it and choose apps from the mouse attached to the MacBook. It's actually kinda cool and completely eliminated the need for Duet.

Never say never… especially with Apple products!
It will only stop working when Apple stops supplying software updates. In about 7 or 8 years. My MacBook Pro 2015 is experiencing this problem at the moment. No more Netflix for me.
The Apple Silicon macbooks are great. And this means the Intel ones are dirt cheap. You could get a maxed out 2019 Intel 15" MBP for just 1.5K USD. Or, a maxed out 12" MacBook for 800 USD. Its a great deal for students. I have a maxed out 12 inch MacBook with the i7, 16gb of ram, and 512gb of SSD storage in the warm gold color. It does everything I need it to do, and I only got it because I found it for just 300 USD on ebay. An incredible deal!
Although I use apple products but when it comes to laptops, Win11/win12 PC or laptop definitely outperform Max OS laptops. especially windows 11/12 has integrated universal mobile and tablets devices into it.

I had the same service story with Apple who gave me a new laptop after out of warranty! I will never buy anything else, Apple for life.
I’ve been laboring with a late-2020 Intel MBP that was both the most expensive and most disappointing laptop I’ve ever owned; its performance has been a disappointment from day one :-(
I need Apple silicon to run a lot of AI workload I want to implement, so was about to pull the trigger on a maxed-out M3 Max MBP, then saw the M4 rumors that make it seem that Apple is going to push out a chip with significant Neural Processor enhancements :-/
Now I think I’m gonna buy an M1 Max to tide me over so I can get running LLMs locally at minimal cost now, then swap it for an M4 Max whenever those show up.
I'm still working on the latest MacBook Pro with Intel i9 processor, so time for an M3.
I loved this video... But I was very surprised by your praise of Apples service. Probably you got preferential treatment because you are a well-known vlogger. My experiences are completely the opposite. I am really surprised at the poor service and warranty you get from Apple at such a premium product.

Always upgrade to the newest Mac. The performance difference will make a minimal difference, you’ll always be broke and you really need it! 😂. Upgrade if you’re on an Intel Mac. Otherwise save your money and wait. It’ll only get faster again next year.

"the last laptop I'll ever need to buy" - unfortunately, not even close. These only have nascent generative AI abilities, the chips coming out in future years will be 10x more powerful. And AI is being infused into the OS, for obvious reasons - it adds tremendous productivity. This meme about the M3 being the last laptop, who is spreading it? It's just not true, but being oft repeated these days.
