From WIkipedia: Adele and Tedder arranged a second meeting and reconvened at Serenity West Studios in Los Angeles weeks later to write and record "Rumour Has It." In an interview, Tedder recalled his astonishment at the singer's musicality and vocal prowess after she completed the main vocals to the song in 10 minutes: "She sang it once top to bottom, pitch perfect, she didn't miss a note. I looked at the engineer then at her and said, 'Adele I don't know what to tell you but I have never had anyone do that in ten years'."[18]
You don't have to be a fan of Adele to appreciate how good of a singer she is ..
exactly....although i am a fan so.. maybe i dont get to say
The very first time I heard "Rollling in the Deep" on the radio, I had to immediately find out whose voice that was, it was so good. Been hooked ever since.
It’s extremely hard to not be a fan of Adele’s music. Much like ABBA she’s just too good.
@@davidelliott5843 Exactly. Great comparison.
Autotune not needed. I first got sucked into Rick's channel when UA-cam recommended his video about Autotune.
You can tell that Ryan Tedder produced this... a lot of his style can be heard. The hand claps, snaps, and stomps are something he does a lot with One Republic, along with the tambourine on the snare. Also the general laid back feel with the vocals. I think the layering with the organ and guitars is really cool, I didn't even notice some of the background instruments that were in this.
Rick, you could be on mainstream TV with this series, so interesting, clever and professionally executed. It's amazing how we appreciate a song at first and when you get hold of it and strip it to bits, then we realise why we love the song in the first place😀
I agree 100%
Agree - or a netflix series. Without sounding pompous - this is a masterclass in how to appreciate music, musicians & the production process
nonsense. He's far too good for mainstream TV.
Agree with this, and the comments below! It makes the appreciation of the songs in particular even more than before.
@@onesong2001 Agree. TV got boring and content like this (among many other types of content) is why youtube took off and became popular in the first place.
I remember the first time I heard this song I was blown away by how "classic cool" this random radio pop song was that was coming out of my car radio. Now that I think about it, a lot of good pop music was coming out around that time. It was like some mini pop music revolution that we had around 10 years ago with a lot of pop songs suddenly coming out that were refreshingly smart and interesting, musically.
This video really points out how important music appreciation is as a musical skill.
Adele has so many fantastic songs. It's not my genre but her voice is awesome, the arrangements are really cool, and I love it, how real instruments are played. So yeah, it's not my genre but Adele's music is really really great. And Adele by herself seems to be a super cool human.
Just watched an interview clip of Ryan Tedder (producer and co-writer) who said Adele recorded the lead vocal track on this song all in one take AND on the first take.
It's often said, and often isn't true
@@jongbong1912 My grandmother always said, "Never trust a man named Bong".
@@bsvenss2 hahaha LoL
Oh my god, NO BASS? I had no idea. That guitar riff makes it sound like this song has the best bass groove ever LOL. I love this song from Adele and loved your breakdown of it Rick. And thank you for showing us what you see onscreen.
This really changed my opinion of Adele and of what she represents musically, wow
Thanks for lifting the curtain on this track Rick. Adele and Ryan Tedder are masters at their craft and so interesting to hear the musical and production decisions deconstructed. A great example of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts.
The production of this track is great. But you can really sum up in one word 'what makes this song great' and it's "Adele." Wow, that voice!
Yes and no. Far from me to deny her amazing voice - I praised it in my comments above. Still, you have to be a good producer in order to enhance it, and build the whole song around in order not to hinder it but to make it shine, easy on paper but not in reality. This is a simple song as Rick points out, where less is more, easy for us to tell after the fact, though.
In my opinion simplicity like this, with only a few elements but each one perfectly placed and balanced, is a very complicated thing to achieve. The producer and artist also have to have the balls to stand behind such a sparse mix for a commercial release, really glad they did though.
Gerry James Edwards totally agree. However, IMO, the song gets really annoying. The production and mix is great, unfortunately the song itself falls short.
twstdelf her voice ain’t all that.
Yea she could sing the phone book and it would probably make us cry
As a jazz and modernist music aficionado I try to incorporate more complex and interesting progressions, melodies and rhythms into my production and playing. But this breakdown really shows that a song doesn't need to be complex at all to be hella catchy.
It was a great insight once again. Thank you, Rick!
When you say "I try to" it's 90% you're going to fail ... Don't try, think... Feel the moment, be in it and create...
@@HornetBojan Not everyone has exactly the same process, people work in whatever way works for them. Some people are thinkers rather than feelers and if that's what comes most naturally and works best for them then let them do it that way.
@@DEVILdRuMMinG You're right ... Just let go... Buddha mode ON:))
I have been in the biz for over 30 years on both sides of the glass.
And still there's so much to consider and learn.
Thank you good sir
Most of the songs on this series have new (for the time) and interesting production techniques. This is simply a great song with a great singer.
since you keep saying Motown, i would absolutely LOVE to hear someone be able to isolate and breakdown parts like this on some classic brilliant Motown songs.
Very good Idea!
Incredible how the orchestration of this song is complex and rich ! I have the feeling I hear it for the first time ! Thank you Rick for opening our eyes, our ears in fact 😉
Thanks for including the Pro Tools visuals, it helps a lot! :D
Ricks books are worth every penny....really.
A song and an artist that I detest. But interesting!
Adele - songwriter, backing vocals, lead vocals
Ryan Tedder - songwriter, producer, bass, electric guitar, piano, B-3 organ, drums, music programming, musical & string arrangements, recording engineer
Jerrod "Skins" Bettis - drums, acoustic guitar
Tom Elmhirst - audio mixing
Dan Perry - audio mixing assistant, additional vocals
Some real talent here
He said there was no bass here though?
@@ESchu-pm5mw yeah Wikipedia got that wrong, I edited it a while ago
9:44 oh my god that "bless your soul" is incredible! She jumps two full octaves by hitting that first note so damn high. Amazing. Thanks as always for this awesome series Rick.
That acoustic guitar part is actually really cool
Yes, I wonder how come Rick always nails those guitar parts!
@@HermelThePolyglot He is a vastly experienced musician and guitar player. Does not come easily.
I wish it were abit more uo front sometimes actualky, so i can more easily here it. It's cool
Ryan Tedder..a legend..please make a video on his talents..!
This is my favorite video you've made in this series! I love the episodes you do that are deeper in the recording than the songwriting. This really added a lot of value to a song I previously thought was just "pretty good"
Finally! Been dying to see how you navigate through the bits of the song. I love how it all seems like science, yet is musically astonishing.
I'm still catching up on your whole back catalogue of videos, so I don't know if you even see these comments anymore. I just want to say how much I love your channel. I love that you touch on deep musical theory, production techniques and technical issues, but that you also pay a lot of attention what really makes music enjoyable. I love the way you interpret feel and the need for a more organic, less 'perfect' sound to achieve real emotion. I love how your videos always make me feel encouraged to keep trying new things, and that although you have quite a list of impressive achievements, you never present yourself as being condescending or dismissive.
Have a great day.
I’m doing the same thing going through all of the WMTSG videos and I agree with everything you wrote!
Just want to let you know how much this helps people like myself who self produce at home on a D.A.W. You are showing us how great recordings are put together. I truly believe that my future recordings will be much better because of this. My grandson just sent me one of his first self produced recordings. It was really good considering he's only 15. I'm going to tell him to watch this series of your videos. I think he will also benefit greatly. THANK YOU RICK!
Best of this series yet! Love the new additions to the format. I'd be really interested to hear you talk about how each stem fits in the spectrum from a mixing standpoint too, as well as maybe note how the song builds tension/release. I get the most out of these videos from a songwriting/mixing perspective. Thanks for your hard work Rick!
I think the absence of Wah Wah makes this song perfect.
Funny guy.
hahaa!! only super fans of the channel would get that!!
@@ThouArtAGeek Yes I,m sorry I am 'Tim Pierce' right?
@@cgmahony yup
this song needs kirk hammett lol
Really enjoying your channel and the breakdowns of songs. Really scratches my music nerdy itch!
Thanks for lifting my spirits during this time of quarantine!
Great stuff as always! Would love to see anything by John Mayer, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and/or Prince. Some of my favorite songwriters!
YES TO ALL OF THESE!
great suggestions men
Yes human nature dont stop till you get enough
I’m right there with you!!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🔥🔥🔥😭
Yes! he needs to do John Mayer!!
Rick, I very much appreciate how in many videos you point out how organic, somewhat messy and/or imperfect techniques of composing/recording/performing can really make a song work. I love modern electronic music as well as a lot of 1960s tunes and it's quite useful to analyze why certain tracks connect so strongly with people.
Every time I watch one of your videos, I never fail to learn something or hear something buried in a track for the first time and I go back to the late 60's. Keep it up, Rick..👍
I now want to buy this album because of how you explained this song; thanks for such a great video, Rick.
It would be awesome to have a Beato community repository of all the stems and multitracks that Rick has shown and that other viewers have in their collections. Like a group archive
Rick
I can't express how grateful I am for you choosing to impart your music knowledge through these videos.
I am ordinary music listener with no musical knowhow what so ever . Your videos are helping me to appreciate these songs better.
Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Great vid, as allways. The detail of letting us get into the protools session made a huge difference. Loved it, hope you'll do more like this one. Thank you for your work dude!
Rick Beato, thank you for making these "What Makes This Song Great" videos. You share valuable information so please continue to make videos like these. Thank you again.
God I miss recording music. Good producers make all these little things come together. Something so simple is so complex.
Loved this episode. Great song. Your love for the craft is contagious, Rick. Especially enjoyed seeing the breakdown how you see it.
Wow, I’ve never bought a single tune from her before - you just compelled me to. Love what you do!
This was awesome. I love hearing Adele's voice in solo, no reverb - it's so rich.
It's incredible how the individual parts are uncomplicated yet fit together so well.
Phillip Lindholm If you haven't watched her NPR Tiny desk concert, go watch now. No effects, just that voice. I'm still not a huge fan, but she is absolutely one of the best voices of today.
Yes but most conversations about her focus on "that voice." She is lacking as "singer" in my view. (though I should listen to more). There has always been an emphasis on "the great voice" -especially in pop music. Less on great singing. There's even a music contest TV show "The Voice."
I would offer Badfinger's beautiful "Without You" (a truly great --and simple--song). Harry Nilsson takes Pete Hamm's moving performance to new heights with his "great voice" and great singing. Fast forward to Mariah Carey who though possessing a "great voice" almost butchers the song with unnecessary vocal gymnastics.
Rick, thanks for educating me on how this song was put together . In the seventies we used to have hi-fi reviewers who would review a pair of speakers, make comments like how listening to these speakers was as if someone had pulled the drapes open and the music became alive. I’m with friend on a yacht in France listening to Adele this evening. I remembered you had published a what made this song great and made them watch your video. Then we played the album track. They had heard it many times before but they commented that this was the first time they really appreciated it , heard the Motown drums, finger clicks, the Hammond. It was as if a veil had been lifted from the music, they were hearing it for the first time. 🙏 J
I love how granular this video is. I wish more artists/publishers would permit you to go here. I mean, this is a real music lesson.
This is the best series on UA-cam. I'm not a musician, but I just love seeing what goes into commercial music.
Hey Rick! I for one like the more pro tool orientated view. I also like it when you put up the scores it heps with my music reading! Thanks, I love this series :D
That little bridge section is freaking genius.
It's amazing how simple but intricate pop songs on the radio are.
Rick, Thank you for sharing the this, showing the session made it so much more interesting, this production is totally amazing and seems so old school with the B3, tambo and the finger snaps. Acoustic guitar part is genius. Showing these production techniques is totally inspiring
40!! Way to go Rick, love this series!
LOVE!!!!!!!! Seeing the Pro-Tools stems.
Best video format ever. Lots of ProTools screencasting, but also seeing Rick on instruments. This should be your permanent format for WMTSG.
Nothing but love for these vids. Perfect mix of entertaining and educational. Thank you, Rick!
Love her voice
This series is one of my favorite things on UA-cam. I come from a punk/ska background, so lessons and theory were never part of my learning process when it came to guitar and music in general. But as I've grown into other genres of music (inde, rock, jazz, soul) I've become increasingly interested in theory. Your videos have been a great introduction. I'd love to hear your take on something from the punk world. Fugazi is a band I've always been captivated by. I've always felt like there was more going on in their music than the average punk/hardcore band. A song like No Surprise has a dissonance to it. I'd love to hear exactly what's going on there. Just a suggestion.
This has suddenly leapt to my favorite channel. I’m learning tons of stuff with every video.
Brilliant video Rick. What a brilliant song, this is such an amazing Insight..
great job!
“As you can see, the mix is very simple”
I think this is my favorite song of Adele. The swagger and confidence that Adele projects in this song is just *chef's kiss*. At first, I thought that most of Adele's songs are just sad.. I wish she would sing some songs like this one.
Your my go to rabbit hole of why songs sound the way they do...love,love,love it!!!
You're doing beautiful work Rick Beato. Thanks so much!
That drum loop is a killer that's what makes this song special I love Adele's music so special in todays mainstream crap
When I listen to complex multitracks, full of small touches here and there, I always wonder how much I must praise the producer for fine-tuning the end result, specially on simple songs like this one, that can be transformed completely by the arrangements.
Thank you Rick for doing this series, it is mind- bendingly informative. I’ve never heard nor paid attention to the incredible guitars in this song. Your ear is scary-good and the fact you take the time to show the chords is awesome. After watching your videos I hear these songs in a whole new way. It is also RAD to see the ProTools session. I’ve heard Ryan Tedder say that on this song, Adele performed one take of her lead vocal. Stunning!
Awesome breakdown of a great song Rick. It's really cool how everything fits together.
Loving this series, would love to see a Coheed episode
Rick you are a legend.
Brilliant breakdown. Really enjoyed it. I'm trying to compose, record and mix and this is very helpful. A big thank you
I love this new format much better! I love getting to see the actual Pro Tools Session
Her voice has an amazing resonance even without the reverb
It's great to see you covering another charting modern song!
If i could request a band, i'd recommend Elbow, who have charted a handful of times in the UK and really don't get enough love in the US. A great song to look at would be The Bones of You
Series getting better and better, showing the protools session was awesome
This is fantastic! You should use this format for everything in the What Makes This Song Great series.
Great breakdown on a great song. Love Adele's voice.

Love your breakdowns and constant flow of music theory. I really appreciate your musicianship. Top notch! How do you get those stems? Would you ever break down some John Denver? Thank you.
Being able to visually follow along really helps me keep up with you. I usually have to replay a few seconds at several different points during these sessions, but not this time! Looking forward to seeing you do it this way more often! Wouldn't even mind watching a revisit of one of the more complicated songs you've already covered if you could show us your view just like you do here. Great Video! Thanks!!!
You're just SOOO brilliant!! Thank you x 100!! /Proud member of the Beato Club.
Please do "Streets" by U2. It was proving so complicated it was almost wiped on purpose so the rest of the album could be done.
I think Adele is such a talented beautiful lady . She has certainly destroyed stereotypes and let her talent shine through . I would love to hear analysis of breakthrough songs and bands . Especially groundbreaking and trend defining songs . Thinking Rage Against The machine ,Killing In The Name Of . Pixies etc . These are awesome and know you busy . This is so informative. Amazing this software is available to everyone. Wonder if there is any more need for studios . I suppose you will always have to have excellent acoustics , but the cost of producing albums must have dropped so much . Thank you .
Hey I love seeing the protools screen while you show us the element, more videos with this format please!
Best one of this series yet! Thanks for displaying the Protools screen.
Thanks Rick, another great work on another great song/performer. As many of us are making requests don't blame me if I'm making mine. Something from Billy Joel, any song would be good but I'm dreamin of your breakdown of some of the jazzy tunes from 52nd Street b side, such as Rosalinda's eyes, Stiletto or Until the night. That would be terrific! thank you so much.
Love this series! Would love to see a Placebo episode

teppolundgren Excuse me?
I hope you keep this format. Good stuff. As usual.
One of the best ones yet, great job. I would love a new episode on some artists you already did like Pearl Jam or RHCP.
Do 'Spice Girls - Wannabe' please! Yes, I'm serious! That song has some amazing production and it defined the late 90s pop sound.
Billy Idol: Eyes Without a Face
Why is it great?
1.) If nothing else, Sal Cuevas' bass line. What great time, feel, phrasing, and tone.
I'd no more expect to find Sal playing electric bass on a Billy Idol track than the general public would expect to find Carol Kaye behind the bass parts on so many memorable classic pop hits.
2.) Steve Stevens' iconic guitar riff during the 'rap' section puts us in touch with the air guitarist that secretly lives inside each and every one of us.
3.) And who doesn't love copious amounts of Roland TR-808 handclaps?
Dusnt nd 2 review it now
I love this tune! I love this series! I've learned so much.
Love to see the protools screen as you explain the song. Quite interesting and pedagogical to me. Great idea! Thank you from Spain!
My favorite Adele song!
Thanks Rick your videos helped me make better production choices for my last song!
Glad this wasn't blocked! Great breakdown as always. Thanks Rick!
This is a amazing production analysis tutorial
Thank you Rick
Old sounds become new again, it inspires me that is album is basically the best selling album of the decade, if it’s done right, people like real music.
She sure can sing can't she!
You're a master at dissecting these tracks, Rick. With the way that these videos reveal so much more about the artistry involved than you could ever glean as a casual listener, by soloing parts of the multi-tracks and describing both the recording techniques, production decisions AS WELL as the music theory behind what we hear, I'm really surprised that some wily record exec hasn't cottoned on and begged you to cover someone in their stable - rather than getting your vids demonetized and blocked. The perception that popular music is thrown together by a computer whizz and an algorithm is pervasive and contributes to the unwillingness of people to pay for the end product. Your work dispels that notion, and I would have thought that works hugely in their favor.
Oh, and I'm only 44. The length of my comments is just 'cos I'm a verbose muh'fuh'.
I don’t play any instruments, and my boyfriend plays several. We both love your videos. I’m learning a lot from it. I finally recognized the word syncopation without him having to say “the thing Two Door Cinema Club’s bassist does in most of their songs”
There is a reason Ryan Tedder is my favorite song writer out of them all and the production on this song shows why.
Normally I'm a rock and metal guy but I LOVE Adele and Pink.
I love her 'Skyfall' song...and even made a cover of it...with my own artistic flair...Adele is indeed a talented musician...love you, Rick!!! 💗💗💗
Mr. Beato, in your channel i have everything i want and more, god bless you and your family!
