So many people admire Basia's singing voice but very few know that she also composed this piece with Danny White, wrote the lyrics and co-produced it too. And that's the way almost all her songs were created.
Basia is a phenomenal singer from Poland. I have had this album for years since it first charted circa 1990. This beautiful song, "Astrud," is a homage to Astrud Gilberto, the phenomenal singer from Brazil who sang the bossa nova song, "The Girl from Ipanema." Frank Sinatra loved the bossa nova sound! Astrud Gilberto just passed away. May she rest in peace eternally.
Her voice even performing live sounds exactly like in her recording in digital just a brilliant world jazz,soul & samba icon..she's also brilliant composer she wrote most of her songs
Astrud also was influential to singer/songwriters such as Suzanne Vega, Sade and of course, Basia. Astrud's emotive yet plaintive singing informed all three's approach to their own signature styles. #RIP, Astrud.

One of the absolute best songs to come out of the 80's. This song is timeless, I can loop it for an hour and it never gets old. Brings back so many memories of falling in love in Los Angeles
One of the nicest and most professional artists with whom I’ve ever had the pleasure of working. A real pro and a total sweetheart. She sent my Polish mother christmas cards (In Polish).
I had heard Basia's "Astrud" on the radio here in the US, I believe, the fall of 1986. I knew Astrud was the "Girl From Ipanema." I was in Leicester, England about 6 months later and noticed that Basia was opening for Billy Ocean. I was outside the concert hall mid-afternoon talking to a woman who was a Billy Ocean groupie. She had photos and knew everyone in his band. Unbeknownst to me, she got word to Basia that there was a guy outside that had come all the way from the US to see her. I'm outside and here she comes with Danny White. What a nice jester. When back in the US I mailed a Patty Austin cassette tape to Basia's fan club. A year later she is touring the US and I get a signed letter and promotional material from her.
Love hearing this and I’m not surprised at all. In every interview I’ve seen of her she comes across as totally down to earth and kind-just radiates off of her. So nice when a favorite artist (of whom Basia is one of mine) turns out to be a great person, too. I gotta say I’m super jealous you had the opportunity to not only meet her, but work with her as well. In what capacity was your association with her, if you don’t mind me asking?

I have been listening to Brazilian music since the mid 60s which gave us plenty to talk about but was hard to find until UTube came along.
Brazilian Bossa Nova by Basia the best Bossa singer. She does like Astrud the late Brazilian Bossa Nova singer. Astrud was once married to João Gilberto one of the fathers of Bossa Nova. João Gilberto passed away recently in Rio. His daughter Bebel still singing Bossa Nova.
Love Basia, SOS and of course Sade too. Funny how almost anyone who’s a fan of one is a fan of the other(s). Amazingly crafted, classy music with beautiful women with beautiful voices at the forefront. I’d add Patti Austin & Lisa Stansfield to that ticket as well.
Basia is the reason I discovered the whole Bossa Nova music and its Artists, back in 1997 I came across to her album London Warsaw New York since then I fell in love with her music and while researching for more of her music I discovered Bossa Nova when found out who was Astrud the title of this song, from the heart ❤ thanks a million Basiafan for sharing this and other videos of this magnificent singer

Absolutely a great recording of a great popular singer. It sounds and feels like I am there in the studio with them back in 1988. Where has the sophisticated talent of Basia and a few others like her gone? They have been drowned out by junk since the mid-1990's. We need a revival of the 80's.
Glad I got to see her live in Waikiki's Blue Note. Beautiful woman with a beautiful voice with superb talent with a top notch band and cohort Matt making an incredible composer/collaborator duo . Poland must be supremely proud of her. I want to try her family's ice cream, gotta be good.
singing, pure crystal clear singing on the note and even slight belting comes without any pressure... not yelling still singing, wish some of the current pop stars could show us some skills too... today it's all about belting and yelling... it's a pity..

The SF Bay Area had three awesome radio stations back then. KKSF, KBLX, and 105.3. All the other stations played corporate garbage. I discovered David Benoit, Basia, and The Primitives on these stations.
Compared to the released track that they obviously thought was too dangerously jazzy with its brilliiant baritone sax solo by British sax player Ronnie Ross, they gave the solo to guitar (much safer) and relegated this bari player (not Ronnie) to a few riffs and dodgy dancing. Like they ALWAYS do! They would have done it to Getz if Carson had had Astrud on.
She’s singing this live, no autotune, no second or third takes, just perfect perfect pitch. Now that’s what I call a real singer.
