The Transportation Security Administration currently states that corkscrews without blades are acceptable in carry-on bags, while those with small blades must be placed in a checked bag (as with any sharp object, they prefer it be sheathed or wrapped to prevent baggage handlers and inspectors from being injured). Scissors, if packed in carry-on, they must be less than 4 inches from the pivot point. Any sharp objects in checked bags should be sheathed or securely wrapped to prevent injury to baggage handlers and inspectors.

Until one day when I tossed my keys into the bin to be X-rayed and the loud clunk alerted a TSA agent. She opened the knife and said the sharp blade was not allowed in carry on. The scissors are small enough to pass tsa check. I think the limit is 3 inches so even the leatherman raptor is travel friendly. My travel Vic is scissors and openers with a Phillips and fine screwdriver on the underside.
@@FittoSurvive I haven’t had any trouble, however, I have always had to explain it to the tsa agents and allow them to examine it to make sure it meets their criteria for safe travel. Thank you! I don't remember exactly, but seems like the "stone" wheel on the left is a 120 grit and the disk on the right is a diamond coated wheel for sharpening. Basically on the left is course, it goes through the metal quickly. Then once I get close to where I want to be, I use the one of the left for more precision.
Great build. Not airline friendly for Aust. as you can’t carry on corkscrew or scissors but replace the corkscrew with a screwdriver and remove the scissors and there’d be no dramas.
I like the Evolution (e.g. Wenger) scissors and pliers because of their spring design. Are they interchangeable with the original Victorinox designs? Thanks, Tom KC3QAC
I've not tried placing the Wenger style pliers in a 91mm SAK. But I agree, their spring is much more dependable. I place the Wenger style scissors in the 84mm SAK though. Takes some modifying, but it works.
I am still working on that. There are a couple of options, but haven't found any solutions yet. I will post the project to UA-cam when I get it all figured out.
I was able to carry on the plane. Just have to put it in your luggage and NOT your carry on. That goes for guns too as you won't be able to access it until after you get your baggage. Not 100% sure if that rule applies to international flights. Fine job! Thanks for sharing.
Torx screws and pivot barrels can be found from DeCustomForge (you can find him on Instagram). The parts for reassembling this knife were all "harvested" from other SAKs.
The scalpel blade is removable. That's what makes it "travel friendly". So, before you fly, you toss scalpel blade leaving just the scalpel holder. After arriving, you attach a new scalpel blade. 👍🏻
Instead of modifying the backspring for the can/bottle openers could you just use the backspring from the original slot? the awl and corkscrew look the same on the attachment point then you could keep the keyring/lanyard.. I've never customized one but I'm going to real soon
The can/bottle opener spring is 0.3 mm thinner than the original blade spring and corkscrew. So, if you were to use the openers back spring, then the corkscrew will be too thick.
SAK-mod idea: A metal insert - into the blade-slot - to prevent the blade from closing when open. [Info below.] May I suggest this as a product for you to offer? I would definitely purchase one for each of my SAKs. Here is the info: Channel name: STORN Video title: Victorinox DIY LOCK for 90mm
I subbed. Great vid. Is this a victorinox ad? Lmfao. I have a 40 year old victorinox prestine, barely ever out of case, sadly has normal clock but now I'm thinking upgrade to led light
Thanks for the sub! Definitely not a Victorinox ad... In fact, I've got a feeling that my picture is in the post office in Switzerland. "Wanted for defacing Swiss Army Knives". Or something like that. 🤣🤣🤣
Why did you modify the knife spring to fit the openers, instead of just using the original openers spring (thereby keeping the keyring)? Love your work, but it seems like you rushed through a few of your decisions without explaining them.
I had to keep the knife spring because it is the only one that can accommodate the corkscrew. The openers spring is 0.3 mm thinner than the blade spring. This is why I had to use some washers next to the can and bottle openers.
I apply lube after assembly because I noticed that if I apply it during assembly, then the brass shavings stick to the lube and has to be cleaned out and replaced.
Hi 🤗 Thankyou so much for this video. I have a standard swiss champ and a swiss voyager that basically has the same digital watch scale and pen/pick ect scale shape. I'm.looking to fit the pair of scales to the champ body. The scary part is removing the scales without cracking them as they are dicontinued and very rare. The other challange making holes on the layer for the scale to seat true. I'm going to do this without removing the rivets, so its going to be long tricky work with the dremel. I also noticed you was able to snap back on the scales with very little damage to the rivet holes ! Very nice work. Any tips for me 🤔
Hey! Glad. That you enjoyed the video. Removing the scales has to be done slowly and carefully. You don't want to damage the scales, but also there are electronics that protrude on the back of the scale that you dony want to damage either. Making holes on the Swisschamp liner REALLY is going to be quite the challenge. You might want to measure them up before you start, because if u remember correctly the liner that goes next to the on board computer is a bit thicker, don't know if that will cause you any trouble or not... My advice, take it slow, work your way around the rivets. Don't just force from one side. I can't really give any advice about making holes in the liner...
@@FittoSurvive Thankyou. I'm going to make a template of the liner and apply that directly to the champ liner. Yes I've noticed the voyager liner is thicker ! I'm guessing the button will stick out a tenth of a mill more ... I hope so 🤔 I'll take plenty of photos.
Also, your the only video.I can find of digital scale transplanting to another unit. I would think it would be more a more popular mod. Those digital clock units are worth a lot of money these days to collectors.

The electronic scale is original from Victorinox. It can be found on the Victorinox XAVT or the Victorinox Traveller. But, it is not easily swapped. The first liner has to have cutouts to match the electronics.
Great video and great job as usual! Question: The scalpel seemed to have the stud protruding on both sides at the beginning... Wasn't it possible to have it mounted flipped around? Would have been one hand opening (with right hand :) ) in that case.

I have traveled with full size scissors in my bag. They had to ask the ranking officer but they let me go so I don't think you would have an issue. I was wondering if the new blade contacts a liner or spring when closed. It looks like it does. That would likely dull that part of the blade very quickly but may be resolved with a bit of grinding. Just curious.
Cool, a couple of people said that they were able to fly with scissors too. Should be easy to fly with this setup then. I adjusted the scalpel so that the blade does not tap the spring.
@@FittoSurvive A heatbag (the type filled with wheat that you microwave) would also work, that's what's suggested to help soften the glue for replacing phone batteries
Do you think it would be possible to fit the scalpel Blade and the combotool from the compact together in one layer? Or is it even possible to use the knife spring with the scalpel?
@@lucasbraun9783 Sometimes you can find people selling SAK parts on Ebay, but not all of the time. It's easiest to find a donor knife and take parts from it.
Forgetting for a moment the things that you'd take off to make it TSA approved, is there anything from other SAK's that you'd replace all of the sharp bits with to really be TSA 'approved' (well at least less of a problem) and still be quite compact? That would be a video I'd like to see.
Certain tools can be easily substituted. Others not so much. Like, if I was making this knife for me, I'd definitely remove the scissors and there's nothing to substitute it with. I could replace the scissors with pliers for example though.

@@FittoSurvive Humble tip for keychain carry on custom builds with no keyring loop; Just hook the small ring to the hook-tool and close it. It allmost closes and is in my opinion more than secure enough to hang from.... So if you attach the small keyring to your bigger keyset, you can unhook and hook the knife easily by just pullin in the right direction... It is atleast a makeshift solution if needed on the go that is worth a mental note....☺️
I am not certain. But I do not think that the electronics in the scale are waterproof. So, I would definitely not submerge it in water. Washing the tools individually and washing between the tools with a moist tooth brush would be the best option.

That was great skill to watch but I can't help thinking just put it in the hold luggage or maybe there is some essential reason to carry it on a flight?
Yeah, that would be the easy way to do it. 😂😝
NEVER be without SOME tool on you, esp pliers. They never see my Swiss Tech "Swiss Key." Gives me a small knife for oranges and such. Put it on your key ring.

@@neoaliphant Interesting mods! I haven't gotten into many of the Leatherman mods yet.
@@FittoSurvive Do you know Max lvl edc?
@@CharlesHeller Yes! I know Dominic. He's really talented!
The scissors are small enough to pass tsa check. I think the limit is 3 inches so even the leatherman raptor is travel friendly. My travel Vic is scissors and openers with a Phillips and fine screwdriver on the underside.
WRONG !
The blade limit to street carry in many countries is 3 inches.
That doesn't mean you can carry smaller than 3 inch blade on a plane ! LMAO
Interesting. So, you've flown with that and not had any trouble?
@@timsimco9471 You mean the full length of the scissors, right? Or the cutting edges can be to 3 inches?
@@FittoSurvive I haven’t had any trouble, however, I have always had to explain it to the tsa agents and allow them to examine it to make sure it meets their criteria for safe travel. Red sak scales tend to be a red flag, so I have to allow them to do their job and not rush them so you have to plan accordingly time wise and not be a jerk going through security.
@@timsimco9471 I'm sure being cooperative and polite helps the process a lot.
Please buy a pillar drill. If you need to apply heat to the scales a hot water bottle can apply a lot of heat safely.

Got me nervous when he opened the scalpel like nobody's business 😬 😅
😎 No worries.
What got me worried was the machining with the blade installed. If I had tried that it would demonetized for the gore.

Good idea . Excelent . Congratulation!
Thank you! I appreciate it.
Great build! thanks for sharing :) What is your "setup" for the two grinding wheels?
@@FittoSurvive excellent! Thanks
Beautiful work
Thank you!
I feel like what you added is how that knife should come.
Right? It would make sense.
Great build. Not airline friendly for Aust. as you can’t carry on corkscrew or scissors but replace the corkscrew with a screwdriver and remove the scissors and there’d be no dramas.
Thank you.
The scissors make sense. It's odd that the corkscrew would cause trouble, but I don't doubt it. 😅
That’s got an alarm clock? Damn!
It does! And much more in it.
It looks like you could have put in something opposite to the scalpel.
Nice job.
There's definitely space for something, but the spring wouldn't allow it.
Love your builds so much. Have you ever considered if a civivi baby banter blade would fit in a SAK?
Thank you! I have not size up the Civivi. Do you think it would fit?
@@FittoSurvive lengthwise it looks about perfect, but it’s probably too thick (from the edge to the spine) even with modifications to the pivot hole.
@@My_Name_Is_David Hmmm... That could be a problem.
I would have gone for exacto style blade as those are easier to replace but I dunno where you could salvage a holder from.
Fitting an exacto style blade would be pretty complicated.
Cool modification and build. Do you have any ideas of what you could swap out the parcel hook for? Cheers Stu
Thank you!
The parcel hook has a unique shape, so unfortunately I have not found a replacement for it.
You are going to give moral offense to the Clan of The Parcel Hook.
@@CharlesHeller 🤣🤣🤣 For sure.
@@CharlesHeller Hahahaha, yes! I love the hook!
I've been watching lots of your videos on these mods , is it possible to include any kind of lock for the blade?
I am still working on that. There are a couple of options, but haven't found any solutions yet. I will post the project to UA-cam when I get it all figured out.
I was able to carry on the plane. Just have to put it in your luggage and NOT your carry on. That goes for guns too as you won't be able to access it until after you get your baggage. Not 100% sure if that rule applies to international flights. Fine job! Thanks for sharing.
Definitely is not a problem with check in luggage.
Thanks. 👍🏻👍🏻
@fittosurvive Could you please tell me what is the thickness of the brass pins on the Victorinox knives? Thank you.
Hey, the brass pins are 2.5mm and 2.2mm.
@@FittoSurvive That's great, thanks a lot for your reply. That's much appreciated!
@@StarsoftheStreets You are welcome.
Or you can simply remove the knife layer without any modifications, right?
I can remove the blades and replace them with the can and bottle opener. It still requires modifications, but not as difficult.
where do you get the mini torq hex screws and a parts to rejoin the scales of the knife?
Torx screws and pivot barrels can be found from DeCustomForge (you can find him on Instagram). The parts for reassembling this knife were all "harvested" from other SAKs.
If you could put the scalpel blade into your checked luggage, why would you not just put the complete, unmodified Victorinox knife in there instead?
Love it mate.!
Thanks!
SAK-mod idea:
A metal insert - into the blade-slot - to prevent the blade from closing when open.

May I suggest this as a product for you to offer?

What were the three (actually two) springs you used for the Havalon layer, they look like they came from the fish scale remover layer?
The 3 springs are from the descaler. I substituted them for 2 saw springs.
@@FittoSurvive now Heinnie in the UK stock Havalon I'm sorely tempted to try your mod 😀

Could you have added a magnifying glass in the empty space?
Unfortunately, no.
This meets TSA published requirements. I don’t think it would be an issue but you always have to hope an agent isn’t having a bad day.
It's unfortunate that it comes down to the mood of the agent on that particular day. 😣
I subbed.
Will the off-center hole in the brass spacer not affect the operation of either the new knife or the Havalon tool?
I've literally made hundreds of these modifications with the pivot bore like that. Haven't had any issues yet. *knocks on wood. 😋
👍🏼 I like it. I’ve heard they will take any tool. Blade or not. Beware!!!
Thanks. Yeah, I am sure that they can. 😕
This is why I had to use some washers next to the can and bottle openers.
noticed there was no lube used. does the action feel the same even after u cleaned all the lube ?
I apply lube after assembly because I noticed that if I apply it during assembly, then the brass shavings stick to the lube and has to be cleaned out and replaced.
Hi 🤗
Thankyou so much for this video.
@@FittoSurvive
Thankyou.
I'm going to make a template of the liner and apply that directly to the champ liner. Yes I've noticed the voyager liner is thicker ! I'm guessing the button will stick out a tenth of a mill more ... I hope so 🤔
I'll take plenty of photos.
Also, your the only video.I can find of digital scale transplanting to another unit. I would think it would be more a more popular mod. Those digital clock units are worth a lot of money these days to collectors.
@@video-oq1hj Yeah, they really have become expensive and difficult to find.

Can you add a link to the gel pad you used to remove the scalpel blade?
It is actually a plastic blade remover. Here is a link. amzn.to/3BTEmVF
Nice build! However I think it's still illegal for air travel - at least in Europe, as it contains a screwdriver.
Thanks! Wow, you think the screwdriver would cause trouble on the plane too? Didn't think that it would, but who knows... Could be.
Just look at the display trashcan of confiscated items at the airport security check… tons of scissors in there (even tiny nail cuticle scissors).
Great build BTW.
That is true. They really do go overboard, but again, that is their decision to make apparently.. 😒
@@FittoSurvive Better to err on the safe side, IMHO. One can’t argue with officials: I had to dispose of an empty cigarette lighter (even though I checked online and it said that empty lighters are permitted).

Does anyone know what the springs are from that we're used to support scalpel??? I am going to try to build my own "travel-friendly" SAK.
I used the saw springs.
Where can I buy that electronic scale gadget to go on my 91mm Ranger??? Ooooh...
The electronic scale is original from Victorinox. It can be found on the Victorinox XAVT or the Victorinox Traveller. But, it is not easily swapped. The first liner has to have cutouts to match the electronics.
Great video and great job as usual!
Question:
The scalpel seemed to have the stud protruding on both sides at the beginning... Wasn't it possible to have it mounted flipped around? Would have been one hand opening (with right hand :) ) in that case.
Thank you!
The scalpel holder could be placed on the other side of the knife, I'd have to use a different set of scales without the corkscrew cutout though.
@@FittoSurvive yeah, that I understand, but I meant flipping it (together with it's springs, of course) in that same layer where you put it (unsure if there is enough space on the top side, though.... I thing the lower part of the SAKS is a couple mm wider than the top)

Form which Tool Are the springs you used for the scalpel?
Are they from the saw which you used as a template?
Yes, they are from the saw.

Or is it even possible to use the knife spring with the scalpel?
It would not be possible to place the scalpel and combination tool on one layer.
or is it possible to buy just the spring separate?

Great mod! Looks great and perfectly finished. Corkscrews are prohibited on airplanes as far as I know and that size scissors same. But incredible nevertheless.
Thank you!
It's rough to say, seems like there are so many different answers out there. It'd be awesome if you could mail the tool in to be "certified" TSA approved.

Humble tip for keychain carry on custom builds with no keyring loop;
Just hook the small ring to the hook-tool and close it. It allmost closes and is in my opinion more than secure enough to hang from....
So if you attach the small keyring to your bigger keyset, you can unhook and hook the knife easily by just pullin in the right direction...
It is atleast a makeshift solution if needed on the go that is worth a mental note....☺️

how to wash up this knife, it's water resisted?
I am not certain. But I do not think that the electronics in the scale are waterproof. So, I would definitely not submerge it in water. Washing the tools individually and washing between the tools with a moist tooth brush would be the best option.
