The Qanun musical instrument has been around for nearly 5,000 years and has evolved a lot during very long periods of time in the beginning, known by the Pharaohs and the Assyrians, and then by the Arabs and the Turks, and the Arabs and the Turks developed it until it reached this new and beautiful form in which there are several tones with sound layers So many, this musical instrument is a mixture of ancient music history from different civilizations and modern guitar music.

@@mr.turtle2345 well I remember her saying that in kindergarten her teacher noticed how she was fascinated with music like this and encouraged her to play the Qanun instrument. I’m sorry if I got it a little mixed up. I speak the western dialect while she spoke the eastern but I understood a lot.

She says that at first she wanted to become a pianist and when piano teacher listened her very very first time she advised her mother to bring her to piano lessons but her mother decided that at first she needs to learn professional vocal and then to learn to play on some instrument and one day a year after that when she was already studying in The Musical College after Alexander Spendiarian she listened how young students play qanon and especially she felt in love with playing of Meri Musinian(Very popular qanon player- young Armenian musician) and she also liked the teacher Tsovinar Hovhannisyan and she decided that qanon is the best instrument for her

@@lolitaapplewhite8128 yea but the Assyrians in Mesopotamia were Iraqi, and this instrument existed far before the Turks came into the Middle East. It is safe to say it is a Middle-Eastern/Arabic instrument.
Interesting that you mention the word canon, it could be derived from qanun but I don't think the Greeks gave the instrument its name. The word qanun is not pronounced as 'cannon' or 'canon', if I were to write its pronunciation it would be: Aanoon.
Also, I don't think this instrument came from China. Similar conceptual instruments such as the Lyre existed in Sumeria, one of and if not then the oldest civilization in the world. Most probably, the qanun can trace its ancestry to similar instruments, and probably eventually found its way in China from the Silk Road. In fact, this is what happened with the Oud, it eventually reached Japan as the Biwa.
Funny that mention the Greeks, because it is rumored that a Greek philospher built the first Oud instead. But on a side note, most Mediterranean countries have very similar cultures (especially towards the east) and thus most of them play similar instruments. If you listen to Greek music it is very similar to 'Levantine' music. The Greeks also have a dance called the Zorba, which is very similar to the Levant's Dabke.

*Edit* : I am greek and i play qanun 13 years now, i always thought that it was a greek instrument and i got really confused after some years of playing when i randomly read that its "Arabic" although i totally forgot about it 😅🤣
Lately i've lost my mood to play and i was searching here on UA-cam to watch some and get inspiration etc
While being here Arabics and Turkish are fighting about the origins of this instrument and each on of them claims them ! Reading the comments i took Arabic side but i was still concern about it so i did a research !!
I remembered that an known old ancient greek philosopher Aristotelis talks about an instrument that resembles qanun but he was calling it "trigoneio or epigoneio"
So after some research i found out that qanun as we know it today first appeared over 2.000 years ago in Ancient Greece 🇬🇷! And at the time it was called "trigono" or "epigoneio" witch is literally the name of the shape that instrument has ! There were also old drawing on vases etc from that time. Although qanun at the time looked kinda different, later on it was used a lot at the time of the Byzantine empire and the name changed to "psalterium". Nowadays qanun in Greece is connected to the chanting church music we use in our orthodox churches although we don't use the instrument inside the church, i grew up knowing this and thats why this instrument also helped me to become a master at chanting church music so i can guess that at the Byzantine time was also used for the chanting music !!
Now i don't know what happened next and how this instrument traveled to mesopotamia and became qanun !
Although i am happy the name of the instrument still keeps its name originally from ancient Greece witch as i wrote before comes from the word κανών witch means rule based on that music rule about the strings "the longer the deepest and the shortest the highest" witch was actually certified by Pithagoras.
If you don't believe me and you wanna know make a search of your own 🙃. Sooner or later you will end up there 😁 But lets be realistic, if you search ANYTHING you will end up either in Ancient Greece or Acient China ! And this is the hard truth.

The today's qanun is created in the arab world, but it's more recent ancestor, was in the Byzantine Empire, which was a religious orthodox christian chanting 50 strings instrument, called "psalterion". Arabs visited the Empire, interested on the greek music, so they borowed the instrument & then they evoluted that with plus strings. The older ancestor of the "psalterion" on the other side, maybe was the ancient greek instrument trigonion or kanon/κανών, which had a similar triangular shape!!!
The instrumental base of the qanun is ancient greek, the string evolution belongs to arabs and then from the Minor Asia is returned back to Greece in 1922 at it's turkish string version!!! In Greece & Turkey we have the same qanun, in arab world is bigger, in Armenia is smaller!!! That's all!!!
@@Fallacia_Uplifting Arabic word “qanun” is derived from the ancient Greek. this is true, but the Greek has nothing to do with this musical instrument which was invented by the Arab scholar “Al-Farabi” in Iraq in the 8th century and it was given the name "alnuzha" back then and later its name was changed to "alqanun" which means the base in Arabic, because its the instrument that collect all Arabic musical scales. Arabs did not visit the Byzantine Empire, in fact the Arabs conquered the empire and the only thing they took from the ancient Greek was philosophy, it was translated into Arabic and from here the word “qanun” and some other words came into Arabic, then Greek philosophy was transmitted to the rest of the world, thanks to the translation of the Arabs After being obliterated for centuries, no one knows anything about it.
