I like that you showed an area that wasn't working first and then finding a hole at another beach. I never thought of this and know I'll know forever. It makes sense, go where the waves aren't breaking. Awesome.
dude this video bring me a lot of memories from my childhood when I was a kid my family had a house in the beach and we fishing there daily I discover these sandcrabs one day and I tried to use them as a bait but I never catch a fish with them watching this video makes me realize why, I always killed them before using them as a bait lol now I kinda want to go fishing and try again but its really far from where I live house and I don't have car anyway, thank you for the video. I'm on the east coast and I know the sand crabs have different names wherever you may come from but we call them sand fleas and I've have found out if you hook them towards their back side ( middle ) they fish better, we fish with them for pompano, red drum, black drum, sheepshead there's so many fish that will eat them. Larry
Yep Larry , here on the Right Coast they are Sand flee . I was in Caly for a bit an was told Lobster ( lobsta ) don't have claws , since then I don't listen to Left coast fishermen
We have sand fleas witch are about the size of dog fleas and also sand crabs these that he is using are about the size of a silver dollar in from Oregon
I got hooked on to your channel 2 weeks ago and i've already completed watching all your videos (131 videos).. My 7 yr old son likes watching your catch and cook and camp videos.. You are too good!!! I live in San Jose and i feel like taking up fishing now!!!
This was a helpful video. I've been a trout and bass fisherman all my life and the ocean is a mystery to me. Describing how to read structure and holes was a huge help. Thanks
So excited for your new vids. Started watching you because i dont have the luxury of a boat so your vids showed whats possible from the shore i enjoy the boat vids but so happy youre still doing shore fishing too

Ill definitely come by outdoor pro shop next time i visit..love the videos..thankyou
Yesterday caught a 21 inch striped bass using a hard shell sand crab (couldn't find many soft shell) at Ocean Beach. Followed your method of hooking the sand crab at the butt away from the spine so it was alive and kicking. I used a hi-low rig, but for my sinker I used a 2 ounce Kastmaster with a bucktail. That way I could do both bait and lure fishing. Caught the striped bass on a size 4 hook. Followed your method of using a 30lb leader ... didn't get a single tangle ... fished for a couple of hours ... using Celilo 9ft spinning rod (PK's recommendation) that can only take up to 2 ounces ... really light tackle .... thanks for your advice ... great video :)
Dude I love your vids. I always was open to trying new experiences, but ever since I started watching your videos, my interest in fishing grew even bigger. I already was fascinated and intrigued by the outdoors and wildlife and fishing, but watching your videos is amazing! You truly are an amazing inspiration bro, I hope to learn how to fish like you 😅😅😅. That's what I just really want to do
Strange 7s well why do you think I wrote this comment dummy? Cause I'm sick of doing just that. Being in the outdoors is my passion. I never get to go anywhere though. I don't even know how to fish, but that's one of my passions as I was always interested in it as a kid. How do you expect me to do something I want to do when no one else wants to do it?
BazuluWolf I say if your old enough with a driver license then just drive out there and fish, best way to learn is to go and do it. You would be surprised how many tips u will get from local fishermen's.
NoSkilljutsu oh I know. Last time I went fishing was when I was 8 with my mom, and a bunch of local fishermen where there, and boy did they gave us a bunch of tips. I was doing a bunch of things wrong 😂😂 but yeah, they ended up catching a brown bass for me and decided to give it to us because I didn't catch anything. and yeah I agree, I don't think there's anything better than learning yourself and from the help of other people. I mean, I'm not far from getting a license but, when I do I'll go do just that.

I HAVE A 42' SPORTFISH AND I FISH ALL UP AND DOWN THE EAST COAST . IM FROM NEW JERSEY AND IVE NEVER SEEN A SAND FLEE THAT BIG AND IVE BEEN FISHING FOR 30 YRS ! GREAT VIDEO BROTHER !!
Just to let you know, because those sand fleas do have somewhat of an exoskeleton it should be an invertebrate (no spine). So you should be good to stab it str8 through the back.
Matt’s, I recently vacationed at Nags Head , outer banks in NC...I can’t tell you how bad I wish I had the gear to fish while we were at the beach! Especially since I knew how to look for and catch those sand crab, thanks to You!!!!
That's what I do. I write down the tides, wind speed and direction, And the time before or after high tide. I also note striper size and what bait or lure I used. I'm also new at bucktail fishing with limited luck last year. I have a lot more luck when chunking mackerel or bunker. Thanks for sharing, bro!
I have been keeping log all year for my striper fishing(mostly delta trolling and bait drifting) and I have been doing best on sandbars at low tide. Over 75% of my fish over 20” and all of my fish over 30” have been 5-12’ of water at low tide on sandbars or in between sandbars and deep water(sandbars at drop offs).im a firm believer in fishing tides on the delta but even with tides you have to consider the moon lol a full moon can turn the day time bite off in the spring due to spawning, but a sandbar at low tide on a full moon at nite... holly shit! Lol best fishing of my life!!!
BilyBOY! : ] that some sound advice. I've watched even in the fresh water, the sonluar tables in some of the fishin mags depict best fishing times per the moon phase and peak feeding times. And they definitely are solid.
I'm a recent subscriber and I've been catching up on your past videos... All have been very enjoyable to watch, but after a week, I have eaten all the groceries in the house! I need to run to the store right now, and I can't wait to get back so I can watch more of your content! ;P
I love your videos, they really make me want to get back out there and start fishing again but health circumstances stop me right now, i guess i have to make do watching these, keep it up!
Dude: You are a very entertaining guy to watch and a good fisherman, no doubt; BUT could you be a little more careful releasing the unwanted fish you have caught, esp. the smelt? Tossing the smelt in the air and having them hit 1 inch water or just wet sand in the wash, will probably kill them, if not now then in a few hours. It is always good to show some respect to the fish you catch even if they are "By-catch". You do a good job on your videos, try to teach people also to respect the sea and the creatures in it. Best regards from NY
Those were some beautiful stripers you nailed there! Softshells are one of those baits that are so effective yet absolutely miserable to keep on the hook (if it even stays on the hook during the initial cast!). I know it's probably overkill but have you ever seen anybody use magic thread to keep a softie on the hook? I guess if you're on a beach crawling with them it doesn't matter... but it might help if you're using them in a place where you can't replenish your stock. Also if you have time this month before the season closes, you should revisit that hole @12:15. The shallow area next to the hole (and stretching down a couple blocks), in front of the rip, is crawling with dungies right now on the incoming and they're there for the pickin' 😉 Tight lines out there!
I've never seen anyone use magic thread with soft shell sand crabs. It probably would work but it would smush it to a ball which might not matter... They stay on the hook just fine for me until they get stolen. One of my friends casts kind of abruptly and that little jolt can knock them right off. Or if your leader is long and it gets Dragged In The Water as you cast that'll pull them right off too from the water tension. Got to have a smooth strong cast, keep them up, and they should stay on just fine. I'll check that spot out for dungy's. Even the whole I was fishing had a few so a snare wouldn't be a bad idea not much current in there either
Ahhh you're right the thread would likely act like a vice on the softies. I'll take your advice and play around with my leader length a bit and I _definitely_ need to work on smoother casting with a lighter setup. I'm so used to bombing snares or even hi/lo's with 6oz for rockfish that I often overdo it when on the beach.
Hey P, you made to one of Matts videos 😀, that is super cool. Still having fun catching dungies by hand during low tide ? Crab snaring have been slow for me so I might try catching them by hand this Friday.
Striper season is starting to heat up all over so you can explore beaches from Santa Cruz, Half Moon Bay, Pacifica, and Ocean Beach in SF and have a solid chance to hooking into a striper. All depends how far you're willing to driving and how long you wanna put in at the beach.
I'm from that area before moving to Texas. Sharp Park, Ocean Beach, all along the coastline. Thanks for giving me a little taste of great surf fishing!
Can you imagine how many times this guy has had to walk to a perfect spot, set up a camera, walk back, then walk across the camera, then come back to pick the camera.... and do it all over again.
About the sturgeon. I believe they transition between fresh and saltwater like stripers and salmon. I remember a new story from back in the 80s of a man catching a sturgeon I believe that was over 300 lb and the estimated age of over a hundred years old in San Francisco Bay. The man was in a small boat and was pulled around the Bay by the sturgeon for several hours before landing it.
I agree, been ocean surf fishing in New Jersey for the last 2 years. I have NOT caught anything on a lure what so ever. only live bait like finger mullet and will try soft shell crabs too
Like your video especially the tips on reading the surf to find the holes and where to cast off and also the hook tips and where to place the hook in the sand crab.
we been using those sand crabs for many many years, we buy those by the pound ,live and they are easy to get if you are willing to get wet for a while with a simple net, there are also sand shrimp and worms in the same place if you know how to chase them with a shovel ... this reminds me of my fishing old times in south america...we catch corvina and halibut with that bait too!
Omg I have missed all you guys give aways and me get to seeing you guys but I. Guess not seeing y’all at all would suck so at least I get to see the videos so thank you for making my days!!!
Love to watch the joy you get from fishing. Looking forward to more of your inflatable boat video's. By the way inflatable boats work great for lobster hooping.
Love your channel, keep up the great work. Here I n Naples, Florida, what you call sand crabs we call sand fleas. We use a small rake with a basket that we drag through the sand to collect the sand fleas.
you can fish for the sand fleas and catch them anytime! grab a little stick, tie some line to it with a tiny hook on the end, stake it in the sand, bait the hook with some shrimp/squid, and just wait till you see the bait get pulled and then just grab the sand flea! I learned this trick in Hawaii and it worked great Great vid!
I use to catch those Sand carbs and strippers, and smelts on the East coast on Long Island when i was a kid in the 60's . Never knew the west coast had the same thing going on.
Im.in florida. Gulf. I catch everything... Soo much variety its still cool to see west coast fish.. I get speckled trout. Bass. Snook. Snapper. Flounder. Reds. Sail cat. Sheeps head. Blavk drum. It goes.on and on mullet. Etc

Striper tastes good when baked. Still fishy tasting but it's good.
Watching and pausing while the 19' Redfish grills. Got the butter/lime/cilantro butter all made up, new potatoes cooling. My first Redfish.
Have respect for the fish man... All of creation deserves it...
The carcass looks like a skate..
Yeah, could have been, with the wings eaten off
It’s probably a sea robin see them all the time in RI like that
Just a little bit of butter.......lol
The Fishing Experience he shoulda rubbed some butter on the sand crab to get a bigger striper 😂
Sorry I missed your event, nice score on the soft shells. throw a hook through those smelts and then go for the striper!
Incredible *Fish* Congratulations Fisherman!😊👍🎣🐟
"That's a keeper!" Doesn't keep it.

“There’s its spine”
ITS A CRUSTACEAN IT DOES NOT HAVE A SPINE
Invertebrate.
On the east coast (FL)we call them sand fleas. Good for catching Whiting, Pompano and Sheepshead.
Very cool - almost felt I was actually out there! Learned a lot too! Surf fishing is my favorite kind of fishing!
Why are you posting at 1:08 am

Joseph Saeteurn are you on the right channel?? Wow🙄
Dammit I would’ve been first but my fingered slipped and I clicked another vid 😡
About the sturgeon. I believe they transition between fresh and saltwater like stripers and salmon. I remember a new story from back in the 80s of a man catching a sturgeon I believe that was over 300 lb and the estimated age of over a hundred years old in San Francisco Bay.
The man was in a small boat and was pulled around the Bay by the sturgeon for several hours before landing it.
found this channel a few days ago, glad i found it
Yes, be careful not to hook that INVERTEBRATE through his SPINE lmao
spacekrill lol I hit the joke , it was funny
@@prshr6145 wtf dude that so fucking meme why would you hit a joke
I like your videos and your personality and the way you tell the truth keep up the good work thank you
Insanely informative for a beginner! Thank you.
Omg I have missed all you guys give aways and me get to seeing you guys but I. Guess not seeing y’all at all would suck so at least I get to see the videos so thank you for making my days!!!

Matts......we need more vids bro. The wait for content is killing us. Keep up the awesome vids!!!!!!
Nice! Striped bass are one of my personal favorites to catch. My record in Baker Beach is 37.5 inches, my current record for the season is 29.
I learned this trick in Hawaii and it worked great
Great vid!
Etc
