    The "do I like it vs have I been influenced to like it" is a huge part of everyday life nowadays, always seems like we have to make these decisions with everything we do.

    I think genuinely if one finds it hard to find personal style, then Yohji's philosophy is good when he said to go and figure it out alone. Not with social media or friends, but literally alone, experiencing textures, smells sounds of a place and learn your feeling on those small things, then apply it to your fashion. I dont know literally how well that works in reality becuase I dont know anyone who would want to be off their phone that long, but its a good idea to try to learn your own opinion about clothes first instead of letting yourself be influenced first. That way it makes it easier to assess what best suits your personal ethos, which in turn evolves a personal style

      Yeah that’s a great piece of advice. I agree it may seem impractical at first to not use technology, but even very quickly before making a purchase to analyze what/how you’ll wear that item can save you from wasting time or money

      @@WhatsTheHype.Landon yeah I agree it doesnt have to be taken literally, one can find their own style in so many ways, but its the contemplation of their own style thats the important tip I think

    Amongst all the other fashion channels like Owen Hyatt, Kyron Warrick, Ken Ijima, etc. this channel is becoming easily one of my favorites for speaking on some of the issues I feel have been more or less plaguing the current fashion landscape. While I, too, find myself falling victim to consuming trendy pieces from time to time, this trend-hopping era we’re in leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
    That being said, not everyone is trying to cultivate a personal style and instead would rather follow trends as a means to belong. Eventually there will come a point where I’m sure they’ll realize it just isn’t feasible to keep copping the “next big thing”. It’s a money pit and a waste.
    Personally, I found my niche years ago with vintage and make it a point to try and thrift 90% of what I wear.

    I think the way you view trends directly correlates to how much you interact with fashion and what platform you use the most. As someone who stepped away from tiktok a while ago, trends don’t truly come and go as much as they do online. I noticed this with the 550’s, maybe it’s where i live but they took over online and i’ve only ever seen them worn twice.This can be applied to anything and everything in real life. I think “be yourself” and “go outside” go together hand in hand.

    • @WhatsTheHype.Landon
      @WhatsTheHype.Landon  2 роки тому +4

      Yeah I agree and this is something I mentioned in my trends aren’t real video. What’s considered dead online, didn’t have the time/audience to become a trend in person

    Vanilla ice said something along the lines of “the 90’s were the best decade because they were the last decade without the hard influence of technology. Since the iPhone came out in 2004 there hasn’t been anything to define the last almost two decades. Not in music, not in clothes” gotta agree with him.

      That’s actually super interesting to think about. With 70s, 80s, and 90s styles becoming more popular this year I was thinking about what the last set of years will be remembered by style wise. I think the main thing will be the focus on consuming more (fashion hauls)

    honestly for lots of people its hard to have their own style, but imo its about how often you consume fashion content and how much of the opinions in that content you take in. The only fashion content I watch now are videos critiquing certain things and talking about them in introspective ways. Personally I’ve found a lot of what I like now through trends. Some things stick because I ask “why” a lot more I like boxy tees because of proportions. I like straight fit pants because they are very comfortable and can go with a variety of things smart - casual. Now that I have a “uniform” I can buy things with interesting textures or colors that seamlessly let me express myself yet still fit in with majority of my wardrobe.

    I get referred to as a “Grampa Hypebeast” too often, do any of you have any tips to end the constant bullying? (FYI I’m a 59 year old dude but I kinda pretend I’m 23, I’ve worked at my local movie theater for 40 years and I only wear supreme shirts, Dior shoes, and I start every sentence with either “brahhh” or “fackkkk”, etc.) Where should I start? Any tips? Even beginner tips would help. I just cannot even look at a Nike or an Adidas shirt without getting a cold shiver. I need my fashion, but I’m starting to become afraid my fashion doesn’t need me….

    • @MobileBoys
      @MobileBoys 2 роки тому +2

      Maybe instead of starting all your sentences with brahhh or fackkkk maybe mix it up with “shattt bro” or “keepin it one hunna” or even a “how’s it hoopin”. You ain’t never gonna go wrong starting your sentences with those and that’s coming from a real inner city homie bro. Personally, I start all my sentences with a deep exhale, forming a giant cloud from my electronic cigarette, or as the kids call it, my “vape”. I understand the feeling of being a Grampa Hypebeast, I’m pushing 70 myself. Well anyway, have a good day old pal, maybe we’ll see each other in heaven and with my lungs that may not be too far away

    Honestly I believe it is still possible to have personal style. It might sound pretentious but I do have my own style and don’t really partake in trends because I find them incredibly boring. Especially gorp core, all the parachute pants/insanely wide jeans and stuff like that, the trends bore me to death atm. Yeah I think trends put fashion creators on social media in an interesting position. If they want to keep up with “what’s hot” it probably makes sense to buy the hyped brands/fits, but to build an audience that lasts forever I would assume creating a personal style people can resonate with would work best

  • @-ryn-
    @-ryn- 2 роки тому +8

    I think it’s possible. It’s very difficult if you have a large presence on social media/influencer or simply just use social media heavily and are fed these constant trends. For the average person that’s into fashion, and not that into keeping up with the trends, it’s much easier bc they’re most likely not concerned with it and simply enjoy pieces that are functional and go along with their lifestyle.

    One thing that I find obnoxious/lame is people telling you what you should wear. One example: Not long ago I saw a video from One Dapper Street showcasing his usual weekly fits. He's known for wearing slim/tapered bottoms and in the comments pretty much everyone was roasting him cuz he's not wearing baggy pants, he is not stylish, he doesn't know fashion etc. It seems like if you're not wearing oversized tees/hoodies, baggy pants/jeans and some sort of air Jordan's/dunks or NB you're not stylish at all, you're outdated etc and that comes for the same people that would preach about fitted/slim clothes few years ago. In my honest opinion I do like parts of both styles but it's like same people that shame you for wearing fitted clothes basically look like NPC's now. Personal style should be a collection of the stuff you like whether it's slim or baggy.
    No hate on anyone.
    Anyways, great video man, you made some good points!

    Jordan 1s are dead?! ☠️
    Better for us sneaker heads that do love j1s as we’d buy a pair for 400 bucks but if it’s “dead” we’ll be able to snatch it for 300 or less. That actually makes our appetite and collection bigger.
    PS thank us later for overselling when hyped again 😂

    I think my personal style has changed when the pandemic started. I'm not comfortable wearing skinny jeans and fitted shirts anymore since I'm staying at home most of time. So now I'm into boxy shirts and loose pants and I love the silhouette and proportion of it. I also realized that trends come and go but more often than not, many fashion pieces and trends end up repeating themselves. So yeah just wear whatever we like.

    • @WhatsTheHype.Landon
      @WhatsTheHype.Landon  2 роки тому +1

      I honestly hadn’t thought about how the pandemic changed my style, but it’s actually very similar to yours. Comfort is key now and I like the silhouette it gives. Thanks for the comment!

    The minority percentage of outliers keep things interesting. They are the ones who dont give a fuck about negative opinions and they just lean harder into the controversial fits and pieces they wear. And this is always true because the hip to be square masses seek peer approval moreso than a style that truly personally reflects themselves.

    What’s with the label of “fast fashion” over Kevin O? Dudes a pimp, suit is worth more than what’s on your wardrobe. Idk why this page shows up on my feed but dude let people have fun with what they wear. Stills come and go and that’s how we snag up things for cheap at a fraction of the price
