--Art of Drumming HQ EP 2 created by Wei lung Wong--
#polyrhythmic #doublebass #kascade
It's been a year and slightly over a month since the release of this video and I just want to thank all of you for your support. This was the video that really got my channel going and it might not seem like much hitting over 20k views compared to other drumming channels that easily surpass this number. But for a niche such as progressive metal music I think that's really awesome and I owe it all to you. Once again THANK YOU!
Wei Lung Wong love these videos please keep them coming this has been the only way to really see what Matt is doing and you're doing his drum parts justice. Thanks bro :D
Thanks Ryan, you'll be pleased to know I have another Matt Garstka lesson lined up before the month is up :)
Wei Lung Wong you're fantastic!!d I love your drumming, keep up the practice ...thanks for inspiring!!!
I won a scxholarship performing this song, took me like two months of serious practice. Excellent work man
CONGRATULATIONS! This song took me a year of serious practice back then. Where are you studying at?
I like that you give an accurate depiction of what it took for you to be able to get to play this as well as you did. I've seen too many people just looking at the product of someone's commitment, but hardly give attention to the journey it took to get that product.
Totally! glad we share the same view Mani
Damn dude, keep doing this. Really, really good :)
Thanks Jonas!
make a drum cover
I really appreciate that you told us how long it took to do this. It helps put the insanity of what Matt Gartska does in perspective. I can memorize what your playing by ear and never understand what I’m doing... never actually learn it. You having done all the work... I almost feel like I’m cheating.
It totally does. Matt practices easily 10x more than me, the dedication is next level haha. Thank you for your kind words though!
I'm a guitarist but I still find this incredibly interesting and helpful when trying to understand the complex grooves matt garstka comes up with VERY HELPFUL VERY GOOD PLAYING well done sir
Thank you Thomas, appreciate your kind words :)
yes yes yes yes yes yes plllleeeeeeeeeaaaaaase more.very well put together.
MORE INCOMING!! Thanks Pete!
your consistency and amount of effort is humbling and inspiring.
Thank you for that, I hope that inspiration you've got propels you forward!
That note at the end was wonderful! New drummers must realize this ... It takes effort ^^
Your videos are amazing! I'm not a drummer but I still learn a lot from watching your content. Thank you!
Thanks for including how long you have practiced to get to the result. I have not tried this pattern yet, but it seemed easy when you played it at the end. Showing the numbers changed my expectations a bit, luckily.
It might be easier for you, I was never good at double bass prior to this so it took me a long while. Try it and let me know how it goes :)
5760 minutes?! Man, it's unbelievable! How much work and didn't give up on learning this pattern! Respect! Keep it up!
Well done and thanks for this lesson !
Great lesson, really like how you added that it took you a year to master so that people have realistic expectations and don't get discouraged.
Thank you very much, thanks for being so humble, you play very well, all the best for you, thanks for sharing about how much time you spent in this exercise... Very helpful =)))
my pleasure Andre, thanks for watching and comenting, all the best to your drumming!
Wow... great!!
I really appreciated that you put the amount of time you've spent working on this because you made it look effortless! Really well explained too!
But we all know, being effortless takes effort hahaha, thanks Graham!
Awesome! great lesson thanks Man! Keep going!
It's motivating when you talk about the journey (aka everyday practice) to accomplish this kind of ridiculously advanced pattern. Awesome work, very informative (either for me, a guitar player). Keep posting!
Hey thanks for watching my videos Fabio, hope it pushes you to better your guitar playing too, Tosin and Javier's stuff are so ridiculously challenging too !
Trinity of Animals, they move all us from our musical cages :)
Wow finally…beeeen looking for a break down video
Cheers!
Great breakdown! Keep it up!
took me around the same amount of practice. I think a little more for me! you were grooving it so hard!!! it was outstanding!
High ^5 and thank you Philly Cheesesteak!
awesome lesson!
man ur chanel is sooo nice.. im a guitarist who didnt took any lessons in his life yet haha but great to see stuff explained after u found it for ur self long time ago and then realize what u can really do with it :D and i finally can speak a little gibberish with my bandmates without having to find my own words so they understand me aswell xD
Aw thanks Yanick, where you from? welcome!
I've been trying to get the intro kick pattern for bleed by Meshuggah up to speed for about 2 years now, what you said at the end about it taking you about a year to play kascade, that made me feel a little bit better about myself, thanks for helping me pick myself up!
Yeah keep going! You're making progress every time you know!
Wei Lung Wong I think sometimes I have really off days and other days are really good, I practiced the kick pattern yesterday and I felt pretty good about it! Thanks again for the encouraging words, it means a lot!
Awesome video man. This particular part Matt wrote is one of my favorite he's done in the band. Also small note, perhaps turn the background music down a little bit when you are speaking at the beginning? It's a little loud imo.
Hey thanks for your input, I'll look into it
Goodjob dude! i've been waiting for this for a long time
hope the wait was worth it :)
Man your awesome as a drummer and i dont know you but i already think you re equally awesome as a person, that coment on the hours you put in,now i find you even more inspiring than matt himself
+martin bursztein Woah that's a really big compliment, thank you Martin :) hope this helps bring your Drumming to a new level!
1 year, that's some dedication my man, much love for that!
Thx for this!
yeap we definitely we want more of Matt Garstka's insane drumming..! that video was really helpful, especially the fact that you have analyzed the groove and the fill and you also included the sheets. I wanted to practice this pattern a long time now, but I was never motivated enough to put the work into analyze what exactly he's playing, because, I mean it's "Matt Garstka's insane drumming"... so, thank you and keep doing these videos! :)
The hardest thing is to get started, hope this motivates you to go do it! And thank you for your kind words
Great. I play this song too and I used to play all the double bass notes instead of groups of fourths. This is a nice pattern by the way. Thanks for you contribution to the musical world!
That's what I thought too when I first heard the song 2 years ago, but when I transcribed it, I realised my mistake. And you're very welcome, glad you found this useful :)
You're welcome Alex! Matt's the genius
It took that much practice, and I'm sure this is the kinda thing that Matt can just pull out of his ass whenever he wants while playing. Guy's a freakin genius.
Well I'm sure he has to put in the crazy amount of work first, before he can pull it out of his ass, like he says in his recent Cribs video, "I like to work hard..." He is a genius though :)
Really good video man, really chill and informative. Thanks ! Big thumbs up
you're welcome and thank you for your kind encouragement!
Wei Lung Wong no problem man keep them coming !
This is great! I love Matt's work and I'm educating myself on music to better understand why. I hope you cover more of his work.
Cool J L. Matt's work did widen my horizons into the possibilities of rhythms and composition. I will cover more of his insane work :)
Great video Wei! Keep it up
It really help my drumming. Thanks a lot!
For some reason I loved the fact that you looked like you wanted to keep jamming after the demos haha. Super inspiring for you to post how long it took you to learn this. It's easy to assume drummers hear a song then immediately record a video for it. Awesome work man!!
HAHA I did went on to jam the entire song after recording this. It's such a high energy song. And I want people to know that it's not like that at all, at least for me and that everyone can do it too. Thanks Greg, Ninjas rock!
Wow great effort, could only imagine how hard it was to learn this
Really hard, but with great struggle comes great reward :)
Thank you so much, Matts my favorite too, these videos are super helpful.
Great!
Seeing as you ask to leave requests, I request the entire album of the joy of motion, lol (or atleast the rest of kascade, and paramexer)
Also, dont mean to keep pestering you, but maybe have a slower transition on the uphill climb of bpm. It goes from 60, to 100, to 160. Maybe 60, to 85, to 105, to 130, to 160. When your limited on resources, this can be very helpful! Thank you so much!!!! Cheers!
Oh as for more BPMs, I'll find a way to incorporate more of them into my future videos. But my concern is that it'll make the video really long. Tell me more about your resource limitation and I might be able to make a companion video with those extra bpms, would that help? Although I pre-record things 1 or 2 weeks earlier, so the next 2 lessons will not have the extra bpms yet.
And yup, I will cover a lot more Joy of Motion, but there's HEAPS of material. So you'll have to be patient ;)
That was cristal clear, thanks for the explanation!
Sick!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Awesome brotha 💫🙏🏼
Thanks man!!
This is a great video! Really great description and easy to follow tablature!
For future videos, you could consider turning the background music down when you are speaking, it's a bit loud. :)
Thanks for your input Scipio, I'll look into better quality voiceovers
Amazing! Thank you so much for this video!
thanks again. love it!
Thanks man, you're really good!
Wow! Great video....awesome job
Thank you as always Adam!
you're welcome!
Excellent !
Really good man. Biggest respect dude!
Completely insane man, you're dedication is amazing man! I wanted too know what's the stack you are using in this video?
I'm using a TRX ICON Stacker(top) + CRX China(bottom) but I hear TRX discontinued their ICON series. Anyway thanks for your kind comments :)
Hey man. Great video, and adding in your personal practice stats at the end gave some great insight and inspiration!! Keep it up!!
Glad it felt that way, I wanted to drive home the point that it takes a long time to be able to play stuff even for me, and hopefully people won't give up and keep pushing themselves on the things they want to achieve :)
You are a really talented musician, and I appreciate that you made lessons on AAL songs. I was waiting for that for a long time! Could you please make full song tutorial, like "Para mexer"?
I would love to see you break down "Eternal Rains Will Come" by Opeth! That song is killer and very complex! I really love what you do, you helped me understand and read drum sheet!
Great video! I am currently working on this song, and this is very helpful. You are correct that the end of the phrase is in sextuplets...I saw a transcription of it in quintuplets, which is actually very interesting, but not what's in the original. The quintuplet R-L-R-RK-LK is very cool sounding though. Thanks again!
Amazing work. Keep on going Dude
I can get it down quite simply if I just let my feet independently play a single stroke roll (16ths), and play the 5/4 over that. Getting my feet to not play every 5th 16th note is downright imposssible for me haha, epic commitment man!
I think you can get this pattern down too you know. You can commit if you want to :)
nice work dude!
Thank you!
subbed. you're an inspiration, man :)
Thanks Elijah! That made my night
Yes sir :)
keep doing, man!! its great!!
I'm not a drummer myself but I have always wanted to ask this. When you do polirythms and playing a cymbal in 4/4 do you just let that hand do its job because it just works and concentrate on feet and snare or remember every note on which you have to play the cymbal an play it?
The best is to be totally aware of every note on which you have to play the cymbal with, then there are no holes in your understanding and playing. And you will be better be able to execute it more accurately and cleanly rather than just relying on feel or luck. So going slow with all these stuff is the best way to do that first. Very good question Baiatu Bun!
when you're practicing or playing known songs, it's more of remembering when to play the cymbal, but when you're soloing with on top of your head, it's much more of relying on the feel, at least for me personally
Wow bro!! This is awesome!! I'm from Sg too :))
Whoa Yo Andrew! thanks :)
You deserve way more subs dude.
Buster Odeholm of Vildhjarta!
Keep them coming, anything AAL would be really helpful!
Good video
thanks man .
I think it's better to practice everyday, at least 2-3 hours , even if it's on a practice pad set. It took me only 5 days playing 4 hours to get this song, because I consider consistency a key to success. Cheers.
To each his own. it took me longer because my double bass really sucks to begin with anyway but I agree with you consistency is a key to success!
Thanks for this perfect explanation! challenge = accepted. I'm gonna learn this but using a single pedal to see if i can consistently hit these speeds with one foot (heel-toe). Will upload a vid when done :)
Done!
That was really cool. Excellent work!
I love you!
Nice job Wei ;).
Thanks Dean :)
u r awesome bro .... very good work !
heeey thanks bro good job
great!!
Another great transcription, Wei!! THX a million! What kind of software do you use for the transcriptions?
+CyberIllusions I use Finale Songwriter, thanks Cyberillusions!
Matt's a huge fan of placing a crash on quarter notes... has been really hard to get down with everything else going on lol
You'll get there in a bit :D I too found a lot of this stuff awkward as hell and I gotta admit it took me years to be able to do well a lot of this stuff I''ve shared on my channel.
Great lesson! I wonder how the fuck Matt come up with this sick pattern. Blows me away.
You produce some great drum content man. It's really appreciated by us all. What do you use to map out the drum parts on staff?
Yo Thanks Robbie! I use Finale Songwriter for all the transcriptions
that was fucking great!
Hey Wei. This video was amazing and helped me learn this groove. I was wondering what kind of double pedal that is. It looks super smooth!
Those are the Crush M1 double pedals. But I use a different pedal when I gig and when I'm at home, which are the pearl demon drives. These pedals are just the ones I have in my school's studio where i film the videos. Thank you for your kind words :)
im such a perfectionist that if i cant just hear it out then i'll just kick myself in the nuts if i cant play it right away lol
Haha but that means you're gonna grind this one out till you can play it because you're a perfectionist
Please do a lesson on The Future That Awaited Me
Oh I love that song, definitely will, look out for it!
Please more AAL drum lessons, I can't find partitures for Para Mexer I hope you got it, amazing job dude
Oh I haven't actually thought of doing Para Mexer, but are there any particular parts from that song you'd like me to cover? However more AAL stuff definitely coming right up
All the song is an amazing piece of polyrhythmic art, grooves, and ghost notes, so I hope that soon
Alright, I'll start with the first 2 grooves then, stay tuned
Awesome video! What program are you using for the notation? Cheers! :)
Hey Nicklas I'm using Finale Songwriter, Cheers!
I'm getting issues with audio playback, not sure if it's just me. Cut's out6 when explaining the quintuplet grouping, and then again later.
Oh yes, UA-cam recently flagged this video for copyright, so there are parts where the audio cuts out because of the flagged sections where I used AAL's song in the background.
Great video! Have you ever considered doing anything by Tool?
Looking forward to more in the future :)
Hey actually no, what would you like me to look at?
Rosetta Stoned has a lot of really fun and complex stuff in it that not a lot of people seem to have covered
What Software you use for transcriptions and playing with video ?
Finale Songwriter for transcriptions, and Corel VideoStudio Pro X9 for all video editing
Your skills are amazing man !
I have some problem in understanding the "woven web" double bass part by AAL can you explain it through a video by breaking down the pattern ?
SURE, but that'll have to wait a little. And thanks for your kind words :)
So if it's a 5 against 4 polyrythem does that mean that it's a 5/4 pattern played under a 4/4 pattern?? if so then wouldn't the songs time signature be 5/4 and 4/4. Also it was a great video, just maybe you wanna turn up your mic volume or turn down the background music because it's kind of hard to hear you talk.
You can feel the song in 5/4, but then there wouldn't be enough beats left for 4/4, so more accurately it can be 2 bars of 5/4 followed by 1 bar of 6/4. I prefer to just feel it all in 4/4 and that's the purpose of the quarter note stack, to hint to you that the band is thinking in 4/4 and therefore explains why everything lines up that way, thanks for your input though :)
man your videos are great but why dont you keep that sixteenth note on kick under snare drum? Keeping all sixteen notes on your feet under the 5/4 rythm on hands is way easier (sorry for my grammar, Im not american nor british :D )
This tutorial serves to educate people on the actual pattern Matt plays but yeah you can play every 16th notes for an easier time. Also there's a slight change in the tone because you now have snare and kick together every 5 notes though most people won't notice it, and I am neither American nor British too haha :D
I looked at that video with Matt again after I wrote this and found out taht you're right but I was too lazy to delete this comment :D And yeah, there is more space ofr snare sound when you play liek this but for me it is just too difficult :) :) Thanks for you vids, keep it up!
It was really difficult for me too upon learning this but everything great starts out difficult, cheers and keep up the drumming!
dude cafo pliss
Is it ok to just play the kick together with the snare? Its so much easier but feels like cheating
Ya sure it's okay, it's a slightly different sound and you definitely can still have fun with the song like that. Btw Dark Souls!!!
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ hell yeah bro. Cheers from msia!
Isn't he just playing straight 16th notes for the double bass? Pretty sure he plays them with the snare hits
Nah, I just went back and watched the live Kascade video and it's not straight 16th notes on the bass drum.
Cynical Circus's got it. Go watch the live and slow it down to 50% and you'll clearly see it is not straight 16ths.
Ahh I see
It's polymetric, not polyrithmic, but polyrithm and polymeter coulde be seen as correlated
It was honestly discouraging when you said how long it took you to learn this. I'm scared.
Hahaha, I'm sorry it appeared that way for you. But make time your friend and not your enemy.
Wei Lung Wong That was deep man. Thanks for the advice.
Got it in half an hour. Though I have to admit that I wouldn't have learned it that fast without your help.
NICE, you must have pretty solid feet to begin with :)
Vomit inducing humble brag
Hahaha
This is awesome bro!!
