102. Dirt Cheap 56' Project YACHT: Is She Worth It? [Full Tour] Learning the Lines

  • In it's heyday this boat was beautiful. Unfortunately, she's not in such great shape today. This boat needs a complete refit, and totally refitting a 56 foot yacht is a HUGE undertaking that will cost an unimaginable amount of time and money. It's not something to be taken lightly.
    The biggest question is... is she worth it?

    Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way.

    As a 61 year old Boomer I wish to say thank you. I so enjoy your videos showing all the lovely boats. Young man you are very lucky to have such a brilliant lovely wife that shares your passion for the sound of the wind in the sails and the slap of water on the hull.

    Cool!
    A $20,000 boat for only $100,000!
    Thanks for showing us.
    I even enjoy the junkyard boats.
    I just try to find the humor in the crazy prices people put on their emotional ties to their stuff instead of realistic money for something needing a full refit.

      Yes, What part of Dirt Cheap is it that I don't understand? I guess I am just dumb. I tried to subtract 1980 from 2020 to get the age of the boat, and I couldn't, I ran out of fingers and toes.

    Thanks, I really enjoy the walk throughs. Tough to imagine the buyer for this boat... best deal may be its current use. I doubt you'd know what the cost of restoration would be unitl it was torn apart, by then it would be too late. Big risk. Back of a napkin estimates would not work fo me on this one!

    Not much new to add that hasn't already been said. Thanks for the tour! Maybe as a new added twist while you are waiting to get back to Freebie, see if you can do some tours with owners who are currently in the middle of their own re-fit. Surely there are plenty of them out there who'd like to walk us through their ongoing project, discuss decisions they made and why, and show us what is next on the agenda. That would be interesting! hoooahhh

    It's interesting to see these commentaries on the different boats. I'm in the industry and I see lots of projects like these. I think if you we're to consider the cost of a boat like this new and take into account build quality and materials, you'd be looking at $800k to $1m. For someone with the time and the skills, an $80k to $90k purchase price and $150k in repairs and improvements and you'd have a go anywhere boat that would be big enough for for a family to travel comfortably. I've yet to see any boat, new or used, that doesn't require significant maintenance and improvement cost. 10 year old boats have outdated electronics and any boat that gets used with any frequency has a diesels in need of replacement. I didn't see quite the cautionary tale you did with this one but I agree anyone undertaking this type of project needs to understand costs.

    • @kevinfisher1345
      @kevinfisher1345 4 роки тому

      While I agree that one could still save money vs buying new boat of that size. There is still two big issues. First it will never be new, so is not really a fair comparison. Second, they have already shown several other boats around this size that were sail away or near sail away ready, requiring very lil maintenance, all at 75k - 100k.
      That all means even if you did all of that, one would never get that back, likely would only be able to resell it at cost they purchased it for to begin with (80-90K). Which means they would have spent all that time, money to upgrade and did I mention time, that wasn't needed to get a good boat that size to begin with. Now, there is always a matter of preference, and yes IF you love the boat and intend to make it yours for many years, it is still all worth it. This is likely where the cautionary tale comes from, they have seen many better and for cheaper. I suspect they heard about the lightning damage and so thought that was going to be its biggest and mostly only problem ... only to see it has seen better days and needs ton more work then just that.
      Having said all of that, the interior wasn't in too bad of shape, bit outdated, but pretty decent. Really the only major work might be the forward compartments, but even that should not be that difficult. Just the starting price point seems bit steep considering how much more cost one would have to do.

The general aesthetics of the hull design is even more captivating than the cabin.

Given the Nauticals have a reputation for a solid build with two years and a hundred K or so (maybe more) you could have a very nice ocean cruiser.

I feel everybody has the chance on judging on their own. Do I like the concept, what might be poor, what is simply nice.
    The other point is not necessarily what the boat is, but what it may become. Buying used boats, that is truly what it is all about. I do like your vids, I have learned much of it so far. And if you'd be earning money by that, well take it, there's no problem with me at all. That price will have to come down a lot. There's much refitting and the re wiring for the electronics and re placing all the electronics and the re placing the generator. Far as the engine, my opinion it wont take much to get it running. But all in all the price has to come down. And if not then it'll stay a b&b. The bow will be fixed from the other boats insurance so it should be better than it was. I like the boat but im on a retirements income and my bockets aren't that deep lol. Yall are doing great job showing these boats. You know you need to go into restate boats. And plus the location where your at. Y'all would make enough money for y'alls repairs and plus survival back on the water. Maybe in a week or two im going down to Marathon. Im going to take a look at a sailboat down there. • @bobhamilton298
    @bobhamilton298 4 роки тому +1

    Nice boat actually, but as others have said, lots of money. But if you are handy, most of the cost is in personal time. I would start with rewiring, with protection from the next lightning strike in mind. This by itself does not cost a lot of money. A few grand in wire, etc. But time, woo hoo! I would go ahead and install AC/Heat next. A boat this heavy could do the high latitudes, so might as well get combined units. Lots of money, but again, do it yourself and the price comes down considerably. The motor is probably mechanically fine, but wiring again probably needs looked at. Canvas costs are going to add up as everything needs replaced. The rigging looked Ok, but it will need to be inspected. Boat damage again is mainly time and some hardware costs. I would save electronics for last. Why replace before it is needed. Hopefully cost will go down and capabilities (like wireless instruments) will improve over time. No doubt its going to get close to $100K before its ready for a circumnavigation. And here lies the real problem. Its a mono-hull in a world where the demand has diminished to almost nothing. There are lots of large mono-hulls rotting in boat yards and marinas. People are giving them away just to get rid of them. So even if the boat were free, is a 1980 mono-hull worth $100K. Perhaps if refurbished, but the buyers are going to be far and in-between.

    If you guys are cruising in open sea --- you will be thrice-thankful for the covered bridge and conning area. A boat like a CAL 40 like I've driven may be a prettier boat but can be miserable by the third hour in the Catalina Channel in semi-bad weather in your windbreaker whilst drinking cold coffee. Fifty-foot-plus OAL boats are far too complicated for a review by you or me -- you got to have someone qualified to do a large boat survey. You guys might consider getting papers if you are thinking of driving something like this under any circumstances.

Two different layouts, an owners version and charter. This was a charter version modified to be more like the owners version with the engine room.

      It's movable, just not under its own power. I'd buy something like this someday as a house boat but I'd be looking to pay more like $40,000. That said, the motor likely just needs an ECU, with only 300 hours on it, it wouldn't need a rebuild. Many of the electronics may be able to be repaired. The generator likely can be repaired. Stuff that could be investigated before you buy. I really like the size and floor plan as a house boat. I wouldn't want to cruise a boat that big.

    For almost 100K this boat is definitely not worth it. However, if the price were in the low to mid 20's and you purchased used or remaned electronics, it could be worth the time. As far as the boat itself, it's beautiful and could be made worth the money they are asking with the necessary repairs. (Yes I saw the bimini flaking off in your hand.) If you're a hands on restorer, like you guys, you could save a significant amount of money in sweat equity. But the cost could be astronomical if it's done professionally. My personal review of this boat is that its restoration will need time and deep pockets, but I really liked the layout of this boat.

Also, you moved a little too fast over the deck for me to scope in all of the rigging and such. More detail on wenches too, please. That boat had a fortune in wenches for sure. It was great this time how you pointed out the furling mainsail, I love a boom furler myself, but the behind the mast will do but can mess with battens. • @wombatdk
      @wombatdk 4 роки тому

      As far as I know, no real protection. There's a few systems that claim to protect against lightning strikes, but the reality is that the strength of the magnetic fields alone will fry some sensitive equipment.
      If there is lightning around, the best thing you can do is disconnect everything. I've heard people say that they put sensitive electronics into a farraday cage and disconnect all the mast wiring, which does make sense to me.
      Btw, I lived in a house that got struck by lightning twice. First strike (into the chimney), fried every bit of electronics and electrics in the house. Literally a full rewire of all the cables, light switches, kitchen, laundry, TV and so on. After that we put lightning rods in. Second lightning strike, some 20 years or so later, hit the lightning rods, blew off the corner of the house (literally, the bricks exploded), but no damage to anything inside - EXCEPT a tablet that was sitting somewhat close, inside, to the outside wire of the lightning rod.

      @wombatdk 4 роки тому

      @@CajunWolffe I've heard that a few times, with all kinds of other suggestions too - and controversial reports on the efficacy. Based on my own experiences I think it very much depends on whether the strike can enter the electric system. Considering mast lights are wired in, I think that risk is still there. Disconnecting the mast wiring therefore does seem like a very good idea. The other concern is the sheer heat produced by a lightning strike. Those lightning strikes are super destructive.

With all the electronics "fried" along with the auxillary not running & who knows what a thorough survey will uncover. Once you go above 40 feet everything costs double or tripple. So even if you paid 1.00 for this beast,a proper refit to bring it to ocean crossing cruising condition would be over 200,000.00 then you would need about 75,000 a year to maintain it.not including marina fee or insurance. A 40 footer refit to same standard would be about 100,000.00 and cost about 20,000 a year to maintain. Obviously buying a boat that someone else has refit in the past few years is the only boat thats going to be possibly a good deal. For instance i have a 42 year old 37 foot tayana. I have spent 250,000 usd in the past 15 years. She is in perfect condition. If i had to sell i would be lucky to get 75,000.00 probobly less so my boat at 75,000 needs no refits for at least a decade. Now thats a good deal. But i just spent 75,000 last year alone. This is my forever boat so its just how it goes. But smart ,buy the boat with a recent refit done right. So that means boat is in as near new condition after refit. Just my 2 cents
