Slightly off topic but still Metallica related. I wasn't at their gig at Slane castle a few years ago. People who were there said they had a great time. But I watched it on UA-cam a few months after and I thought they "phoned it in". I would have liked to hear thrashers like Damage Inc and My Apocalypse. Something more edgy.

I remember a scene from the movie "A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica", were Bob Rock was arguing with Kirk about the solo from The Unforgiven. Bob was pushing Kirk to write a better solo, Lars was defending Kirk saying that "it wasn't his style", but Bob had a point, they couldn't just slap any random notes just for the sake of having a solo in the song. You can hear Kirk trying different solos in the style of what he has done in the last two albums, but Bob wasn't pleased (thank God). Bob even challenged Kirk to play something and teased him saying "let's hear the guitar player of the year's solo". In the end we got a well written, memorable, not flashy but very well executed solo. I guessKirk needs to be pushed and challenged in order to compose something worth listening, but that won't happen since Metallica is surrounded by Yes-men.
And no, I'm not just hating on him, I'm just disappointed that we are missing out on every good solo he could have written in the past 20 years if he wasn't so lazy, like Lars.

I think Cliff pushed them the most while he was in that band which explains why they were so good back then as compared to now. They need a leader and have been lost without one ever since. They'd be better off with Bob Rock back in there producing again, "pushing" them to not be so lazy while writing.

    Hot take:
If you look at net worths, royalty splits, and writing credits, you'll realize that Kirk doesn't get writing credits on songs where his main contribution is only a solo.
He doesn't get paid much if he doesn't contribute riffs. The band doesn't collectively see solos as enough to give Kirk a writing credit historically.
So after this financial gaslighting for decades why do you think Kirk is getting so jaded and doesn't shred as much anymore? Because it doesn't give him any benefits in doing so.
This is the pattern I have noticed. This is also why I equally split writing credits with bandmates. Even if their contributions aren't as large percent wise for the song, without them the song would definitely be different and that deserves credit. A band is a collective. Decades of James and Lars being the primary writers has netted a massive inequality in compensation and probably more importantly to Kirk, credit for contributions. I write sometimes a lot in a given song but I don't want to discredit the skills of my bandmates so even if I have written 75% of a song I still split everything evenly. That is how Lars and James should have been doing it.

There's a place for improvisation in studio recordings. I guarantee you even the 80s solos had some degree of it. Many genres such as jazz and blues also rely heavily on improvisation. The problem is that Kirk sucks at it now and relies way too much on the same licks he's been using for ages.

I do think he has a point to some degree. I play myself and if a song with a cool solo comes on I'm saying "wow, that's amazing, check out that lick, that note choice is so wild, that tone is great, this part is so original, what a bold choice, god that's hard" or whatever to my non-musician friends who will say something like "just sounds like a guitar". They (not all of them but most) can't really tell the difference between the intro to Smells like Teen Spirit, the solo in Stairway or the intro to Stranglehold. Obviously they can tell them apart but I mean to them it's just guitar noises in much the same way you could play me 10 drum solos and yeah, I could hear a difference but they all just sound like a drum solo.

When compared to other metal guitarists at his time, Kirk is nowhere near as technical or skilled as say Randy Rhoads, Marty Friedman, or Dimebag Darrell, but the point was that he never had to be like them. Just ripping the pentatonic scale with a wah pedal got the job done, and then that just became the sound for Metallica. Nowadays, Kirks got the money and the legacy for the good solos he wrote on previous albums so now he just goes for it and doesn’t plan out solos. But when he did sit down and plan it out, it sounds like Cliff definitely pushed him on Orion, and even after that, Dont Tread on Me has parts which I could never imagine Kirk coming up with today on the fly. So yeah, I wish we had the old Kirk back because he wrote some really classic solos. That being said, I do think though we would all prefer the random pentatonic nonsense he does instead of an alternate universe where every Metallica solo sounds all Yngvie and neoclassical.

There is a Russian character named Fredguitarist. He calls himself UA-cam's first guitar blogger. According to him, 90% of metal and rock guitarists do not know how to play (in the sense of playing dirty, bad palm mutes, weak fifths, bends screaming like a mouse squeal and other “bread” sound production from touching extra strings with your hands and improper grip of the pick). Kirk Hammett, Dave Mustaine, Kerry King, Slash, Jimmy Page, Tony Iommi, Ritchie Blackmore and even James Hetfield are “newbies with no talent.” Allegedly, only Jeff Waters, Lee Malia, the guitarists of Testament and the Finnish band Lost Society, not counting Guthrie Govan and the like, play correctly with the “nail saw.”

Ayyy, I just learnt Wasted Years. First song I learnt in 15 years after picking my guitar up again. Once I knew the notes of the solo, I didn't have to go back and look at them again (my memory sucks) because it's so memorable. I can't play it well yet but I know the notes, and when I forget a part I can just hum it because the song is in my head. Especially the solo. And I know for a fact many Iron Maiden fans who don't play guitar have such solos stuck in their head just like me.
Randy Rhoads is another one. Kirk should listen to SATO and say again that no one remembers the guitar solo. Certainly not his, that's for sure.
Or Zeppelin. I think anyone who heard Since I've Been Loving You can hum the opening solo. I haven't listened to it in 10 years and juat yesterday while improving I ripped off a couple of phrases because it's so memorable. I'm sure it wasn't note for note but the gist of it and main melody sticks in your head. And I didn't always play guitar. Having guitar solos stuck in my head is kind of why I started. That and the feeling. A certain sense of power that goes with hitting a chord with a certain amount of gain with a decent amo and hearing stuff on the shelves rattling around and even fall over if the you hit the natural resonance of the bookshelf or whatever.

Oh and, I think Murray makes great memorable solos too but yes he has been doing the same (very good) thing for a while. I always gravitated more towards Smith. He's like Glenn Tipton in Priest. Though Downing usually learnt the techniques too, the memorable, melodic solos were usually Glenn's, while Downing attempted to make his amp explode with the whammy bar. The actually cool version of what Hammet was trying to do. I like Downing a lot but Tipton is the musically more interesting one. Rant over

  • @IRanOutOfPhrases
    @IRanOutOfPhrases 3 місяці тому +2

I think a lot of this is people just misinterpreting what the other is saying (in both directions.)
Like, I think if you were to ask Kirk, "So you don't think solos are important and no longer needed?" I think he'd disagree with that. Right??
I'm guessing if anything, he's still a bit upset that a UA-camr "improved" his solo and he objected to what constitutes and improvement. And I think he's fair to disagree on what makes it better or worse. But now he's just lost on what he's trying to say. If you're even suggesting that "solos should serve the song", then you STILL understand minimally that they still have a place in music today. Like, that's Ghost to an upside-down T. But they still have kickass, memorable solos (that might only last 10 seconds, but that just makes them easier to remember, lol)
I just don't think he even realizes what he's saying when he says, "They're just gonna forget it later anyway." Because he's also saying that he makes sure to play iconic solos the exact same. If he actually believed in what he's saying....he wouldn't be doing them like that over and over.
Kirk doesn't believe most of what he's saying. I don't think there's any reason to address what he's saying seriously. I think he's just gassed creatively and is trying to figure out how to cope as his bandmates keep wanting to create.

After watching this video I've come to the conclusion (once again) that I do not care what other people say, be it musical experts or music enjoyer. You showed 3 solos (Fade to Black, Master of Puppets and I don't know the 3rd one) and said that the first 2 are good but the last one is not. But listening to them I just enjoyed all 3 and will probably forget about them in less than a day (since I forgot about the first 2 despite listening to Master of Puppets on a weekly basis). And while I agree that Free Bird is carried by it's solo, Comfortably Numb is my favorite Pink Floyd song and I honestly don't remember the solo despite knowing the lyrics perfectly (some people like that song for the solo, I like for it's lyrics and dialogue like retelling of a nostalgic and psychedelic story). So why can't people have different opinions and enjoy what they wanna enjoy. If Kirk thinks that solos are not as important that's his opinion and that's why he doesn't write them as much. If somebody has a different opinion, good for them, but why throw shade?
