Tron: First Million

  • The Tron 'one hour million': an unachievable goal. The measure of a Tron master is how close he gets to it. Once upon a time in the '80s, I got within five minutes of it. As far as I know, no one has ever come closer.
    Here is my most recent effort. I've made several errors during this game. Misses and bad decisions, which cost precious time. However, I estimate that, even with flawless play, this time (1 hour, 7 minutes, 12 seconds) could be improved by no more than about a minute. This is the first million, which typically takes at least one minute more than subsequent millions (User millions).
    Notes on my gameplay:-
    (1) No hard spinning, as my hardware doesn't include a dial
    (2) What may look like reckless play is actually safe
    (3) Always know in advance which light cycle pattern to use.
    Notes on the recording:-
    (1) Edited to begin precisely when I press the start button
    (2) At the one hour mark, my score is 895,338
    (3) Edited to end as soon as my score reaches 1,000,000.
    This game continues into a second and third million. If you want to see a User million, go to • Tron: User Million , which picks up at the exact frame on which this one ends.
    Emulator: MAME
    ROM: tron
    Hardware: X Arcade Dual Joystick

    As a former arcade and MAME referee who has verified some of the greatest scores ever achieved over the last 6 years, I'm very impressed with this game play! Very nice!

    I did it on the real arcade machine back when Tron was new. After the 1st 3 or so light cycles stages, you can run only 2 different patterns to beat them. On the "Enforcers" tank levels, you can "park" in the lower left/upper right and they won't kill you if you need a bathroom break. And my last bit of Tron trivia. If you set the difficultly level to 2, you CAN shoot all the spiders (grid bugs) on one of the early stages. It just pulls you directly to the center, through the walls, or whatever.

      There are many more patterns for beating the light cycles stages than you think (see ua-cam.com/video/1zv333wxZFU/v-deo.html).
      Demonstration of best way to reach safe spot: ua-cam.com/video/l7gKWP7rkVc/v-deo.html.
      The IO clearance you referred to is shown here: ua-cam.com/video/WVafgizOwlg/v-deo.html

      Frank the enforcer tanks can't reverse so you can actually hide in any corner and I used this back in the 80s as well for that reason to go to the bathroom. Also for patterns on the bikes it's pretty much nothing specific whatever works either in slow speed or fast speed. I have done it many ways so try and do what works. Also the Grid bugs I have cleared them up on different screens but nothing I try and do on later rounds as they produce really fast.

    Nice gameplay. Even more amazing without using a spinner. Very consistent. Way to make it look easy.

    BITD I had all the patterns locked, the CONE would be where I'd get killed.

    You know this game like the back of your hand! While the game was fun, I think it's criminal that an actual 3-D "Space Paranoids" game was only released a few years ago. The movie cheated gamers into thinking the games would look that good in the immediate future.

    That was an amazing video! I noticed you can get over 10,000 points on the spider boards. But sometimes you just run straight in to the center to clear it when you could have gotten more points by shooting more. Why?

    • @AlmightyDreadlock
      @AlmightyDreadlock  8 років тому +1

      To keep up the scoring rate. At the time of making this recording, I'd not yet remastered all the spider stage methods, so it was better to do quick exits. If you don't score well over 10,000 points per spider stage, it's not worth the effort. It's possible to make the ten, in five out of the six stages, which you can see here: ua-cam.com/video/6ATX23pTRl4/v-deo.html

    amazing..would he have got a higher score if all mcp bricks and grid bugs were hit ? or was it just a speed run ?
    fantastic playing anyway.after 30 years its still a classic piece of arcade history.

    • @AlmightyDreadlock
      @AlmightyDreadlock  10 років тому

      Most of the time, I complete stages as quickly as possible, but this isn't a speed run. My method is designed to maximise scoring rate, so that I take as little time as possible to make a certain score (in this case, a million). MCP blocks are worth only 25 points, so I destroy only as many as necessary to get safely into the cone. Bugs are a healthy 50 points, so I hunt them in those stages where they swarm hardest

    • @lightcycle100
      @lightcycle100 10 років тому +1

      i always like to take all the blocks on the first 2 level for that extra 1000....same with the bugs.then on level 3 and upwards its just a case of.get the hell out of here..lol

    Thank you for uploading this. I have been watching this daily and I have taken a couple of you light cycle patterns and use them. I must ask though, on the light cycles (refering to this video) you use the small box , is there another pattern out there for these light cycles? Preferably a slow pattern. So far my Personal Best is 811,089.

    • @AlmightyDreadlock
      @AlmightyDreadlock  8 років тому

      There is a slow pattern for every stage (see ua-cam.com/video/1zv333wxZFU/v-deo.html)

    How do you know which light cycle pattern to use at each level?

  • @moonshock

    Couldn't you grind points on the grid bugs levels instead of going right into the I/O tower or would that shave off time and points gained elsewhere?

    • @AlmightyDreadlock
      @AlmightyDreadlock  6 років тому

      Bug hunting is indeed the best way to maximise your scoring rate, but it's not easy to do. At the time I played this game, I was not good enough to go all the way with it. To see some real bug hunting, check out ua-cam.com/video/6ATX23pTRl4/v-deo.html. That game has the best scoring rate you'll ever see

    Does the game show a score of 1.000.000 or does it start over after 999.999 ?

    • @AlmightyDreadlock
      @AlmightyDreadlock  7 років тому

      Scoreboard has six figures, so scores such as 1,000,000 and 2,000,000 are displayed as zero. Highest possible display score is 999,999.
