Has anyone ever watched a video of someone playing guitar and thought, "man, I wish the camera would go all shakey and / or zoom in and out real quick!" ?
its one of the things I'm most thankful for every time i see it happen. its like.. what, 90% of the time.. someone plays a really intricate solo live.. it cuts to the bass player.. or like the singer walking around?.. LOL.
Man, I love you. I have never been so obsessed over a band and for as long as i have with you guys before. Such an inspiration and privilege to be in a position to admire such awesome songwriting from you guys
I thought all guitarists into niche market prog metal music developed a strong picking hand wrist through their adolescent years? Or was that just me...? XP
His technique is crazy good, his picking hand looks as if in fast forward...I've been playing 15 years and I'm nowhere close to this type of level. Well done sir...love the band just heard it first time from Nothing More takeover on Sirius Octane....lifelong fan here now!!!
+Tr1ppy b3ard Practiced it for a good 2/3 years till it got solid. And then once you write songs utilizing it and play them all year around live, its even more practice. And proper warmups would help.
This entire song (and album) owns, but I can't get enough of that riff at 4:32. This is why Monuments is "progressive metal," and I refuse to group them into the bag of dicks genre now referred to as "djent." Browne's a groove machine, but his compositions/riffs are so much more than just "cool sounding". He always keeps things interesting and technical by incorporating displacement, polyrhythms, syncopation, metric modulation, and other rhythmic themes.
I find that people who call a whole genre of music a "bag of dicks" more of a "bag of dicks" than the genre that they mention. I personally consider Monuments to be a mix of progressive metal *AND* djent. Other bands that I include into what I believe is a prog metal/djent mix are Periphery, Polyphia (Albeit moving into prog metal than djent nowadays), and Intervals. They all feature elements popular in both djent and progressive metal, so much so that I believe they should be considered either a mix of both genres. But hey, it's just my opinion.
Mason Stanley I get that "bag of dicks" may be a bit extreme, but it was probably just meant to just accentuate a point. Considering that most of the "genre" does consist of bandwagon hoppers that don't do very innovative work, I can't entirely disagree. Guys like Browne and Misha were doing the whole "djent" thing before it was even considered a genre, so I too find it kinda hard to categorize them with what generally includes simplistic riffs/compositions. Nonetheless, I think we can all agree that this rules.
I wish I could downstroke as fast as he does at 3:57 and 6:40. That shit's god damn amazing. I think that's a huge advantage of having smaller hands as a guitarist. When I palm mute my pick rests over the neck pickup and there's just so much more distance I have to move my hand to accomplish a fast down pick while palm muting.
Wish I could buy that now. Awesome guitar looking guitar and I already have a Setius and it's the best guitar I've ever played so I know the outstanding workmanship Mayones provides. Killer song to.
CrazyBadCuber The description seems to simply list the standard specs for the guitars. Since John is both a Mayones and an EMG artist it makes sense for this guitar to have (or have had) EMG 57/66's in it. His newer customs have Bare Knuckles in them though, so I dunno what's going on with that.
2:05 it took me a while to notice it but theres a simple melody playing there and into the chorus. Also some clean/acoustic chords or something? But its very feint... I know they layer a lot of guitar parts for the studio but i wish i could hear it more clearer
Lots of people are commenting on his picking technique. The things that is so weird about it is that he almost exclusively uses downpicks. Also, his wrist has a big snap to it, so it looks really cool too!
This is in A#, right? His tone is so gutsy, it sounds lower. Sick down-picking, though. You get to times where you feel like you're getting a grip on guitar, then you watch something like this guy's down-picking and realize you have a long way to go.
For the first time I said "ok" for the next 399 times I said "fuck this". And please camera operator: if you are going to do wanky focus pulls a) make sure you have the focus stops set so it's 100% sharp on the rebound, and b) think twice about your aperture settings. My eyes hurt....
Hate to jump on the bandwagon, but I agree. John's playthroughs are always a real pleasure to watch. He looks so comfortable and in control...but the 'artistic camera' attempt killed this video for me. I actually minimized it and listened instead. Stunning guitar, great video quality, great audio quality...just lose the artistic camera fuckery, please.
Mayones makes up for in their guitar making what they lack in Camera operating and video editing. Like 4:54, what's the focus there? John's chest? 5:22, nice attempt at giving us a rundown of the neck and the head, too bad it was out of focus
Fave song on the album. I'd like to say it's easily the hardest, but Jinn and The Alchemist are just as fucking incredibly heavy, but I, The Destroyer takes the cake. I can't even imagine how Chris can scream like that
Does anyone know what emg's he's using? I know in the video discrtiption it says that it has seymore duncan nazgul and sentient pickups but they have emgs in the video
It says that is a Nazgul/Sentient...doesn't it say "EMG" on the pickups? I've never seen those before though, they're passive mounts, didn't even know EMG did passive pickups.
Where's John Browne from? I have a feeling he's southern but I can't place his accent. Does anyone know? Just being curious. Awesome player one of my current favourites.
yeah this guy... I mean, 1. you gotta be talented (check) and 2. you gotta relentlessly spend hours, days and years with your guitar (check). This guy really has it all. So many poor mans versions of what is commonly referred to as Djent. With all his gifts and hard work combined he manages to separate himself from the legions of douche bags "coming up" in this paradigm. Way to steer clear of the shit tsunami John Brown, shit yeah buddy. I truly appreciate your music. (not that it matters)
I didn't read through the previous comments but in the description it states the pickups are Duncans but in the video they really look like they say EMG. If they what kind are they?
+Josh Ramirez There really isnt a 'formula' and guys like these don't think about that either. Or everything becomes the same yknow 'gotta make sure it has X Y and Z'. All the time. I only consume media shot in that style. Its called refined taste -- look it up.
its one of the things I'm most thankful for every time i see it happen. its like.. what, 90% of the time.. someone plays a really intricate solo live.. it cuts to the bass player.. or like the singer walking around?.. LOL.
it's just so artsy and keEeEeEeEeEewwwwl. and original also.
the instrumental versions are just as magical as the final ones with vocals. phenomenal work. .
Thank you, it means a lot.
An absolute guitar idol of mine. Such inspirational technique, timing and composition.
probably one of their most genius/groovy
songs they've made! john's such a beast
Man, I love you. I have never been so obsessed over a band and for as long as i have with you guys before. Such an inspiration and privilege to be in a position to admire such awesome songwriting from you guys
I love you man. Amazing, guitar and playing man
good thing I'm not the only one
It's because Monuments is basically LSD coming out of your speakers.
3:57.. that FFFFFFriff, them supporting Karnivool next year is the best thing to ever happen in modern day prog metal.
Glad to hear from you.
these riffs groove so hard john browne is a killer player and writer
His picking technique is phenomenal. Holy shit my wrist hurts just watching it.
I thought all guitarists into niche market prog metal music developed a strong picking hand wrist through their adolescent years? Or was that just me...? XP
Jonam Ross hue
hue?
hue.
Not on a guitar (yet), but in certain contexts yes...
I say this everytime I see John play, live or otherwise. Right hand of an absolute God. Pleasure to watch.
John "downstrokes" Browne
+Chris Meier John Brownstroke. -- yikes.
I would give John Browne some downstrokes to get as good as him.
+Kyle Bishop Djohn Brownstrokes
Lmao
yes
I've watched this thousand times and like this instrument version better than the original one
1:34 - When John gives you that look, You know you're grooving home with him tonight.
Sean Conway Or the "get ready for hot sex" nod at 2:01
Cody Woodsmanson 6:20 The look when receiving "Hot Sex" : P
5:44 - I need to add that little trick to my arsenal, sounds so cool!!!
IS mayonnaise an instrument? Yes Patrick. Mayonnaise is an instrument.
+Mike Hart THANK GOD, I wasn't the only one thinking this!
His technique is crazy good, his picking hand looks as if in fast forward...I've been playing 15 years and I'm nowhere close to this type of level. Well done sir...love the band just heard it first time from Nothing More takeover on Sirius Octane....lifelong fan here now!!!

Theres this song I'm trying to cover, Makeshift Harmony. I dont get how he can control the strings so perfectly.
0.30 the toPPPP

Amen, djent is an overused butchered term and John Browne is the fucking man.
I find that people who call a whole genre of music a "bag of dicks" more of a "bag of dicks" than the genre that they mention.
I personally consider Monuments to be a mix of progressive metal *AND* djent. Booby Miles Meshuggah started it all, when Browne and Misha were still wee little tikes in metal.
Mayonaise?
I can't tell if he's making a joke. Can anyone confirm the pronunciation? Mayonnaise or May-yones?
***** May-yones I think his british accent doesn't help lol
It's pronounced "Mai-o-nez."
Майоне́з "Провансаль"! Ммм
like you never ate one...

I can't handle the amount of perfectness in this video. Amazing and 100 % air-tight playing! And that guitar seems really great too.
The song title should be "I, the destroyer of guitars".
Why
@@came_leo_n3836 for that answer you have to have a hand like him
Or I the destroyer of my own hand
Wow at the part at 2:12, what a beast sounding section.
dat 'P' pronunciation of the toP! 0:30
and it is stained blaCK.
Bubinga neCK
...duvelle eliTE model
He's practicing his Drumkit skills.
🤣🤣
THIS RIFF IS AWESOME!
This is the first time I have heard this guy, he is awesome.
check out his band they kick ass
Wish I could buy that now.
Awesome guitar looking guitar and I already have a Setius and it's the best guitar I've ever played so I know the outstanding workmanship Mayones provides. Killer song to.
1:38 this part coupled with Chris’ scream is heavenly
I'm always amazed by his picking techniques.
Its EMG not Nazguls! Awesome video and even better guitar!
Had the chance to talk with John after a set where they opened for Devin Townsend. Great guy. Amazing guitar player.
I like his riffs and Guitar tone! Very interesting and groovy.
This literally gave me chills.
0:51 you know your a big deal when Mayones and Mayonnaise endorse you. 🔥🤘
John, your riffs are so trancey yet they pummel me!
Why doe the description say the pickups are Seymour Duncan when we can clearly see in the video that they are EMG?
CrazyBadCuber The description seems to simply list the standard specs for the guitars. Since John is both a Mayones and an EMG artist it makes sense for this guitar to have (or have had) EMG 57/66's in it. His newer customs have Bare Knuckles in them though, so I dunno what's going on with that.
Wow I didn’t expect to find you here, 3 years ago or not.
2:05 it took me a while to notice it but theres a simple melody playing there and into the chorus. Also some clean/acoustic chords or something? But its very feint... I know they layer a lot of guitar parts for the studio but i wish i could hear it more clearer
It's the same background melody as Garden of Sankhara!
The description says the guitar uses Seymour pickups, but John is using EMG. He is endorser from EMG
In the description are just the general specs of the duvell series
Elton de Araujo Guerdão He is using Duncans mainly now tho.
He has Bareknuckles in a few guitars but he is mainly using SDs.
Tell me the music in the intro video from 0:01. I really liked the music
Brother I wish I knew BUT remember listening to the guys music on UA-cam all the time years ago. It still drives me crazy I can’t remember his channel
Stop the out of focus shait !
1:38 something satisfying about that 12th fret bend that slips out from under this finger. Mayo is an instrument after all.
FFS.. did you hire the guy who worked on the Bourne movies to shoot and edit this eye gouging mess?
hahaha i know right. Its like Just use one shot so us nerds can geek out and get sweaty at this!
Makes me nauseous
Seen this guy with his band monuments live in mtc, cologne. And what shall I say? They are AWESOME live musicians and great guys =)
Absolutely amazing Browne... you are a boss!!!!!!!! Sick guitar sick tone sick playing. Hats off to Roy Harper.
Lots of people are commenting on his picking technique. The things that is so weird about it is that he almost exclusively uses downpicks. Also, his wrist has a big snap to it, so it looks really cool too!
He MAXED OUT the custom features on That Axe. GREAT sound, GREAT look.
This is in A#, right? His tone is so gutsy, it sounds lower. Sick down-picking, though. You get to times where you feel like you're getting a grip on guitar, then you watch something like this guy's down-picking and realize you have a long way to go.
Ummmm it's in F#...
J Har F# D# G# C# D# G# C# your welcome :)
leon taylor Is that tuning some sort of variation on DADGAD?
Wilde Jono yeah it is and its amazing i play in the exact same tuning as him and its great
+leon taylor Thanks man. Appreciated.
I don't care about the filming. This sound of art is whats got me going!!!!
Stop it with the choppy zoom in zoom out stuff. It's not cool.
For the first time I said "ok" for the next 399 times I said "fuck this". And please camera operator: if you are going to do wanky focus pulls a) make sure you have the focus stops set so it's 100% sharp on the rebound, and b) think twice about your aperture settings. My eyes hurt....

Stunning guitar, great video quality, great audio quality...just lose the artistic camera fuckery, please.
Excellent song and guitar work! BRAVO!
cant even tell if he has all his fingers on his pick hand cuz it moves to god damn fast. guys a machine! love it
Mayones makes up for in their guitar making what they lack in Camera operating and video editing.
Like 4:54, what's the focus there? John's chest? 5:22, nice attempt at giving us a rundown of the neck and the head, too bad it was out of focus
That guitar is sooo nice!
Seeing him alternate pick is weird
Beautiful guitar
Just steady badass playing!
Description says seymour duncan, but I believe I see emg 57-66s
Rocketronica Dellaroma you are correct probably the only thing I would change about guitar. very nice
the guitar probably comes when Duncans in production he probably asked for emgs in his.
This is incredible. Absolutely kickass guitar as well, love Mayones guitars!
3:21 wow great stuff
Fave song on the album. I'd like to say it's easily the hardest, but Jinn and The Alchemist are just as fucking incredibly heavy, but I, The Destroyer takes the cake. I can't even imagine how Chris can scream like that
Why haven't you guys mixed through any of his live playing mix? ....great way to showcase a guitar....
that album is jus sooooo good
I don't always take amphetamines, but when I do, I'm this guys video editor!
A true master at his craft
Is it just me or does this sound miles better without vocals?
Those down strokes are nuts. It's like he does it to intimidate me.
Totally has that DOOM 2016 tone. Haven't heard that anywhere else. I wonder if it really is the mayones that is making that happen.
Is Mayones an instrument?
+Seemooreth Condiment.
this is my fave
Yea it is, you should also check out Mustard drums
Is camera man having a seizure with his hand on zoom control?
Does anyone know what emg's he's using? I know in the video discrtiption it says that it has seymore duncan nazgul and sentient pickups but they have emgs in the video
These are EMG 55-7 and a 66-7.
57/66. Pretty sure I read that Browne actually preferred the Nazgul/Sentient set tho.
John Brown = Legend in the making
Mayones guitar and Monuments...a perfect weapon!
I love it when I stumble upon awesomeness
One of the best modern sounding Guitar and Pickups on earth. Period.
It says that is a Nazgul/Sentient...doesn't it say "EMG" on the pickups? I've never seen those before though, they're passive mounts, didn't even know EMG did passive pickups.
They're EMG 57/66's and they're not passives, the only passive sets are the EMG HZ's and the EMG HZ ALX (Alexi Laiho signature).
Thanks god I've found out what pickups he is using finally
Where's John Browne from? I have a feeling he's southern but I can't place his accent. Does anyone know? Just being curious. Awesome player one of my current favourites.
UK
I know he's from England I don't know where though.
JakeyBaby6 oh my b haha, and wherever Bedfordshire is, I believe.
Bedfordshire that sounds right yeah, down south like I thought. Thanks man.
I think around Milton Keynes, that was where FellSilent were from and that was his and Acle's project together.
"I'm very excited to finally be endorsed by mayonnaise" you giggled
So why does the description say that the guitar has a Seymour Duncan Sentient/Nazgul set when the guitar that John is using has EMG's?
sooo in the description it says it comes with seymour duncan nazgul and sentient, but the one hes playing has emgs.........
he downpicks that whole line at 5:10 so seamlessly god damn
Where can I get that shirt?
Dope guitar & playing. Monuments
Inspiration as guitarrist!
yeah this guy... I mean, 1. you gotta be talented (check) and 2. you gotta relentlessly spend hours, days and years with your guitar (check). This guy really has it all. So many poor mans versions of what is commonly referred to as Djent. Those are the best pickups ever
whats the name of the intro?
tripture - lines
So smooth .. like it alot
Absolutely love John Browne's playing and Monuments, But I find nothing shows off his talent more like zooming focus blurs and angle cuts : P
I didn't read through the previous comments but in the description it states the pickups are Duncans but in the video they really look like they say EMG. If they what kind are they?
John Browne is a monster, and I want that guitar so damn bad.
concentrate.....the riff is telling you a story....and when a musician conquers that....uffffff, nothing more to say
His face: When you play and realize you created one of the heaviest Fuck You riffs on planet Earth.
his tone is massive!
5:44 THAT SHIT made me fuckin LOSE IT at the gym when I heard it. Such a nasty sound WOO
25.4 or 27” scale length?...if this is a 25.4 then it’s impressive it sounds that good with a F# tuning
Anybody know what is the tuning of this song? I know some of their songs are in open tuning
why in the specs of the guitar they say he's using seamor Duncan's when he's using emgs?
+Jim White The specs for the standard Duvell Elite have Seymour Duncan's. His has EMG's. This one is his custom.
What is the formula in writing such groovy riffs. Is always starting on upbeats?
+Josh Ramirez There really isnt a 'formula' and guys like these don't think about that either. Or everything becomes the same yknow 'gotta make sure it has X Y and Z'.
Groovy riffs can be in all different ways. Diff tempos, amount of notes, amount of strings used.
Set a metronome or a drumbeat to a tempo you can nod your head too, and just play around.
Try using bends, octaves, and just let things ring out for a bit now and then.
i see emg's in the guitar not seymour duncans?
Such tight picking technique!!
is there a full track for the song used in the mayones intro? i really dig it
Yes, it is. Tripture - Lines.
Mayonnaise? I didn't know Hellmans make guitars :p
