I remember reading “Avengers vs the Marvel universe” because it looked neat at my local comic book shop that I didn’t go to that often, that I went to as a 10-ish year old. And I remember reading it and going
“Why DID they make this??”
So I’m glad Sal had the same reaction to this line of books 💀
About how the infection transmission works in this series, it isn’t transmissible through bites. We see Hawkeye get bit and nothing happens. It’s that the pathogen fell into the sewers when Punisher blew it up months ago, so everyone is already infected but trigger at different points (hence how Cap, Beast and Thing got turned out of nowhere and why Human Torch turned after he died without making contact with infected). This cannibal plague is a mutation of the original isotope Punisher got into himself, meaning he’s the only one that carries the intended effects of enhanced resistance to the environment and diseases.
So tl;dr everyone is infected but turn spontaneously and inconsistently, except for people with healing factors and seemingly naturally immune humans like Reed and Black Panther.
The weird publication order might be why this story ends so abruptly. Punisher vs MU was published first and was also the last chapter of the story so a lot of missing details were already known to us by then when we picked up Wolverine vs. MU. Its like the Ouija series where the second movie is the prequel of the first movie.
Loved this, found it on Marvel Unlimited a few years back. If only they made it more obvious there were sequel series. Two years went by before I learned there was a Hawkeye chapter
Also, the Punisher series was published first.
Publication order goes Punisher, Wolverine, Hawkeye
Believe chronologically it's Hawkeye, Wolverine (though they're at the same time), then Punisher

For wolverine we see the fall, then for avengers we see them trying to handle the situation, the we see how the world ended up in punisher.
I really enjoyed how clueless Ash was in Marvel Zombies and Army of Darkness
Weirdest part was him getting eaten by Howard the duck then coming back and seeing that version of him getting eaten. I'm sure he's like "well there's something you don't see everyday

Theory on why Punisher didn't turn: he was already such a murderous bastard the virus wasn't able to CHANGE that part of his brain so it had no place to root. Even Wolverine and Deadpool have a level of disgust with killing that Frank doesn't.

Maybe Cap turns because the Super Soldier Serum had been fighting the virus like Deadpool and Wolverine's healing factor, but unlike the latter two Cap had a limited amount the serum in him so the virus destroyed what he had in him during their stand?
I gotta say I have been watching comicstorian for years, and I'm a big fan. However if I want to know what the hell is going on in a comic book (because I have almost always had no clue) this is where I will go from now on. Sal makes it simple and easy to understand and all of them make me laugh.
Interesting... I've only read Marvel Universe VS the Punisher. Sooo long ago though, can't remember much. Sal covering all of them would be pretty damn fun.
I was sitting here watching this, and I’m like, “It feels like I’ve read this before.” Then it hit me. This is a PG-13 Marvel version of Crossed. There’s this virus that turns people into cannibalistic, perverted, murdering, sex craved, psychotic monsters. They’re still them, but they love the new them. This is that. Minus the casual sexual assault.
I was really waiting for it to be revealed that Frank was actually turned but didn't seem any different because his worldview was already the same as the cannibals.
Don’t know how I have never heard about this until now, but I’m glad you are covering them throughout the year. This will be a fun universe to revisit every now and again
I still hope one day we get a part 2 to this series

Awesome episode! I've been hoping you guys would cover one of these series for a long time, so hearing you'll get to the other two eventually (or Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness) has me pumped. There are indeed a lot of unanswered questions all the series bring up, but I seem to remember that the virus got into the global water supply once Punisher released it and slowly changed humanity over the months until it manifested, so that's why people seem to get infected at random; they already were, and it's just a matter of "turning".
If Galactus did get the disease, would we even notice?
Also they tried to infect The watcher in one of the marvel zombies books. Uatu mentioned he has no actual physical form, what we see is just a projection.

I am a big Jonathan Maberry fan and this has the hallmarks of his writing in his novels. Cold war weapon that turns people into zombie cannibals. People going insane as the world breaks down around them and randomly singing. Characters getting gruesomely hacked up. 20 minutes into this episode, all classic Maberry stuff
I knew about Marvel Universe vs Punisher but had no idea it was a third part of a story so this was a big surprise and a really great episode can't wait for the others.
One of the most haunting moments in a book for me was when the blob walked into the Chinese buffet and ate everyone in it, man I think this is leauges above marvel zombies

Man, I read this stuff back in middle school. I always liked this one the best out of the three, since it's the only one with kind of an optimistic ending. I hope you guys continue this series and the Marvel Zombies ones, especially the 2nd and Return.

I love this series its just fascinating to me, Still have yet to read the avengers one.
But it has its bad parts, Ironman's death anyone. And I love how it actually adress the problem with the punisher and his methods. Frankly I always thought he would make for a better horror character than a super hero

To ease some of the confusion
The cannibals in the comic arent undead zombie corpses. The virus makes them into cannibal cavemen more or less. When punisher shot the mafia the gene therapy fluid spilled into the ocean. So (almost) everyone is already infected. Some people are randomly turned and anger also triggers the infection. So johnny storm didnt die and come back as a zombie but the anger of being crushed by the hulk changed him. This is basically a rage virus story. If you're wondering how hulk was able to bite wolverine's arm clean off, the rage virus made hulk the angriest he's ever been( according to wolverine)

I'm going to sound like a pedantic asshole by saying this, but I'd argue that the monsters in this comic resemble the infected from The Crazies more than they do zombies.

I will admit that I avoided the Marvel Universe vs X comics like the plague so I had no idea the Wolverine one was just one part of a 3 part story. I do the same thing with X Kills the Marvel Universe comics, but the art for this one was much better than expected.
I LOVE MARVEL UNIVERSE VS! My favorite one is the Punisher one, but the Avengers one has some moments that had me like: "What the fuck?"

I read the final issue of this in a barns and noble magazine aisle back in 2012, and was so confused. I also couldn’t find any information about it years later and thought I might’ve imagined it.
Which brings me to my question: does anyone remember a Batman book (most likely some kind of elseworlds-like title) from either the 80s or 90s, where everything is a weird hybrid of gothic and sci-fi (I seem to recall Bruce being a cyborg or something?) and Arkham is a hellish underground place. I remember reading it when I was maybe 10 years old, and can’t find anything about it.
That sounds to me like Batman: I, Joker which is an insane story. The Batman isn’t Bruce where he does have something over his right eye which could be what you are thinking of with him being a cyborg. He has the villains in tanks where it does seem to be a combination of gothic and sci-fi. The ending of that story is Joker becoming influenced by Bruce Wayne who was Batman to become the new Batman and fight the current one.
Fuck it, get the infinity gems, and erase everyone on earth and bring them all back uninfected.
I loved this whole series. Hopefully Mayberry sheds more light on it. The ending of Avengers vs the Marvel Universe haunts me to this day

Maberry loves writing zombie stories so I would not be surprised if he pitched it. Or it could be Marvel thought of it then was like “hey let’s get that guy who wrote a YA zombie series and that Patient Zero book.”

Don't know how canon or if it has been retconned, but Spider-man is the person Reed goes to for these kind of things as he considers him the better bio chemist. As soon as Spider-man was infected one of their main cure chances was already gone and I consider that the reason Reed had already declared finding a cure impossible.
I really hope that Marvel Zombies vs Army of Darkness is something you all can do sometime in the future. Its great to see Ash interact with the marvel universe
