I think Robert Lamm is such a freak'n lyrical genius!
"Can you tell me, please don't tell me" is exactly like something me and my conflicted, confused self would say!
Love Robert for writing this and Peter for singing it so beautifully!

These old videos of Chicago are great. Especially watching Peter sing whether it is from 40+ years ago or a week ago. He is an excellent musician with much talent still at the age of 73.
And to further add, he looks as good as he sounds!

listen how the audience roars every time Peter comes in on another soaring verse! Edited to add; they could have been roaring after an amazing run from Terry doing his intuitively perfect guitar work. He knew just how to set up his band, be it the horns or whoever was doing vocals. Terry was always the perfect counterbalance. A man one with his instrument. Such passion and such heart. A rare gem!
Peter's vocals were perfection the entire concert. All players excelled. We who grew up with this band were lucky to have such a band growing with us.

I could never understand why this song NEVER made it onto their Greatest Hits. It is their ANTHEM of LIVE Performances. Consistently receiving Air-Play her on three diff Classic Music Radio Stations. I dont know if the typical music listener could really Appreciate what Chicago was at the time, had it NOT been for their VOCALS aside. Musically (w/out vocals), they were at the top, Creme-de la-Creme. There will prolly never be a band quite like them. KUDO's for sharing this Video. Thanks :) J.

    • @moodylicious

yes. He usually is at perfect pitch. Non-vocalists have no idea how special it is to hit practically every note with such ease & perfection. I think I have heard all versions of this out there and he really was Epic in his delivery. This song is pure platinum. The punctuation of horns paired with Peter's voice and the reduction in tempo leading up to last two verses is one of the best part of this magical song.

Au60schild Seraphine was often nicely positioned front and center between Kath and Cetera in their early years, before the horns took that spot, probably at the insistence of that stage attention hog, James Pankow.

Hi Rickobear - He is a lifelong Cubs fan - he was a 'longhair' at the Dodgers stadium at a game in 1970... he got involved in a fight with some military guys - three got him off by himself and put him in intensive care. His jaw was wired shut and he went on the road like that! ;-) He also wrote 'Where Do We Go from Here' while convalescing... he was watching men land on the moon and thought... where do we go ... from here?

PC often chewed gum while singing to keep his throat moist... he still does either have mints, gum or water when he performs. Plus, he had just had his jaw broken in three places two years before this concert - says he still sings with a clinched jaw to this day :).
Actually, its one of my fav things about this vid - when he leans back and chews the gum... lol.

With the Japanese subtitles (I believe), I'm going to assume this is from 1972, when they recorded their 'live in Japan' concert. It wasn't released here in the states til several years ago. Peter sang this song in Japanese too, as well as the song, 'Lowdown'. I didn't truly appreciate Peter's playing bass til I bought that double cd. Wow!

The list of new Hall of Fame candidates just came out (late Sept. '11) and Chicago is not on it. This band created and defined a genre of music (brass rock) and that's good enough for admission to the Hall imo. Hendrix used to pay to watch Terry Kath play for cryin' out loud !! They finally got around to Alice Cooper, now it's time for Chicago and Yes. I miss Terry and his style.
