  • In this video I demonstrate how easy it is to change the oil in your Porsche 911-997.2. Save yourself some serious coin and do it yourself. Very simple to perform.

Great, to the point DIY video. After 10 years of ownership of my 997.2 C4, I’m finally venturing into changing my own oil. Thank you.

The 997.2 is probably one of the easiest cars ever to change the oil. You totally got this.

Great new video, I think the reason why your videos are great is because of their simplicity... keep them like that.
    Thank you Sir!!

This is a great detailed video. Would love to see more! Planning on purchasing a 997 within 1-2 months so I will be saving this!

Thanks for the kind words. I typically make videos as I work on the car. Knock on wood, it’s been very reliable. If you have any suggestions let me know. I anticipate a brake job at some point.

Very well done and great details. I only have one suggestion and that would be to get a shallower pan for your oil or if you can let the jack down without breaking the one you have then just do that. By jacking it up on the side of the plug you are sending dirty oil away from the drain and will be running that dirty oil after your tune up.

    • @didifixthat7910

Great suggestion. Next time I will use a lower profile pan so I don’t have to jack up the car at all. It’s a very simple car to change the oil on. Thanks for watching.

In the UK we buy oil in litres and you need c. 9 litres in a 997.1. If I order a service kit for oil I get one 5l bottle and four 1l bottles, but if I order two 5l bottles instead it is much cheaper, even though I'm getting an extra litre of oil!
I also cut open the old filter to check if there are any bits of metal shavings or other debris caught in the filter.
    Thanks again for the videos.

p jay We get the same discount here on the other side of the pond if we buy a 5 quart bulk container. Just curious how much it costs over there for an oil change? If I went to Walmart I could get the oil I need for around $30 but .... I don’t trust their oil enough to put in the car. Good idea on cutting open the filter. I’ll fish it out of the trash and do an autopsy. Hope I don’t see anything.

@@didifixthat7910 I got 10l of Millers XF Longlife for the equivalent of $110 at the current exchange rate when I did mine. I could have got some other big name alternatives for less but Millers gets a lot of recommendations.
If you do cut open the filter it's unbelievably easy to mistake droplets of oil for metal shavings so be REALLY careful. Touch anything you see that worries you to check it, honestly.

So I fished my filter out of the trash and did a dissection. Everything looked good. Didn’t see any metal or clumps of debris. This is the first time I’ve cut into a filter. Very enlightening and something I will continue to do. I will also pick up a magnetic drain plug as well. Thanks again for the recommendation/advice.

It is easier if you push the new oil filter in first and then the cap instead of trying to do both in 1 go.

You might be correct. I haven’t tried that technique before. I will try it on the next oil change. Thanks for commenting.

+1 on pushing the filter on first, then the cap...less chance of creasing or kinking the filter...

Thanks for the great video! this really helped clarifying the steps. I'm going to do my own oil change for the first time this weekend, just couple quick questions 1) do you mind sharing the specs of the drain plug/washers? (or just what to google for exactly) 2) when you say in your videos "Porsche recommends xx pound of torque", where do you find that information? I've looked in my manuals but may have missed it?
also, I'm assuming that any mechanics would be able to help in disposing the old oil right?
Thanks and keep those videos coming!!

Glad to hear that your going to tackle an oil change. It’s literally one of the easiest things to do to your car. I’ll do my best to answer your questions. (1) The crush washer is a generic aluminum washer. I bought a pack of 10 from Amazon but whenever I buy a oil change kit they include a new drain plug and washer. I do not know the exact size. (2) The torque specs are things that I googled from several different sources. I don’t think that Porsche puts that information in the owners manual. Also I did discover that if your car has an aftermarket magnetic drain plug, the torque spec is less but, I can’t remember the specifics. I think it’s manufacturer specific. (3) Disposal of used oil is easy to do. Places that come to mind are WalMart, most auto parts retailers like AutoZone or Advanced Auto and the final place is the city where I live has a recycling center that takes old motor oil. You could also try a local mechanic that you know to dispose of the oil like you suggested. Good luck with your oil change. The Porsche 911 is really one of the easiest vehicles to change the oil that I have worked on. Thanks for subscribing as well.

So I found the specs for the drain plug crush washer. These are from the rock auto web site. They are as follows outside diameter 24mm, inside diameter 18mm, and width 1.5mm. Hope this helps. Also it’s made out of aluminum.

@@didifixthat7910 thanks, I ended up ordering one from Suncoast Porsche, their website layout makes tracking down the right part pretty easy; also, thought I'd list out the amazon links for folks who may be wondering where to start in getting the parts/tools,

Thanks for all the links to the supplies and tools used to complete the job. I’m sure it will help others. Man, that oil you use is pricey stuff. Just curious how frequently you change your oil. Even though I use full synthetic, I change my oil every 5,000 miles as it’s cheap insurance to protect the engine. I think one could stretch the mileage a little further in between the oil changes. Thanks again for the comments and I’m sure you will be saving some serious coin doing this job yourself.

@@didifixthat7910 I change it every 5K as well, though I've been using these Amazon giftcards I get through work for the past oil changes, I would bring the oil to the shop and they would charge labor+filter, still $100+ though, which is funny cause all the tools I'm getting here are just around 100 so I'm looking forward to some big savings. Also looked into those pressure bleeders for the brake job (I see them around 50 on Amazon?), so might consider that if my mechanic quotes a large number haha

Your video answered all my questions except one…….How do you reset your “oil service” light?
My mechanic has retired & closed shop so I need an alternative while I search. Thanks

    • @didifixthat7910
      @didifixthat7910  2 роки тому

Unfortunately you need to buy a scan tool that will reset the light. Hopefully a member of the local Porsche club has one, if not they are on Amazon for $150 or so. No other way to do it that I am aware of. Glad the video helped and this car is the easiest car ever to perform an oil change on other than resetting the light. Thanks for watching and subscribing.
