@@Thefeatherbender Unfortunately I ran out of hooks and bought some , boy did I get rubbish, There isn't 2 the same shape and every single one has a sharp edge at the eye, it is brilliant for cutting the thread. the faults are too numerous to go on. I have some good hooks but in very small sizes so, lots of midges .
I really like tying on Klinkhammer hooks, especially the new improved style. I'm wandering about in your past Barry, your videos have become required daily tradition.

Hi Barry once again a wonderful demonstration of your skill Just a question regarding the winding of the hackle does the shiney side of the hackle face down while winding or does it matter, regards Ed
Hi Edward, thanks. Totally depends on how you would like the hackle to sit. If you tie it in the traditional way, shiny side up, you will get a umbrella style hackle, if you tie it in shiny side down, you will get a parachute hackle that is more like a up side down umbrella. Give them both a go and see for your self.
Barry i noticed that you use a Petitjean bobbin and I would love to purchase the Petitjean tool kit #3 however I can't find it or many other of the Petitjean tools on the planet. Are they still being made. There's no information anywhere about his company other than maintenance. Dies anyone have an idea what's going on with this company.
Hi Fred, Yes I use the Petitjean and the C&F bobbin holders, both make excellent tools! You can order the Petitjean tool kit from his Swedish dealers: flydressing.se/produkt/petitjean-tool-set-8-pieses/
NB. The Petitjean TT bobbin holder is loved by fly tyers and hated by others, I love mine but they can prove to be difficult for a similar price take a look at the C&F tools. Good luck!
Nice, a question if you don't mind, why you strip one side of the hackle?
Hi Gustavo, If you look at the finished wrapped hackle you will see that ALL the hackle fibres point downwards, you can only achieve this by stripping one side of the hackle.

First of all, a very pretty fly. But I would like to ask you something, because the Klinkhamer I have seen it tied with very different materials and some of them with a body whose floating condition is very different. For example, I have seen a very nice one, by the way, with a UNI YARN body, and as far as I know, uni yarn is a thick strand of wool, and the wool does not have a good float condition. My question is, what do you advise as a general rule for the body of this type of fly, as an emerging fly that it is? Absorbent or non-absorbent material? After all, the body of an emerging fly is going to be under the surface film of the water. I would greatly appreciate your advice. Thanks Barry ... and take care.
Hi Jorge, thanks. With the Klinkhamer being an emerger the body should be made of a material that will sink, its the hackle that keeps this pattern floating so you can use most dubbing materials.

Just received your book as a Christmas gift from my wife.... Well done Sir!!! I have a question for you in regards to this fly. In the book/video you state that you use a "slightly larger" hackle in tying these fly's. My question is, "how much larger... a hook size larger?" Again... Hi Richard thanks. Thats correct, I have tied so many of these that I choose my hackle from sight without measuring but I guess try one a hook size larger and see how you feel about it. I personally feel that it improves presentation no end.

Is this a dry fly Hackle?
I see you tie these flies hackle points down. Oliver Edwards the famous fly tier dressed his like you do until Hans Van Klinken told him that the correct way was hackle points upward. This means the fly sinks into the surface film and all you see is the white wing post and when it blinks out you strike. Personally, I wouldn't be so impertinent as to contradict the masters. Either way works for me.
Hi Bob, Thanks. Not always it depends on what they are and what I intend using them for. I know both Oliver and Hans very well and they also do it both ways.
Actually Bob, Here in Scandinavia, for fishing flies, the Swedes tie them hackle point up and the Norwegians tie them hackle point down, figure that!
Interesting thing. Commercially tied Klinks in the UK are all size 14 or smaller. Oliver Edwards says they are only paraduns. Hans Van Kliniken insisted they be tied on big hooks size 12 and larger, very rarely size 14. He went fishing with Oliver Edwards on the Wharfe and when people saw his big flies they initially laughed. The soon stopped laughing 40 Grayling later. Edwards was so impressed he took Van Klinken to his evening class at Wakefield college so they could spread the word.
Hi Bob, Hans designed the Klinkhåmer (correct name) here in Norway on the river glomma for fishing grayling and he normally ties it in a size 6 sometimes #8 but it does work in the smaller sizes also... Its a cracking fly!
yes the fly is wonderful but will it float ? but fly tyers fail to ever mention will this fly float. from my experience they sink. any tips..i have applied floatants!!!.many thanks for the excellent instruction.
Hi Abdool, Thanks, Yes it floats like a cork, maybe you are using the wrong hook or not enough hackle!
It’s important to use polypropylene and soak it with floatant
