I met the Klinkhammer fly inventor Hans van Klinken while fly fishing in Kuhmo. He explains why Klinkhamer is so effective fly. The first class fish finder fly has many name variations like Klinkhåmer, Klinkhamer, Klinkhammer and Klinkhåmer Special. It is imitation of a caddis larvae, and the parachute lets the fly float visible while the fish see the fly in the surface film. That makes Klinkhamer so effective fly.
In this video you’ll see:

Absolutely stunning. Well done. I am very proud to be a part of this great little video!!!
Thanks Hans! I'm super happy to hear you like it! :D
I got my very first fly fishing fish with black klinkhammer made by my brother. One of my go-to patterns.
Thanks to Hans Van Klinken for this pattern - it’s my go-to when the fish aren’t rising especially in the summer months when they tend to feed a little deeper. It’s very satisfying to “induce” a rise from a fish!
To help with your question of how to keep the "loops" on the rod from gathering Ice and freezing. We use a wax that Loon puts out called "Stanley's Ice Off". Automotive finish waxes will work. Also wood floor wax will work. It is important to clean your line before fishing, many line cleaners contain waxes and silicone that helps compared to a naked line. I also recommend stripping baskets for your river adventures in freezing temperatures. I fish for "Steelhead" in March in Eastern Washington under similar conditions.
Klinkhammer is awsome dry fly. My absolute favorite ! Since 1991 I have fished with this fly, when I first time read an article about it from Finnish fly fishing magazine. I have caught numerous graylings, brown trouts and rainbows with that fly here in Finland. It´s excellent allround dry fly. It catches fish which are feeding emerging caddis and may flies, stone flies and gnats, just vary the size and colour what insect you want to imitate......
And as Hans said, it fishes very well even though there is no raises at all and fish aren´t feeding on surface film. Large size Klinkhammer is excellent attractor fly, I have caught lot of fish large klinkhammers middle of the day when fish are passive and not feeding actively.
Many thanks for Hans developing that great pattern !
Right! Totally agree :)
I tied a klinkhammer fishing for stocked trout, largemouth bass, and bluegills in a local pond. The takes were like the movie Jaws! You could see the wake coming from beneath the surface! Thank you Hans and thanks for sharing the great video and the fly!
Hi Its Paul from two Novice Anglers. We enjoyed your video. Jackie and I have been fishing for a year now. I was given a fly from a fellow angler. It was like a
Thank you for this lovely video. I am a devotee of the fly. Although here in England
we fish in the rain not the snow like you!! I have fishing on two lakes and the Klinkhammer
olive and red tag are most effective. I do fish very light flourocarbon leader which also seems to help.
It is great that you have met Mr K himself and you have a precious fly from him. Tight lines as we say here.
Thank you very much for the pattern .When you held up the Klinkhamer fly on the video I paused the video and copied the fly pattern you were holding up. Cannot wait for spring. PS. I did "LIKE " THE VIDEO Thank you. I have all of the Klinkhamer hooks from size 12- 20 . I tied 2- 14 and 2-16 flies.
Wow, I didn’t know the klinkhammer was so useful. I love all of your b-roll. So engaging.
Thanks Heather.
Beautiful scenery and I bet is was so awesome to be able to meet and chat with the founder of the Klinkhamer in person. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks :)
That's a great story behind the fly....and another awesome video.
Thanks :)
You're welcome.
Great video and a very effective pattern! Any fly that represents a vulnerable fly is a good imitation!👍
Big fan of the Klinkhammer. They work very well in the small brook trout streams of central Wisconsin.
Thx for sharing this beautiful scenery
Thank you :)
how cool to meet the originator. that little klinkhammer is an amazing fish catcher in streams and lakes in the Sierra Nevada backcountry of California. especially like mentioned, when the fish are eating emergers and refuse dry flys.
I found out about the klinkhammer from some Finnish UA-cam video. one guys says something like, "the fish is sipping in the film you know I would use a klinkhammer". the other guys more of a hipster traditionalist and says something like "blasphemy, never a klinkhammer" I think he eventually uses it and catches monster brown trout with it.
I ran across some in olive and burgundy to fish when the are focused in on and eating emergers. they work well.
I had fished klinkhamer as only dry fly for couple of years.... that speaks enough about it. Now for a few years i was experimenting with other flies... but lately klinks are coming back into my boxes. Just tied variation of it on a size 32hook. But size 12 is my favorite
totally :D
Wow 😮 flyfishing in the snow!!! That looks awesome 🙌🏼👏
yep, since our winter is long it's nice to be able to start the season early :D
I use the Klinkhammer on the local reservoir, a Klink and Dink or Washing Line set up gives me something to focus on in anticipation of a take, it is very effective and when you do get a take the heart rate goes up. Tight lines from Scotland.
It's absolutely beautiful there. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for commenting Pauline :)
Great video. I think too the best flies are the ones that sit in the film
Thanks for watching this Klinkhammer fly video ... Are you a Klinkhamer fan like I am? What's your best catch with Klinkhammer fly?
Personal record grayling
Nice!
As usual, I love delving into your world! Just neat to see the environment and everything you go through in your love for this sport. I also enjoy your editing. a huge fan!!
Thanks, So nice to hear that :)
Awww, winter :) Beautiful scenery, quite different from April in Houston! Thank you for sharing!
Great video on fly fishing! I also love the orange snow hat you wear over your cap at the end...what a great idea! I live in Minnesota and have never seen that before! :)
Thanks. I always wear both a hat and cap... warm and the sun doesn't shine to your eye :D
Beautiful *Bait* Congratulations Fisherman!👍🎣🐠🐟🐠🐟
:D Thanks
The footage is so very lovely! I enjoyed this vid!
Nice to hear, thanks!
Such a beautiful place! Hopefully one day I can fish there 🤙
Love em, pink klinkhamer is a favorit
Sounds good! Thanks for commenting. :) .., I've tried pink and purple variation for grayling especially :D
From the very man!
Cool:) We catch all kinds of salmon family fish with klinkhammer, but specially good on chars: white-spotted char, dolly varden, brook trout.
Is the white spotted char IWANA? ...I've been fly fishing in Japan few times, and saw beautiful iwana.. I think it's related to arctic char? :D
Yes Iwana (direct translation "rock fish").
Loosely related to arctic char having dolly varden living in between those 2 species.

Love to fish for arctic char though:) How was your fishing in Japan?

The mountain scenery in Japan is so special and so Nice flyfishing. I went to Ishikawa-ken and Kochi :)
Good choices! Very scenic part of Sea of Japan side and iconic place in Pacific side:)

Unfortunately no video.. I was in Japan in 2009 :D So just pictures at that time.
You learn something every day!
Yep. Indeed.
not really one for cold weather but looks like fun time fishing
Yep, it was fun trip... and here this feels warm after the winter, now that we finally have some sun light :D
I love watching your videos! ~Elizabeth
Thanks :)
Nice litte film, guys!
Thanks Kjell, Are you into fly fishing ?
Yes ideed :-) Just completed two films (Ten Rivers Trip) on fly fishing in Norway - happy if you would like to see the films - (they have english subs but spoken in Norwegian). Here's my website: www.rakkenes.com
So cool, just checked out your youtube channel.. awesome ! Where do you usually go fishing?
Very informative, great job!
Thanks :)
That is the first day of spring??!? Looks like the middle of winter! So beautiful though!
Yep, that's how the start of a fly fishing season in early April looks like here in finland :D
So that's Mr Klinkhammer.. Never knew it was named after the inventor.
Great again👏👏👏
I enjoy all your videos. My question: Do you use the special fly or do you keep it safe in a box?
I don't dare to use it, I keep it safe in the 'special flies' category ... otherwise it would not be long to have it stuck somewhere in a tree :/ :D I don't want to lose it! :D
Great video. Yes the Klinkhamer is a great pattern.
Thanks Gary, whereabouts are you from?
I am from Western Canada. Hans and I meet a few years back when I hosted him for a fly fishing show.
Great, .. so you have some awesome waters around there. I've seen some fly fishing pics from Canada and that's pretty awesome :D
Yes there is both good flowing water and lakes around.
We are fortunate in many ways. Just like the Scandinavian countries with lots of water and few people. It is some times to easy to catch a fish here....lol.
Yep, that's the best part of living in the north... The winter is long and dark, but the summer fishing season has all the light and plenty of waters around once the ice is gone :D
Well done Anni :)
Thanks Jaana! :)
Super))) Cool))) Good luck Friends)))
What is the red material on this fly. I have great success with Klinkhammers. Great video.
It was a special tribute to the April Orange Event!!! So it actually was the Special April Orange Klinkhåmer Special 2018 as a present to the Event
Thanks Frank. What fish do you usually fish for with Klinkhammer?
Kajana Club Brook Trout, Brown Trout and Rainbows here in and around here and in the+Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York, USA.
Right, sounds great Frank :)
If this Klinkhammer not catch fish, there is no fish. I fish only with to flys, Red Tag and Klinkhammer, everyting els is just a look a like of this 2 flys (dry flys)
Yes, it's awesome :D
klinkhammer! :D
indeed
only heard the lady. Nothing seen if this Klinkhammer catches a fish. What a pity!
😆
Hola, muy buen video, klink hammer es muy bueno!!!! La deberé hacer para tenerla en mi caja de moscas.
