Driving Greece: EO82 Kalamata - Sparta - 4k scenic mountain drive Taygetos Mountain

- We are travelling today through the mountainous inland of The Peloponnese peninsula, at the foothills of the highest mountain from here, Mount Taygetos. We start at the seaside, in Kalamata, but soon start to climb, first through beautiful olive trees plantations, then through The Nedontas River Gorges, until reaching traditional mountain villages, situated halfway on the mountains, like Artemisia. Here there are some good restaurants and accomodation possibilities. From the villages the final part of the climb starts, that brings us after many hairpin turns to the highest point of the road, at over 1300m asl. From here we plunge down towards Sparta, an impressive steep downhill, with views from time to time to The Taygetos mountain. Shortly before Sparta we passing by The Unesco World Heritage Site of Mystras.

Ja, das stimmt, hier geht man schnell vom Meer in die Berge. Die Straße steigt von 0 auf über 1300m ganz schnell, dann bergrunter bis auf ca. 200m. Habe die Fahrt sehr genossen.

Hi, yes the road is very interesting, goes from sea level to over 1300m and back to 200m in about 60km. There are also many sights around.

Hi, thanks a lot! The motorways are in good condition on the peninsula, but the normal roads are lacking maintenance. Here on the road there are also some spots where consolidation work is needed. Also saw some construction sites abandoned on other roads, the budget cuts during the last 15 years are visible everywhere in Greece.

Salut, am un Opel Astra alb :) Drumul se merita, este un drum de munte spectaculos, in 60 km urci de la nivelul marii la peste 1300m, apoi cobori la 200m. Trece chiar pe sub cel mai inalt varf din Peloponez, Taygetos, la peste 2400m. Era zapada la peste 2000m.
Sparta has no more than of 17.000 inhabitants my friend.
